A great song, with one of the finest lines ever written "Look at him now/Another used man/Bearing the passing of his dignity with all the courage that he can"A criminally underrated songwriter and musician - much missed.
One of my top ten favorites, and one of the few that makes me cry like a little girl. This song touched me so much I wish I was there for him in his fragile moments. So sad he took his life. Tragic.
A sad portent perhaps to his inner angst that he would eventually succumb to. A very close second to my forever favourite, Mark Hollis. Both had the courage to be themselves and express their uniqueness in their now eternal songs.
I'm seventeen, and unfortunately never got the opportunity to see Stuart live, but he was a beautiful person, and musician. Whatever troubles lead to his death had to be so bad, that it makes me evaluate my problems, and i conclude their petty, compared to whatever Stuart was going through. It's sad, I grew up listening to this music, and as a kid I thought "the guy whos singing must be the happiest man alive." Now that I'm older it astonishes me. You can hear Stuarts pain in a lot of his music.
So privileged to see Stuart when I was 15yrs old at ingliston one of the best concerts I've ever experienced it was rocking I was buzzing for days you'll never know how much you helped me through my teens you'll never be forgotten ❤️
Masterpiece of music. The more I listen to this beautiful piece the more things become relevant. I've loved Big Country since the early 80s. Superb, and certainly underrated as a band. Rip Stuart.
I know. Saw an interview during the Final Fling tour where he said he'd toured so much and now he wanted to spend time with the people that mattered to him. Less than a year later his marriage is dissolving, he's in the US and away from touring and his support system. Maybe that was it? Don't know. Haunts me, esp. when I hear Ships. Was that him talking about himself? Such obvious incredible talent, and from everything I've read just a nice guy to meet.
Was lucky enough to see Stuart and the band at the final fling tour in Manchester, they played three encors! He seemed so genuinely happy on stage with the rest of the group. Will always be my best concert, not because he's gone, it was just that special. RIP Stuart
Enjoyed so many nights with you guys especially at The Barrowlands. There's nothing to beat a Glasgow gig. God bless you Stuart. You left us with such beautiful poetry. X
one of the best, hard working, talented and long running bands ever , they got me thru teenage angst, calmed me in my twenties and thirties, and now in my forties my wife and i still listen and remember
Saw Stuart and the boys in 92, so under rated...still drive around LA with them blasting out...another talented soul to play in the clouds....RIP Stuart....
How beautiful was this man? And what a great voice too. A great loss, really. I hope he finally found peace, poor Stuart. Some demons are very hard to defeat.
.....errr... wow!!! I've just been stopped dead in my tracks listening to this! I only know the big hits like 'Chance' and 'In A Big Country', but this is just in a different league. So sad he's not here anymore!
Stuart's voice haunts me. It so depressing to think that his genius is no longer with us. He had an ability to write songs and deliver them with meaning. I think everyone can find a Big Country song that they can relate to. The music world is a much sadder place without Stuart in it. RIP :(
Grew up listening to these with my Dad who sadly passed away 6 year ago, we played this song at his funeral. The sad death of Stuart is a great loss to today's music. RIP fella 😔 x
such a talent! You can understand to an extent why, but he had so much going for him! So sad.... but he left so many good memories. One of my first gigs, Big Country at Newcastle City Hall early eighties! Never forgotten RIP big man
Without doubt, the most under-rated band of all time. This is Stuart at his most meloncholy and beautiful. Oh,the fragility of love and life. RIP my friend.....
Stuart was a fantastic singer and musician, and like me a proud scotsman. This is one of my favourite songs ever, god bless Stuart you are very much loved and missed
I’ve listened to this band pretty much every day of my life since 1983. They had everything... along with Stuart’s genius, I could listen to Mark’s drumming for an eternity.
One of the greatest songs ever written. One of the greatest songwriters ever. He didn't have to go the way he did. Wherever he is now, one way or another, I hope he's at peace.
how anyone can 'dislike' anything written or performed by Stuart Adamson / BIg Country is beyond belief. The words, the melodies, the messages.....will remain with me forever.
My gawd. I was into Big Country a long long time ago and the other day decided to play the early albums i had. Following this i purchased 'Without the aid of a safety net' and listened to this track....oh my god, pure genius and would say one of my fave BC songs. Haven't got Buffalo Skinners but on your post i am going straight out to get it.
I started going on nights out when Stuart first created BC in the early 80's and I always wore their checked shirts, sadly missed, always remembered, RIP
great song, cant believe i will never get to see them live again, they were simply outstanding live probably the best ive ever seen and that includes floyd and james who are pretty good
no one will ever come close to stuart in my eyes a truly talented lost soul who touched so many people with his beautiful lyrics and fantastic guitar work what an inspiration to so many people if only he could of seen how he meant to all of his fans he might still be here today, rest in peace stuart my hero my friend never forgotten x
Saw them last night in Notts, Mike Peters did great job , loved the Alarm too, but so sad, Stuart could have been there... Big Country spirit lives on... Stay ALIVE !!!
I Love music! I am 48 and embarrassed (sorta) that I only knew the Big Country "hits" until recently. It's great to hear this awesome music for the first time. Saw Mike Peters from the Alarm recently, found out he sang with BC for a bit and months later...here I am!
First listened to big country in high school in the early 80s - and I was a metal head! Their music struck deep in my soul! I have been a fan ever since, now at 51 I love them even more. They never received half of the recognition they deserved! This song is just one of the greats from their list of awesome music!
My brother died few years ago and this song was one of his latest songs what listened. I have never been big fan of this kind of music, but this song i won't never forget.
I absolutely love this song, and could listen to it all day. Something just dawned on my, however....where's the third verse? For me, it ties the whole sentiment of the song together in one final declaration.... "You many walk the line...now you may see it all through.." Then the extra/extended guitar solo kicks in; just incredible.
I remembered my dad used to listen to Big Country,, when I was 7 years old... now here I am, an 11 year old, addicted to this kind of music,, thank u daddy!!! Haha
This is music to live by. Here in the states no one remembers these guys; one day I heard In a Big Country (their only Stateside hit) on the radio and rushed home and spent the next half hour trying to remember the lyrics so I could find it on the net. So glad I did.
Saw Big Country at the Liverpool Empire in the 90's and it was a fantastic gig. God bless you Stuart and thank you for all the songs you've given us. R.I.P.
Stu was a genius. BC best live band ever.! Miss Stu coz i think there was more to come. BC gigs were the only ones i came home battered and bruised. Loved it.!!
I grew up listening to this song, im 18, my dad loves big country, And after a bit of questioning, i found out that my dad named me Calum after Stuarts son, who he went to see at one of his gigs, got recognised by Calum and got to go to the sound check with them, and also hes just got back from seeing Big Country in Nottingham, its sad what happened to Stuart and may he Rest In Peace, Love this song Forever.
I'm 16 now, when I was younger, this was the song I would fall asleep to, the song I'd wake up to and the song I did everything with! I finally found it 11 years later!
Absolutely awesome group loved big country . I went to watch at the Apollo in Manchester in 1986 stuart had his tartan suit . I was only 17 god bless you stuart and thanks for your awesome music 😢😢
It was my dad that listens to Big country and i never really appreciated them, until i heard this song and "In a big country " and now i really enjoy there songs and will listen to them for years to come.
magnificent song and band - i recall the Skids and masquerade and listen to him grow to BC .. we were a blessed generation to have shared the music of this man.. RIP Stuart..
Brilliant .. just Brilliant I was gardening today with headphones listing to this , thinking of my mum who passed last year and all those days bringing us up as a divorced mum in the 70 ‘s struggling but getting the job done .. tears fell with great dignity
I played this wonderfull piece of music in the church at my wifes funeral. She, as well as I, loved it.
Quite simply one of the finest songwriters to walk this earth. Criminally underated band.
TheEcky24 couldn't agree more one of the most under rated bands of all time.
Word!
But the people who love them, really love them.
@@porkulator they have a loyal fan base.
Best band EVER LOVE THEM
One of the most beautful songs ever recorded. I miss you so much Stuart

