    So just in case you were curious: Homura's wish was to meet madoka again and become her protector instead. Doing so, she gained her time magic. Her shield acts like an hourglass and has enough sand for 1 month's worth of time. If she stops time, the hourglass trickles down, but otherwise is at rest. So when Homura goes "oh no!" right before getting hit, she's, quite literally, run out of time.

    • @baikaachyuplays5097
      @baikaachyuplays5097 8 місяців тому +90

      To stop time, she stops the sand in her sand timer from moving, to turn back time, she can reset the sand timer to turn back time, she also has an unlimited space in her shield. She got a shield because her wish was "i wish...i can redo my meeting Ms.Kaname all over again. But this time, instead of her protecting me, i want to be strong enough to protect her!" The shield came from the I want to protect her part and the time magic is from the i want to redo her meeting with Madoka

    For the question about why people don't know about Magical girls if Incubators have been following humanity since the beginning, this episode showed Joann of Arc and Cleopatra so it's hinted that every girl known in History could have been a Magical girl: girls accused of witchcraft, priestesses, princesses, famous soldiers etc. Humanity just gave them other names.

      Tart Magica is the title of the Joan of Arc spinoff. I think it's my favorite Madoka spinoff but tonally it's more like Nanoha than Madoka. The horrifying aspects of being a magical girl aren't dwelt on much and the whole manga is pretty much a series of fights between megucas with cool gimmicks. My favorite is Elisa, the princess knight armed with a multibarrel musket with a halberd bayonet. In MagiReco she's voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro in full "ojousama desu wa" mode (MagiReco did an amazing job casting the manga spinoff megucas on the whole)

    you're so right about homura showing she's a true magical girl by never giving up on madoka. i love how pmmm recognizes that regardless of how cruel the world is, deep down, magical girls and all of humanity are fueled by hope. homura, sayaka, and kyoko contracted for selfless reasons (they might be selfish as well but they're fundamentally about helping other people), and even though mami wished for herself, she made it her mission to save *as many people as possible* with her powers

    That "Witches Be Crazy" mug is positioned just right to show through the middle of the transparent video overlay (as long as the colors don't block it), and it became perfectly noticeable right when Walpurgisnacht showed up on screen. For a brief moment I'd forgotten about the mug, and wondered if that was actually part of the video, or if you'd added an extra bit in editing. Nope, just the background mug. Totally appropriate.

    Each girl has her own theme music. Mami's is hopeful and bright, but there is a sense of sadness in it. Sayaka's is solemn and depressing. Kyoko's is very lonely and remorseful. I'll write about Madoka's after next episode. But all 4 of these are written in the traditional 4/4 meter.
    Homura's theme is a waltz, written in the 3/4 meter and consists of 3 quater notes repeating themselves. Her theme is literally in a different time and looped.

      I'll add that confessio means "Confession" (pretty obvious) and Sagitta Luminis means "Arrow of Light"
      Creden Justitiam means "Believe in Justice"
      Decretum is a little more complicated, in Latin it derives from Decre which means to decide, and decretum literally means something decided. I take Decretum to mean Resolve, since it fits with Sayaka.

    • @stephenpriest
      @stephenpriest 8 місяців тому +5

      Sayaka's theme and Madoka's theme are both in 3/4. Decretum is most definitely also a waltz. In fact, it's poignant that only in the movie do we get a rendition of Sayaka's theme in 4/4 (during "Holy Quintet").
      I also don't think anyone knows which theme is really Kyoko's (unless you have an official source, i.e., from Kajiura). Some say Confessio, some say Anima Mala. I'm personally inclined to think it's Venari Strigas, since a) it's closest to what's used for Kyoko during her transformation in the movie (Holy Quintet), and b) it's one of the themes used in Prelude to Act 1. Plus, Confessio is also used when Junko talks with Kazuko, so it's not unique to Kyoko's confession
      Also, I'll add to the discussion that "Credens Justitiam" means "believing in justice" since Credens is a present participle. The title describes Mami (and the others), it is not an imperative.

