@@GonzaloG5 First, as a native Hoosier (meaning from Indiana), it's amazing that you are coming from Spain. Welcome to our great state! Second, Alonso was such an amazing talent. It was awesome watching him come over and race in the Indy 500. I would love to see him win Indy some day. Also think Palou has a good chance to win. Third, Spaniards are quite a deep, rich, and talented group of racers that come from your country. Alonso, Palou, and a large list of AMAZING riders in the MotoGP class like Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo. Might even have another brewing in Jorge Martin. 😉 Again welcome and have a blast at the Indy 500!

You are a wonderful couple! Love the advice too. Last year (2023) was my first time experiencing the “500”. My 3 sons and 2 grandsons took me on this once in a lifetime trip. From Southern California. The trip was indeed well planned and a great time was had by all. We spent a total of 5 days in both Speedway and Indianapolis. Most importantly, I cannot get over the hospitality and kindness of the local people! People from the Midwest are just the best! For those making the trip should try to spend a few extra days to fully appreciate the city, the Speedway, and the State of Indiana. Extra special was meeting Mario Andretti on legends day. Visiting the museum and taking the tour of the track and kissing the bricks the day after the race was indescribable. Would love to return someday, but at 81 it may not be so easy,
@michaelhutchinson9413. Your comment just gave us the biggest smile. Thank you 😀👍 Sounds like you have a great family. We like the term “Hoosier Hospitality “! I think midwestern people are pretty welcoming 😀 Indy is a sports city, basketball for sure. Lots of golf courses and activities, museums and monuments. Now I’m going to tell you how jealous I am that you met Mario😀 When I was a kid my dad took us to Terre Haute dirt track and I was about five feet from Mario but didn’t have the nerve to say anything ☹ The museum is closed for a major renovation this year. Supposed to be spectacular after the long needed update. Well done by all the boys for such a wonderful trip. Good for you going last year at 80! I have heard terrible things about WiFi and cell reception at the race, there's just way too many people. I'm bringing a scanner, hopefully I can figure out how to use it! 😅

Great info! I’ll be going to my 7th in a row this weekend. Nothing else like it! Roger Penske has done a great job updating the track and improving the facilities. Can’t wait to see the revamped museum next year!
@Tahitian58. Thanks 🙏 7 in a row! Once you get hooked it’s hard to kick the habit 😀. All employees of RP refer to him as Mr. Penske. The track and facilities all looked great last year. @@EJ84x They’ve always said in Indiana, “if you don’t like the weather just wait ten minutes “ Just saw clouds but no rain on Saturday (79/63 temps). Never know during spring. The Little 500! Great! 33 sprint cars starting three abreast on a high banked 1/4 mile track. My dad loved that race !
The IMS app is very helpful too. I used it through qualifications this weekend. It had a live grid of the racers standing as well as a full grid of the cars. Same that you can get in the paper.
From the UK and this is on my list of "must-do" events, hopefully sooner rather than later. Really helpful video, thank you. Hope it stays dry for you this year (2024).

Well done. And try not to cry when they sing "Back Home Again." I'm not a native Hoosier but have lived here since 1973. Growing up in NW Ohio I dreamed of one day attending THE Race. I suppose this will be my 20th or so. Truly the Greatest Spectacle in Racing and possibly in life. I used to say to claim full rights as an American one needed to see two events that are almost unbelievable... the launching of a space shuttle and the Indianapolis 500. No more shuttle launches, but at least will still have the 500.
@richardmourdock2719. Thank you! I hear ya Richard! Between “Back Home” and “Taps” I’m kind of a proud mess. I could go on for hours 😂 20 plus years is a great run. We wish you many more. We’ve heard the same thing about the space shuttle launches. Man I’m sure that would have been amazing. Loved your comments. Have a great race!!
@@ku4uv Please find a way. Like the launch of a shuttle, TV will never, ever begin to capture the moment. You've just got to be there with 400,000 of my closest friends as the spectacle, the ceremonies and not to be left out, the speed of cars that seems unbelieveable. I used to tell friends of a shuttle launch, how when it, rotated on TV, it was virtually out of sight to the naked eye. The same sort of thing with cars going 240mph into a corner.
One thing I would add to the list is a pocket size rain poncho if there is a chance of rain in the forecast. We also take seat cushions to place on the aluminum bleachers because you will sitting on hard bleacher seats all day. As mentioned, sun block is a must, I have seen many people with significant sun burn by the end of the race. Have fun.
@Tc-eo5eb. Absolutely right! Thanks for sharing those tips. The pocket sized poncho is perfect. Sometimes Indiana weather can be a little unpredictable 😀 The cushion is also a great idea especially for first time race goers! Outside of the covered grandstands there is no place to hide from the sun. I did see something about the track installing some new monitors downstairs so people going to bathrooms or concessions could still see the race. Not sure how many there are. Have a great race! Thanks for watching 👍 Hope you enjoy the race in Sitka. Say hey to mom😀
I went in 2018, the year it was extremely hot. It was uncomfortable but nothing was going to stop me from enjoying the race. The best advice I got then was bringing cash to pay to park in someone's front yard in Speedway. It saved me a lot of trouble getting in and out.
@bonelessjack24. Thanks for watching! That’s a great call. We always park at the same yard every year on 30th St. Cash only. Inside the track is cashless. Always have some cash for anything purchased outside the track Walking traffic sometimes moves quicker than the cars😀 Have a good race this year! Hoping the weather holds for Sunday 🙏😀
Amazing Video! I have my tickets already but these are some great tips for a first timer like myself. I wanted to add a tip that IMS now runs their own website to resell tickets now, and all tickets are validated by IMS. This is a safe way to go if you want to buy a re-sold ticket!
IMS had the best ticket office in the world They still have a professional full time staff who are eager to please Any problem you can call those ladies and they will bend over backwards to help

