This was my grandma’s favorite whiskey. She had at least one glass of scotch everyday (usually more) and this was what was in her cabinet when she passed. We went to her favorite bar after the service and the served us all a pour of Cutty Sark on the rocks because that’s how she like it. I thought it was terrible, but after getting into whiskey, and watching your review, I might just go pick up a bottle and try it neat. Thanks you guys! I’ve learned a shit ton from you. Cheers!

Daniel, I have a question on smelling whisk(e)y. When visiting Scotland this summer, I toured the Glenfiddich distillery, where during our tasting, the tour guide told us to blow into the Glencairn to move all of the pure alcohol vapors out of the glass, allowing us to really get in there and smell the intricacies of the whisk(e)y rather than just the alcohol vapor. If you could try this on an episode and let me know what you think, I think it could help a lot of the people who say they can't get past the alcohol on the nose!
This is for Rex A friend and I were on a boat drinking whisky. He pulled out some cigars but forgot to bring any matches or lighters. So I took one of the cigars and threw it overboard, and the whole boat became a cigar lighter. You're welcome.
my grandfather always seemed to have a bottle of cutty stashed away in a kitchen cabinet. my grandfather said on occasion, there's nothing wrong with drinking whisky, as long as you have a shot for medicinal purposes. he only took a shot for his arthritis. he lived to be 100, and always had a sharp mind
For New Years Eve, I did a Whisky trio. I started with MacAllan 12, then went to Auchentoshan 12, and finished with Ardbeg An Oa. By that point, I'd be ready for something to eat, which would reset my palate, and I'd start the rotation all over again. Talk about a good day!
My dad just gave me a bottle of cutty sark that is from the 70’s. I haven’t cracked it open yet because I was going to save it for a special occasion. But I did just buy a new pack of socks and that is pretty special......
I'm pleasantly surprised this makes 2 days in a row where the whiskey being reviewed is actually a whiskey that I have heard of and can actually find in my local liquor superstore!
I once went to a blind whisky tasting, and (what turned out to be) the Cutty Sark surprised everyone once it's identity was revealed. I think most of us would have considered it "swill" before that, but it earned some respect.

Try the Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition if you haven't already. It was done as a salute to Capt. McCoy and I was pleasantly surprised by it. I'm usually not one to buy cheap blends but I found it marked down to $7 at a grocery store so I picked it up. No regrets either.
When I was at the liquor store the other day, I noticed this whisky. I picked it up for just a moment, but put it back because I didn't know anything about it. But if the patron saint of whisky recommends it, I will pick it up.
Haha, yes sir! It's actually pretty nice. Nothing to really brag about either, but it's good for a cheap blend. Prob not a go-to sipping whisky but works well in cocktails. It's bottled at 50% ABV too which is nice.
Since I'm fairly new to the scotch game, maybe you can tell me if it will align with my tastes. So far, I've tried Monkey Shoulder, Glenlivet 12, Aberlour 12, Glengoyne 10, Great King Street, and Naked Grouse. The frontrunners for my favorite are the Great King Street and the Glengoyne 10.
IMHO CS Prohibition is very well made but tastes more like a grain whisky. Toffee, etc. It's not quite "like" a single malt, nor like a cheap mixing blend.
I inherited one of those clock parts framed art of The Cutty Sark, which was cool because I had visited the actual Cutty Sark when I was in London in 1988. Then, I recently acquired a cool illuminated Cutty Sark Bell Bar dodad, which looks good on my home bar table. So I had to go out and buy a bottle of Cutty Sark whiskey. I don't drink a lot, but I love the art of all. And being a history buff, I really enjoyed learning about the label. Now, Ilm complete! Thank you!
Cold ? It's 6 here in Illinois. Here's a question . Is there such a thing as whiskey or bourbon that go well in winter ? Likewise are there those that are good in summer ? Or it really doesn't matter . Interested on hearing your thoughts or opinions. Thanks
Hey great channel just found it before Christmas and have been binging heavy and learning a lot. I just found a bottle of yellow spot and grabbed it and was wondering if you plan on doing a episode on it (great whiskey)
The Lagavulin comment story made me think of my buddy coming over last night. He saw my Stranahan's on the counter and since he used to live in Denver and drove past the distillery all the time, he wanted try it. I poured him some and, since it was a cold night, poured myself some Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength. He was standing over five feet away and caught of whiff of my glass. He said "holy shit man what are you drinking??" I told him to take a sniff of it and held out my Glencairn. You would have thought he was a 13 year old trying a cigarette for the first time! Coughing, gagging, choking, literally backpedaled away from me! He finished his Stranahan's a while later and I forced him to take a sip of mine. Pretty sure he hated it with a passion; eyes watering he just said "oh man it just keeps going and going I think I need some water!" Fun times guys, fun times.
cold? I had a glass of achentoshan 12 and a cigar outside when it was -5F (Upper Michigan) You are inside and in Texas. Love the videos! Keep them coming.
