So in musical theatre this is called the “all skate”. The most famous one is “one day more” from les mis, but Sondheim, and others have used this…But Lin’s rhythms tend to be more intricate. Check out one day more from Les Miserables
What is striking to my ear is how every layered melody is crystal clear & the listener can pick out each voice & song without it becoming a jumbled mess. Life is messy & complicated but everyone should be heard. Lin also gives each character meaning & depth with a recognizable melody!
This gets credited to Lin-Manuel as his 'style', but even he will tell you it's not unique to him. So many musicals before him take this approach, from West Side Story, other Stephen Sondheim shows, to Jon Larson's act one closer in Rent. Lin's distinctive style incorporates Latino rhythms, Hip hop, current pop and traditional musical theater into the blends that result in projects like these.
But he does love doing it and he always does it the most elegantly. So even though he didn’t make it up, which he also said he took a lot of inspiration from les mis to writ Hamilton, he does do it frequently and is kind of known for it.
in hamilton philippa so is actually singing 'that would be enough', renee is singing satisfied and then crhistopher is singing history has its eyes on you
As others have pointed out, this is not unique to LMM but he definitely knows how to do it well. He does have a distinct sound and style that definitely comes through in Encanto. I know it's not popular, but if you want to have some fun identifying the sound of his style, you should listen to Bring It On the musical cast recording. He was a co-composer and I hear a lot of it as undertones in Encanto. Listening through the recording you can hear what he wrote and what the others wrote. It might not be video worthy (I personally love it but it's an unpopular opinion) but it's great as a study of his sound and it's development over the years. Bring It On was between In The Heights and Hamilton.
This composition 'style' (it's really more of a compositional device or technique) that Lin uses and many other composers use, originated in the Baroque Period of classical music by J.S. Bach. The term for this compositional device is 'Counterpoint'.
we did the musical in the heights at my high school back in 2017 and learning the music for it was not easy. not only do you have to learn the individual part of an difficult song like 96,000 but then how each character line fits on top of each other on top of the four different lines the ensemble has.
*Another aspect of lin manuel style that I personally love is the stop and go vibe. Like he builds you up with with a beat, a voice singing or tension in a song then hell stop it, like in wait for it. He does that a lot and the contrast of speed just does something to me*
Please tell me you noticed how he does two rhymes at the same time! Like he starts one rhyhm, and before he can do the last part of the rhyme, he throw in the beginning of another rhyme, then he does the last part of the first rhyme and then the last part of the second rhyme. I don't know if that makes sense but that's the best way I can try to explain it. Example: Seven foot A1 *frame* rats along his B1 *back* when he calls your A2 *name* it all fades to B2 *black* Same with: Don't be A1 *upset* or B1 *mad* at all, don't feel A2 *regret* or B2 *sad* at all. Compared to: Carry on my wayward A1 *son* there'll be peace when you are A2 *done.* I keep thinking about it and no one I see or know seems to have noticed or explained what its called or if anyone else does it.

also fun fact, the voice actress of Mirabel and the singing voice of Abuela are both in the In The Heights film
Amazing
