Good work, huge effort went into this. I know. 👍 and how appropriate after my 3 days to get home in the snow storm, quite literally planes, trains and automobiles. Wonder if the darker color of JWR had any impact? Just the mere suggestion of more malt and cask? Still, if I had to pick out of those it would be the JWR. Drew deserves a rest and a reward. I know how many cuts there is in this project AND how many Photoshop files created 😛
I think Cutty Sark is fantastic for the price. It's so much more pleasant than a dirt cheap bourbon. Smooth as silk. Fine to sip w/ an ice cube...i love it as a higball with ginger ale and lemon slice.
“This is the darkest, it obviously has the most barrel age” um no. It is interesting that even experienced scotch drinkers can be fooled by fake color. If you do this again try to get some black glasses.
Duly noted on the black glasses, but in this line-up (at least for me...I bought the 4 bottles) there was NO hiding/masking the JW Red.... one whiff and you knew it! But even so, on the palate it was the better scotch.....but that's just me. ~Mark
man i got me a bottle of j&b which i usually dont even look at as first impression is its a bottom shelf cheap scotch but for the second time tasting this brand im loving it ,already almost half bottle down after a day ,easy drinking and has a bit of everything in it ,very smooth no harsh bitterness and get a nice mellow mild buzz after a few drams
Watching this while drinking Lagavulin 16, but I definitely appreciate you guys taking one for the team so I know what to order when options are limited.
2:25 Dewars White Label (tried it years ago, but I had no experience with Scotch whiskey) 3:35 Cutty Sark, my favorite, though I prefer it as a Rob Roy or a Rusty Nail, I'll take it neat after I have had a Rob Roy to acclimate the palette. 5:15 J&B Never tried it 7:35 Johnnie Walker Red - I tried it with Coke last year, it tasted like the smell of a used band-aid. I had already started enjoying bourbons and cognacs, so the ethanol didn't hit me as bad. Maybe it was the smokiness, I don't know how it's such a high-selling product.
OK! That is interesting....we should poll everyone to see what the numbers look like then! I mean, we all know that it is very personal and subjective, but just to see how things shake out would be cool! Thanks for sharing! ~Mark
J&B Rare comes closest to my taste preferences among the bottom shelfers that I've tried. It's got a nice citrus note and I think would work well in a highball with a lemon.
Drinking some Bowmore 26yr as I watch you guys describe some bottom shelf blends. Going to have to try some of those. Started with Dewars about 45yrs ago. Haven't had any of the 4 in at least 25 yrs
Great blind side by side taste test! I haven't had J&B or Cutty Sark, but I prefer Dewars by a wide margin over JWR. I probably need to give JWR another shot though, because the last JWR I had was a 50ml bottle that may have been sitting around for awhile. It took a lot of water and ice to choke that little bottle down, but it was the only night cap I had available to me at the time.
Interesting idea and great video. Forced to choose I would pick Dewars, but I’ve only tried JW Red and the Dewars. Would be interesting to try these blind to throw out preconceived notions, and to drink in dark glasses as to not be influenced by color. But in reality, if I’m traveling for a while I would bring a few samples from my own stash. Hard to go wrong there.
Glad I stumbled across this video. I drink mostly better scotches now but a few days ago I saw an old movie and they were drinking Cutty's. So I bought a bottle, which I haven't had for decades. I had some last night and it was way worse than I remembered it, very grainy aftertaste. I have Dewars also, and find that much better than Cutty's. Several years ago someone gave me a bottle of J+B. I found that not drinkable and gave it to a neighbor who actually liked it. I have Walker black at home which I like. I'm also familiar with red and I find it drinkable, though many of my friends hate it. So my order would be Dewars Johnny Walker Red Cutty's Sark J+B.
So, check out our video on some of the older bottlings of a few of these.... if you can get your hands on a J&B bottled in the 80's grab it and I think you'll be very surprised! We were blown away by the difference in the older bottles and how much better they were than the current bottlings. It's like the current bottles are more grain and less quality! Thanks for commenting, ~Mark
That was great! I have been in this situation and I bet so many of your viewers have too. I love that you did it blind. Just for fun you should do this type again in a year, but put one in there that is an expensive blend. See if it pops!
