He sings the song in the same cynical tone it was written in at 16.. He may have hated performing it but every time he sang it was still heartfelt. I love when the main chorus starts and the camera moves in on him. He glows. This SONG sends a shiver down my spine. Rest in peace Rowland. We love you.
This song never gets old or outdated. This video was in 1999 and this song was over twenty years then and it still sounds like it was made even in that year. That's how you could tell it's a classic. Rest in peace Rowland.
Roland was so delightfully iconic. He was living in Richmond after returning from Europe, I’m walking up bridge road one day, and I look up and there’s roland - caught my eye as he was rolanding straight across the footpath, stepped onto the road, swung his right arm out with his hand up to stop the traffic, and just slouched/strode across the road not missing a beat, and went straight into the Centrelink. Seriously impressive. Probably the only time I ever saw him in daylight, and wow, that’s how to cross the cross the road, hector the cat be damned.
I'd say it's up there with the best in the world. That's coming from me in Florida. I first heard this song covered by The Divine Fits and started to delve into Rowlands material and i love it.
Kelly Renee Thomas introduced me to Howard's music. She died two years ago because our culture refused to help her. I'll always remember her painting, cross-legged with the cats laying near her as we listened to "autoluminescent" for the millionth time.
Thanks for the memories of the fresh faced and intense young man driving the guitar of the Boys Next Door in late 70's. Condolences to family and friends. - Rob H
Yeah a few years ago I saw Emma swift singing this song as the opener of her support set for Robyn Hitchcock and the audience where totally shocked by the opening lyrics but I was blown away and I've absolutely loved this song every since and the original version is just a brilliant
He never could overcome that early song, no matter how hard he tried. Thanks for posting this version. He was such a creative, talented man - miss him.
I could not agree with you more! I find it a little funny how this song gives me a slight case of the shivers every time I hear it, especially when Howard sings it. Also, he looks (physically) a lot like my old friend Gabe who was quite talented on the guitar as well.
No idea when i first heard this song but it was a long long long long time ago... And you know what? It is June 2024 as i write this and the song still sounds f%$king good...
I might be ignorant but I never knew that the Screamin Jets version was a cover until one while going down a UA-cam rabbit ole as we all do I came across this or another clip of this song and man I was blown away its crazy how good this sounds.
@GEEMELLOW: definitely one of the best song writers ever, without a doubt. His work in all his bands rings with both genius and humility. So sad that he's gone.
hi, does anyone has the entire set? Dead Radio She Cried Shivers White Wedding Exit Everything An absolute and unique performer, composer, singer, guitarist, writer...one in a million. HATS OFF to Mr. RSH!
Just found out about the passing of Rowland. Very sad news. Saw him late October in Sydney - and he was great. He did look sick in comparison to recently (saw him earlier in the yr at Nick Cave's ATP) - but did not hinder his guitar playing & songs. This is a great performance of a song which might have been his albatross - but he should have been given a Victorian Medal for his solo work, These Immortal Souls, Crime & the City Solution, Birthday Party & his records w/ Lydia Lunch & Nikki Sudden
google em..they played together in a few bands u probably never heard of. look em up, and then crime and the city solution, these immortal souls, mark lanegan even.
Such an incredible performance of an incredible song. Rowland may have come to resent how "Shivers" came to overshadow his later work, but that doesn't make "Shivers" any less of a brilliant song. I first heard it two years ago, and I think it changed my life. Listening to Rowland S. Howard's songs - hearing the way he played guitar (he played guitar like no-one else, of course) and reading his gorgeous and haunting lyrics - certainly changed my life. I wrote a poem that was a homage to Rowland - to the sort of lyrics he wrote and the songs he sang - called "Rowland's Song." I have a video of myself reciting it here: ua-cam.com/video/LnG41XLUsNU/v-deo.html.

Well said.
I see more empathy than cynicism
Rowland. A blank space where my heart should be.
St Kilda hasn't been the same since Roland S Howard left us.

I find it so emotional to watch this. I have tons of Rowland vinyl but this makes me cry again and again and again.
He left 5 years ago today, "miss you so much"...
10 years now.

this man was a genius, and not because i like his music, he just truly was
To write this song at 16 is pretty amazing. If it wasn't for Strange Behaviour I wouldn't have discovered this brilliant song. R.i.p. mate.
i could live in this song forever but i doubt if my heart can contain these amount of beautiful sadness.

This is the definitive version. Deal with it.
Were people not dealing? A little passive-aggressive, eh?
Agreed
It was the definitive version until Cat Power bettered it LOL
@@Annie-zd7mx If there is a better version than this, I would like to hear it. Would you have a link, perchance?
Rowland. Miss yer, man. The world is shite without yer.
So grateful to have heard Rowland Cockatoo Island 2009. Beautiful version
The guitar tone is amazing

Why does this choke me up? Maybe its love? Music is the only thing I've ever loved and hasn't fucked me over. Yeah, it's love.

It's worth doing a deep dive into Rowland's catalogue. Shivers is great, but he wrote so many amazing songs.
@GEEMELLOW: definitely one of the best song writers ever, without a doubt. His work in all his bands rings with both genius and humility. So sad that he's gone.
Sensational song. Sensational guitarist. Thank you Rowland.
I love the way he says the 'vain' in this version. There's so much venom, so much intensity.

I love the covers done of this song by Boys Next Door and The Witches (with Nick Cave). I can definitely see This Mortal Coil covering it as well.