    The way you pointed out that Walpurgisnacht is framed as something that could happen irl: This was airing right when the 2011 earthquake/hurricane happened. The show had to be delayed for weeks because the last two episodes could be considered triggering in that sense. If PMMM is one big metaphor, and if you squint hard, Kyubey is like Jiminy Cricket: he's a voice sitting on your shoulder. It's just that instead of being the girls' conscience and voice of morality, Kyubey is their own internal voice of logic.
    (Notice that he only deceives the girls the way that their own flawed logic or expectations could betray themselves.)
    So, the incubators (and by extension, magical girls) could never be exposed, any more than your own thought processes could be "exposed".

    I remain endlessly fascinated by how willing viewers are to just take Kyubey at his word. Kyubey implies that Homura is the reason why Madoka has so much potential, but this isn't really any different to when he implied to Kyoko that Sayaka could be saved. While it definitely makes sense from a narrative and thematic perspective, we've seen repeatedly that the makers of the show will happily exploit the audience's knowledge of such things. Ultimately, he doesn't really care one way or the other, and will say whatever it takes to achieve his goal.
    As for the question of Homura's selfishness, I think these people are relying on sources outside of the text of the show itself.

    • @Nevri.

      QB never lies. He only omits the full truth and picks the right words. It's reasonably plausible to assume you can't turn back from becoming a witch, but there's a possibility that a way he doesn't know about exist, so he emphasizes that part to Kyouko, while blatantly telling Homura "there's no way", to manipulate her to try rescue Sayaka and die. The same is for Madoka. It could be the truth, it could be just a possibility (he does say it's just his speculations), but 1 way or another, it doesn't matter, as long as it works and it did, because it made Homura question herself and gave up hope. And well considering Madoka did just start out as a average, but later when she contracts her power level is off the chart, I think QB is correct about Madoka's power being directly buffed by Homura resetting the timeline around her and making her the center of it.

  • @Winterpelt

    Definitely have tissues on hand for the last episode, it's one of the episodes of television I've seen where I cry basically nonstop the entire run through.
    I can never come down too harsh on Homura for her decisions in the show and if she's being selfish or not. She's a young girl in an absolutely horrible, traumatizing situation grasping at the fading memory of one of the few instances of kindness shown to her in her life. It's so apt that the only thing keeping her from giving into grief entirely is her desperate hope that she can at least save Madoka from this fate, that if she stops moving towards her goal for even a moment she'll shatter. And I do think that her original deep relationship with Madoka after all these time loops is essentially gone, just buried under this mountain of trauma and an deeply idolized view of who Madoka is. If you do ever watch the Rebellion movie, I think how they portray Madoka as a character vs her characterization in the show is HEAVILY influenced by Homura's perception of her (it's also very hard to have discussions about if Homura's decisions are selfish or not because of that movie LOL)

  • @gaiathemuse
    @gaiathemuse 8 місяців тому +9

    Watching this series back through you has got me thinking.
    Homura's speech is much sadder because she wished to be able to protect Madoka, not protect Madoka "successfully". It also seems like a magical girl is destined to exist in every timeline once the wish is made so Madoka's fate was sealed, there truly wasn't anything Homura could've done.
    "Let me protect you." doesn't work cause it's just not who Madoka is. You can't just tell someone to sit back while they watch everyone they care about suffer. All it did was ignite Madoka's insecurities further.
    I wonder what would've happened if Homura did suceed. Would Madoka made a wish to Kyubey to revive everyone? Though she would not be able to be a witch, would she have fallen into despair? Possibly end her own life because of it?
    They are the antithesis of each other. Homura's protectiveness robs Madoka's agency and leaves her a nervous wreck. While Madoka's need to help prevents Homura's wish from ever coming true