I enjoyed this immensely and got a couple chuckles. I just recently went there. Not to promote my own channel but if you would like to see someone struggle with some cheap blends watch my inexpensive blended scotch face off. It can be hard to try and find positive things to say at times. Great job !
Funny? I'd say it's rather sad. This only gives legitimacy to adding more e150 colorant to manipulate perception. This is why dark glasses are used for truly blind tests.
I was just at Luxury Bahia Principe Fantasia over New Years in Dominican and ran into this same situation. All the same as you tested below, and in my room they had Dewars in the fridge replenished every day. Yes it was all inclusive. It was ok to sip the Dewars late at night when I was binge watching The Punisher on Netflix. I did however find that the main bar had JW black which is what I started drinking about the 3rd day in at night time. Can't complain about that. Great idea here for a vid.
That was fun to watch. I always go with Chivas, but my uncle swears by Old Smuggler as his go to cheap scotch. As a sailor I want to like Cutty Sark, but it really has never tasted good to me. Dewar’s all day for me. JW Red has peat qualities, but it also has an acrid flavor I just can’t get over. Dewar’s doesn’t have as much peat, but it has a nice hint of it, and it’s way smoother and pleasant. Just my opinion. Now JW Black is better than Dewars 12, but not $7 better IMO…which is the price gap between them in my area.
For me, JW Red is the last on this list(total different story with the Black Label though). I would put JB first, Cutty and Dewar's on the second place and JW fourth. No third place for me here 🤣 . And since we're talkin about cheap stuff, best blended for me is Chivas Regal, and best single malt is Glenfiddich.
OK guys, great video and it is very obvious you guys put a lot of time into it… Thank you again for really having this passion and sharing it with the community, you guys are truly awesome… Now I have an obvious question… Why not go to a liquor store and buy a bottle… Or better yet, bring samples of your own??
Hey Jon, thanks for tuning in! Most of the time, going to a liquor store isn't an option as I have no car, but flew in and Ubered to where I am. Now, packing a flask....that's a different story and I have been known to bring a little something nice from home to get me through! ;-) ~Mark
I actually thought about that after I wrote that! I also get that sometimes you want to be able to sit at the bar in the hotel, and bringing your own flask doesn’t always fly well!
Great Stuff. I wouldn't mind seeing this redone with Johnnie Walker vs. Bells, Teacher's, and Cattos or whatever other bottom shelf blends are available
"Experience..." LOL Shawn was right on with that comment. I am not into the grain, but this was educational. I had a feeling you guys would go for the JW Red. =) Damn, now I am jonesin' for a Black. LOL
Very useful and informative video. Thank you for putting in what must have been quite a bit of time and video editing work into a video about cheap booze. Hope to never be faced with those choices :-p

"I used to be a Johnnie Walker Red Fan, and then I tried the Black.." Well, said Mark! That is the exact same circumstance for the beginning of my whisky journey as well! The Takeaway from this Video: Drew is screwed on Domestic flights!😆 Cheers!
I have JW red right now and was hoping it wouldn't win so that I could find a better budget buy. I'll just have to get working again so I don't feel guilty for indulging in buying the good stuff.
lol seems like you all appreciated the jw red(the usual knocked down brand) more when left with the rest of those choice ,and that guy made me laugh talking about the color and how that must mean it has longer aging ,noob lol,,but def compared to those the jw is gonna have the most robust like flavors of peat and malts
What to do while traveling and don't have access to good single malts? Simple...bourbon. There are many commonly available bourbons that are better than the cheaper scotches in my opinion. A lot of bars, even in hotels, are stocking such bourbons as Basil Hayden's or Jeffersons Reserve to name a couple good ones.
Ah man, I would drink any of those 4 any day of the week. You've gotta be able to appreciate "ok" scotch to really enjoy good scotch. I actually really enjoy Cutty. Not Sorry.
