  • The more recent Warhammer Preview Live streams have been significantly different to the Previews of old, with big style changes and a big shift in how Games Workshop approach them. The question is, have the changes been perfect, or is there room to grow?

    I like that the actual creators of the models are interviewed, but it all feels less genuine than the old style. If they can mix both that would be perfect

    I hate how much the new format feels so “fake” I just like when it’s two excited guys looking at reveals and calling out what they like.

    The way they presented the leviathan lauch box was great, they showed the nids and the marines, they went to each model individualy, talked about the lore made some jokes and they engaged with the audiance.... this latest previous was kinda boring

    I love that they are bringing in the sculptors and painters. It provides a great perspective most of us will never get. Also banging the tired old drum; GW credit your artists and sculptors. Bringing them in for interview gives them a little of the credit they deserve to get.
    And I agree we need a chance to actually look at the models. Panning shots are great in the trailer section of the reveal, but nothing quite beats being able to just look at high res still images, or a 360 of the model. Give us 4-10 seconds to just look at the thing. Let us take in the details.
    Perhaps even let your artists point out things in the image?

    What I want is to keep the current interview-designers format, but change the current model trailers to the older version, where there are a bunch of still images and 360 degree rotating shots of the minis.

    The problem with the reveals stuff is that they feel more corporate these days. I'd personally like either a rotating image of the new models, or the WarCom-style collage of photos on-screen whilst the designers & painters and a presenter-type are talking heads off to one side (you know, like most multi-person streams on UA-cam), discussing the miniatures. maybe changing the photo every now and then to show some interesting/quirky bits of the miniature being talked about. The painters could talk about the big challenges they had (if any) trying to get into small corners, and the designer could describe stuff like how much of a slag it was to design according to the brief.
    If they're talking rules and stuff, have the rules designer on to talk about it, give his/her commentary on it, and their design intent. That way it feels like a bunch if folk having a bit of a chat about the thing without distracting from the thing itself.

    I don't play Heroclix anymore, but when I did, Scott Porter was a great presenter and voice for the new set unboxing previews. He was 100% transparent in his criticism, but was huge fan of both the game and the universe for that particular set. He would comment that some figures were not something he'd ever play, but genuinely brought a positive mood to the setting.

    I think theres pros and cons. On the one hand, I like that the faff is gone. We dont spend the first 15 minutes of every reveal stream not getting reveals. We also get to interview the creators of the models, get insight into the design process we wouldn't have gotten kutside a random Warcomm article that 95% of people would just skip. But on the other hand, it does fee a bit too polished to the point it loses authenticity and there's no little subtle teases of what might be coming, or how these models work on the tabletop we can glean from these pre-recorded segments like the more off-the-cuff ones. So I think if GW could find a happy medium between these two styles we'd get the best of both worlds.

    For me, the perfect format would be the old live one with commentators, they reveal a thing, give us some quick lore on the new thing, how it's supposed to be played and then onto the next reveal. Then in the aftershow, they do interviews with the devs and some Q&As.

    I can understand GW thinking that maybe two hosts/ interviewers covering creators could lead to too much "chat".... but thats why you pre-record and then trim down! Plus it's clear that a bit of banter can serve multiple functions. As you rightly pointed out, they almost have the right set up, its just needing a few tweaks..... and the main one is bringing back a 2nd host, even if its a clear "sidekick" role.
    The old-style initial welcome/chat not only allows for that initial audience feedback (even if its only asking where you are based) but also allows folks to tune in if the twitch stream hasnt automatically clicked in... something that can happen with twitch.
    Reacting to the reveals and interviewing creators sneed only stay our visual focus for a few seconds, and after that it should be 360 shots of the product... and you can keep the interview camera frame as just a small box on the bottom of the screen... honestly, I think most GW employees would prefer that anyway.

    I feel like they tried a little harder to show us the models last time. Like there were images of the models that weren't quite still, but were on a white background and showed off the details with a very VERY slow pan, cut in over top of a shot of the whole battleforce panning. It's a compromise with the cameraman I think. They almost showed us still images of the models, but I feel like the cameraman's lust for panning shots can't be sated that easily.

