  • RLPO play Jean Sibelius masterpiece Finlandia
    JEAN SIBELIUS Finlandia
    Vasily Petrenko conductor
    One of the great late-Romantic composers, who single handedly placed Finland on the musical map. And theres nothing more Finnish than Sibeliuss Finlandia.
    Watch the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra tackle this Finnish masterpiece, performed at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in November 2009. Sibelius originally wrote this for a scenic piece called Finland Awakes, which was presented at the Swedish Theatre in Helsinki in protest against the drastic suppression of political freedom by Finlands Russian masters in the February Manifesto of 1899. The atmosphere of oppression would have been palpable enough for those who heard the piece, if not, the allusion to Emil Genetzs well-known song Herää Suomi! (Arise, Finland!) and the increasingly triumphant mood of the work can have left no doubt in the Finnish mind as to what the message was meant to be.
    If youve seen The Hunt for Red October or Die Hard 2 youll know to get the big guns primed when Finlandia pops up; this thing could go nuclear

    With the Russian onslaught on Ukraine and the possibility of Finland joining NATO, I was reminded of Finland's unofficial anthem composed by Sibelius when it was under Russian occupation. Many of you may know Finlandia. It starts with a theme indicating oppression and repression followed by a call to arms, then a benediction for those who died in the resistance, followed by the theme of victory. It is for me one of the most stirring call to arms. An ode to freedom.

    Jean Sibelius has always been one of my FAVORITE composers, I played the tuba part of this piece in a HUGE band make up of many different high schools. I was one of six tubas/Sousaphones. I was the ONLY E flat sousaphone, all the rest were Double B flat. It is a memory I'll NEVER forget.

    Beautifully and Triumphantly done. I was in the Kalamazoo Junior symphony orchestra when in high school and we played this piece. This was, easily, for me, one of the best pieces we ever played. Later, in my college years, after I had made a decision to follow the Lord, this piece took on new meaning. The Christian hymn "Be still, my soul", written in German ("Stille meine Wille, dein Jesus hilft siegen") in 1752 by Katharina Amalia Dorothea von Schlegel (1697-1768) and translated into English in 1855 by Jane Laurie Borthwick (1813-1897), is usually sung to the peaceful melody of this piece which is played, initially, by the woodwinds, starting in 5:33. One stanza of this hymn reads as follows:
    Be still, my soul, the Lord is on thy side;
    Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
    Leave to thy God to order and provide;
    In every change He, faithful, will remain.
    Be still, my soul, thy best, thy heavenly friend
    Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
    I am comforted, not only by the melody now, but also by the words shown above. The brass, with the rumbling of the timpani in the beginning of this piece, evokes, for me, the crashing of waves, a powerful storm (times of great adversity). The midsection, by the woodwinds and then the strings, evokes periods of comfort and encouragement. And lastly, the ending, which is glorious and triumphant, evokes an incredible joy, where redemption will reach its consummation in the renewal of the physical order, and the effects of sin’s curse will be absent. God Himself will wipe away all our tears. There will be no more death and no reason to mourn, for all that causes sadness will have passed away. And finally, and most wonderful of all, we will dwell in the brightest light imaginable - the light of God’s glory - in this renewed creation.

    This piece is in the movie Tuntematon sotilas (The unknown soldier, black/white version) which tells about machine gun company in the Continuation war. It just multiplies the feeling and in the same time brings even more out of this piece. The doom of Finland, the sacrifice to avoid the shackles of tyranny and then the hope for better tomorrow when free men stand up for what is right and just.

My dad never told what it was, as everyone of these young lads. Finlandia is a truly amazing piece. I love this and the Karelia suite from Sibelius.
    I gre up hearing this and I can't help but hum along as it is played. What a hell of a national anthem to have. Well done Finland!

    He estado solo dos días en Finlandia y mi mas preciado recuerdo es una foto en que estoy al lado del monumento al maestro Sibelius, con cuya música me familiaricé hace 65 años

    This is the Liverpool Philharmonic? Wow! It is 'Royal'. I thought it was only about the Beatles and Football. Vasily Petrenko conductor? He is amazing! A Star! Only the chorus is missing.
