2018 Aprilia RSV4 RF Vs. Ducati Panigale V4 S - Part 1: Track

  • We teased you recently with a dyno shootout between the Aprilia RSV4 RF and the Ducati Panigale V4 S, with the Ducati blowing the doors off the less powerful - and smaller displacing - Aprilia to the tune of 187 hp for the Panigale and 168 hp for the RSV4. This set the stage for our track shootout between the two Italians nicely, as on paper, anyway, the Ducati seemingly has the Aprilia’s number. A bigger engine clearly gives it a power advantage, while 20 pounds less mass on the official MO scales and electronic Öhlins suspension prevails over the RSV4’s extra heft and manual Öhlins bits. But what does that all translate to once the tire warmers come off and fast lap times need to be set?

    The RSV4s are such dope track weapons. On my third Ducati but I swapped for a friend’s priller on a track day and it was just so easy to go fast with. V4s are the best sounding sport engines too, full stop.

    The Ducati is like the hot and crazy one night stand with that chick from the club. One hell of a night for sure, but you probably aren't gonna be able to keep up that lifestyle every day. The Aprilia is the girl you actually want to wake up to the next morning, the girl you can appreciate for everything she is, and who brings the best out in you.

      The thing is, even the Aprillia is the type of wife that goes bungee jumping with you, and pushes you out of the plane while sky diving :D.
      She still brings out the crazy in you.

    Aprilia has been refining and refining the same design for 10 years now. Makes sense it’s that much on point. The Panigale sounds like...a Panigale. They have always been beasts to handle, and I like that. I think with the Panigale, it has improved a ton for street riding. Looking forward to that review. They DO need to slap cruise control on it, though!

  • @JaretCampisi
    @JaretCampisi 5 років тому +86

    I think this was a really fantastic review guys. Very well done. It sounds like the Aprilia is much more consistent and probably faster for the average track rider where the Ducati has an insane engine and might be a bit more out of control. The question I always ask myself as an enthusiast is which bike is more fun and would you want to see in your garage at the end of the day? For me the sex appeal of the Ducati is just too much to resist. haha

    • @TheSuperpod
      @TheSuperpod 5 років тому

      Very much agree. Sex appeal is a big deal for buyers when performance is so close. I think Panigale just needs more seat time and tweaking. I found that I love my V4S more and more as the time and track days go by. Some things were not to my liking at the beginning but with time and some suspension adjustments this bike came to me. I also ride 17 Tuono daily and can fully appreciate the differences. The engine, technology and sex appeal is what sold me V4S, plus having Tuono and RSV4 would be kinda silly =). Great review.

    I groaned when I saw this video was over 24 minutes long, but you captivated me the whole way through. That was the best motorcycle-related video I have seen in a long time. Great job and congratulations! I might pick the Ducati because in the DFW-area the Aprilia dealer network is not great, and the BMW-Ducati-Triumph dealer near me is thriving. Frankly, with my skill level and lack of track experience, I have no business on either of these bikes. PS - Yes, I'm tone-deaf on the technical issues related to the sound and video. I tend to focus on the substance.

    I'd love to hear what suspension "fix" Shane Turpin would recommend for the Panigale V4S. You guys mentioned that the chassis on the Duc was a bit "hinged", but Shane said for a track bike he would go with the Panigale and "fix" the suspension. Was the "instability" of the Duc due to the chassis or the suspension or some combo of both??

  • @Noin007
    @Noin007 5 років тому +1

    Did a group ride with a friend who's got the new Duc V4 (I ride a 2013 RSV4) and I got to put a good 20 miles or so on it in the twisties and I was both impressed and unimpressed. I was impressed by how fun it is and how fast it *feels*, the only bike I've ever ridden that felt more exciting was my old 1098R. The visceral sensation is incredible. But I was really unimpressed by how small of a performance difference there is between it and even my '13, especially with the Duc's price tag. We were neck and neck regardless of which bike we were on.

    Great video guys, and rightly said, you can never go wrong with either of those (plus the other great liter class bikes - S1000RR, R1M, CBR, GSX, ZX10R). The difference is marginal. Almost all the publications last year had a different winner in this class. It all comes down to personal taste, budget and preference.
    Cheers!

    RSV4 is more refined and stable, the Ducati is more powerful but wild and loose - you have that spot on, I have an RSV4 RF & have ridden the Ducati. the 4K difference buys an Akrapovic tail pipe that removes the CAT & flapper valve and adds a few HP Plus Lithium battery to same more weight, and still have enough left over for a couple sets of tyres and a few track days !
    Let’s see how good the Ducati gets after 2 years of recalls and developments 😉 and the new Aprilia will be out then too!

    You know what Clint Eastwood said opinions are like, and he is especially right on these recent comparisons of 2018. I myself have ridden these and more (34yrs) and am not a brand guy; am a straight shooting model focused guy. And no one should have any opinion . . . until they put a leg over the saddle, grip-and-rip the new Duck V4 (S+ preferably as the traction cntrl elct/Ohlins and +++ EVO flash esp w Akra!) and toss it hrd and exit a corner quickshifting full rippage!! No ad here, it WILL change your entire perspective on motorcycles evolution! | And to those waiting as if the next few years are a sound reason to wait, keep in mind this is a 2015 MotoGP motor tuned for the street/track day (as in 3yrs ago folks), and trust me that little could be better than this machine!!!! So much so, I bought a Speziale (yes my very first Duck!), and have been smil'in 1k mi a month (zero issues) on her as my own odometer rolls backwards to my two-stroke days!! 100% AMAZING!!!! 🤩👍🏻

    So I was lucky enough to spend an entire day on the 2018 Ducati Panigale V4 Speciale and on the 2018 Aprilia RSV4 RF Limited Edition with Winglets... Both amazing bikes but for me hands down I much preferred the Aprilia, it was just much more user friendly and a more physically comfortable bike after a full day of riding. But that just my personal experience.