Everytime I hear this song I start to cry and can't stop untill the song is over, never heard a song with more feeling in it.

私は日本人ですが、彼が大好きです。
35 here
16/12/21 is 20 years since his death, I will raise a glass to him that day, lovely bloke.
Stuart had it all: poetic song-writing skills, incredible lead guitar skills, a nice voice, good looks, and charm. God rest his soul. He was terrific.
The biz like..still get that natural rush from these songs..aitchie..boness
If only he realised.
I even recognized back in Skids days, this guy is something special!
I'm seventeen, and unfortunately never got the opportunity to see Stuart live, but he was a beautiful person, and musician. God bless the memory, let his music live through your soul, cheers.

Unofficially the greatest band on the planet!
The anniversary of your death. Love you, Stuart! I'll listen to everything you left us until the day I die...

So many brilliant albums rip Stuart. I still listen 😂😊
Well said. Stuart was a true poet and a total legend.
Broken ears and broken souls.... This is absolutely the best as it gets.
I am the best singer from Scotland 🏴
Everyone entitled to their own opinion. Comments like this pi** me off.
Incredible band with a genius frontman so much talent it was ridiculous his music touched the heart and soul like no others . Miss you Stuart RIP
Always missed.
One of the best songwriters of his generation. That recognition will come one day.
This man gave the world a daughter who is a singer in her own right..she is very good..worth checking out.
Dont know how anyone could give this a thumbs down!
Mein Gott!!!!!!! Ein Song zum Niederknien.....!!!!!!! Unfassbar.........!!!! Tränen des Dankes für immer!!!!!!!!!!!!
Arguably one of the best songs they have written if NOT the best. A man full of soul a tune full of soul. RIP, YNWA Stuart.

Ships does sound autobiographical. His death is tragic. RIP.
