What Kander said reminds me of this excellent quote by Neil Gaiman: "The world always seems brighter when you've just made something that wasn't there before." Creativity is a powerful thing!
Colbert's intelligence is such a treat. His interviews always go deeper, you know he's truly listening, knows what he's talking about and is actually interested - while never trying to overshadow his guests. As opposed to generic questions on an index card given to 99.9% of "interviewers."
Your comment just made me realize that while I have found the audacity to talk over some terrible people I have also lost the ability to wait on great but slow talkers. Time for reflection :|
No one could have handled this interview better, Stephen Colbert is able to patient in a way that few others are. And watching Lin Manuel Miranda just vibrate with the glee of working with John Kander is wonderful.
What a joy to hear John Kander speak about composing, and about the alchemy of creating art. The reason he is stlll writing is that he hasn't lost the thrill of being the one to create something.
This is my #1 favorite Colbert interview of all time. My God, Kander? WOW! He’s a page out of Broadway musical theatre history. I was hoping that their act of creation was at least partially recorded - and I got my wish. Would have been swell to view it as part of the interview. Must go look for it…
This is just lovely. I love how Lin Manuel honors and elevates the elder masters, Kander, Sondheim etc. . Brandi Carlile does this as well, Joni Mitchell, Tanya Tucker.
John Kander, along with Sheldon Harnick and Charles Strouse is/are the last of the great Broadway musical composers/lyricists in the era and close-in-age peers of the dearly departed legends like Fred Ebb, Jerry Bock, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman etc., who made classic musicals of the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's.
The first time I met John Cander was during previews of A Day in Hollywood in the ‘80s and we were backstage talking and he was frustrated because he had just spent 4 hours writing a new song, only to realize it had already been written by someone else! I always remember his humor and gentle manner. What a delight to see him still flowing with such creativity! Good for you, John!
Mr Kander is right about the thrill of creating songs - I am a painter, and it gives me a thrill to make images exist, stopped in time for anyone to see anytime.
With Mr. Kander's final remarks about creating something that was not there before, I couldn't help but think about the closing lines of finishing the hat, written by another legend of the trade: Look I made a hat, where there never was a hat.
Wonderful conversation. Hope many creators, artists, people in general get some major inspiration from these golden nuggets of how creation happens. You don't have to know the destination in the beginning, just start the journey and trust the process. And sometimes the journey can be twice the fun with a partner. What a treat to listen to these two partners in writing and creating.
You can really tell in Lin-Manuel’s face that there’s a lot of respect there for John. I have a lot of love and respect for Steven and Lin-Manuel and their craft, but it jumped up to a whole other level just in listening to John answer the questions and tell his stories❤
I love the substance that you bring to television with conversations like this. “Something is there that was not there before,” what a lovely thought about creativity.
Stephen, you are a genius. Your interviews are always thought provoking, you are interested, well prepared. I never feel you are reading your questions. Finally you are respectful of your guests. Thank you.
Excellent interview! I hope that Colbert at some future time will gather together the many fantastic interviews he's done with stellar artists in all fields and make it into a film. These interviews, recollections, memories are pure magic. 👍❤️
I've always said to myself that I would work to be a carer for the elderly just exactly for this reason -- to listen and fill myself with their experience and wisdom. Thanks, Stephen, for giving him time. ❤
I'm not sure if it's in this video, but at some point the esteemed John Kander said that, unlike in London or Paris (where there are English, or French, and "others" from all over) everyone in NYC is an "other." Not so. City-Data notes well over ten thousand Native Americans in NYC (probably more). Just because they're scant in number doesn't mean they're not there. I feel a kind man like Kander would want to know of his error.
I think what he meant was, in London or Paris there is a feeling of being amidst the locals even when you live there, but in NYC, everyone is from NYC. This might not be 100% accurate (I'm sure there are some who primarily identify as Americans) but it's his feeling that being part of NYC is such a unifying feature: you can have your own cultural identity, national identity, but still say with pride that you're from New York City.
Look I made a hat, where there never was a hat. I wish I had that kind of creativity. My brain can't conceive something from nothing. The best I can do is basically follow or copy. I can try to "make it my own" but inventing something brand new? No.
LMM is 43 years old. What's meant by "three generations apart" by Mr Kander is NOT he is three times older than Lin Manuel Miranda!! 🙄 He simply meant that LMM is young enough to be in Mr Kander's grand children's generation! If two persons are separated by TWO generations, then the older of the two belongs to the generation of the younger person's parents. Similarly, when two persons are separated by three generations, it means the older person is of the same generation as that of the younger person's GRAND PARENTS. That's what JK meant there!
Thank you for letting the older gentleman find his words! That is the great art of timing and listening!!
Excellent point...and something that is often not done.
Steven knows that will be him some day and hope he will be given the same respect
Exactly!! An amazing gentleman working at 96
at 96 that guy is sharper than most people at any age
@@private15 He is a miracle!