I grew up watching the Indy cars from 1958-77 come east (Trenton/Langhorne...then Pocono and Nazerath) Finally got to do it 2001, 2003 and 2008. Ya gotta do it at least once. For me it's always been best to have a radio as well. You might not remember the race....but you'll never forget the crowd...the sea of humanity and a enough crushed beer cans to build a Boeing 707.
@theophilhist6455. I’ve seen videos of Langhorne. Mostly dirt track videos. Trenton , I believe I saw on tv . That looked like an awesome track👍 Saw Nazerath on tv as well but just remembered it was flat and had a crazy dogleg. Wish something could be done to get a race back at Pocono. You’re right, it’s amazing to see so many people, everywhere! There’s an energy that washes over the crowd. Nothing else like it 😀 We’ve contributed to aluminum recycling program at the track 😂 I read a stat about how many gallons of beer is consumed race day. It’s insane! Thanks for watching and sharing your experience with us. Hope you have a great race day👍✌️🏁
@@thissecondhalfadventure Glad you responded... two more other anecdotes... I grew up 2 miles from Trenton Speedway and saw my first race there in 1958..... we use to be able to go in the pits and talk with the drivers like they were our friends ...seriously from chatting with Mario when he was a no-body....to holding Jim Hurtibise's beer can ( yup alcohol in the pits) when he autographed my shirt ( that's long gone)... remember talking with Jud Larson (did you know he was quite a piano player?)...my wife's dad used to manage a near by motel and my wife of 52 years served breakfast to AJ Foyt... Jim Mc Elreath Lloyd Ruby and Johnny Rutherford the "Texans" more times than she can can remember... they were so down to earth back then..... They use to work on the cars in the motel parking lot.... open trailers and a tonneau over the cockpit.....those were incredible days... Did you know MeElreath was a WW2 fighter pilot who flew P-38s and B-17s? ... those were some men... Great days never to be repeated...You can tell I could go on and on...Any way the "Greatest Spectacle of Racing" will be listened to me for the 61st time on radio... the old Tony Hulman...Sid Collins... Jim Nabors... "Back Home in Indiana" is one of my favorite songs
@@theophilhist6455 This is what old race fans do😀👍 My dad took us to Terre Haute, Eldora, New Bremen etc. in the Midwest. Saw all those drivers there and next thing you know they’re driving a roadster at Indy or Trenton! A great era. Those are great memories! Can’t imagine what a Jersey kid thought of those Texas accents back then . I never knew those facts about McElreath and Larson My dad thought the world of Jud Larson. Dad helped Paul Leffler on Jud’s USAC sprint car. He was very upset about the deaths of Red Reigle and Jud Larson at Reading, PA. When we were kids we didn’t go to the race. The family took a picnic basket to a park on the SE side of Indy. We’d listen to Sid Collin’s and crew cover the race! Still the best! Yes, I’m going on as well😂 Hope you enjoy the race!
@@thissecondhalfadventure Jud Larson was one of the greats who did the most with any machine. He was a "dirt master". Well we can agree that we could go on and on. It was fun to follow the careers from the 1/2 mile bull rings to the brickyard. After I got out of the Navy in '71 I went to Reading a lot until 1976 when the famous battles were those of the Larry Dixon and Gary Bettenhausen days... and the likes of Rollie Beale -Sam Sessions and Poncho Carter...still dangerous...but the memory I have seeing an uncaged sprint cars back in the day was even scary to watch (pre-1970)...deadly serious. I saw a lot of URC sprint car races in the '60s. Anyway....you'll agree, in USAC, the cast of characters of those drivers was so colorful...they were "blue collar" guys...down to earth...vets, truck drivers and machinist like I was. So my friend, as for Indy this year... I'm thinking Dixon is going to show up...he's been quiet...deep in the pack and probably one of the smartest drivers ever (Like a Foyt / Rutherford / Unser type)... "Knows how to hold 'em"... "Knows when to show 'em...when the day is done" . Enjoy!
@@theophilhist6455 First of all, thanks for your service! The National Speed Sport News was better than the Sunday paper! It gave a kid an imagination of Wall Speedway , Stafford Springs , Oswego etc. Growing up in Indiana, I believed USAC was the benchmark! Dirt track today and a high banked asphalt track like Dayton, Winchester or Salem. tomorrow. Held my breath for most of the 30 laps . Speaking of the URC, I sadly remember Carl Berkvist (sp?) crashing at Eldora in a USAC race. The “Larry and Gary Show” was special at that time! So back to the present. Dixon can’t be counted out. Love to see him win again! Sentimental choice is Ferrucci for Foyt. Maybe an Ed Carpenter car! Pato/McClaren would be good for the series. Enjoy the banter!! 😀👍✌🏁
