Nice neat job 👍 The Zuma is by far the best and quietest PS I’ve used, good call. Currently have mine mounted under the board with the Zuma brackets, to make room for more pedals on top when needed.

Awesome video! Just built my first proper board for about 2500CAD. Got a steel string supreme and you guys killed it. Yes it does the mayer thing but it also just has wicked tones in it.

I switched to Strymon Zuma Power Supply from a Truetone CS6. I needed more ports because I have lots of pedals. Just my luck FED EX Lost my first one so I'll get another one from Sweetwater!!!! This board is going on 8 weeks to build...Uggggh!!!! Shortages of pedals to lost orders. Keep making videos Mason! I watch them all!
Clocked based effects like delays in the effects loops can cause ticking noise issues because the logic ground and the chassis ground of the switching power supply aren't suppose to be tied connected together. If you look at the manuals on switching power supplies it will say not to connect or LOOPING the field ground/chassis ground with the logic ground. The amplifiers effects loops send jack and return jack grounds are at a different ground potential than the delays DC jack ground and the switching power supply ground. What I'm saying is that all 3 jacks ground are not at zero volts. The manuals for various switching power supplies will say LOOPING the field ground/chassis ground with the logic ground will cause interference issues. LOOPING is tie/connecting the audio grounds, analog grounds, digital logic grounds to the chassis earth ground. Often you have to open up the clock based guitar pedal and FLOAT the digital logic ground from the DC jack to prevent it leaking the clock and digital noises from bleeding leaking into the chassis ground. I just don't understand these EE designers that make clock based digital effects because their "grounding Schemes" are all over the places and will not work good with certain switching power supplies and various amplifiers effects loops.
This is partially true, but still has a lot of holes in it. You're basing this on an incomplete understanding of grounding and noise, especially as it relates to pedals and DC. You're also taking switching supplies and applying that to digital clock noise. These are not the same. Switching supplies are generating the 9V for your pedals, the digital clock noise is internal to the pedal. Properly designed devices with switching supplies and digital clocking can work perfectly with no noise problems. A common way this is done is having a ground connection between analog and digital at some point. Proper ground PCB widths, locations compared to sensitive circuitry (capacitive coupling of hi-frequency noise), hi frequency filtering locations to ground, and termination are critical to keep the noise out. Also in terms of your points, (1) when you write “zero volts”, that is really DC and does not apply here. The grounds are never at the same potential at the circuit end ground as there is inductance in the ground that is really a resistance to high frequencies back to the common ground point, so noise voltage is dropped across this ground. (2) When you talk about "looping," this is for AC powered devices only, and what this really means is not adding another ground between signal (field) and earth as it creates a ground loop that will pick up switching noise. This does not apply to pedals, the switching supply is supplying the 9V, they are not internal on the digital devices. Also there are many legal requirements for power supply switching noise to not pollute the AC power line. (3) In terms of "floating" the digital logic ground, I'm not sure what you're saying here. I would not think you can disconnect a ground connection internally and the device keep working properly or have even a worse clicking problem. (4) with respect to having an EE degree, at best, most of us - including me - are at a service technician level by "real" engineering standards. Most real electrical engineers aren't working in the guitar pedal/amp/accessories field. This includes all of the iconic and idolized guitar pedal makers overwhelmingly.