Great idea because many of us often faced with this dilemma. When I travel through Spain blends are often the only choice. I simply lower my expectation and choose one. None of them have any complexity or interest and the 40% reinforces the mediocrity. They have some memory of whisky and the alcohol is welcome.
Everyone loves to bash Red Label, but simply put, it is the low end of Johnnie Walker. I will put it one way as a Joke, "What do you call the a medical student who was last in the class but graduated with a doctorate? Doctor." So, Red Label is the low end of Johnnie Walker, but it is still JOHNNIE WALKER.. There are lower scotches than it!
Point taken, but having come from the JW Red beginnings just because it says JW on the label doesn't mean it's great! You're absolutely correct, there are most definitely some lower scotches out there! This particular video was just a fun idea after having traveled a lot for work with poor choices. I now pack my own, hahah! Thanks for the comment! ~Mark
@@Shadx27 Nice! I also pickup Dewars 12 often….I’m looking for the new bottles now. Dewars 12, especially the new revamped version that’s matured in 1st-fill bourbon casks, is a very good blend for about $7-$8 cheaper than Black Label. Maybe it’s not as good as black label, but it’s definitely not $7-$8 lesser in quality. Cheers!
Maybe its just because i’m in Scotland but I’ve always found a bottle of Red Label to cost the same as Highland Park 12 (£25 for both in my local super market atm) which is a far superior drink to me, so much so I wonder why anyone would ever buy Red Label
Scotch 4 Dummies well then, a big thanks goes to my Grandmother for deciding to move to Scotland instead of America back in the 1960s haha constant supply of good quality whisky on the (relatively) cheap Surely whisky supply is should be the main reason for moving to any country?

I get lemon and butterscotch from cutty sark. Couldn't stand it when i got it. Dewars is kinda metallic and acidic tasting. Jw red is just flat out appalling. J&b is decent just kinda light. I'd go with j&b, dewars, jw red and then cutty sark going best to worse.

J&B I recommend adding a splash of tonic water I tried that last night and it wasn't bad it brought a lot of different flavors out in the scotch
One of my favorite episodes yet, because of the blind no influencial lineup. Loving your work guys.

So, Red Label is the low end of Johnnie Walker, but it is still JOHNNIE WALKER..
~Mark
I love the Johnny Walker Black and Green, but no, the Red is not good. Dewars is better and so happens to be cheaper. Dewars White > JW Red all day.
@@samuelrodriguez6707 My go too now is Dewar's 12 year old.
HP 12 and JW Red is NOT the same price here in the states.....and that's not even a fair comparison scotch...hahaha.... HP12 ALL DAY long! ~Mark
Scotch 4 Dummies well then, a big thanks goes to my Grandmother for deciding to move to Scotland instead of America back in the 1960s haha constant supply of good quality whisky on the (relatively) cheap
Surely whisky supply is should be the main reason for moving to any country?
that is very weird drew put dewars last
Drew's weird! LOL
@@Scotch4Dummieshaaa then it kinda makes sense i guess lol,,well you really have to wonder what his selection criteria was because he seem to change his mind mid stream or something went haywire ,seems like all the rest of you guys were picking based on robustness of flavor in which case the order made sense with j&b and cutty being 3rd or 4th but for him to put the dewars (which i class second in terms of flavor ) last made no sense what so ever, did he eat a chocolate bar or something in between tastings?
I prefer Cutty Sark from this four scotches.
J&B FTW, Red label is piss
I like this but for some reason I can't stand JW red. JW red tastes like butter scotch candy to me that I don't like.
I didn't really understand the point of this video. Sorry
Why tell the participants that its budget Whisky? They already know what to say, they aren't very impressed with Any of Them..
Red label is not very good. So how bad are the other ones omg
Dewars is way better than all of the others on list IMO
I get lemon and butterscotch from cutty sark. Couldn't stand it when i got it. Dewars is kinda metallic and acidic tasting. Jw red is just flat out appalling. J&b is decent just kinda light. I'd go with j&b, dewars, jw red and then cutty sark going best to worse.
