All of the Founding Fathers (and there wives) definitely knew they were making history, and they were **obsessed** with their legacies. Those who were able to grow older before they died (Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Franklin, etc.) all spent years and years arranging the papers, etc., that they were leaving behind (and burning any they didn't want preserved for posterity) in hopes to have some hand in shaping and cultivating their legacies. And they left instructions with their wives and children for what to preserve and what to destroy after they died. Several of them, like Franklin and Jefferson, also wrote autobiographies. Jefferson even made sure to leave behind lists of his accomplishments
And then after their deaths, their wives and children also continued to champion the Founders' place in history and to carry on their legacies. As I commented on One Last Time, Eliza had to really fight for Hamilton to get credit for the contributions he made to Washington's Farewell Address. We learn more of her accomplishments in the final song.

Haha... “I’m learning to rewind a bit after speaking” aw man, this made me chuckle because I pictured some of the comments I’ve seen telling you what you missed when you paused. It’s all good, love the explanations about the production. So the comma thing was in his letters to Angelica (the sister who is his intellectual match). The letters in this song are the ones he wrote to his wife (Eliza) who is furious because of his affair with Mariah Reynolds. He sure kept it complicated, Alexander!!!

on the one hand I love hearing producer's reaction to music I like because they notice things from the production that I would've never noticed and I learn a lot. On the other hand I find it infuriating when they miss the masterful lyrics because they're paying attention to the panning of drums or something like that hahaha This is awesome though.

West Side Story is famously loaded with them! Hadestown is as well (which is incredible!). Caroline, or Change... Ragtime... any Sondheim score... and, yes, certainly Les Mis.
Not to take anything at all away from Hamilton, but a lot of musicals are thick with storytelling through motifs. It's cool to be able to analyze how they function in terms of narrative, character, and emotion.

You'll see at the end of the show that Eliza definitely knew she was making history.
Hamilton and the people around him left a ton of letters that were largely preserved because they were aware that they were making a legacy. But there is very little between him and Eliza, even though we know they wrote to each other often. No one knows why there isn't much left, but one theory (that Lin Manuel Miranda went with) is that she burned his letters because she was (justifiably) angry after he published the Reynolds Pamphlet. But no one knows for sure.
In fact, Eliza Hamilton said many times that she thought she was a terrible writer, especially compared to people like her husband and sister, so she might have just not wanted that to be her legacy.
One thing this song definitely gets right, though, is why she was mad. She knew he had an affair. Most powerful men did. But by telling everyone all the details he damaged her reputation, too. Keeping it private she could live with, but his attempt to save his political reputation humiliated her.

Re: you wondering if these people knew they were making history/that a play would be written about them - there's a part at the very end of the musical that you'll experience when you watch it on Disney+, and one interpretation of the very ending is that Eliza is seeing the audience and realizing that very thing, that there was a play about them (and that their story has been told). I can't wait for you to watch it!

You have GOT to check out the How Hamilton Works series by Howard Ho here on UA-cam after you finish listening. He breaks down each theme in incredible detail and it’ll make you appreciate even more the effort that was put into creating this show.

OMG if you think THIS is sad. You ain't seen nothing yet. In one of the upcoming songs in the live play, Phillipa Soo (Eliza) literally screams and its not in the soundtrack audio. Thankfully. Because its the most heart wrenching sound you'll ever hear

@Jacob Restituto You have no idea literally how vicious Eliza was with her action(s) here (in this song & in real life)... She literally went straight for Alexander's throat. Hamilton's legacy was like the one thing he was completely, utterly obsessed with beyond anything else, and Eliza outright made the decision to destroy it, by destroying anything that might let history make him out to be good person, despite his affair (hence the "Burning the letters that might have redeemed you" line). She burned ALL her letters from him, therefore leaving history with nothing that might have made him out to be a good husband despite his adultery. To this day, we have no idea what they said to one another in those letters (hence the "Let future historians wonder how Eliza reacted when you broke her heart" line... literally, historians do wonder what they said to one another, what happened between them). By burning the letters, Eliza had her fierce revenge by dealing what would-have-been a catastrophic blow to his legacy.

    • @swordofgallifrey6330

@@JacobRestituto I know!!! Eliza was a total badass and completely savage in this instance. She skipped any small, petty type of revenge and went straight for the cutthroat kind. Her burning the letters was a cold, vicious, and calculated action; she knew exactly what the consequence of doing so would be for Alexander's legacy. In a way, she was erasing Hamilton from the narrative (aka history) along with herself (as seen with "I'm erasing myself from the narrative" line) in one single, calculated action. By burning the letters, she was destroying them both in history's eyes.

You should check out the PBS special, Great Performances, Hamilton's America. It starts filming LMM about 6 months before the show first opens off Broadway. It's extremely informative from both Lin-Manuel (the writing/creating of the play) and Ron Chernow(historical facts), whose biography of Hamilton inspired Lin to write the play. It's an excellent documentary. ua-cam.com/video/SDTmITgsye8/v-deo.html

maybe an unpopular opinion, this might come as a surprise to you, BUT its not one of my favorites haha ;)
the whole scene is a breakup song basically...well done, just not a favorite moment
Leslie Odom Jr., the actor of Burr, he did a youtube special where he asked the cast which part of the show they loved more, the first half (everything up to non-stop) or the second half of the play, basically everyone preferred the first half. what do you think so far? the second half takes more time to like it recon