For guitar pedals that use AC power supplies. example like my digitech Jimi Hendrix experience modeling pedal uses an AC to AC wallwart power supply, its not AC to DC its AC to AC. All AC power supply guitar pedals should use an "isolation transformers" to prevent ground looping from the field ground to the earth ground. Guitar Amplifiers will cause "ghosting notes" from the AC 60hz bleeding leaking into the B+ Negative Bias voltage or high voltage rails. The same problem will happen with AC guitar pedals that use AC voltages because the 60hz will leak into the clock ground and audio ground causing noises and problems. 2.) The Reference should be earth ground which is "zero volts". The Switching power supply should be the reference on the primary side earth ground plugged into the AC wall outlet should be zero voltage. The guitar pedal board has all the guitar pedals plugged into the switch power supply DC jacks but the ground on the DC jacks is "Not zero volts reference back to earth ground" as well as the guitar amplifiers input jack ground reference back to earth ground as well as the guitar amplifiers effects loop jacks ground reference to earth ground aren't zero volts. The "Noise Voltage" is the main issue is measuring the Noise Voltage from the power supply DC jack ground to the guitar amplifiers input jack ground to the guitar amplifiers effects loop jack ground, which will have a different Noise Voltage Peak to peak voltage for just Noise, hum, interference, etc. Since you have a potential difference for all the grounds from the switching power supply DC Jacks ground, guitar amplifiers input ground, guitar amplifiers effects loop ground, and guitar pedals DC jack ground, which all aren't at "zero volts" you will have a Noise voltage reference back to earth ground. All guitar pedal designers for all different brands internally inside the guitar pedals audio ground, digital ground, clock ground, analog ground will NOT be all tied together at earth ground zero volts. It depends on the circuit design and who is designing the circuit boards but this is why you will get noise voltages, bad audio signal to noise ratio, clock tickling noises, etc. When using Clock based guitar effects in the amplifiers effects loop will cause the clock noises and clock clicking ticking noises to be louder is because the guitar pedals digital ground and clock ground are at a different potential than the guitar amplifiers input jack ground and guitar amplifiers jacks effects loop ground will be worse having a larger noise voltage. The guitar amplifiers effects loop jack ground is always at a different potential than the guitar amplifiers input jack. You can use an isolation transformers but his is just adding a band aid to the root cause problem. 3.) Since most guitar pedal designers and pedalboard Designers aren't EE engineers this is why all the grounds aren't at the same potential causing Noise Voltages on the audio ground, digital ground, clock ground, guitar amplifiers input jack ground, guitar amplifiers effects look jack ground, guitar pedals DC jack ground, etc. You have to take it to a specialized EE engineers that specializes in grounding Schemes. The new paul reed smith jimi Hendrix amplifiers is based on the marshall plexi but the Engineer added a new grounding scheme to cut down on the Signal To noise Ratio because the grounding scheme of the marshall plexi had all the grounds at different points causing very bad signal to noise ratio issues. Its all about the ground scheme. If you measure a "millivolt drop" from any ground to earth ground you have leakage current and Noise voltage, this is bad not good.

Check our our effects loops videos and signal path videos - it might shed light on the "why" part. 1) Typically you want pedals that can take line level - this is not one of those pedals typically. 2) Historically analog chorus wasn't use after the preamp, most of the iconic chorus sounds we know of were all in front of the amp effects, and depending on the design of the chorus will be betters suited level wise and impedance wise to be in series in front of the preamp, especially this pedal, the Arion SCH-1.
i found the Ai1 ( buffer in a jack ) and book marked it, need be .... pretty neat, but i don't run any time based effects at all, and i have an NS-1X i even like my synths dry most of the time. ( the staples on drums, having more to do with texture and sustain ) i mean i will run a delay on a synth, on occasion, or a studio verb in a buss. but my guitar? no thank you...that's studio post, idk, i do think about it for some stuff...but it's just a pain. my guitar is passive, but if i need a cable longer than 10' i will get a wireless ... but it's still nice to know of a consolidated solution like that, just in case....i haven't started on the bass rig yet.
@@VertexEffectsInc you should maybe talk to the lap steel player of Larkin Poe, she has a very unique sound that’s easy to identify; she may not have the largest pedal board, but it seems big enough that you could beautify it for her.
I’m really open to anything, Jazz, melodic death metal, prog, classic, pop, you name it, but country meh… Lindsey Ell is probably the first country/pop artist in my whole life that has made me come from under the rock a lot of guitarist grow under to appreciate something new :)

Im just in love with the videos, the pedals, have an ultra phonix doing all my drives sounds, but i find a little anoying refering yourself as the "A.K.A the rig doctor", A.K.A ussually its used when someone else is presenting you, not yourself hahaha

As shown in the video and in the diagrams of the DIY interface/buffer it can be used in mono (2 cable method), or with an effects loop (4 cable method). The video shows diagrams of this as well as the diagrams in the links in the description.
i guess i think about effects as cluttering my mix, more than not ... i mean i do use effects in the studio, because otherwise there would be no ambiance at all. but live?....that's a space .... whatever it is. but signal processing, yeah...that's what my board is, and that's all it needs to be for me. i mean everyone thinks like that to some degree, and that's your wet dry blend........i just like it on zero, and that it reduces the clutter is the bonus there.
Hi Mason, great video as always, have a question?? I’m using a Boss ES8 Loaded with pedals on al the loops but delay and reverb are separated into the amp loop, Boss ES8 already have dual buffers, I want to build an interface like the one you just show, but do I needed with all the buffers??
The ES-8 Does have buffers for input and output - however they're the standard Boss variety - not high quality, more middle of the road, and not particularly great line drivers or do well with a lot of capacitance seen on their output. If you want the most neutral sound, I'd recommend looking at our recommended buffers in the description or go the DIY route like we did with Lindsay.