    I would prefer if they went through all the new models and trailers and a bit of minor talk and then after that was all done cut to the interviews that they did. That way I don't have to watch an hour long presentation to see everything. Though I guess I can always just look at the community articles after.

    I do wish they had better pics of the miniatures, but I'm guessing it's a marketing thing. Like you said, you have to go to their site to get a better look, so by not having it in the preview, they drive more traffic to their site, and potentially more random sales.

  • @madmerlinsart
    @madmerlinsart Місяць тому +2

    I really enjoyed the last 40k preview, haven't watched the AoS one, and I agree. It's better, but it's not quite "chef's kiss" level of better.
    I also liked that they had it available streaming on UA-cam, meaning I didn't have to load the horrible browser app on my PS4 and I could just open YT and watch from the comfort of my bed, whilst playing Tacticus, lol.
    I hope we see more previews where we see the people behind the games, it gets a little repetitive with just two guys saying what they like the best. I love hearing what the designers loved the best and what they hope we'll love the best. Do you know what would be something good for them to add to Warhammer+? Designer interviews, I'd especially love to see one with the team behind Darktide the Boardgame as I've seen nothing but good things about the game (except the comments of "but it's old models!") give us more behind the scenes bits like that and I think you'll find we get a new respect for GW as a company for it.

    I think it depends on where you are. If I were at Adepticon or this Dallas Open, I'd be pretty annoyed to just be shown a UA-cam video.
    But as someone who can't get to the events where they host the previews in front of a crowd, the new format is fine - there are bugs and wrinkles to iron out, but I like the idea of them.
    The bits that need more time:
    Lewis will learn his role as he continues to host these things, but right now he has a few phrases that he over-uses, so he just needs to improve his presentation vocab.
    Model footage - yeah, those panning shots are nice, but the still images, or even on a turntable would be much better.
    And a personal thing - I don't like the couch look.
    I do like the interview, but personal preference, I think it they were seated at a games table when they have a chat, it would be better.

    Old format felt a lot more personable, like it felt like it was made by people who at least seemed more like a fellow hobbyist.

    Yeah, I agree with you, they should just add still pictures of new reveals to the new format and that's pretty much it. I can't believe all those comments talking about old format of talking heads being better, since people were always complaining about it's dragged "fakeness". And now I hear previous format was a good thing? What? Plenty of times I feel like 40k fanbase (at least online) is quite hypocritical and matches GW in level of bullshit it produces.

  • @matthewthomas5657
    @matthewthomas5657 28 днів тому

    Honestly, if they had two guys talking about what they're revealing and hobbying atm and it cuts to Lewis's interview with the design team. BUT the informal chat tended to set up false expectations to the community.... I remember one person said 'this is about half the kroot coming out' when they meant there where three more boxes. I'm very glad the teases are less ambiguous too, the Kruel boys, one eyed swamp and Warcry industry/ spider tribe teases made us all think Fimir, Chaos dwarves vs spider grots respectively so stopping the hype train heading in the wrong direction is great.... it just feels less 'live' and exclusive when its prerecorded stuff.

    The polish of the recent preview just felt a bit off for me, not quite GW / hobby level. On the minis view a lot of us immediately load WHC and look at the images there. Love AoS but slept through that preview as I knew checking WHC in morning would be more useful. Not even checked the VoD for AoS.

    Though I do feel like the extra insight that David and Phil and the others bring, it's still very polished and to corporate... it doesn't feel genuine. As a creator myself I know I would love to babble about my latest creation for hours... but that's not the talk we get.

    Is this made worse by the gap in people? As someone newer to the hobby, I don't care if I see the miniatures on the standard background in the show because I see the reveal show as a show. It's less a thing I used to see the models and more just a show. It is more like a game showcase that lets me know things are coming, but the gameplay is on the company's website. I know what I am going into the show for, and it's more trailers and announcements. But I also understand if you are older in the hobby that account side of things means less to you it's more you are just there to see the models and the talking and show is less important. The fact that I came to Warhammer as a company trying to sell me things means I have a different expectation from the show. I can get good pictures of the models tomorrow. I am just watching the trailers for the show. I like that the models are on the site the next day with higher definitions than the show. That works for me, but I accept it might not work for everyone who liked the old style of the show.

