I used to drink pretty heavily, but since going keto and IF, I tend to only have a "cheat night" each week where I drink roughly 2-3 drinks. That used to be nothing, but now I get headaches in the middle of the night and feel like shit the next morning. It's interesting that my cravings for alcohol are lower, and that drinking just a little gives me a hangover. It's probably the best diet for kicking alcoholism.

Drinking alcohol stops me from losing weight.
One thing that I never see brought up is that your brain can feed off alcohol, as it can pass thru the barrier. I lost an uncle due to his alcoholism. His brain was accustomed to feeding off alcohol. He had an accident and was hospitalized. The hospital did not know he was an alcoholic and did not give him the proper nutrition for his alcoholic brain. He went into a coma and died due to this. It is very important that people understand that if you drink too much alcohol, your brain can get accustomed to alcohol, and you cannot always quit cold turkey. Lack of alcohol can literally kill you, if your brain is using it for food.

Thomas: what I do with red wine is I take my keto blood glucose meter strip and dip it into the wine for a second and then it measures how much residual sugar is in the wine. So if you are getting 100 on the meter it means the wine has 1% residual sugar which is a dry red wine. Some red wines, even really expensive ones, have as much as 5%. Even some fruity wines actually are quite dry and don’t have a lot of sugar in them. So the best thing to do with wine is just use that blood glucose meter and test it and then you’ll know if it’s gonna affect you or not. I’ve done this and I’ve noticed that as long as It’s under a percent and a half it doesn’t affect my keytones that is as long as you’re only having a glass. On another note even if the alcohol is higher like 14 1/2% it doesn’t mean that there’s less sugar even though you might think so: the reason is it depends on when they harvested the grapes and so some winemakers will push the bricks up above 25 and then hope that there’s more residual sugar left. But as a general rule you know that has some logic in it but I think the different winemakers or styling wines differently and doing things that that’s not the best way to test how much sugar is left in the wine..

Anything distilled is clear. I know because I make my own vodka, brandy and whiskey. The coloring typically comes from being in charred barrels. I do not get a hangover when I drink, but I also drink water. Much of the hangover is caused by dehydration, unless the distiller did not do the job right and some nasty chemicals got in like butane.

Indeed. Who drinks pure vodka? If it does not taste good, but you drink only to get drunk, then I´d strongly suggest to change that. Also Thomas kinda claimed that brandy, whisky and rum are not distilled - unlike vodka. That is obviously wrong. All strong spirits are distilled, including ouzo, fruit spirits, korn, absinthe etc. Cheap stuff might not restrict to the middle flow and thus have more methanol and propanol in them than you´d like.

So much truth in your comment. Just wanted to say, that's how many accidental overdoses happen. An alcoholic or drug addict will go sober or clean while in jail or rehab, maybe 6 months or so, then get released. They go to buy booze or dope at their old dosage when they were at the height of their addictions. They'll down a handful of pills, or syringe of heroin, or liter of vodka in a sitting and end up dead because their tolerance had reset itself during their sobriety. The body and liver are very resilient. It only takes about 2 weeks to a month to reset your tolerances. If you can keep your "party day" to just once per month, you'll always get smashed off a 6 pack of beer. ;)

So I’ve been on Keto for 5 months and every couple of weeks I’ll go out and have 4-5 beers that are always IPAs and yes my ketones drop to 0.1 the next morning but after a workout the same day my ketones will sky rocket to around 1.7. I’ve actually used a day of drinking to raise my ketones levels and start fat loss again when I’m in small plateau. However when I do drink that many beers I really regulate the carbs from food for that day .

    Hi Thomas,
I have a question with regards to the amount of calories alcohol adds to my intake:
100 ml of vodka at 40% alcohol content include about 40g of alcohol, which converts to 280 kcal.
However if a 70kg male drinks 100 ml of vodka, it leads to a blood alcohol content of 0.035% (based on commonly available blood alcohol calculators), which, at about 6l blood in the body, means that only about 2g of this alcohol made it into the bloodstream. What happened with the other 38g? Can we assume that effectively the 100ml vodka only add 14 kcal to the person’s calorie intake or did I miss something?

I live in the Kentucky bluegrass area where bourbon is made. The holy Trinity for quality and price are Jack Daniels whiskey from TN, then Maker's Mark from KY, then Woodford Reserve from KY. For cheap beer, you get more alcohol for the money with the ice beers. I like the New Belgium beers out of Asheville NC for their quality and price. The West 6th porter beer from Lexington KY is good.

Whiskey is distilled clear like vodka and gin, then aged in oak barrels for color and flavor. Literally what he said was a good thing...I think Thomas needs to provide some clarification on why he thinks whiskey should be avoided.

Hey Tom. What about the organic 2g or no sugar seltzer waters that are available. I am a beer man but made the switch to seltzer water. I noticed I do not get bloated on the water and its half the alcohol level of the various beers I drank. Note I have a high tolerance to alcohol. Not that is anything to brag about but I could kill a case of moderate alcohol level beer and still not only function (not to mean driving) but not wake up with a hangover. I just do not get hungover. Its likely a combo of a high tolerance and the fact I also consume a ton of water even while I am drinking. In many cases the hangover is due to being dehydrated. I know this because I have been over the top at times so I have been there and done that. I do not do that anymore as an FYI. With that I am trying to make better decisions as to what I drink. My wife is Canadian and drinking a few each day after work is just a social thing and very common when you go to a Canadian home. I say there is no such thing as an alcoholic in Canada because they all drink and they can drink just about anyone under the table. Any thought on the seltzer water would be appreciated.

    • @YeoMinnn

You can up your calories to bulk. everything related to diet, even keto, is based on calorie consumption too. if you go over your caloric intake even on keto, you will plateau and maintain or possibly even gain weight back.

  • @kosukekoichi8666
    @kosukekoichi8666 3 роки тому

Aging alcohol is not fermentation! It is an extraction of resins in the barrel. Congeners are purely dependent on yeast fermentation conditions; fruit vs grain, pot vs reflux still, temp, ph, specific gravity, yeast strain.

An occasional glass of wine on KETO is much better than a mug of beer. I had always treated myself to a pint of IPA beer after playing golf. Now I order a glass of white wine lower in carbs (Chardonnay or Pino Grigio) which perfectly satisfies. Modification is key unless you're an alcoholic.

What i would really like no know is IF we have alcohol either as a drink or in our food(some dishes are just too damn good) how much will affect us how much of it and WHAT can we do to offset the effects. Like should we do a HiiT at that day before to "make room for the carbs"? Should be have a special diet after thet "cheat drink day"?or Special work out?