I could be wrong, but it looks like they built on a flat board, which doesn’t give much room underneath to run anything. I had to do this on a couple of my personal boards because they were completely flat too. For me, it just fit better in a road case then a slanted board did
There can be problems with the power supply under the board if it's a linear power supply versus a switch mode. Most people don't understand this and think that their pedalboard manufacturer has sorted this for them, when in fact, the pedalboard company has no idea about magnetic leakage for EMF and how a linear power supply under your pedals can be a real noise issue. We have several videos on this including a power supply buyer's guide which spells a lot of this out.
Andres - Pelican, SKB, and Gator all make great cases that we designed our boards to fit. I don't have plans to make a case, the reason being - I can't make the quality of cases that Gator, SKB, or Pelican can make for the price they can make it. I'm not a case manufacturer. Companies that do this (make cases with their pedalboard), are typically poorly made, not reliable, and often can't last a tour. I'm not arrogant enough to presume I can out-case the "Case Guys".

You must be new here - we have video tutorials showing you how to make the exact same cables that we sell, same materials, all the same vendors, part numbers, etc. This allows any viewer to replicate exactly what I’m doing for a fraction of the price. If they don’t want to make the cables themselves, we have an option for that too and offer a lifetime warranty on the cables. I’m not sure how to be any more transparent or democratic about it. Jimi Hendrix used fairly long, coiled cables that certainly introduced significant capacitance and warmed up his tone considerably. This was likely desirable when you consider how bright a single-coil pickup into a cranked Marshall amp can be.
The amp in the demo was, but that was our amp, not hers. She uses a channel switching Dumble style amp so the effects loop is valuable when you have amp gain.

I’m really sorry to say but what is so special about this board build? Don’t get me wrong it’s nicely organised and looks quite neat but that’s it. In a live setting i also think the second pedal row is not accessible enough. There’s nothing smart about this board in the way that you have a new switching or powering solution. You do not use any space underneath. What you see is what you get. That’s not a bad things so don’t get me wrong but personally I just don’t understand the need for a professional here. It’s not monstrous midi rig that’s so complicated that you need a science degree, it’s just a few pedals lined up nicely. I’m not a professional in any means but I still build my own pedalboards every once in a while and personally I would have the ambition to figure out a way to make this more than just a row of pedals. Maybe I would try to figure out how to make it more space efficient, how to make it more gigable by adding an easy programmable Switcher or something like that. Again this probably gonna be rock solid and will survive any gig, but I don’t think that’s enough for a professional build. Not trying to throw shade, just trying give some food for thought.
Second pedal row is on a riser, so it sits 1" higher than the first row, pretty sure this is discussed in the video. Typically I don't recommend for a pro level rig to go under the board for power, it complicates trouble shooting and is no the standard among pro rig builders from Robert Bradshaw, to Dave Friedman, etc., it's not unique to me. You can get a Pedaltrain and DIY if you'd like to do that - and that's fine, but that's not the assembly standard. You don't see the need, but perhaps Lindsay, among touring 200 dates a year, doesn't see the value in doing it herself. It's like you're criticizing the video about something that it's not - a rig built for you.

Great video Mason, thanks for sharing. I'm really impressed with those Ceriatone klones, I got one try as a boost at the end of my chain and it sounds that good that it is now just always on, I have to push the output knob with my foot to turn the boost up when required

Dual Lock is great. I moved to Power Grip - which we have a signature version on www.therigdr.com. I prefer it because 1) it's better in heat in humidity and doesn't lift off the board, and 2) it is stronger that SJ3550 or SJ3551 using less of it, which ends up being less expensive, cheaper to the customer, and it's overall better adhesive.