Can someon alcohol wise answer my question? Does the sun, that is directly pointing at the bottles on the shelfs destroy the alcohol? Can it have some damaging effect? And how long can you keep an open bottle of red wine in fridge?
Happy 2018 Guys and thanks for reading the comment! I’ll try Caol Ila and Laphroaig very soon. The scoff alone makes me want to try the Brimstone as well. Thanks again and keep up the great channel.
Great work guys! Just a question I’ve only tasted scotch whisky. Some example bottles I currently have are laddie classic, Glenlivet 18. What are some good whiskys from different areas to start off with (America, Japan or Australian)

Thank you J Z, Lagavulin 16 is amazing and even mine is running very low, thinking about getting the distiller edition as well as I've heard great things about it.
I picked up a bottle of Laphroiag Select the other day, and it is pretty light and entry level. How would you say it compares to Black Bottle? I am considering picking up some. Thanks!
I wish they had black bottle at my local store.. I've been wanting to buy it since the time you did the episode of comparing black bottle with JW double black 🙁
what other good Whiskey to drink i had Crown Royal & Jack Daniel's whiskey now im trying blended scotch whisky..... just dont know what one that has taste with light after burn in ur mouth ?
Gentlemen, what do you guys think about doing a entire brand or lineup of whisky for comparison on an episode? For example, try the different expressions of Ardbeg, or Balvenie and let us know your opinions based on the differences in taste and price point. I completely understand taste and price change based on where you live and your preferences, however, I feel it would help me to warrant spending the additional money for a different bottle if I know the difference. Stay Magnificent! And Happy New Year!
I'm drinking Cutty Sark as we speak, no mixes, just raw. 2 shots down and it starts to kick in, very fast kick I must say. beautiful. taste? yes I drank better ones, but it has quite interesting blend of oak in it. if I didn't know the price, I would have rated it much higher. it also has a proper whiskey aftertaste. I have to say, it is well worth it if you are planning to get high and engage in some nice activities afterwards. where I live = in tropics, this seems like a very good deal if you intend to get creative and active. enough said
Came across your page not to long ago and I really enjoy it. Can you guys review "Virginia Black"? My sister wanted it for Christmas, Only because the musician Drake is part owner, I didn't get it Hahaha! Cheers.
Hello whishky vault .. right now.. drinking CS in INDIA.. feels like fruity and over the top.. Great VFM.. Highly appreciated for Indian Market ... GOR FOR IT GUYS. WILL GONNA LOVE IT..
The company I work for has a 'Weekend of Chocolate' event every year around Valentines' Day, and this year one of the featured events is a whisky pairing with what sounded like an array of Compass Box whiskies. It's so hard to find Compass Box around me, so I'm keen to go, but will the pairing with chocolate distort the flavors I find in the whiskies? Also, it's $40 which sounds like a decent deal to me. Love to hear your thoughts and keep up the good work!
Definitely do it! And BTW, Toll Booth, good to see you again! Even with the chocolate, you'll still get to try a bunch of compass box, and that's awesome.
Hey Daniel and Rex, I've been a long time whiskey guy and just started watching your channel which is great! A lot of terms I didn't know which is good because I was always at a loss for a term for what I was tasting or smelling.. Question: Maybe I haven't gotten to them yet but have you done any reviews on any Japaneese whiskeys? Ie: Yamazaki or Suntori etc... I've been dying to get a hold of a bottle but never have enough money and wondered what you think before I start saving... Thanks and keep on keepin on..
I'm wondering if you (Daniel) have watched the "Scotch Test Dummies"? They're pretty funny. One reason to watch is to pick up on some additional interesting ideas, whisky related. For example various whisky comparison ideas. Scotch Test Dummies is my favorite whisky review channel. I've learned quite a lot from your channel also. For example when I pour a dram from my collection, inspired by an early episode of yours I now will routinely pour a second dram and compare the two. More recently I'll try a favorite Scotch and also a Bourbon or other corn based whisky. The comparing of disparate tastes add to the experience. I'm going to write a note to the STDs mentioning your ideas on comparing two pours. I think that's great general information for all whisky lovers. By the way there's a benefit to the way Bart and Scott started their video and whisky hobby by declaring themselves to be "dummies" on the subject... beginners... This allows them to have fun with the subject, enjoy what they're doing, share whatever they think they know, yet not get hung up about imperfections. This kind of thing is freeing. Your thoughts?