  • @meowtain9566
    @meowtain9566 8 місяців тому +9

    What I love about that scene with Madoka and her mom, when she lets her go save Homura, is that one of the first things she asks is if she's sure she isn't being tricked about anyone.
    On one hand, it shows the audience that Madoka has a better picture about what being a magical girl is and what Kyuubeys actual goal is. Meaning she'll be very careful about what she wishes for if she decides to make a wish.
    On the other hand, it immediately show the difference in maturity between the two and why this whole contract thing would never fly with adults. It took Madoka the whole show to think about something her mother thought of immediately when being presented with not even a vague idea of whats going on (and this isn't a diss at Madoka, just pointing out that at the end of the day she is just a child)
    Also side note (and spoilers for Go!Princess! for those who haven't seen it), you mentioned it being a very magical girl anime thing not wanting to see the main character give up hope and give in to despair. Funnily enough, just yesterday I watched the episodes where Haruka does just that. It made me realise how similar the two anime are with both dealing with hope and despair just in a different way.

In Magia record, theres a clan outside the main city that sees the incubators as a blessing as well as an opportunity for the town they reside in! I'm sure walpurgisnacht has been explained a million times over to you at this point, but:
    Walpurgisnacht (true name unknown) is the stage construction witch, whose existence is not from a single magical girl, but an amalgam of countless witches. Her shadowy familiars are in the shape of fallen magical girls, and in the storyboards and manga, the visages of mami, sayaka, and kyouko appear with her.
    The humanoid figure is a doll, and the witch's body is the gears that form its top. She also forms a pair with kriemhild gretchen, madoka's witch, to form an hourglass. Speaking of gretchen, the very top of the witch bears a resemblance to madoka.

    On the subject of karmic destiny, Madoka was absolutely fucked by the very first rewind. We saw it - she died just like a normal magical girl in the first timeline, and in the second her soul gem manifested in reality without a labyrinth, using the clouds to form her body. From the very first rewind her witch was on par with Walpurgisnacht at the very LEAST. We see Homura do it like 4 more times, and according to the authors it happens like 90-something times that we don't see.
    The entire universe rewrites itself by roughly a month and a half every time Homura goes back to try again. The very first time Homura reverses time because of Madoka, Madoka becomes the centerpoint around which the entirety of the universe revolves - all of 'karmic destiny' becomes entwined with her, because once upon a time, everything everywhere that happened, DIDN'T, because Homura said 'Madoka died, so I'm going to rewind'.
    .
    On QB's livestock comparison, I think the explanation of entropy is even more clear when it comes to eating plants. It takes a potato like what, 3-6 months to grow? You eat that potato, you don't have 3-6 months of energy, you're hungry again in a couple hours. If you ate a whole pig, that was raised over like a year, even if it as several hundred pounds, you're not getting a year of meat out of it.
    .
    Homura's Japanese VA says she cried, when it came to the scene in her spacetime apartment.
    .
    Episode 11 was scheduled to air during a fucking earthquake/tsunami. They delayed it for like a wholeass fucking month, which meant that the original TV broadcast had to live with the fucking Episode 10 cliffhanger - Ep 11 and 12 got shown back to back. Here's the quote from the Madoka wiki:
    >This episode was scheduled to air on 17 March 2011 but has been pulled due to the 2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami. On April 10, 2011 it was announced that Madoka was scheduled to resume its broadcasting on the 21 of April 2011 and it would air the last two episodes back-to-back.
    .
    You said 'why'd QB say that to Homura' and you see it at the end of the episode. QB drops that bomb on it and she's not going to repeat anymore - now it just needs to convince her to contract.
    .
    You say that 'not losing hope' is a really magical girl kind of trope, and it definitely is. I think that's what makes this really a 'subversion', in comparison to all the edgy dark magical girl copycats that came after this - a lot of it was just dark for dark's sake, but the framework of the magical girl is still here, even if it's argued against, with stuff like 'the power of friendship should save Sayaka Miki' and the like.