I think it’s me trying to be thrifty with the DualLok Something that allows me “to use less” is GREAT. I need to build one of your interface boxes sans buffers. I already have quality buffers. I took your advice from the video you did…has it been 6 years ago? Maybe you should start making colored pedals? I’m too old for pink but purple!
Why did she get rid of the Wah pedal? And also, why did you put the power supply on top? You could have hidden it on the bottom to add more room for another pedal.
Wah was never part of the rig or part of our conversations - perhaps it's more of a fringe application for her and can easily be placed next to the board as a wah is almost always first in the chain following the guitar. Just a guess. As for the power supply, generally, if you're using most linear isolated power supplies, the supply under the board isn't a good idea as you're putting your pedals in the magnetic field of the transformer and the leakage on most of the is pretty bad, especially with a lot of high current pedals where you're getting close to the current max total of the supply. Most of these higher current linear supplies don't have any shielding by way of the case because they use aluminum to keep the weight down and to use the chassis as a heatsink. This isn't ideal. Now with switch mode supplies, it's not so much of an issue but not all brands of power supply do switch mode yet. Furthermore, the Pedaltrain or similar style boards with the power supply underneath is nice for those that want a modular board and are hobbyist level players that like to experiment. However, for a more sedentary professional rig, it's more road worth and easier to trouble shoot when everything is top mounted. This is primarily why you seen most pro rig builders using this style flat board surface to make it all visible and easy to isolate cables or problematic areas which are inherent in touring.

Since most guitar pedal designers and pedalboard Designers aren't EE engineers this is why all the grounds aren't at the same potential causing Noise Voltages on the audio ground, digital ground, clock ground, guitar amplifiers input jack ground, guitar amplifiers effects look jack ground, guitar pedals DC jack ground, etc. You have to take it to a specialized EE engineers that specializes in grounding Schemes. The new paul reed smith jimi Hendrix amplifiers is based on the marshall plexi but the Engineer added a new grounding scheme to cut down on the Signal To noise Ratio because the grounding scheme of the marshall plexi had all the grounds at different points causing very bad signal to noise ratio issues. Its all about the ground scheme. If you measure a "millivolt drop" from any ground to earth ground you have leakage current and Noise voltage, this is bad not good.

May I ask why the chorus pedal isn't in the effects loop?
Check our our effects loops videos and signal path videos - it might shed light on the "why" part. 1) Typically you want pedals that can take line level - this is not one of those pedals typically. 2) Historically analog chorus wasn't use after the preamp, most of the iconic chorus sounds we know of were all in front of the amp effects, and depending on the design of the chorus will be betters suited level wise and impedance wise to be in series in front of the preamp, especially this pedal, the Arion SCH-1.
i found the Ai1 ( buffer in a jack ) and book marked it, need be .... pretty neat, but i don't run any time based effects at all, and i have an NS-1X
i even like my synths dry most of the time. ( the staples on drums, having more to do with texture and sustain )
i mean i will run a delay on a synth, on occasion, or a studio verb in a buss. but my guitar? no thank you...that's studio post, idk, i do think about it for some stuff...but it's just a pain.
my guitar is passive, but if i need a cable longer than 10' i will get a wireless ... but it's still nice to know of a consolidated solution like that, just in case....i haven't started on the bass rig yet.

As shown in the video and in the diagrams of the DIY interface/buffer it can be used in mono (2 cable method), or with an effects loop (4 cable method). The video shows diagrams of this as well as the diagrams in the links in the description.

What are the dimensions of the board?
I think it was 24" x 12" or so...don't recall as we did it custom before we had our production pedalboards.
i guess i think about effects as cluttering my mix, more than not ... i mean i do use effects in the studio, because otherwise there would be no ambiance at all.
but live?....that's a space .... whatever it is.
but signal processing, yeah...that's what my board is, and that's all it needs to be for me.
i mean everyone thinks like that to some degree, and that's your wet dry blend........i just like it on zero, and that it reduces the clutter is the bonus there.

Hi Mason, great video as always, have a question?? I’m using a Boss ES8 Loaded with pedals on al the loops but delay and reverb are separated into the amp loop, Boss ES8 already have dual buffers, I want to build an interface like the one you just show, but do I needed with all the buffers??
The ES-8 Does have buffers for input and output - however they're the standard Boss variety - not high quality, more middle of the road, and not particularly great line drivers or do well with a lot of capacitance seen on their output. If you want the most neutral sound, I'd recommend looking at our recommended buffers in the description or go the DIY route like we did with Lindsay.