    Can anyone tell me why Ducati which has 1100cc competes with rest of the superbikes which has less than or around 1000cc??? Like this RF which has 999.6cc to be precise.

    I'll say this much... I have had several Ducatis, and no other brand of motorcycle, I've owned, has had more recalls. Only a few weeks after taking delivery, my v4s received a letter in the mail. Ducati makes such a premium bike that it seems, to me, quality control gets placed on the back burner.

    I like the Aprilia personally. I picked up a Tuono RR this year, and sometimes wish I got the RSV instead, but I ride street almost exclusively, so Tuono it is. Street Bike of the year awards again, makes me happier in my choice. I like to see the frame on a bike, and Aprilia does that. I think the Ducati took a step back on the looks of the V4 this time, just because of how weird the frame looks now.

    The 2006 Ducati Desmosedici RR was the first Ducati with the V4 engine layout with a limited run of 1,500 street legal bikes.

    I just had Superbikeunlimited build me a sick rsv4 rf . Will eat the v4s on any track. From the ttx gp rear shock to the fkr front forks, oz gas wheels, Aprilia race ECU, Akra full ti evo, thumb rear brake, 520 conversion, attack rearsets, etc etc. When you take advantage of the Aprilia chassis, theres no beating it. ( still less$ than a Speciale including new RF)

    The Aprilia RSV4 still looks better than the Ducati in my opinion, sounds better too. I'm really anxious to see when or if Aprilia will be roling out the RS 660 as a production bike soon. If they do, I might just go get my motorcycle endorsement a little sooner. Hopefully they'll put it into production for 2020 or 2021.

    Holy crap, what potential for an awesome video and I couldn't watch past 2 minutes. Two of the most exciting bikes out there and you guys were able to make it boring. Run on commentary and sub par video production.

    Interesting TRACK review. Many thanks. On the road though the Aprilia is way more user friendly...... doesn't burn your nads all the time. Chuck a £300-£400 end can on the Aprilia and you will get an extra 8odd horsepower.
    Ducati is like a Ferrari.... over one lap its super quick. But boy do you have to concentrate 100% all of the time which is actually rather tedious and tiring.... not everyone can ride or wants to ride like Marc Marquez.
    Aprilia a bit like a Porsche. Maybe very slightly slower over one lap, but you could do 10/20/30 laps all the same time and it won't want to throw you in a hedge all the time..... Check out what happened to Bautista in World Superbikes last year. Fastest bike, very fast rider and almost uncatchable for the first 5 or 6 races and he spent the rest of the year crashing!
    If you aren't bothered about crashing your own bike maybe Ducati might just have the edge. But check out how much grip you will still have after 5-10 laps. Ducati will screw its tyres up. The Aprilia won't.
    If you think the Aprilia RF is underpowered bear in mind its a 10year old design. Try the new 1100 Aprilia RSV Factory bike. It will walk away from any Duc V4S AND the R version!!!!
    Truly an awesome piece of kit. Better in cold weather conditions and in the rain. Electronics are better and nobody ever mentions it but if you ever ride at night the Ducati,s lights are crap.
    And here in the UK. Aprilia Dealers ( although there aren't that many ) are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful rather than Ducati Dealers who all seem to be up their own arses.
    My summary as an ex Racer myself so hopefully some relevant views. Ducati is the bike for dare I say it poseurs. Aprilia more for the true enthusiast, thinking man,s bike.And an Aprilia with a decent aftermarket exhaust. Wow! Sounds just like a MotoGP bike.
    Both great bikes. But for me save £10,000 and buy a 2nd hand RF . Unless you're a Superhero you will get a better all round bike. And much rarer to see them.

    They talk about the chassis on the Duc being new as it having room to grow, to me that just means that when Aprilia updates their chassis it's totally game over.

    What's with the rolling shutter? Did you film the first segment with a mobile phone? Seriously distracting and nausea inducing when watching on a big screen. Part of the attraction to you channel is the 4K content but this video is much lower quality than normal. Doesn't even look like the footage was graded.

    • @googboog
      @googboog 5 років тому

      That's not rolling shutter, that's just bad compression, most cameras use cmos sensors and they all have a small amount of rolling shutter, that's when stuff goes at angles when something passes by the screen quickly or the camera pans left or right quickly (source : am a camera guy)
      the stuff in this video is just skipping frames, it might be because of youtube's compression as well. I even saw square pixels in the new gopro 7 video

    • @james.shafiei
      @james.shafiei 5 років тому

      @googboog Sorry, mate - you're wrong. Rolling shutter also has a jelly effect when the camera is subjected to vibration. It is amplified when bad software stabilisation is applied in post. Clearly visible in the opening segment when the camera person is walking.
      Compression will just add artifacts when the scene is changing too quickly as the bitrate cannot keep up. Will not add jelly effect.
      (Source: also a camera guy - not that this means anything)

    • @googboog
      @googboog 5 років тому

      i thought you were talking about the frames skipping at 9:55, the shots of the bikes moving past the screen pretty fast. didnt see the jello effect in the beginning. peace