Ok I hope this channel is still relevant. I'm :26 in, i've already liked and subbed. I LOVE the energy (and that wall to the left...) also, damn over 2 years old and only 10 dislikes? I'm hooked. future me here. saw video uploaded 6 days ago. FUCK YEAH
Somehow, watching these videos has allowed Rex's mooching magnificence to rub off on me - last weekend I brought a bottle of Blanton's to a friend's house, and came away with pours from a George T. Stagg, a George Washington Premium Rye, and to top it all off, a Pappy 20. I think my conscience is getting the best of me and I want to bring another unique rye/bourbon, but lottery releases and thousands of dollars gray market purchases are out of play - would you please suggest a whisk(e)y that is generally available, but a bit off the beaten path to share? Also, if you are able, I'd suggest a video on the George Washington Rye - supposedly it is only available at his Mt. Vernon, VA home, and it is hand made using his original 1797 recipe, in the same gristmill he used himself. They did not age the drink then, so they do sell a "white dog" version, but also two aged versions, a 2 year and a 4 year. Seems like a great history topic for the channel. Love the videos, it has helped to expand my tasting vocabulary! - Ted
That GW Rye is pretty damn pricey, especially the aged stuff, and it's only a damn rye which both these 2 hate. If you send a bottle in though, it might make it.
Hey guys - JP from Sydney Aus - 2 questions - Do any of the Somm to be's bring an empty bottle and make their own infinity? Also im flying to the US this month but not going to be in Austin ( couple of hrs in Houston airport then Boston, Philly, Vegas and home.) Is there a way i can bring an Aussie whiskey with me and send it to you from within the US? My resolution for 2018 is to become an Magnificent Bastard! Love JP
I am a bartender and in our well the scotch is Cutty Sark. You wouldn't believe how much griping we get, but it makes me laugh because most the time they are looking for Dewars or Johnny Walker. I don't know how you guys feel, but to me a lot of those lower tier blended scotch whiskeys are too close within range to care, but this is also coming from a guy who prefers Ardbeg.
Hey, guys! I will admit that I'm not the biggest partaker of drinking alcohol. I find the bitter taste of it off putting. Well, at least I did until this last year. In 2017, I have started going to parties where I wanted to taste what my friends were. I have found that I like ciders and desert drinks, like port and sherry. Stuff that isn't bitter like beer. In December, for a white elephant present, I received/stole a gift containing a bottle of Jameson. Now, I have had Jameson before, but I would always get overwhelmed by, what I assume, is the taste of alcohol. I began to research online how to drink whisk(e)y and stumbled upon your channel through the Modern Rogue. Last week, I opened the said bottle of Jameson and shared it with my dad and brother-in-law. At first, I was overwhelmed by the taste of cleaner. However, as I fought past the taste, I started picking up another flavor! The flavor reminded me of an apple-tini that I had almost 12 years previous to now! I asked my brother-in-law if he could get it, and he did! Thank you guys for helping me get more interested in going to parties! You are both gods among men. Daniel the god of Nerdiness and Rex the god of Moochiness.
Hey, Daniel! I've got a question for you about the taste of Jameson. I'm getting overwhelmed with the alcohol taste, is this normal? I'm getting hints of stuff, but the flavors are really buried for me. Also, I'm thinking about trying Monkey shoulder next, but I'm slightly worried about spending $40 on something that tastes like alcohol. Will I get the same overwhelming bitter/burning alcohol taste in other whisk(e)ys, or can it be that the process Jameson goes through and that irish whiskeys aren't my thing? Thanks for your time!
Cutty Sark & Black Bottle from 80' were much better. Especially the Black Bottle. The recent releases are made to be more popular but they lost the big peat impact they used to have. Cutty Sark used to have much more character. I am glad there are still bottles around to taste the difference
I got a cool little Whiskey Bottle i know nothing about and maybe you two could shed some history on me. It is a mini bottle i can barley make the label out but it says "IMPORTED Canadian Club, Blended Canadian Whisky. Hiram Walker & Sons Limited" i have no clue how old this little brown glass bottle is but its still sealed and i guess ill keep it that way.
If you drink a bottle in less than 3 months, you have nothing to worry about. A mostly full bottle will will last you years. half full at least a year. less than 1/4 and you have a few months before the evaporation becomes a problem.
This was my grandma’s favorite whiskey. She had at least one glass of scotch everyday (usually more) and this was what was in her cabinet when she passed. If the bottle is still sealed, it could be 50yrs old and still be fine!
