Only problem with Dave Friedman is he makes me want to build another amp myself (which I need like a hole in the head). Tone Talk is a goldmine of information. Appreciate the look round his workshop!
Buxom Betty (the actual amp) is up there for the best amp for Big Band situation. Sits beautifully between horns and keys and sounds good and otn occupy too much sonic space at the same time.
I love Dave’s perspective on anything. The difference in years and series on speakers is good to know. I love his multiple speaker 4x12 options and use the IR of that cab on the Kemper for Friedman profiles. Even local bands that tour a lot invest in his fine amps. Thanks for doing this!
Thanks for saying thanks, Warren! You honor me. This video was a long time coming. The Dirty Shirly is the best amp ever, IMHO. With all it can do for rock n roll it can do something extra with a little trick!
@@L.Scott_Music - Yeah, I had read that before. Not tried it yet. I also read that some people ran a BB in the loop and said it tightened up any boominess in the low end. I bought my first Marshall JMP 2204 when I was 16 back in 1980. Still have it and it still has the stock tubes in it, no mods or repairs, stock capacitors in great condition. I also have a 79 4 holer which used to be from Adrian Vandenberg ( Whitesnake) and a JMP combo. Great amps
Yep, i had a belt off an HH tape loop echo. I had a ICL100 2x12 combo .. the transistor sound i liked , i then got a Mesa Boogie stereo preamp and ran it through a NAD 90/20 hifi amp .
I have a Metropoulos 68' Plexi replica that Friedman modified for me. He made it into a non master volume style amp. The amp came with a " Variac" which drops down the volts to 90 volts and automatically re bias the amp to operate at 90v. Great sounding amp when cranked to 10!
Definitely a sweet shop shop for guitarists. Dave sounds an awesome laid back guy who knows a thing or 2 about amps and sounds from them. Great video thanks very much
His advice is totally solid. Jim designed the Lead 12 head to be an 800 that had more manageable volume and tubes. Sold one for nothing and then picked it up again for next to nothing. High input, dime the volume and adjust your gain to taste. Takes pedals surprisingly well. Since this is essentially an 800, Dave's advice to crank it is completely valid. There is a point where all of a sudden it just opens up. Btw, it's crazy loud for the size it is. Yeah, you want a poor man's 800? Grab a marshall lead 12 head. You're welcome.
I was in total awe all along this video mate , two of my fav tech-gurus talking freely together and no one around rolling their eyes. Loved it. By the way of 70's durability Vs security , end of last year I had a new customer calling my mobile and exploited with a surreal trembling voice : " So you're Dave huh? I have your business ticket and .. well... I've got F****ING ELECTROCUTED!!!" Ends up his beloved vintage amplifier (not mentioning brand , hope you'll understand) had one of those sixties fashioned capacitor used as net-hum filter , its insulation saluted the world for a more ethereal existence and in consequence the glorious long lived cap decided to discharge volta arcs in its neighborhood. Tesla himself would have been hitten. Recap your amps sometimes folks!
I have a Dirty Shirley 40w combo. All my opinion of course but you will have to prise it from my cold dead hands. From the first time I plugged into it in the shop I was in love. It has the feel and the tone I was looking for for ages. If someone gave me a Twin Sister I might consider swapping but I don’t need two channels at the moment. One of the things that surprised me about the DS40 is that I love it clean. Don’t get me wrong, it is amazing dialled up but I wasn’t expecting to love the cleans as much as I do. Thanks Dave for making such a wonderful amp.
Dave's Be-50 deluxe and JJ100 are a killer guitar amps! I wish that He could do a for both a 2x12 combo. Just beautiful old school power with some modern kick!
Great video! Dave is such a nice guy and always a pleasure to talk with about gear, etc. Also, apologies for interrupting your shoot on the day when I stopped by to pick up my amp. Now I know what you guys were up to. Cheers!
The reason you get an anemic tone when the master is set high, is that because the overall volume of the amp is a then so loud that you can't use enough level on the input channel. The " bright cap" on the treble chsnnel is like a high pass filter intended to preserve the high end if the channel volume is set low, so you need to have the chsnnel level high enough so the bright cap would make no difference. This would be too loud, hence the " power soak" idea. I have to say that the ( trade mark ) " Power Soak" is not a good sounding attenuator, but a better type could be the answer to using an amp that was designed to be used on live stages and not requiring to be mic'd up. The best amp for this is the GrooveTubes STPG . This is a thirty watt amp with two 6V6's ( usually more like twenty something watts) but has a built in reactive load from an induction circuit which you can use the output of without needing to have a cab attached. I've used it several times in the control room just plugged into the board's line-level input, with incredibly realistic sound. Judicious use of attenuation ( or rearfacing the speaker, or isolating it somewhere) can allow you to use more of a power section.
