      I don’t 100% agree, that assumes that your perception of what is rude is correct. What I perceive as being rude and what others perceive as being rude is different. And that doesn’t take into account things like context the assumption to know what their their intentions behind it were. Just coz you feel they were being rude doesn’t mean they were or that was their intention. Might be a tender topic, or an overreaction on your part

    I have BPD and was diagnosed last year. I have an issue with taking things that should have a 0-10 level of reaction to 100.
    Filling my life with friends who genuinely care, and working on the issues I have through therapy and fulfilling hobbies has left me no time to argue with strangers on the internet. I still engage when I know someone has a bad take, but it’s not worth it to spend twenty minutes or more on it. 1990-born "nerd" here whose earliest memories contain dial-up modem sounds:
    The internet has *always* been a very toxic place. In some ways, it used to be worse due to one's ability to more reliably maintain anonymity. In other words, the root of toxicity online is precisely due to the fact that people can so easily disassociate themselves from how they would act irl vs. online. The only reason we notice this unhinged behavior more now is because there are more people online and that it has seeped into more and more facets of everyone's life.
    I learned very long ago that the only way to maintain my sanity was to only say and behave in ways online that I would say or do directly to the affected person's face.

  • @MrRubyElf
    @MrRubyElf 18 днів тому +11

    I'm honestly mixed on this one. Should influencers and celebrities be harassed? Absolutely not. No one should.
    I do think it's a bit naive to expect that it's never going to happen online, though. Because of that, I don't think that it's wrong to tell someone to steel themselves when they put stuff out on the internet. It's kinda like when you get a fire extinguisher for a kitchen. You obviously don't want a fire to start in the kitchen, but you're prepared if there ever is one.
    This belief cones from my experience. Personally, I've encountered a ton of bullying on the internet and IRL, and I've just grown to deal with it by just blocking people or not engaging them. Is it right that I get bullied? No. In a perfect world, there wouldn't be any kind of bullying. But I have tools at my disposal to deal with it.
    Edit: I do agree with a lot of comments here saying to unplug off of social media. Social media is probably one of the most unhelpful things that's ever been invented.

    CR has been getting tons of hate for these videos, calling her entitled and rude and that she should expect no less because she's famous. It's enraging. Imagine telling a woman that, while she's alone in public, she is recognized by a stranger and must agree to take part in conversation, be photographed, and touched against their will. She must "consent" to being stalked, and her family being stalked, because she covertly agreed to it by signing an employment contract. It's mind-boggling. She has no idea who you are, what your motives are, if you're carrying weapons, if you intend to harm her, etc. That so many WOMEN are calling her "weak" and "entitled" is horrifying. As for the last video, I agree with almost everything the influence said, but I do question what "woke intellectualism" is supposed to be. Really tired of people co-opting that word and using it to describe anything they don't like.

After watching the video, I feel as if it's maybe from watching too many gossip channels. It can be interesting to hear influencers talk about drama or celebrities. But like you said, at the end of the day, they are humans too. They have their own inner demons and conflicts. Who knows what the "truth" is or how they did what. It is none of our business. They deserve compassion and respect like everyone else. I think your video really brought to light the issues with social media in regards to fame. When I worked in telemarketing there were toxic people there too. I've done both outbound and inbound calls. I got a lot of polemic calls. They would try to stir me up for them to have any excuse or reason to insult, yell, and abuse me over the phone. It was consistent in both outbound and inbound calls. They may have had something going on in their lives. However trying to hurt a telemarketer isn't a healthy way to deal with their issues. Like another commenter mentioned, I think people were outraged by Chappell’s comments because in her list of behaviours along with stalking and harassment, she talked about approaching someone on the street and asking for a photo. I would argue that those ARE elements that come with being famous and should be expected, however, celebrities should still be allowed to set boundaries and deny photos without it escalating to abuse from fans. When you zoom out and look at the big picture of what she’s saying, she’s absolutely right that people online normalise far too many actions when it comes to interacting with celebrities and we need a wake up call to that.

    Thank you for addressing this topic and sharing your own experience. I'm sorry you had to go through this. I don't understand why people feel the need to know every single thing about a creator. Like if you said you live in Europe, I might think, "Oh, cool, I wonder where," but you don't owe us to divulge the city or even country if you don't feel comfortable. I wonder if we've gotten so used to people oversharing that when we come across someone keeping stuff private it feels weird. One of my favorite UA-camrs purposely has always kept any part of his real name secret and I think it's cool, though he still occasionally shares random tidbits about his life like what state he grew up in, the fact he served in the Army, and what his job was before he became a UA-camr.
    I also think the second lady has some great points. I feel like the fact I do use my real name on UA-cam and Facebook both helps keep me from oversharing and has occasionally made me really think about how I word something so it's not too mean. Anonymity can definitely bring out a worse side of people. Maybe it's a mob mentality thing?
    Also the only reason I've heard of Chappell Roan before is she's suddenly become a topic of conversation on a radio talk show I listen to over the past two or three weeks. They always say her name like "chapel," but if I hadn't heard of her before I can see where it would be tricky to guess how to say her name. 😊

    This is part of the reason I took a break from content create.
    Here's a great quote about this from Brené Brown:
    “If you are not in the arena getting your ass kicked on occasion, I am not interested in or open to your feedback. There are a million cheap seats in the world today filled with people who will never be brave with their own lives, but will spend every ounce of energy they have hurling advice and judgement at those of us trying to dare greatly. Their only contributions are criticism, cynicism, and fear-mongering. If you're criticizing from a place where you're not also putting yourself on the line, I'm not interested in your feedback.”

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hate comment here. But they still happen and you have to be the one to read them all… that sucks! I feel like trolls are just trying to poke and poke until they find a sensitive spot that will get a rise out of you. OBVIOUSLY Europe can be referred to as a continent. I'm proud to say I'm too sensitive for the internet as a recovering internet addict and former NEET. In fact, most people are too sensitive for the internet. The internet has been an overall net negative on the human psyche, that's a simple fact. Everyone's so obsessed with being aloof online as if an increasing amount of young people aren't wasting away on their devices with no direction or purpose.

  • @LudwigVanDrumhead

    Personally, I am confused by Chappell's false equivalence between the stalkers and the random fans that see her in public and ask for a selfie. People have asked celebrities for autographs in public for decades, that's not new. The fact that smartphones and social media have changed it from autograph to selfie doesn't really change much. I would very much appreciate better discussion of this grey area.
    Thank you for not knowing who Chappell Roan is!

    • @AnaPsychology
      @AnaPsychology  18 днів тому +20

      I didn't perceive it as her conflating the two, but rather listing a number of parasocial experiences. While I personally don't find it creepy for people to want a selfie with a public figure, a fan giving backlash when the answer is no is absolutely entitled and boundary-violating. It's not on the same scale as stalking and harassment, but it speaks to the same issues.

    I agree with you wholeheartedly about how Internet is a place where people don't have to be accountable for the things they say and they can literally say anything they would never say to your face in real life. Now think about this - where do people have the time to literally consume SO MUCH content and to leave negative comments for all or most of it? I feel like often their lives are missing something and they are trying to fill those with anything really, to feel they have some sway over other people's mood or to make other people feel bad - something. I also feel a lot of people are just not mature enough. Internet keyboard battles are for younger guys who have too much time on their hands.
