      There's a lot of time betwren Homura jumping off the building and Homura(angel wings) in the desert(paint splatter wingd). The story is kinda interesting but has never been animated. It also shows what happened to Sayaka, why Homura has a bow and doesn't have her sand timer and it also gives a glimpse of how powerful Homura really is.

    Homura remembers cause her wish specifically said Madoka by name on the contract. Despite the consequences of Madoka's wish, Homura's wish still stand as it prevented her to forget the one specific person she had wished to protect.

      It also interesting that her weapon and powers seemingly changed to accommodate what “protecting Madoka” means in the new timeline. Instead of a shield and time powers to go back and change Madoka’s fate, she uses a bow and her wings to ensure that Madoka is remembered even if only by Homura herself.

    This is definitely one of those rare series where your first watch isn't truly finished until you rewatch it with full context. There is so much symbolism and foreshadowing that you have no reason to catch on your first ride.
    Also, this is like the poster-child for bittersweet endings. Such almost saccharine sweetness given by Madoka's untarnished hope balance by Homura's pain at realizing what was lost, it's just... BOOM, right to the heart.

  • @user-xd1zp6nm7l
    @user-xd1zp6nm7l 8 місяців тому +86

    Pay attention before watching Rebellion. Homura is fighting "Wraiths" now. And Homura, Kyoko and Mami are watching together the moment when Sayaka becomes a witch and her soul is purified by Madoka.

  • @willpina
    @willpina 8 місяців тому +277

    Each of the girls represents a stage of grief
    Sayaka is Depression. Mami is Denial. Kyoko is Anger. Homura is Bargaining. Madoka is Acceptance.
    About Madoka's song, Sagitta Luminis, it is a solemn song that has a grandiose feeling throughout. There's a finality to it that isn't sad, but isn't happy either. However, if you listen with headphones you can heat a faint distortion in the background that almost sounds like a cry for help

    • @AllenbysEyes
      @AllenbysEyes 8 місяців тому +2

      Last time I watched the show it reminded me of "Gabriel's Oboe" by Ennio Morricone, both in the arrangement and the "spiritually uplifting but also brutally sad" feel of it.

    • @juanpablorobayo9891
      @juanpablorobayo9891 8 місяців тому +17

      Gotta be honest, I dislike that interpretation of Sagitta Luminis. LIke, this whole thing of "Oh she'd regret sacrificing herself' is so sad and defeatist to me. Madoka faced the most powerful witch to ever exist--herself, all of her despair and regrets--and was able to defeat her. We know from the show that witches are dangerous, and that the power level between a witch and the magical girl she comes from is, at best, equal. Usually, theres a spike in destructive capability (you cant tell me that Sayaka, for example, has the same power as her Witch). So Madoka was unironically facing impossible odds--personally, magically, and meta-physically--and WON.
      Like ets give maadoka this ultimate victory. This overcoming of her own despair and her ascension out of selfelss love. If Madoka hadnt had what it took to overcome herself, to genuinely love and be so kind and powerful, she would not have been able to defeat her own witch. I genuinely don't believe that Kyuubey's wish would've worked that far. Madoka became a goddess. We know from the lore that if a goddess can get her hands on the incubators, she's able to completely dominate them. Madoka won, and was able to love and do good things. The idea that she would regret it, when she knows that she's literally made heaven real and is out there making sure all these desperate girls are getting heaven, is kind of lame.

  • @Asehpe
    @Asehpe 8 місяців тому +54

    "I fully expected them to be like a team, that you would see at the same time..." But they were! In other realities, that is, in some (many?) of the loops that Homura kept going through, they all fought together and had adventures and were friends and everything. But this anime was based on Homura's Last Loop, when we see the Last Madoka. And because in it the Last Madoka (like the Buddha of Indian tradition) learned of all the evil things in the world of magical girls by experiencing them in her best friends one after the other... they didn't. That's in some ways one of the saddest timelines, in which these girls never get to work together as a team; but it is also the happiest timeline, in that Madoka, made wise (enlightened?) by learning all secrets before becoming a Magical Girl, has her Great Idea... and changes everything. 🙂