Lol I used to have a 1982 JCM800 2204 and thought it lacked lows. People told me I was crazy. Thanks for the Runt 50. It gets what I want from the 800 series and any other Marshall I've ever wanted.

RE: your question "why is it i love the JCM 900 and everyone else hates them?" Well, having gigged 3 of each my take on it and what i too like the 900 is that the 900 cuts thru a band mix in a certain way where the 800 can get lost in the mix. I think a lot of people like the 800 because they play at home and the 800 sounds better then the 900 solo. But in a band mix the 900 IMO cuts better/right. Si i assume you gigged both like me and that brought you to the same conclusion as me. Playing out of a band mix at home or whatever, i would choose the 800. But the 800 mushed out in a band mix where the 900 punched thru with tight bass and good balance and clarity. I believe solid state is NOT the devil some say and by combining it with tubes you can much more easily dial in the tone when designing an amp.
I believe Friedman meant "CS-800" when referring to the legendary and reliable Peavey power amp. I actually owned a limited edition gold-plated collector's edition at one point.

Hey! I still have my 1983 Carlsbro Stingray Lead Combo. I purchased it brand new and it is still going today. It is a shame that the company has gone downhill and no longer produce my amp.
@@Producelikeapro I bought it from Session Music in Tooting, Southwest London. It still has their sticker on the back. Like many music shops in outer London, they no longer exist. My Carlsbro has lived longer. I have contacted Carlsbro and asked if they would revive this beast of a guitar amp. 2 channel 150 watt Parametric EQ and reverb guitar combo. It is very sturdy and heavy. I love it.
So typical they pass right over the smallbox 50.. my favorite Friedman amp I’ve never heard Dave make a remark about this amp I’m guessing it’s the one most like his revered plexi 50 watt
I bought a 1983 Marshall 2203 800 back in 2012 for $450. I was 18 and stoked as shit lol. Still have it but it needs a lot of correction. I've learned a ton since then but it's definitely not roached. I can't believe it survived me gigging with it but it did. Prior owner did some shotty work but it is what it is and the board and 80% of the amp is still untouched. Transformers are still good. It's no plexi but not bad for what I have in it. I know a great local tech that can fix er up. Cool video
Warren please review the plugin Reso. It is the next level up to Soothe2. I know I’m not anybody significant for you to take plug-in advice from but as soothe is so important in todays production I definitely think it’s worth you attention
Jerry C's rig is great and has a great tone. I'd love to have the money to buy and try a Friedman amp. I wonder if he has any plans for building and manufacturing any bass amps, I'd like to nominate myself to demo and give feedback on 1 of those!!!! Thanks for the interview... I love hearing the history of amp guitar and bass companies
Dude Jerry's sound is my favorite. He has such a wide sonic range, but his core sound is so heavy and crushing, but without sounding like any other "heavy" high gain amp brand. Yes Dave does make his signature JJ amp, but that's only a small piece of the puzzle lol. I have his signature Epi LP Custom wino and it is hands down the best playing and looking guitar Epi has ever made IMO. The neck profile is slim and fast, but not so skinny and flat that it kills your hand from cramps because you have nothing to hold onto like other slim necks. I also rotate 2 different sets of pups in it, an SD JB bridge and 59' neck and Gibson 498t/490r set and I get everything I could want outta those 2 sets. If I'm going for Jerry's sound I use Bogner pedals and I can get very close, I want to find an old Bogner Fish preamp that he used a lot during his Degradation Trip album which to me is ultimate Cantrell tone. I have played the Friedman JJ and it is absolutely great, but it is sooooo damn expensive just like all his stuff is. I just wish Dave had options that weren't all completely hand wired, basically custom made boutique amps. I could get a truly custom built tube amp to my exact specs for less than what Dave charges, in fact I have lol. Nonetheless he does make great sounding stuff, but most working musicians including myself can't afford it, and after all isn't that what music gear is supposed to be made for? Keep rockin man 🤘🤘🤘
