I touch up all my Scotches and other whiskeys with a bit of water. Then after for the first time in many, many years having Johnny Walker Black again I thought I was going to give up on Cutty Sark. Just not enough there, but surprisingly it pairs up nice with a stout. Couple years ago had a pint of Guinness with a J&B at a bar and was amazed how well they went together. (Hadn't had J&B in decades. Stayed away from it actually because for some reason it would get me in a crappy, ornery mood. My brother said it did the same thing to him. ) Treats me right these days though. So now I drink my scotches and some Irish whiskeys along with a porter or a stout. They compliment and contrast wonderfully. Cutty Sark went great with a Murphy's.
Was looking for a nice entry level Scotch, this review was very helpful and ultimately led me to purchase this whiskey and I really enjoy it! Thank you for the great review.
DAVE is melting away before our very eyes. Looking fit sir! Cutty Sark is a whisky blend I have tried to enjoy over the years. I just can’t. Best described by my friends at the LA Whisky society as a mix of white wine and piss. Lol.
Nice pun at the end :) Thanks for reviewing this blend. The comment about it not being a good mixer is helpful as well. I am intrigued with scotch and lemon, so am looking for an inexpensive blend that is good on its own, and in cocktails.
Loving the blended reviews! I love sampling a range of whiskies not just the expensive ones and there are definitely some gems out there. Surprisingly it has been sunny in Glasgow for three weeks so Iv got Johnny Walker Red, Ice, a lemon and soda water to enjoy. All whisky has its time and place and blends to me are as important as malts. Thanks again guys😎
One of my favorite blended, they called it the light scotch because of its color. Nice one. I can see a nice bottle of Cragganmore 12 at the back next to a 101 WildTurkey Bourbon. Love these too. Nice video guys. Can I recommend a video on another cheap one? William Lawson or Black n White.
Cutty was the first bottle of liquor that I owned. I was under aged and headed to Prom. It really takes me back and (if I'm honest) I think Cutty has the coolest label in all of boozedom.
I always enjoy this whisky and I could relate to the review. It always gets promoted as a mixing whisky which kind of detracts from the fact its good neat. Cheers guys.
That's not too surprising. Very light bodied Scotch like this is extremely popular in Spain and Italy, so I'd assume the Portuguese tastes were not far away.
The Single Malt Review yeah it was available in most bars and supermarkets. I might try and get myself a bottle so it will stop me for going for my more expensive bottles most evenings.
I’ve always wondered if this considered bottom shelf Scotch here in the United States was any good. Was definitely attracted to the naval theme label, and after seeing this review I’ll probably pick up a bottle the next time I’m at the liquor store! Thanks Single Malt Review!
Always happy to help. I think that if there is a bottom shelf then Cutty is pretty well near the top of it. Let us know what you think of the whisky when you try it.
Nosing I was able to pick up on notes of milk chocolate, almonds, pear and banana. And with the taste I found honey, butterscotch and vanilla. A surprisingly complex budget blended scotch. Worth every penny of the $15.99 USD that I paid for it.
Good to know. No "savage edge coming to slash your nostrils"...... High praise indeed! Anyway I am just about to open a bottle and I feel a lot better about it already.
I know most of your reviews are done neat, but I was wondering if you'd ever tried any of these bottom shelf whiskey's in a cocktail? Cutty is excellent with ginger ale in a Collins glass. Try it and see what you think?
⛽ Gasoline and Curry Sark are indistinguishable. One has an octane rating, the other a similar proof number. That's it. 3:44 These guys actually get addicted to huffing gasoline.
fellas although i have yet to try as i recently got a bottle sitting on my shelf but i think the look and style of this whisky is similar to j&b rare perhaps even lighter, really enjoyed this review and rewound it a few times to understand what you said as it's informative, funny you say it's a bit more expensive than famous grouse which around here is $29.95cnd and in the states where i got the cutty from for $18.99us it comes to $23.69cnd doing the currency exchange so much cheaper than even the lowest priced whisky here so it depends where you get it ,perhaps had it been sold in canada where im at it may be more expensive than grouse or equal, but i am having trouble finding any info regarding the blends ,amounts or how it's made etc for some reason, if you guys have any helpful links would you be so kind to share them in the reply, thank you
Getting hard info about the composition of these 'big' blends is usually a closely guarded secret, so finding out what's actually in there can be impossible. Most blends (this included) are typically around 60% grain whisky from one of a handful of huge factories, and then a multitude of malt whiskys (over 40 here). I understand that Glenrothes makes up the majority of the malt content however, if you're familiar with that distillery.
@@TheSingleMaltReview well there dont even seem to be any basic info like you find on others where they tell you there are like up to 40 whiskies or mention a few of the places they come from i cant even find anything about the whiskies or the amounts or any basic info here like you find on j&b rare or dewars etc not even what style it is perhaps speyside ,,you mentioned up to 40 malts? wow wonder how many grains then and yes i heard of glenrothes but not to familiar with them other than how popular they are ,but im trying to get links to more on this one and having a hard time ,ill have to keep looking at reviews
@@TheSingleMaltReview ahh here we " owned by the Edrington group which means it should be no surprise that it supposedly contains both Highland Park and Macallan single malts. Their official documentation states that it’s “mostly Speyside” whisky and looking around the web the speculations about what else is in there support that claim with Glenrothes and Tamdhu being the most commonly mentioned. I’ve also seen Bunnahabhain and Glengoyne mentioned, but without the distillery saying so it’s all speculation."
It's probably a somewhat polarizing blend, given that it is so very light bodied. I wouldn't have ever described it as particularly sweet though, and definitely not sour. I'd be a little bit suspicious of whatever bottle that came out of.

It certainly has the most enduring label around I think.
Very true. To me, Dewars White Label and J&B are stalwarts too.

Interesting observations, both of you guys..
I saw this everywhere in Portugal a few weeks back when I was on holiday. I did try a dram and didn't mind it however I was drunk at the time.

I agree with your assessment of this whisky.
This is my favorite 'cheap' blend.
very nice black cat,,used to have one like that but it got fat lol,,had a taby back home which was my first as a kid ,called it mango
Love the presentation of the whiskey, abhor the taste of it. :D

funny how the bottle is down to 1/4th but the way you guys are talking make it sound like you just trying this out for the first time lol

In the USA cutty is about 10 dollars cheaper than famous grouse

say is that a litre or so bottle? looks bigger than the 750ml
I'm pretty sure that one was just a 750ml, but there's plenty of 1L bottles around for sure.
@@TheSingleMaltReview shape and label makes it look fatter than my skinnier looking 750ml bottle ,,perhaps the cam
Why does the guy in the left look like Tim from Tim and Eric?
I like j&b slightly better... But it is very fruity and light with honey notes
Crunchy? More a whisky suited to hand to hand combat in other words?
More of a texture in this case. Imagine chewing on cleanly flavored, lightly malted grains.
would you say j&b rare is a bit more robust than cutty?
I'd say almost all of the standard blends are more robust. Cutty Sark is one of the most light bodied bottlings available.
@@TheSingleMaltReview ok but would you place j&b second?
@@ARCSTREAMS Yes I'd say J&B Rare is definitely a close second, along with Black and White.
@@TheSingleMaltReview thank you,,interesting i should try black n white if i can find it
Whisky: Read the label and copy.
just use distilled water
8-11 year old malts in it
