I do agree that "Mending" is completely broken and brings a far too casual aspect to the game, I'm a person who loves the survival genre for the grind and the efforts it takes to finally obtain what you want. But I also hold respect for that other players might want something completely different. Rather to get the most amount of fun for the least amount of efforts...
Imo. a gameplay experience should NEVER be designed such that it becomes a comprimise between those two player bases!
The reason for that, is that you end up with a game which everyone is just half-satisfied with, rather than giving anyone an awsome game.
An easy solution to this is to introduce game modes. Allow players to set a world type to "Casual" or "Grind" mode. Where all of these changes which makes the game more difficult and scares away casual players can be introduced. That way, people gets to use the version they want.
When it comes to the "Mending" enchant specifically, I think I would much prefer a different apporach to such a powerful item.
Imagine you are 8 people playing on a server and only 6 people gets a book. That is then a rather unfair situation.
I think it would be more interesting to see some kind of rework to the enchanting table for this particular enchant.
Perhaps every account gets 1 enchant they can choose to put on one of their tools they hold the most dare. Using "Crying Obsidian" or "Gilded Blackstone" (or some other semi-rare material) insteath of "Lapis Lazuli". After you enchant it, it becomes indestructable (does not break at 0 durability, just stops having any effect) and can only be used by it's rightful owner. Now you all of a sudden introduce a reason for players to work together on a serve, to have one person which can deal with each type of situation. Because they chose the best tool or item for it. (This enchant may not need to be limited to tools, all though most players would probably opt to use it on one)
And for convenience, this tool CAN be unenchanted to re-roll for other enchantments, but will always keep the "Mending". Such that it remains a permanent choice what tool it's used on.
(An alternate path here is to allow to destroy the tool and be able to enchant another tool with it. But I think that approach is less interesting for the reason I mentioned earlier about server teamwork) At this rate, it might be more resonable to rename the enchantment to "Soulbound" or "Soulmend" though.
Sorry for the book of text. But game design is interesting! x)

Yes you bring great points! This definitely does not work AT ALL for multiplayer lol. I think modes though just make it too complicated. Perhaps there is a way to spawn more mending dungeons through some method involving bringing together and crafting items or something. I also love the idea on limited enchants per item. Like everyone can have a base of sharpness but only one extra “special” enchantment. So sharpness and fire aspect, and sharpness and knock back, but not both. And yes keeping mending or soulmend with the re roll or re-enchant works since the bosses cannot respawn. Not sure about tools only being able to be used by the creator though, but that’s my preference.

Or perhaps on multiplayer servers 8 spawn per new account joining? Or the boss drops however many mending books per person that did damage to it

@@lyarnd fairly certain people would just exploit that or go steal someone elses books. books can be traded which is part of the problem there.
the account bound enchant was intended as a workaround such that each person gets the right to the same amount and and noone else can steal it or your item with the enchant. Because they cant use it and it will clog up their inventory. it does not nessesarily matter as much how its obtained, just that a player cannot increase the amount they get in any possible way for an advantage.

I also thought of more gamemodes. When I was younger I used to pretty much only play creative but a few years ago i switched to survival. I am still annoyed at how long everything takes. i'm a builder. I want to build. But I've already spent at least 6 hours just trying to get the resources i want to use for a somewhat bigger house. That just ceases to appeal to me tbh. I still want to work for the materials but it just feels tedious. I wish there was a tough grind mode and a more laidback survival mode. Most of my time would be spent in laidback survival but occasionally i'd love to challenge myself like I have with some modded worlds. It would be great to have those options!

@@LibraryofAcousticMagic3240or at least add end game items to Minecraft that make it much easier to build and collect items like SOMETHING THAT EXTENDS YOUR BLOCK PLACING AHEM CRAB AHEM or something.

TBH making the enchantment books a late stage trade makes way more sense, since the main issue is that people can just keep rerolling lecterns until they get it- which sucks even for players who like mending. That alone would help prevent players from getting it 5 minutes into the game- you have to work for it, hell maybe even make it a trade unlocked after fighting off a raid. And also increasing the default durability of all tool types a bit will make the grind of tool replacement less frequent, thus less reliance on mending.

cave biome villagers? some sort of alternate neanderthal-esk villager that used to live in the ancient city?

I think you just forgot that people play this game on multiplayer. If there were only 6 mending books in the game then youd have whichever player no-lifes hardest on the server with mending gear and noone else would.
Like at that point, you might as well just remove the mending enchantment.

Still has the problem of someone going on their own though, so probably it’ll just have a key or something to unlock the mending room you get from the villager that each person can get 8 of.
