I am a drummer of 46 years and lifelong dedicated. Steven is my favorite frontman and one of the most inspiring men in the world to me. What a blessing it must be to take the stage with him.
I had the privilege of being front row at a Steven Tyler solo show in 2017, and he sang directly to me, hugging me, so that my ear was between his mouth and his mic. I was BLOWN AWAY at how clear and perfect his voice sounded directly in my ear. He's legit, his voice is legit. He gets accused by "fans" of lip syncing now and then. I can hear that he does use backing tracks sometimes, but he's always singing with them. In my opinion, he doesn't need them, he just has them for added security. He's allowed to, he can do whatever he wants! I can't stress enough how real his voice is, though. He does not use auto tune, that's his real voice. He sang a verse of Jaded and a bridge of Livin' on the Edge to me (that concert was one of the best experiences of my life, just need to say!). I've seen Aerosmith live over 50 times and I'm a singer myself. That man IS a super athlete with his voice; his technique is amazing. Great video, thank you!
@@RodriRM_21 Totally agree! My only guess is that it seems these days he's shying away from the upper end of his chest voice. He sings low and he sings high, but he doesn't sing in the middle. It might not be comfortable for him anymore, so he has the backing track for the chorus of Dude. He's also a perfectionist so he might only have it because he wants to make extra sure the right notes are heard. It's like he can do it, but he's maybe not confident, sometimes his voice isn't reliable with those notes. No matter, I still love his voice and it still sounds fantastic.
@@lindsaypez1048 Exactly! The "middle" is what's not as prevalent as the old days..so true...omg reminds me of a joke back in a audio store I worked in.. "all highs and lows? must be Bose"..lol...Tyler is my fav singer first 5 albums Rock!
In 1987 backstage in Joe Louis arena, Dec 7 it was...me and some friends went backstage. I walked around singing 'Popcorn...yeah'...'do-do yeah'...'popcorn' and as Steven walked up it exploded into just that. He took us all for a ride that only he could do, and blew us all away. I got a DWM album signed in gold from that. As a joke I said 'ok, for me the shows over, thanks'...laughs all around. I think Don Dokken learned something that night too lol
@@lindsaypez1048 Yeah, Axl Rose also lost his mid-range voice gradually after 2010, and most of GnR songs are in that range unfortunately. When he performed with AC/DC, people were shocked to hear Axl sing pretty well, but it's mainly because AC/DC's songs are mostly in the high range.
Saw Aerosmith in mid 70s and they stunk up the place! Fans left in droves while they fought on stage. Seen them 3 times since. Some of the best shows I’ve seen! Gotta give it to him! He keeps on kickin’ ass!
Lol so ive been practicing the bel canto italian breathwork exercise for a number of years without knowing, but yes it does work, i naturally now hit lower and higher notes and have like half an octave lower bass ressonance to my voice.. im 23 with the 30 year old golden radio host voice, its dope XD

Great article. don't know why but i've been binging on all things Aerosmith this weekend: concerts, interviews etc, I discovered them age 17 in 1974 and their first two albums: AEROSMITH & Get Your Wings were listened two every day, where I played them over & over on my turntable. I dropped off once I had a kid & married. Watching fabulous concerts from the rare 70's footage of their earlier days on up to 2019 has been revelatory! Steven has only gotten better with age & wisdom. He's a scamp and has a serious case of LSD, lead singer disease but man, he has earned everything the world has given him and even the right to claim the male equivalent of DIVA. There are few people that have the energy & heart this man has. Long Live Aerosmith!!
@@McFlurry-OREO1 The correct spelling is Freddie. Freddie’s death elevated him in a way that might not have happened if he had lived. His voice wouldn’t have held out like Steven’s has done. His nodules and smoking were already impairing him before his sad illness caused him to have to do the remainder of his music in studio only.
This relatively unknown video has mystified the fuck out of me ever since I saw it when it first came out. To think that anyone could ever employ such a rarely understood and often never attempted form of singing, especially in the western, rock context with such success and accuracy is mind-blowing and I have no idea how he managed to come about learning that style. Even with all the information there is today it doesn't seem like there's any direct and clear areas where you can go to learn bel canto technique and that's infuriating because it's about one of the few things you could probably really benefit from as a singer, especially if you want a limitless range, but it's largely inaccessible.
The secret?...well, God created us all with small differences, so perfections or tiny imperfections in the vocal cords along with the size and shape of the sinuses, pallet, mouth, throat, and torso resonate in small differences from one person to the next. So, if you’re not naturally gifted, you can drastically improve your singing voice with tons of practice. although there are quite a few singers that can imitate other singers (which isn’t fair 😐 since I can barely carry a tune), there can only ever be 1 Steven Tyler, 1 MJ, 1 Steve Perry, 1 Aretha Franklin, so on....enjoyed the upload.
What you wrote here is what his vocal trainer said! When producers took Tyler to this trainer, he saw Tyler's vocal apparatus was a complete wound because his real voice is low and he overstrains himself to sing in high voice.
Great video, love the illustrations. But I don’t think you explained how he sings. He doesn’t sing the same way he talks in terms or vocal tension or just pitch. If you meant he breathes while singing, sure but everybody breathes while singing. The secret of his singing has a lot to be said.
The one time I think Tyler was at his worst was during Rock in a Hard Place. The drinking and drugs at that time really screwed him over quite badly. Listen to acrylic Me a River and you will see what I mean. His range is flat and his tone is really scratch and messed up. Thank God he got smart, cleaned up, and got his real voice back for Permanent Vacation and Pump.
Video missed the real secret. In Joe Perry's book he revealed that Tyler has a freakishly oversized voicebox/ larynx, giving him outstanding range. So did Freddie Mercury.
"To this day, his voice remains almost exactly as it was 4 decades ago which very few singers can achieve." Just an itsy-bitsy little exaggeration...... As well as Tyler's voice has held up, he does NOT sound like he did 20-25 years ago (nor could he expect to). His rasp is deeper now, and he has lost his upper-end some...at almost 72 (his bday is in two days)
His isolated vocals are not that great or spectacular. He's good. He's pitchy at times. But it adds character. Ken tamplin did a great isolated vocal video on him.
I am not a singer and not an expert, but I do know that you are as wrong as humanly possible about the key. Steven, while being absolutely amazing, has nothing to do with bel canto. Absolutely nada, nothing, period. There is no pushing of the voice in bel canto. Tyler does push and push and push. That defines it as completely impossible to be compatible with bel canto. So, sir, you are simply wrong. This has to be stated because there might be some confusion. Some kids might stumble across this video and say, Tyler is bel canto while he clearly isn't. Completely true about the legend and one of the greatest of all times though. I love love love love love his work!!!!
Steven Tyler is a legend to say the least.. wow, just wow
I heard him live once, was amazed that his voice sounds just as good live as it does on records.

A lot of tenor singers can go above C5. It's not uncommon. Most of those professional singers from the 70s could easily get close to Soprano C.
Thats true. Even I can go up constantly to a G5 and sometimes an A5 without any vocal lessons or any kind of education
