Hornish was the undisputed king of the winning pass at the start/finish line in the IRL days. this race was one of first times that a legit IRL racer won this thing after the CART teams came back to Indy. Really was a clash of styles. Ift the ABA gave the NBA the 3 point line. The IRL gave indycar the last lap pass at indy. It was wild to watch.
I was there with my kids in turn two in spectators mounds and it was one of the most electrifying finishes in the Indy 500 that I have ever witnessed and I have been going to the 500 for 30 years...my kids are born Hoosiers...🏎️🏎️🏎️
It's such a shame Sam Hornish Jr left so early to NASCAR. One of the best oval drivers of all time. Perhaps Newgarden is the only driver nowadays to perform like him on ovals
Unfortunately, MOST unfortunately, this race scarred young Marco Andretti & IMO somewhat derailed what should have been a driving career equalling his famous Father's, Marco was simply never the same behind the wheel after this bitter-bitter defeat. If memory serves, i believe this was Michael's race to lose, until he was involved in a pit road mishap that damaged his front wing & caused his car to push like a dump truck at the end, must have been absolutely gutwrenching for poor Mario watching the end of this one 😖
@@TailsFan369no2 Yes he is & that certainly make's this old fan of his entire family very happy 👍 Marco seems to be having a great time racing in Smoke's SRX series, I hope it continues for as long as he want's it too 🤞
When will modern day announcers learn yelling and speaking so fast the audience can’t follow is a distraction on TV. The excitement is in front of us … on the track, not in the booth… just IMO
I highly doubt that. Hornish’s car was a rocket. Backed off and fell behind with 1 1/2 laps to go, then was able to catch up and take the chequered flag.
Hornish car was the class of the field by 1-2 MPH. only thing that make it close was the mistakes that Hornish kept making. Marco was great that day, I'd say 5 out of 10 times.
@@alexshank1414 Hornish only caught him because Andretti backed out of the throttle slightly in turn 4. If Marco had driven lap 200 like he did lap 199, he would be an Indianapolis 500 champion.
Sam Hornish Jr. was an absolute beast on ovals during this time.
Yes and my favorite was Rick 🤔 err Mears of course
@@deantait8326 Rick Mears was just a beast in general

Marco passing Michael is an all time moment
What a finish that was to a crazy race❤❤
Yes I was in turn one and went nuts when he passed Marco
Number 9?? I've attended the last 30 500's and this is easily in the top 3

My favorite Indy 500 of all-time
Hornish wasn't the most succesful driver but he was the most unique. Those last lap passes were his own signature move.
In nascar he was a struggler, but in IndyCar he was a 3 time champ
Hopefully NBC puts these in a playlist
My friend was at the 2006 race and said after the penalty Sam’s next 25 laps looked lake a balls to the wall qualifying run.

He’s doing well in SRX

Amazing ❤
Sam hornish sr was a a legend this guy is okay
Love to see it!
I’ve got Sam’s automatic back when Indy ran at Richmond!! Got a bunch of now retired drivers.
Sam hasn’t completely hung his helmet, apparently
@@TailsFan369no2 good to hear .

The Andretti Curse.... smh
All of these yet no mentuon of Jim Clarks domination of the field when he won. The Americans just cant handle when its not a regular winning it 😂
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
2006 was the year that I decided if I were ever to smoke, my choice would be Marlboros!
Damm. Sam destroyed Michael & Marco....
Tha Andretti curse happens again.

It was dark times for open wheel then. We flippin had Rusty Wallace doing the announcing. He was like, THIS IS THE BEST "DAYTONA 500" EVER!!
well that was the radio call not the Tv call
Oh shut up, they are letting emotions flow. I don't want a robot calling this, or any race. Watch it on mute if it's such a problem.
Larson wins next year
there's a 1/33 chance though.
First!
Amazing race but I think if you run it the same Marco wins 9 out of 10 times

@@alexshank1414 I should have been more clear hornish wrecks 9 of 10 times with that inside move like with takumo Sato and Dario
But I do agree hornish had a very fast car

Why did you leave Indy Car Sam you could have Won the minimum of 5 Indy 500
I still want him to win Daytona
no ones gonna talk about how andretti blocked and almost caused what would have been near death crash by blocking................. alright then
