My dad bought a Friedman 20w amp a year ago and when it arrived it had a grounding issue. We went ahead and made a video showcasing the problem and Dave himself actually replied to the email and troubleshooted for us and eventually he arranged to send a new one out for my dad. My dad now uses his amps almost exclusively now. We were really impressed that the customer service actually came from the owner himself. Dave is a good dude.
@@douglasdog1 we had contacted them before. And he asked what the specific problem seemed to be, so we decided to make a video showcasing the problem with both a strat and les paul to show that it had a definite grounding issue
Had a similar situation a DS Mini I bought through Sweetwater was not working so I sent email to Friedman. Dave answered personally from his iPad and over the course of a few days and emails isolated the problem and had new tubes in the mail post haste. Outstanding customer service.
.it wouldn't have looked good for his amplifier companys reputation if you had got fried and died, that's why he responded by sending you a replacement fast yes cool dude
That outro song you played stopped me dead in my tracks while the rest of the video I was playing in the background while I surfed the web. I had to watch it twice; just fantastic!
I emailed the generic "service" link on the Friedman site about a year ago to ask a question about the channel switch on my Smallbox Combo (best Marshall school combo in the world, although depending on the day, the Dirty Shirley is just the ticket, it was a tough choice to make) because I wanted to use another brand of pedal looping/switching station with it and it was on a Sunday. Dave himself sent me a reply and I got it in the time it took to go for lunch. That really impressed me. But what really nailed it home, was about 6 months ago when I emailed the same generic address with a super detailed 1/2 page question about running a stereo pedal in the loop while running the stereo side into the front of a wet dry rig and blah blah blah, and again Dave replied (this was a real out there question) with questions of his own about certain specifics, what I was trying to do, etc. There was nothing in it for him, but he went out of the way to answer me, and do some back and forth. You could say, I had a casual consult about complicated rig system by one of the masters. He should've sent me a bill. This man is top of the heap , and his amps are worth the price. Probably a business genius as well. If Marshall were smart, they would have tried to woo him with riches to rejuvinate their amp line.
TBH That is one of the most melodic riffs I hv ever heard, the shred past is at the right moment and the bending still in my mind looping again and again......
I own a PT-20 and a 4x12 and they are awesome. Bought a Friedman guitar without having the chance to play it and i must say, It is my favorite guitar. Build quality, The tone and just how stable and intune it is, One of the bet ever made.
Love the Friedman stuff... I have a smallbox combo that is amazing and the golden pearl pedal as well. I used to work with Dave in '89 or '90 at Brauer Rentals when he was doing racks... Dave was always cool to me and was genuinely excited about his work... fun memories. Thanks Dave for makin it happen and producing great products! Edit... Sammy's playing at the end of this vid is rippin! Daaaaaamn! Edit2... Ya know... if one believed in reincarnation... I see a lot of Randy's personality here... just sayin.
I had that sound. I started out on it. 1972 super bass, 8x10 cab and a Paul Rivera power soak. And my brothers 1974 Les Paul Custom, cream coloured. Man, I miss that rig.
Dave is a great guy and awesome at what he does, he built me a custom amp earlier in the year and we must of exchanged over 50 emails to get it right. Thanks Dave!
Love my Friedman BE OD pedal...it was the sound that was in my head that I could no find in any O.D. pedal I tried...till I found his...thanks so much!!!
Thank you for the video. Dave really makes some amazing products. Respect to Andersons for consistently supporting up and coming businesses. That is some next level gear. What an amazing time in the music industry!
Friedmans are and have always been the best sounding amps in the world to me. Every time a guitar tone on a record blows my mind, Dave's hands were on it 9/10 times. This interview could've gone on for hours. Thoroughly enjoyed this one.
I like how Dave designs his pedals using his experience with tons of amps. It seems like most pedals are designed only considering a generic amp but Dave knows that a player could be using any sort of amp, each with it's own issues, and he accounts for that as much as possible. It makes a Friedman pedal a smart buy since it is more likely to go and do what you need.
Excellent interview (and product placement of course :O) The man's a genius and encyclopedia of amp design. Merry Christmas to all at Andertons and their extended family!