I could be wrong, but it looks like they built on a flat board, which doesn’t give much room underneath to run anything. I had to do this on a couple of my personal boards because they were completely flat too.
For me, it just fit better in a road case then a slanted board did
There can be problems with the power supply under the board if it's a linear power supply versus a switch mode. Most people don't understand this and think that their pedalboard manufacturer has sorted this for them, when in fact, the pedalboard company has no idea about magnetic leakage for EMF and how a linear power supply under your pedals can be a real noise issue. We have several videos on this including a power supply buyer's guide which spells a lot of this out.
Finally Linsey get pro level build!!!! 😁.. one can only hope Tom Morello come to uncle mason and upgrade his 90s pedalboard 😁🤭

Andres - Pelican, SKB, and Gator all make great cases that we designed our boards to fit. I don't have plans to make a case, the reason being - I can't make the quality of cases that Gator, SKB, or Pelican can make for the price they can make it. I'm not a case manufacturer. Companies that do this (make cases with their pedalboard), are typically poorly made, not reliable, and often can't last a tour. I'm not arrogant enough to presume I can out-case the "Case Guys".

Jimi Hendrix used fairly long, coiled cables that certainly introduced significant capacitance and warmed up his tone considerably. This was likely desirable when you consider how bright a single-coil pickup into a cranked Marshall amp can be.
Any pedal "on" is a buffer.

The amp in the demo was, but that was our amp, not hers. She uses a channel switching Dumble style amp so the effects loop is valuable when you have amp gain.
Also remember the pedalboard can work with all pedals in series with a clean amp or 4 cable method for an effects loop.

I’m really sorry to say but what is so special about this board build? Don’t get me wrong it’s nicely organised and looks quite neat but that’s it. In a live setting i also think the second pedal row is not accessible enough. There’s nothing smart about this board in the way that you have a new switching or powering solution. You do not use any space underneath. What you see is what you get. That’s not a bad things so don’t get me wrong but personally I just don’t understand the need for a professional here. It’s not monstrous midi rig that’s so complicated that you need a science degree, it’s just a few pedals lined up nicely. I’m not a professional in any means but I still build my own pedalboards every once in a while and personally I would have the ambition to figure out a way to make this more than just a row of pedals. Maybe I would try to figure out how to make it more space efficient, how to make it more gigable by adding an easy programmable Switcher or something like that. Again this probably gonna be rock solid and will survive any gig, but I don’t think that’s enough for a professional build. Not trying to throw shade, just trying give some food for thought.
Second pedal row is on a riser, so it sits 1" higher than the first row, pretty sure this is discussed in the video. Typically I don't recommend for a pro level rig to go under the board for power, it complicates trouble shooting and is no the standard among pro rig builders from Robert Bradshaw, to Dave Friedman, etc., it's not unique to me. You can get a Pedaltrain and DIY if you'd like to do that - and that's fine, but that's not the assembly standard. You don't see the need, but perhaps Lindsay, among touring 200 dates a year, doesn't see the value in doing it herself. It's like you're criticizing the video about something that it's not - a rig built for you.

Dual Lock is great. I moved to Power Grip - which we have a signature version on www.therigdr.com. I prefer it because 1) it's better in heat in humidity and doesn't lift off the board, and 2) it is stronger that SJ3550 or SJ3551 using less of it, which ends up being less expensive, cheaper to the customer, and it's overall better adhesive.

Why did she get rid of the Wah pedal? And also, why did you put the power supply on top? You could have hidden it on the bottom to add more room for another pedal.
Wah was never part of the rig or part of our conversations - perhaps it's more of a fringe application for her and can easily be placed next to the board as a wah is almost always first in the chain following the guitar. Just a guess. As for the power supply, generally, if you're using most linear isolated power supplies, the supply under the board isn't a good idea as you're putting your pedals in the magnetic field of the transformer and the leakage on most of the is pretty bad, especially with a lot of high current pedals where you're getting close to the current max total of the supply. Most of these higher current linear supplies don't have any shielding by way of the case because they use aluminum to keep the weight down and to use the chassis as a heatsink. This isn't ideal. Now with switch mode supplies, it's not so much of an issue but not all brands of power supply do switch mode yet. Furthermore, the Pedaltrain or similar style boards with the power supply underneath is nice for those that want a modular board and are hobbyist level players that like to experiment. However, for a more sedentary professional rig, it's more road worth and easier to trouble shoot when everything is top mounted. This is primarily why you seen most pro rig builders using this style flat board surface to make it all visible and easy to isolate cables or problematic areas which are inherent in touring.
