Peter, I nearly choked on my coffee when that blue broke off. At Hudson Park, the blues show up late in the day/early evening going into the back bay hunting bunker. Some quite large and caught in shallow water. Seems like they are getting ready for fall. Greetings from Gio, Western Long Island Sound.

Gio lol yeah it was a bummer, that fish kicked my butt man. I think people underestimate how quickly these fish move in and out of the bays to feed, thats so cool you find them like that. Seriously, signs of fall are basically here already

thanks Will, the small hook did the job, but its def more risky for a bluefish to just inhale the whole thing

It depends on the boat, but we typically diamond jig for the blues, using single hooks, not trebles. Some use live eels for bait fishing. But I've caught some nice blues simply using frozen squid or menhaden.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  Рік тому

I notice that the head boats diamond jig them a lot too. I guess it makes more sense fishing a faster drift and in deeper water...Nice Josh, I think they really will eat anything when they are in the mood

Yup. Kayak trolling kills em every time. Just something about it works when casting does not! Big figure 8’s works well in the yak. So fun.

Hey Pete, caught a nice 10 pound blue out at Orient point yesterday. Man, these fish fight hard. Also caught a 17" blackfish which unfortunately is out of season. Also caught a lot of Porgy's in multiple spots which makes the day go by quickly.

@@allseasonfishing4030 I honestly caught a medium sized one on my way in the first day out and tried smoking it and doing a video but I messed up the smoking amount and over smoked it so the video didn’t work out. Lol it’s not easy to get the perfect smoked bluefish because the size pieces you put in the smoker will matter greatly on the time you have to smoke it.

So many thoughts about this clip.
1st. I doubt you notice in real time. But hearing it... through my head phones.... every vehicle crossing that bridge was a task.... But I stuck it out.

This is 2023. You MUST keep your "pronouns" straight. You can not say "Big mama" followed by "HE spit the hook". Hee hee hee
    Last....
I'm always amazed too, about the CONDITIONS. Looks like no fish and the bite goes off (like this clip). Or the opposite. The conditions look perfect and getting shut out (the clips you don't post). But for baits. I'm NEVER surprised any more.....
    Here's why.
    Think like a fish.
We've all heard "big bait, big fish."
That doesn't mean that if you use a big bait, you'll catch a big fish. That means .... If you use a big enough bait, you can weed out SOME of the smaller fish.
    But..... Fish are opportunistic.
If it's "feeding time" they are gonna eat.
    .. big or small.
So.... Let's, for now, only consider the big fish. .... What if it's feeding time. It's GOING TO EAT !. What if it's full? Maybe.... the big fish lays off a "BIG" bait because it's full because it's been EATING. But... It might still strike a smaller bait thinking.... "I can squeeze this little after dinner mint into my full belly".
So.... I no long thing "big bait, big fish". I'm cool with smaller baits..... but heavy tackle ! ! ! 30 pound braid, medium heavy rod, 3,000 reel and stout hooks.... incase a big fish bites.
    Was that too much?
    Nice double clip.

hahaha, you crack me up Francus always love hearing these type of comments. the bridge sound is very annoying, I do apologize. 😂 is all I can say about the fish pronouns 😂
Your so right though about the small baits and big fish. I guess I really shouldn't be that surprised anymore. same for big baits to avoid small fish, that is also so true. haha I like that train of thought on the opportunistic meal that is small but easy to get and even if they're full are more likely to eat it. Its a balance with the heavier tackle though you don't want to overdo the gear so that you get more tired jigging. my first set up was def too light, the secodn setup was perfect i think, like you mention medium heavy rod and 3000 reel. leader is everything with these blues too, that fish I lost i had only 20lb leader and it chaffed at the leader, if that was even 30lb I think I may have landed it, but its true you also dont want to tire out the fish too much...