I'm on a bit of a budget but I've currently got a 50 watt vox Cambridge ( love it).... A 20 watt vox valvetronix...... Line 6 spider 30 watt.... a line 6 catalyst 60 watt ...... And a marshall mghdfx 100 watt Half stack with the celestions........... I love the marshall and the 50 watt Cambridge as far as what I own lol ... 🎉🎉🎉🤟🤟🤟🤟🎸🎸🎸
I love listening to guys like you that are sound wizards with everything... I just recently started playing guitar and I'm a metal hard rock guy but at 58 I enjoy so many types of music anything from 1950's adoowop abeebop to Motown to classic rock to full blown DEATH METAL ( the stuff from 1983-2000)....) So I'm probably going to grab the Jerry Cantrell 20 watt head one of these days I've got quite a few solid states at the moment but my first tube head is going to definitely be a Friedman .... Friedman is the man as far as a good old school tone master..... 🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
Jerry is my sonic role model. That dude has such an immense range, and his higher gain sound is absolutely crushing and heavy. Listen to Psychotic Break from his 2nd solo record Degradation Trip and you'll know what I'm talking about immediately. I have his Epi Wino Custom and it is amazing as far as QC, look and feel. The neck profile is based off his personal wine red custom with some slight modification, and it's one of the best feel and playability neck profiles I've ever played on a Les Paul. I want his sig JJ amp from Friedman but my God does Dave price his amps at the absolute top of the heap lol. That's alright because I can get super close for A LOT less using Bogner preamps or pedals and you can get those used for a steal. Rock on man, you have great taste in amps and players!
@@Naughtforeye yes absolutely love that material from Jerry ... I love his guitar tone on so many tracks he's done!!!! I mean with tons of options for smaller 15-20 watt tube heads for under 6oo dollars it's a hard choice lol...I mean the peavey 6505 mini... The 5150 mini..... Joyo mjolnier..... Randall el diablos.... But I'd go for the Friedman even tho it's a bit more price wise... I just love a good tone man lol....I got bit by the Asian tone bug recently lol and it's infection is completely incurable so looks like I'm screwed hahaha😝😝😝😝🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟😜😜😜😜😜
I have a '76 Marshall 2203 and run it always through a UA OX, so I can dial in whatever tone I want without blowing my windows out. I have a KHE 4x4 amp switcher too and can highly recommend it. Fantastic piece of gear I could never live without.

My Carlsbro has lived longer. I have contacted Carlsbro and asked if they would revive this beast of a guitar amp. 2 channel 150 watt Parametric EQ and reverb guitar combo. It is very sturdy and heavy. I love it.
So typical they pass right over the smallbox 50.. my favorite Friedman amp
I’ve never heard Dave make a remark about this amp
I’m guessing it’s the one most like his revered plexi 50 watt
I have it and love it. Don’t know why he wouldn’t demo one of Dave’s amps on this video. Instead he demoing a Marshall.
Super fun episode!
Bro out here can really play!!
Aw shucks! Thanks ever so much
The silver jubilee is also my favourite amp ever. I have 3 Marshall’s. SJ, AFD100, JVM410h
A masterpiece!!
Dave is the amp genius i have to have a Friedman
Keep rockin man 🤘🤘🤘
Awesome stuff!!!
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm on a bit of a budget but I've currently got a 50 watt vox Cambridge ( love it).... 🎉🎉🎉🤟🤟🤟🤟🎸🎸🎸
I will definitely be buying a Friedman amp in the future.
Great idea
Awesome to see. Love my BE100.
I had two JMP's with SD1 and boss graphic and an ibanez flanger in 86, then the DS1 ala Gary Moore like you said!
Danny Johnson loved his Silver Jubilee Marshall.
Very cool. Thank you
Thanks ever so much
I'm still waiting for them to do a Warren DeMartini Signature model!! I know Warren was hanging out at the HQ a lot last year. Make it happen!
I have a '76 Marshall 2203 and run it always through a UA OX, so I can dial in whatever tone I want without blowing my windows out.
I have a KHE 4x4 amp switcher too and can highly recommend it. Fantastic piece of gear I could never live without.
my first bass head was a Carlsbro. Bought it used in probably 1988
I remember Carlsbro very well
