Ireland Day2 - Dublin to Kilkenny
Join us on Day 2 of our most recent Irish road trip, as we drive from Dublin to Kilkenny! We’ll stop at Powerscourt Waterfall (Ireland’s tallest!), visit Victor’s Way (the Irish-Indian Sculpture park), find ourselves in the midst of a famous Irish sports car road rally (the Cannonball Run!) and end up in the medieval Irish town of Kilkenny. We’ll seek out a pub, dinner, and wander into a viewing of a “friendly” Irish/England football match.
Stick around to the end, when we’ll issue a sincere apology to the Irish for butchering pronunciation (yet again!) of the place name of a lovely town in our last video.
For more info, see the links below!

    We have a choice of Well, Medium or Rare in our restaurants in Ireland for steaks. (Also medium-rare and medium-well of course) But we don’t have that choice with burgers, as the beef is minced and it is considered a risk to eat undercooked. We do have the choice with steaks or whole joints of Beef or Lamb. That may be helpful to know on your next visit 😊

    • @thissecondhalfadventure
      @thissecondhalfadventure 2 дні тому

      @phelan7437 Thank you for that clarification! We find that very interesting. I don’t think it’s a matter of right or wrong but in the US we don’t blink an eye if someone orders a medium rare burger. I think we’re more concerned with the internal temperature being sufficient. 😀 Great to know about steaks and roasted options. Thanks for watching and sharing that info.

    Thanks, you two, for an informative and "cozy" presentation. I spent 40 days (and nights) in Ireland from last Sept. thru Dec., over three trips, each 10-15 days. On the third trip, I began looking for property to buy (the cottage I wanted went from 180,000 Euros to a quarter mil [!] in just two weeks!), so I began seeking rentals - again, beyond my budget. Still, my Brazilian boyfriend (a nurse, so...) and I have begun applying for a job for him there, hoping that "residency will follow a secure roof" but it's VERY tough. I happened to be there, on the 3rd trip, during national elections: EVERY of the dozen-to-20 parties talked about the housing shortage, so everyone agrees it's a massive, debilitating problem - a crisis, even - but not all political stripes agree on a solution. All I know is, seriously: We'll likely find affordable housing solely through Divine Intervention - and I kid not: I'm letting go of this and letting Powers bigger than he and me work The Magic. Please send us good vibes! Oh, and more thing: I'm utterly gay and love my boyfriend endlessly, but Karen I want to tell you, it's a joy to watch you: Coming from Iowa, I find your Indiana accent [some of my ancestors lived in IN] comforting, but also your lovely smile lights up the screen! I thank you, for letting your Natural Beauty shine forth, unencumbered with tons of base and other overkill makeup. You are beautiful and it shows - without any exaggerated "paint" on top. Keep up the good work - and the lovely smile! Thanks!

      @michaelluick-thrams977 thank you so much for your kind words! We will certainly send good vibes out into the universe for the two of you hoping you'll find a good housing solution. We love Ireland and housing is sadly a huge problem for them. Chris knows how much I stress over hair, makeup, wardrobe, etc., for our shoots - the camera is not kind once you're a woman over a certain decade! Your compliments made my week! 😘❤️

    That was fun to watch guys. I'm Irish but the sculpture park is a new one on me. Looks interesting. The motorways in Ireland are largely arranged like the spokes of a wheel, emanating from the hub of Dublin. This means that travelling across country (east to west) is mostly on by-roads which can be a challenge for tourists. But then again you wouldn't get to see interesting places like that sculpture park. I love hearing from you both. ❤. Looking forward to the next instalment.

    • @thissecondhalfadventure

      @billyo54 Hello and Happy New Year to you! Thanks for your comment. We try to make our videos fun 😀 We loved the motorways for easy city to city travel, but the rural and local roads were a blast to drive. Like you say, there’s so many interesting things to see if you get off of the main roadways. Driving was so much easier this time around. The smaller car and the experience of driving in Ireland previously really made it enjoyable. Victor’s Way is an interesting place. Very calming, peaceful walk with some amazing sculptures. The boards with the written descriptions were very helpful. As always, thanks for watching. We’ll be heading down to your neck of the woods in the next two videos.

      @20duncan05 Thanks for watching! On our first trip to Ireland we used a local agent. They moved away from here and I heard they’re focused more on group travel tourism. We knew that they were working through CIE Tours that focuses more on Ireland travel and Great Britain travel. On our second trip this past September we worked entirely with CIE . They offer a variety of tours for families, large groups, small groups etc. Sadly, we get no compensation from CIE. ☹ I know there are agents in Indy and South Bend that specialize in Irish travel but we don’t have any experience with any of them. Phil Lynott lived on the Howth Penisula and drank there occasionaly. Originaly raised in Crumlin on the south side. Phil was so proud of being Irish. No matter where he went in the world if he was talking to a journalist and they got something wrong about Ireland, he'd give the guy a history lesson. It meant a lot to him. His mother Philomena lived in Howth until she passed and would go to his graveside in Howth on a daily basis, and often spoke to his fans,

    If you’re going to do a video about Howth, please first learn how to pronounce it correctly. It rhymes with “both”. Also, McDaids in on Harry Street across from Bruxelles pub, just off Grafton Street. That is not part of what you called the “Temple Bar area”. Temple Bar is between Dame Street and the River Liffey. And in the evening time no self-respecting Irish person would drink there. It’s a rip-off price-wise, and is full of tourists and English stag and hen parties. That’s why you met Irish people in McDaids. As it is nowhere near Temple Bar. All that said, I’m glad you both enjoyed your trip to Dublin.

    • @thissecondhalfadventure
      @thissecondhalfadventure Місяць тому

      @gavindoyle692 You’re right, we dropped the ball on that pronunciation of Howth. Sad truth, we knew how to pronounce Howth but when we recorded we slipped. I’m just happy I didn’t say “ I er land “. We were aware of Temple Bar reputation but decided to walk through there on a Friday night to see what it was like for ourselves on the way back to our hotel. We saw all the groups you mentioned 😀. Didn’t buy any drinks but talked to a man who was trying to keep groups of “hen parties “ in order. He said “ I don’t get paid enough for this “ McDaids was perfect for us! Thanks for watching and commenting! Hope you keep watching.

    the books removed from the Long Room at Trinity College Dublin's Old Library will be put back on the shelves after the conservation project is complete. The books are being relocated to a climate-controlled storage facility while the building undergoes restoration and upgrades. So when the building is restored and climate controlled within the library itself, all the books will be returned after their preservation work.

    Nice video, though mispronounced Howth. It's more like 'Toad' with a H. and a th at the end 😂 Yes, odd i know! Yes, you can see the country Wales on occasion. Im.a tour guide that takes groups to Howth and we could see the mountains of Snowdonia over in Wales on the horizon last year. It's only 80 miles away so depending on weather conditions it's visible every now and again. McDaids is great, though not in Temple Bar. Its on Harry St, off Grafton St, our major pedestrianised shopping street on the southside. Glad you enjoyed! 🙌🏻

    Although traditionally the harp in Trinity College has always been referred to as Brian Ború’s harp, Carbon 14 dating and dendrochronology has shown that it’s not that old. Brian Ború died in 1014 (at the Balttle of Clontarf) but the harp only dates from the late 14th/ early 15th century so not that old. Howth is pronounced ‘hoh-th’ (like both). It derives from the Old Norse name ‘Hoved’ meaning ‘headland’. This is where my family is from. But you didn’t see Howth Castle or the Neolithic portal tomb (3,800bc). Also the area around the Baily Lighthouse, right up to the cliff path, is part of an Iron Age promontory fort. You’ll have to come back!