First timer this year, great tips in the video! One question that I’ve never seen anyone address: Does cell service work during race day or should I plan to be without it for a while?
Disclaimer: I can't speak for every race fan's experience with their cell phone. As a 30 year plus veteran and an IT project manager, I have often attempted to use my cell phone to message people outside of the track (text and Facebook messaging). Both the cell and data service struggle with that many people. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway (through their partner Verizon) added several booster towers to the facility to assist with both services. This happened a couple of years ago. Did it improve both services? Yes. Did it fully overcome all user's issues? No. It's hard to get bandwidth for 300k users when they are packed into a single place. Typically I find little/no trouble about 30 mins before and 15 mins after the race. Data Usage and text messaging are a problem during the race for me. Attempting to place a voice call? Please don't attempt this. First, even if it went through, you aren't likely to hear each other due to the noise of the car's engines. As previously stated, others may have a different experience based on where they are sitting around the track. Just to be safe, expect your phone not to work during the race itself. Have a blast and welcome to race day!
I have experienced 30+ 500s and this is decent advice for someone new. We drive up from Texas and I will say, while we always stay until the checkered flag, exiting quickly is huge for us to get to our mid-point hotel stop on our way home. We sit in the NW Vista and we patiently file out of the stands to make our way back to the car quickly. We park in a front yard north of the Coke lot to be able to leave as quickly as possible. The Coke lot will be held from exiting for some time after the race to allow for pedestrian traffic to slow down. I'm always careful about what I bring into the stands as in, I don't want anything very large and I'm mindful that whatever I bring, it's likely to get stepped on. If you're shopping for souvenirs, expect a long checkout line and get it done early otherwise the things you want might be sold out. The chair back rental, or your own chair back, are nice to have. We also avoid 465 coming in and use a series of surface streets to avoid the parking lot 465 can become. It can't be stressed enough, prepare for the weather and hydrate well.
I was born and raised in Indianapolis. If you’re not from Speedway, IN, it can be extremely overwhelming. Think about going to and leaving a sold out NFL. Then multiply the number of people by about 5-6. It’s a lot of people, and a lot of gates that can be hard to keep track of.
@jshumphress. So true!! Fans should know what side of the track they’re coming from and know where their gate is ,but it’s easy just following the mob in. It can be confusing! We park on the same side of the track every year to save us from getting lost😂 Yep, newcomers may be surprised by the crowds. Thanks for watching and commenting! Have a great race!
@wpbarchitect1800. We’re partial to turn four (NE vista). We see cars exit two , the backstretch, enter three and exit four. Probably similar to seats in turn one. If I could correct one thing, "Back Home Again in Indiana" is not the official state song of Indiana. For the longest time, I thought it was the state song as well. It's just a song about Indiana that became popular to be sung during the race every year, so it became tradition to be song every year during the Indianapolis 500. Great tips in the video!

We’re getting a little older and wonder how much longer we can get it done.
Just glad you enjoyed the experience!

Hearing Taps reverberate through the stands was truly chilling. Best reverb I’ve ever heard.

@richardmourdock2719. Thank you!
I hear ya Richard! Between “Back Home” and “Taps” I’m kind of a proud mess. I could go on for hours 😂
20 plus years is a great run. We wish you many more. We’ve heard the same thing about the space shuttle launches. Man I’m sure that would have been amazing.
Loved your comments. Have a great race!!
Shuttle launch was one of the most amazing things I have ever witnessed. I still need to go to the 500.
Good luck with that one about not crying during Back Home Again in Indiana as that is a lost cause for me along with the National Anthem and TAPS!

Always have some cash for anything purchased outside the track

I never knew those facts about McElreath and Larson
My dad thought the world of Jud Larson.
Yes, I’m going on as well😂
Hope you enjoy the race!
One question that I’ve never seen anyone address:
Does cell service work during race day or should I plan to be without it for a while?
We've heard conflicting reports but have contacted IMS and will get back to you on it. Thanks so much for the kind words, viewing and commenting! 😊
@kevindearing4704. Those are all sound tips! Thanks for joining the conversation. Have a great race🏁