      I wonder what other magic homura can use cause in the scene with sayaka rejected homuras grief seed homura was gonna kill sayaka with magic I wonder what that was about so does that mean magical girls are able to use other type of magic rather than the one the wish gave them?

      @@SkyBlue-fp2wt I think it's open to imagination. The way I see it, I think all the girls have their main magic based on their wish, but they all have power ups as a magical girl like super jump, super resistance, super strenght, those magical things they couldn't do as a human. All of them probably can shoot magic beams and stuff, but It's a matter of how much magic they can use and how good they are at it.
      For example, they can all heal their bodies if the soul gem isn't broken, but Sayaka simply heals faster due to the nature of her wish.
      Mami can shapeshift weapons like she did with Sayaka's baseball bat, they can all do it if they try I guess, but Mami does it because she's just good at magic for being a stronger veteran.

    I'm not sure if you're releasing these as you watch them, but I'm hoping to catch you before you watch the movie, Rebellion. I want to note that I think you should check out the opening sequence to the two other movies - they're recaps of the series cut down to fit in theatres, so you don't need to watch the whole things. They do add some music unique to the recap movies and new animation and stuff, which you might be interested in, and I consider the intro sequence that movies 1 and 2 share as required viewing. It's pretty neat.

    It shouldn't be that you want to see people hold hope despite, it should be that you want people to hold hope because. "Despite" can work, but it probably won't forever, because you've already given in a little with the thesis. While I know "because" was the basis of some magical girl shows at the time this show was made, *very* few of them examined... because what?
    The hope Homura has isn't... *really* "hope because," in my opinion. I understand everything she does and why she did it, and I am firmly in the "Homura did nothing wrong" camp, but she committed herself to a cycle, and a cycle is what she got. Another good example is Sailor Moon (the manga, I can't even tell you what is up with the show holy crap), where over time 'hope despite' wears out, and if you want to keep going eventually you need to remember what it was like to hope because.
    I always loved this genre, and PMMM helped me understand why.

    Appreciate how you have no time for Kyubey's dickishness, he's a textbook emotional abuser who justifies himself with abstract concepts that can't possibly fact checked. Maybe he believes he's doing the right thing, but based on how he treats Madoka and Co., why give him the benefit of the doubt?

    Around this time, the great‐east JPN earthqwake&over100 feets tsunami and more happened.

    This is where the show gets a _little_ wonky and it's unclear how much is Urobuchi's bias and how much is meant to be Kyubey being a little bastard. Imho it doesn't do enough to refute his claims and given the Butcher has a pattern...
    First of all, Kyubey implies that every important woman in history was only important because she had magic. There are no magical boys in this universe. But then he says that without the Incubators, humans would still be living in caves, which implies that without these women human history would never have progressed. So it's both 'women can't do anything without us' _and_ 'men are entirely useless' so I think the implication was meant to be that all of humanities achievements link back to the Incubators which is just... a ludicrous claim and I think we can discount it.
    Then there's the comparison to cattle which, even if you're vegan, I think you can see how there's no comparison at all. For all the meat industries cruelties, animals _are_ given something of a sheltered life with free roaming (provided it's free range) and medicine, safe from predators, exploring the outdoors ect. Whereas magical girls are forced to fight and given a short, brutal life in the hope of a wish that will never be granted, then an even more brutal death. It's more like if all meat raised chickens were also cock fighters.
    Finally there's this idea that the wishes themselves are the problem, which people take to be the main thesis of the show and Urobuchi punishing girls for having wishes and dreams. I honestly don't know enough about the man to think that's his message, but then I look at Fate/Zero and wonder. (Don't eat me Fate fans.)

    I think the common reaction most people have with these last 2-3 episodes, crying over what Homura goes through, proves that she wasn't in the wrong or acting selfishly. We would all react differently if we sensed malice in her heart.

      This, she may not go about some things in the best way, but every decision she makes is very human and made at least trying to do right thing.
      Even in rebellion, the world she willingly creates at the end goes to show she isn't as selfish as even she claims to be