    I heard somewhere the host (Louis?) is an acting coach, so he probably exists just to get pre-prepared monologues delivered correctly after being carefully vetted by the marketing team... it's so soulless. Just let them talk and have fun as the fans that they are too.

  • @ThaLoser

    The old format but with more interviews (prerecorded or otherwise) would have been great. I still remember when they interviewed Jes Goodwin about the Indomitus marines and he seemed a bit bored but his face lit up when they (i guess spontaneously) asked about the fella with the executioner sword and Goodwin started to get really animated talking about his process there... then they ran out of time and had to stop him almost mid sentence.
    It's like they still don't get why we want to see/hear from the people behind the hobby we like so much.

    I like the new format much more. It's shorter, more to the point, talking about with studio team each time, has subtitles and generally at least some production. Detailed shots of the models could be improved, but everyone already goes to check Warhammer Community article for that. Old format was just 2 guys just pointlessly drag things and do useless chit-chat, even when reveals weren't that exciting - because they were obligated to fill the time. The whole argument about old format being full of "enthusiasm" is kinda disingenuous ones - it's still safe corportate-like talk with them choosing their words and pretending they are interested in every reveal. Only thing I miss is the abundance of picture stills, they could include them in the new format more.

  • @nobody_s-here
    @nobody_s-here Місяць тому +1

    To be honest, I don't really like either format. I don't watch the livestreams unless you or Arthur Bones are talking over them, because you make what would be kinda dull much more entertaining. If I had to chose though, I prefer the newer style. The idea is better with the interviews and the more polish as opposed to the older style which was just two dudes talking and sounding varying degrees of kinda forced.
    Of course, it is important to keep in mind that I have no idea what I'm talking about with most things, and this is mostly for the algorithm.

    I think since they started all the meta watch stuff, the direction of the way they present things has changed and in my opinion gone in the wrong direction. It’s turned very “American-style” and lost its “British-style”. That’s probably why it seems kind of fake. Doesn’t help that some of the people who create the models don’t have have the skill set needed to be infront of a camera, which makes sense because that’s not their actual job, but it comes across to me like they can be disinterested in what they are talking about and that’s probably not helped when the stuff they are talking about isn’t new to them at all but likely years old since they worked on it.
    Remember how much more fun the 2015/16/17/18 GW was? The releases were exciting and the marketing was much better, maybe not as professional, but more fun and definitely showed the people making it were invested in the hobby themselves.

  • @stuartspencer2161
    @stuartspencer2161 Місяць тому

    I wouldn't mind the creators being there, if they actually have some insight into how things were designed, rather than giving a rehearsed sales pitch. It would also be nice to actually have more time actually showing the models they are trying to sell, rather than several pans on the screen at one time, and not giving people the opportunity to look at the miniatures, until they get posted up on Warhammer Community.
    The new format feels less personable with the audience, and Games Workshop really needs to make that connection, especially with it's PR disasters over the past few years.

    In the (relatively short) time I’ve been following GW, everything has gradually become more polished, more professional, and noticeably more fake. Presenters get introduced with a first name only, in this artificially friendly style that makes me think of children’s TV, Warcom articles - which used to be funny and feel somewhat genuine - are stuffed with this unbearable “best X EVER” language, and the somewhat human and spontaneous previews have turned into this artificial garbage. It’s obvious that GW have hired real marketing people, but at least from my point of view, it worked a lot better when their communication allowed a bunch of nerds to express their honest enthusiasm about the product. It used to feel like the presenters meant what they were saying, now it increasingly feels like John from Marketing is standing just out of frame holding a gun to their heads. GW’s communication used to have a british understatedness to it which I really liked, and with the current style it kind of feels like forcing Graham Norton to work at Disneyland. Idk, maybe the numbers say that this fake cheerfulness is what Americans want?

    Old ones are better. For one, you tend to get a better look at the models, and for another, the vibe just feels much more honest and less corporate. And yeah, showing me who’s behind the product does feel more corporate because it feels like the typical happy family facade of any standard corporation.
    The only thing about the new ones that’s better is getting a bit of scale comparison for the new models, but that could easily be incorporated into the old style.
