There's an old TwilightZone episode where an old woman figured out how Death would show up and take people. So she stayed inside her home and wouldn't let anyone in she didn't already know. Til one night an injured cop falls at her door & begs for help. She supisious of him, eventually let's him in, but keeps her distance. They talk for awhile & she starts to think he's not Death. Until later when someone she knows comes over but doesn't see the cop. Death says sorry for tricking her but had to find a way in. She nervous finally takes his hand & ask "When does it happen?" Not realizing until she turned around that she just died. There was no pain, no big scary moment, she didn't feel a thing. He tells her family & friends are waiting & they walk off smiling & laughing. That's how I would love to go. An old lady going in peace with Death looking like a sweet gentleman guiding me by the arm.
I liked that episode. You can't help but feel comforted by Death's words when he speaks to the old lady. "Am I really that so bad? Am I really that frightening? You talked to me. You confided in me. Have I tried to hurt you? It's not me you're afraid of. You understand me. What you're afraid of is the unknown. Don't, don't be afraid."
The Sandman episode "The Sound of her Wings" is similar! Except it desls with death that isn't painless. The personification of Death is kind and gentle, loves humanity, and just wants to make passing easy and comfortable for the deceased.
I watched it and it was so beautiful. It reminded me of 'One for the Angels'. It was always one of my favorite twilight zone episodes. Now I have another favorite.
Devon Sawa is certainly easy on the eyes. The film is based on an actual event, the explosion of TWA FLT 800, a Boeing 747-100 that subsequently crashed into the Atlantic near East Moriches, New York, on July 17, 1996, 12 minutes after takeoff from JFK, on a scheduled international flight to Rome with a stopover in Paris. There were no survivors. Parallels between the movie and the actual event include the type of aircraft involved, departure airport, both planes had students heading to Paris for a class trip, both planes exploded not long after takeoff and the cause of the explosion was the same in both cases, I believe. The news report Alex watches shows actual footage of TWA FLT 800's wreckage burning in the water. I would imagine the relatives of those killed probably weren't fans of this movie. Another thing I noticed about the film are the frequent references to water. Water is everywhere. Water is commonly a symbol of death, burial and resurrection. Death seems to be personified by water in the film. Seems like it was raining at the airport. The plane's wreckage falls into water. There's the water in the bathroom when Tod dies. There's a scene with Alka-Seltzer being dropped into a glass of water. There's the steaming kettle and the water leaking from the cracked mug. Alex almost drowns in shallow water. There's the canoe trip. There's the swimming-pool. It's raining when they're in the car. One of the characters is even named "Clear Rivers." Even the beer they're drinking could be considered water. Likewise, the Vodka, which means "water" in Russian, I believe. "Water, water, everywhere and all the boards did shrink." Also, all those electrical events in the film are analogous to water. Electricity is commonly analogized to water, e.g., electrical current etc. So, electricity = water = The Grim Reaper. It's great to find all this symbolism in a film that's primarily meant to be a good, albeit somewhat gruesome, entertainment, which it is. Of course, there's also the somewhat more obvious references to the number 180, John Denver, who died in a plane accident, etc. Oh, don't forget six months = 180 days, guys! Also, the signage at the end in Paris also has 180 on it. Another thing I saw was the use of German language and references to German filmmakers who were known for some famous, what you might call, horror movies. "Der Tod" is the German word for "death." Tod's the first survivor to die. In real life, if I were him, I wouldn't like that name and would have been very concerned from the get-go after the plane exploded. The character of male teacher Murnau, who died on the plane, is almost certainly a reference to F. W. Murnau, the German director regarded as one of the most influential filmmakers for his work in the silent era. He famously directed "Nosferatu," a film about a vampire. Agent Schreck is a reference to the German actor Max Schreck who played the vampire, Count Orlok, in "Nosferatu." Interestingly, "Schreck" in German means "scare" or "fright." Agent Weine must be named after Robert Weine. He directed "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," another German horror movie. Also, the surnames of the other characters in the film had associations with real people involved in the past production of Hollywood horror/thriller films. A sort of tip of the hat to them, I suppose. Yes, everyone gets a kick out of the line "Are there any survivors?" Ah, NO! It blew up in the air. But, you know, I wouldn't put it past someone actually asking that question, especially a reporter. Oh, after the train crash, look at Carter's pants. Yeah, and Tod foreshadows his death by making a hanging motion on the plane when Alex agrees to change seats with the girls. I think the lady teacher's death was most over-the-top because she was married to the film's producer or someone like that. An inside joke, I guess. Oh, Alex has a nice a$$, too. The mortician is clearly an agent of Death. Death is not the end!
That's really interesting! I never thought of it but it would be very spooky if that was only a coincidence. I do have to say, though, that it was revealed that Clear is named after a production assistant because they thought it was a cool name.
I remember commercials for Final Destination 3 showing the tanning bed scene scaring the absolute crap outta me! Also, fun fact: Final Destination was originally written as an X-Files episode that never happened. The FBI agents in the movie were originally going to be Scully and Mulder.
I saw this opening day in theaters and when the bus hit the girl 200 people gasped and then total silence...it was one of the most shocking things we had all seen in a cinema!
14 year old me still has nightmares about this movie. I grew up watching all of these movies from childhood to adulthood. I am 37 now and this movie is still one of my favorite horror movies along with 2, 3 and 5.