Reminds me of Scarlett Johansson back in 2012 saying that all questions for her were about managing to fit into her tight costume.
So true
Love the respect SC and LMM have for JK - giving him time to speak. LMM is a fast talker and didn’t overpower the older man. great interview.
Your comment just made me realize that while I have found the audacity to talk over some terrible people I have also lost the ability to wait on great but slow talkers. Time for reflection :|
I would happily sit and listen to John Kander for hours. Thank you for giving him this venue.
Sign me up!

Cross-generational genius and respect - love this ❤
My son & I independently sing songs from each one of these legendary men at any given time. THAT is TIMELESS. That takes magic. These guys got it.
THAT’S how you interview true legends and talent! Well done Stephen!!
What a delightful pair. I loved listening to John talk about how he met Lin, and about writing music.❤
This was beautiful! The older generation still has something to offer. Never forget that. You can always learn from those who came before us.
What a joy to hear John Kander speak about composing, and about the alchemy of creating art. The reason he is stlll writing is that he hasn't lost the thrill of being the one to create something.

They are both such an inspiration-I love it when greats create together. There are good things in the world!

@@sharigraves6385 they're much older by a decade.

This is one of the greatest interviews!!! Thank you!!!

Wow! What a pair of enormous creative talents! And that they're working TOGETHER now??? How cool is that. Thanks!!
This guy is like a 60 year old who is on his game. God Bless.

The dynamics of this interview just remind me how much i miss having grandparents…
I love these segments so much! Steven is a great interviewer. What a great demolisher of ageism!!!
Just adore these guys....kudos to SC

I feel that way when I write a joke sometimes. "Well, that exists now."
Of course, it's a negative feeling as often as a positive one.
Such great rapport between them. What a delight.
I love the substance that you bring to television with conversations like this. “Something is there that was not there before,” what a lovely thought about creativity.
This was an absolute privilege Thank you
WOW!!! Thank you!!!
“When the blank page turns into - not an accusation - but an idea.” Excellent. And beautiful.
I love that Colbert has, not just Broadway actors, but composers on his show!
Oh my gosh! What a great interview, great subjects, what an absolute privilege ❤ thank you
What a beautiful model for venerating our elders - something Americans are generally not accustomed to celebrating, at
T least in public culture
Stephen, you are a genius. Your interviews are always thought provoking, you are interested, well prepared. I never feel you are reading your questions. Finally you are respectful of your guests. Thank you.
"the blank page turning from an accusation into a possibility" - brilliant.
Beautiful to see three people, three men, of three generations, so real, so respectful.
WOW Colbert!! Those two, and you. Such a great clip for theater, artists, singers, musicians-- just great-- love that💗
He needs a solo interview - at least two hours
Thank you so much for taking the time to publish and show this wonderful longer worth Wild incredible interview
They are a great duo.
Lovely conversation. Musical geniuses!!

I want someone who looks at me the way LMM looks at John Kander lol
I want to know who Lin-Manuel is pointing out in the audience to John at the beginning of the segment.
I thought perhaps there was a special projection on the theater's domed ceiling that had something to do with their project.
Imagination .. note to young people .. that is what people are attracted to .. be imaginative
WONDERFUL
♥️

"It's an adventure. If you don't put some God up there, telling you that's no good, then you can go ahead and..just do it". I absolutely love this!
Such a wealth. Thank you.
aww god i love LMM i love his eagerness
Wisdom! There’s no people like show people!!
It’s a miracle.. even to the creator himself 😲😌
Couple geniuses

The 5h interview with Tate would be Goated
👏👏👏🙌 See when you exercise your mind continually like he artistically does, you can be 96 and still be sharp af! 😎👍

Unless John Kander is 130 years old then they are not separated by 3 generations.