You should resolve to make sure the mic is turned on before shooting.
Even with the chocolate, you'll still get to try a bunch of compass box, and that's awesome.
hahaha. Rex making the ultimate Mooch New Year's Resolution for Daniel. Mooch, Ninja Level!
Glad you're here! We're a big fan of them. Here's a playlist of the Japanese whisky we've reviewed! ua-cam.com/video/xsOfoS8vfU4/v-deo.html
Have you guys reviewed black and white blended scotch yet? I see it in the store for about $25.
We watch them as well, and dig their channel! Solid guys, and kickass content.
I got a bottle of Cutty Sark as a gift. I'm an Ardbeg and Kilchoman fan, so this is almost tasteless. It's not bad for making Irish Coffee, though.
You guys are lucky its only -5 here in il. Also Rex i can't believe you haven't brought the giant flask back into the show lol
The best New Years Resolution. Watch more Whiskey Vault and drink more whisky! Skål from a Tennessee Heathen!
Any thoughts about the "Prohibition edition" ?
Have you reviewed J&B Rare? Could you if possible?
It's not rare.
Ok I hope this channel is still relevant. I'm :26 in, i've already liked and subbed. I LOVE the energy (and that wall to the left...) also, damn over 2 years old and only 10 dislikes? I'm hooked.
future me here. saw video uploaded 6 days ago. FUCK YEAH
Good afternoon Rex and Daniel can someone in the vault answer way its so cold here in central Texas?
Joseph Candelaria it's winter
What is this winter you speak of?
It's all in perspective. I'm in Minnesota! (-15° ) What better reason to drink then "to stay warm!"
Shawn W I'm in Wisconsin first day above zero in awhile.
Here because of the movie Green Book
Dr.shirley always had this bottle packed and now I must try.
Me 2, just finished the movie about 10 minutes ago.
That was my stepdad’s first Scotch
Hey guys - JP from Sydney Aus -
2 questions - Do any of the Somm to be's bring an empty bottle and make their own infinity? Also im flying to the US this month but not going to be in Austin ( couple of hrs in Houston airport then Boston, Philly, Vegas and home.) Is there a way i can bring an Aussie whiskey with me and send it to you from within the US? My resolution for 2018 is to become an Magnificent Bastard!
Love JP
Feel free to mail it in from anywhere! And enjoy the US trip!
In the 50s....it was -3°F where I am this morning lol, want to trade places guys?
I am a bartender and in our well the scotch is Cutty Sark. You wouldn't believe how much griping we get, but it makes me laugh because most the time they are looking for Dewars or Johnny Walker. I don't know how you guys feel, but to me a lot of those lower tier blended scotch whiskeys are too close within range to care, but this is also coming from a guy who prefers Ardbeg.
hahahaha. not surprising. I'd take Cutty over Dewars. Not sure about the Walker. And yes, Ardbeg for the win!
As long as the Whiskey is still liquid it's not too cold.
Have y'all tried defiant it made in NC
it's a single malt
yeah, not really a fan of it though.
Whiskey Vault
I trying to get into this whiskey thing like y'all and started with makers maker the only thing I taste is the barrel notes

Jesse Faucette get different whisky
What do you recommend
more practice is about all you can do!
I always called this "Cutty Shark" How embarrassing. Happy New Year. Looking forward to your 2018 videos.
Chad fights back! well timed cut right there.
It also shows up in movie Green Book
Chad, master editor.
I love stories like this! Welcome to the Tribe.
Dang I wish it was in the 50's in Michigan, it's in the negative right now for us
guys what is the song to be played when i finish a bootle of whisky ? please tell me !
it's raining men... of course!
There's only one song for such an occasion, ua-cam.com/video/l5aZJBLAu1E/v-deo.html
yes! tranks !
tranks man!
Sounds like one of the 1960's era Canadian Club taster bottles. Cool!
Look up "killing whisky history", I think the channel is called " diving for pearls". Great guy. He explains how to date bottles.
Can you guys please do Lismore Scotch?? It’s cheap and I wanna buy but before I do I need the Boys approval:))
strange ,other reviews call for peat in the cutty
Happy new year
How do you value talisker 10 on smoke lvl?
fairly light in the category of smoky. Almost more peppery than outright smoke for me.
Maybe it's just me, but, I don't get any smoke, but it does have this odd sort of brine in the back-end.
What happens to Whisk(e)y if left in the bottle for years?
If you drink a bottle in less than 3 months, you have nothing to worry about. A mostly full bottle will will last you years. half full at least a year. less than 1/4 and you have a few months before the evaporation becomes a problem.
In the 50s that’s not that cold [ to a Canadian}