Fun Fact: There were some deleted scenes in where Alex and Clear hookup, Clear finds out she's pregnant these led to an Alternate Ending where Alex grabs the wire, but instead of being knocked off the power line, he stays on, catches on fire and dies. Clear lives and has his baby and meets with Carter and they both do the "moral of the story" thing. But the Test Audience didn't like the ending and they changed it.
The second one definitely made younger me paranoid but for regular everyday stuff like thinking I'd get a mustard on my shirt from a hotdog but only if I wore a specific light colored shirt so I'd wear a dark one lol
I love this movie. And no word of a lie, I swear this is true, the first time I watched it was because I was staying over a friend's house and we rented it to watch from the video store. Why was I staying over his his house? Because we were both going on a senior class trip in the morning....to fucking Paris! Imagine us thinking this whole movie was just a premonition for what our lives would be the next day lol
There was a time back in the late 90s and early 2000s where I had the biggest crush on Ali Larter. I still maintain that the first Final Destination movie is the best and my favorite.
I really hope the whole franchise is reacted to. Also, if you haven't seen it, I recommend House On Haunted Hill (1999) Jean Grey AND Clear Rivers star in the film
I had a boyfriend who was a pilot explain to me once that planes are more stable in the air, like, they are designed to be in the air and you're pretty safe in the air inside one- even if something goes wrong, most of the time the plane can be kept in the air long enough to resolve most problems. Its the take off and landing that's always the scary part for me, and statistically when somethings gonna go wrong LOL
for me the teacher is the most iconic death of the series (aside from the begining of 2 but I mean most memorable death that wasn't a fucking massacre but those stacked logs still make me nervous on the road to this day)

the plane emergency/explosion in this movie is the scariest ever. the movie is pretty cheesy overall (in a fun way) but that scene is legit terrifying, ugh.
Well over 85% of plane crashes occur during takeoff and landing (usually the first or last 20 minutes of the flight time) - so it's reasonable to panic if the ride is that shaky before they even get into the sky. The good news is, once you're at cruising alttitude you can basically relax because chances of death are way lower.
I've often wondered if I'd choose pate or the shreds or chunky kind of wet cat food if I was starving and had nothing else to eat. Now, I love chunky soup, so I think that's promising for the chunks. I don't love chicken noodle soup, but I like pulled meat, so maybe shreds would be good. And when I tell you the first time I ever had duck liver pate was at a wedding when I was 19 or 20, and I ate like 3 FULL appetizer trays of it BY MYSELF, so maybe I could convince myself the pate cat food is just cheap rougher cut duck liver pate. Or I could blend it up to MAKE it smoother and silkier and, therefore, more passable. Oh the random ass thoughts we have when we feed our cats...😂😂😂
I love these movies, but also it has a side effect. Every time I watch them I get uberly paranoid. I look at everything like it could kill me... good times ... good times.... xD
Am I the only person who’s noticed Devon Sawa’s nose is totally different now? Like it’s been squashed. The end of June is the beginning of fall? 😂😂😂 lucky you! The end of October is the beginning of fall here (SC). It is not improbable that it’ll be 85 degrees on Halloween…same for Christmas.
THIS MOVIE ALONE IS WHY I DON'T OWN A KNIFE BLOCK. All my knives go in the drawer, lol. Although I DO want a magnetic knife strip... I feel like THAT would be safe. But TBH, Scream 6 kinda made me want to buy one just in case I ever need to beat the shit out of someone with it😂😂😂. You never know. But SERIOUSLY, ALWAYS tuck your hand towel into your pants/pocket/apron, hang it over the handle on your oven, or put it through one of your refrigerator door handles. ALL ARE BETTER OPTIONS THAN PUTTING IT OVER YOUR KNIFE BLOCK. As an EMT, you learn, "Always keep your eyes on sharp objects. The only thing that should EVER be covering them is a lid/cap or something you can see through." Otherwise, assume your workstation IS a giant sharp. You know, kind of like "the floor is lava."
This is a classic. And I didn't know that there was another FD coming out! I guess they want to make a new generation as paranoid as those of us who grew up with these films. Seriously I was driving a few cars behind a log truck a month ago and I don't care how secure those logs were, my heart was in my throat the whole time until I left the highway.

Davon Sawa is hot
And this is the reason why I don't travel by plane
This was originally written as an episode of x files. I like to think the agents were meant to be mulder and scully
You're probably right. Makes sense.
"Cause we believe twinks" lmao
Clear is my favorite love Ali Larter she stars in the resident evil movies some of them .
fuck yeah! I'm IN for this journey, final destination franchise is such a iconic one, can't wait for the rest of it
Yasssss!!! My favorite franchise!
Lol we live in Texas so the weather is very much the same here 😂 but mentally once pride is over it’s autumn in this household!!!
Never liked Devon Sawa. He was more my sisters crush. I was always lusting for Kerr Smith tho lmao
Was that girl (Ali Larter) an orphan? You never see her parents. 😥
Great franchise, especially first to films. Can't wait to see the 6th one
Final destination is why I will refuse to get on a plane
Death is petty in these movies.
Final destination 3 is the best ❤❤
This is a classic. And I didn't know that there was another FD coming out! I guess they want to make a new generation as paranoid as those of us who grew up with these films. Seriously I was driving a few cars behind a log truck a month ago and I don't care how secure those logs were, my heart was in my throat the whole time until I left the highway.
I was born when this movie came out I was 4 months old
this franchise made me have fear of surviving a acident 😭