Dave is an idol and I love all my gear that his name is on. I would also spend crazy money on a Friedman fridge. It would probably be modified to make the best beer in the world and just replenish when low. Lol. Your the man Dave and thanks for the love of this epic gear!!!
What an amazing story!... And seems like a humble man as well, I'd love to own a BE or a butterslax one day, just can't decide if it's gonna come before or after a deizel vh4 amp!....that head and the butterslax run simultaneously ,......wow!
I own a Wildwood Edition Pink Taco and it is without a doubt the best amp I have ever heard. I cant find anything I don’t like about it even if I have to find something!!! It is THE sound in my head.
Dave Friedman knows his stuff from learning how valve electronics works and filters and understanding trial and error. It's not rocket science but close. As an amp modder and becoming better at it meeting Dave like this at Andertons is, not like meeting a guru, but seeing this guy that has the same sort of view of guitar sounds as I have. And I can mod amps to get them!
I'm looking at all the mini heads to see which would be best suited for me. To me, the PT and Runt seem plexi/JCM based. How would you describe the base tone of the DS and what it's Marshall "equivalent" would be?
@@jackcarter5364 Yeah, the Dirty Shirley is more like the JTM 45 (Blues Breaker). The low end is a bit looser and the mids are a bit thicker. It's not as "modern" sounding as the PT but it's still got a ton of gain and can be tweaked enough to still sound pretty metal. I just like the way the Shirley mini is voiced compared to the PT. I also like running it cleaner or slightly crunchy relative to how hot it can get. When I kick on the BE-OD, it boosts the gain, scoops the mids a bit and tightens the low end, essentially turning it into a PT!
Great interview! I've followed Dave's rise to the top since the early Rig-Talk forum days and remember him unveiling the Marsha at a James Lugo ampfest. I actually had the first 3-channel Dual Rectifier that he modified. I bought it new and after a few years, wanted something a little more fluid and less fizzy and he delivered. Regretfully, I traded it away for something with a better loop and more fitted to my gigging band at the time but I wish I would've kept it. I would probably buy it back if I could find it :)
I love watching history videos with the people who make the gear we use, very entertaining for us nerds. Thanks Cap'n! I wish I had more of Dave's wares (come on Santa you cheap b*****d)... I only have one Friedman product atm, but I really do like my SIR-COMPRE, it's pretty much always on no matter what I'm playing. Thanks Dave! Merry Christmas Everyone!
Please make a Friedman version of a Leslie. I don't mean a pedal, I mean an actual amp. Rotating bass speaker and reversely rotating horns. You'd do an AMAZING job.
This Guy is living proof that field experience is so much more interesting than book theory. The road to success is not always the same road. Friedman makes awesome amps.
The new BE-OD sounds awesome but it should really come with some sort of TRS plug for remote switching between the channels. Lots of people are using switchers today and that would really make that pedal stand out.
I think these guys nailed it as far a the Marshall sound. A lot of the classics Marshall, Soldano, Boogie, etc sound thin and brittle with no body at reasonable demo in a guitar shop volume. But turn them up and oh boy! That’s where the magic happens. Just sucks cause most of us cannot play that loud regularly even in average gigs
I have a Zakk Wylde jcm800 2203 signature 100w head and matching cab. It sounds fantastic but it must be cranked and I run a zw44 mxr od pedal to push the front end. Nothing I tried sounds as good when cranked!!!!! I would love to try a Friedman though!!!!
cool. Friedman makes nice stuff. like the british my goal amp is still a recto verb. but i think a be 100 pedal might be nice. also i'm definitely getting a pedal board. awesome design.
I wish manufacturers did the Marsha thing where you start with a base amp and then you can add on features (fx loop, multiple channels, etc). That would be a pain from a manufacturing perspective but one could argue that this “dell model” is the better way to make products as you’d be only building products that you already sold
Nobody asked Dave about where his inspirations for names come from and why:) I guess captain was cautious about not harming the business dealings... I am lucky enough to own a Friedman amp, I absolutely love it.