  • @Asehpe
    @Asehpe 8 місяців тому +33

    "But don't they cancel out? Madoka's good, and her despair?" In principle they should yes. It should all come down to zero, as Sayaka said when she despaired. But it doesn't -- and that's the incredible thing about her wish. Madoka said she wanted to destroy all witches, with her own hands. 'All' witches includes the very witch she will someday become. Her wish can only be granted if she has the power to kill her own witch, which she does in this episode. But... isn't that a logical contradiction? How can her... and then how could she be alive to... How?!? Again, what we can say is: if the Incubators' system is such that it has to respect the wish; if it can grant any wish accessible / thinkable / imaginable to the one making the wish, as long as there's enough energy (and Madoka's is enough for anything), then... then it can do even 'impossible' things, it has to deal even with logical contradictions. But it's illogical---does not compute--it's illogial!!!... so let's reset the universe into a place where it would never be necessary for Madoka to kill her own shadow.
    Madoka says to Homura that she is the person she is because of her, Homura. And she thanks her for that. Prior to this, after the conversation with the Incubator, this fact depressed Homura -- all this huge concentration of power that made Madoka look like catnip to Incubators was because of her, Homura! But now Madoka is thanking her, and with good reason: if Homura hadn't made Madoka's fate accumulate so much energy, there would never have been enough for this wish to be possible. Homura literally made the impossible possible -- not for herself, because she did not have this power; but for the one she loved, Madoka. Homura set the ball; Madoka kicked it. Or, better yet: Homura didn't even know she was setting the ball, but she was; Madoka understood Homura was unwittingly setting the ball, because she, Madoka, had the idea to kick the ball; so she thanked Homura for it, opening her eyes, and kicked the ball.
    I always struggled with Christ figures in fiction, and even with the 'real' one in Christian mythology, because they seemed so bland. But not Madoka. She has my total and unreserved admiration, because she was better than simply a heart full of love -- she was also smart, and saw what nobody else had seen before her. She saw the ball, and she imagined how to kick it. Kudos to her. Because of that, she is my favorite anime character ever.

    • @williambarnes5023
      @williambarnes5023 5 місяців тому +6

      More importantly: Madoka's wish is inherently a paradox.
      There are three events that have to happen: Madoka has to become a witch. Madoka has to fight and defeat that witch. Madoka has to appear to Madoka before Madoka becomes a witch and do that hand-cupped-over-the-gem grief release shatter death thing. So what order do we put those in, from Madoka's perspective? Even with meta-time, and time travel, it's not possible.
      We have three Madokas we need to consider. Witch Madoka, who we see about to end the universe. God Madoka, who pops out and purges gems of magical girls, and Tired Madoka, who defeats all eternity's witches with her own hands.
      Witch Madoka and Tired Madoka both have to be the endpoint of the subjective experience, because Witch Madoka has to be killed by Tired Madoka, and God Madoka has to shatter Tired Madoka's soul gem.
      God Madoka stops Tired Madoka from becoming the Witch Madoka that Tired Madoka needs to defeat before God Madoka can purge Tired Madoka. So God Madoka can't purge Tired Madoka yet, because Witch Madoka has to happen and be beaten first. It's a double-sided mobius time loop where each prevents the other.

    Poor Mami always tried to get a magical girl team together, but the realities of being a magical girl just got in the way. But hey, one of the many benefits of the new universe Madoka made is that magical girl teams are much more practical. You'll notice the little black grief cubes Homura was giving to Kyubey, as an alternative to individual grief seeds. This way, everyone who teams up to take on a wraith gets a piece of the pie. And then it's back to Mami's place for more pie.

    Also walpurgisnact has been described as a coven of witches that are super old and they all absorbed into one another and became a super witch. Madoka’s witch form and walpurgisnact witch form together forms an hourglass shape with either of them being the bottom and top half and it hasn’t appeared in the story yet but it would look like an hourglass running out of time.

  • @steveweighner
    @steveweighner 8 місяців тому +15

    I think in the new universe, the one where all witches were erased, Kyubeys would play an extremely different role prior to their former selves. Mostly, they would become sort of guardians or guides for magical girls, considering that, you know, if their magical girl dies, they can't collect those little wraith cubes as efficiently anymore. Thus, they try to educate the magical girl, try to be as transparent as they can towards them, and even have other magical girls help out in training the newer, more inexperienced magical girls.

    FYI, Magia Record is just a spin off based on the gacha game, and is not directed by the same people as the original series & movie. IMO, it is not worth wasting time watching it, theres nothing to add to the main story, and the pacing is too weird. It was less selfless than you’d think, Madoka’s wish. It was, in essence, the culmination of her self-worth issues and her depression. She, in the process of improving the lives of nearly everyone, ceased to exist in the memories of nearly all of those close to her, nearly all the people who would care about her and miss her. The perfect suicide, one might say.
    Of course, this isn’t to say that Madoka is okay with this outcome. Far from it, even. She canonically prefers timelines untouched by the Law of Cycles, where the inhabitants have developed their own solutions to the Witch thing, and more importantly, where Madoka still exists as a human.
    Ultimately, Madoka regrets doing what she did, and if she had the option, would do things differently. After all, in her character song, Mata Ashita…
    “Instead of "See you later"
    I should've said, "I'll stay for a little longer"
    I wanted and hoped that you would realize it
    But with the words "See you later"
    I lie to myself again
    And hide my true feelings beneath my usual smile
    Saying, "See you later," I wave my hand
    Cracking a smile, yet I'm feeling lonely
    The truth is, I still have more to talk about
    But even my voice saying, "See you later"
    is so near yet far from you that it can't reach you
    So let me say this like I always do, just once more
    "See you tomorrow"”

    If you are interested in the Madoka Magica universe. There's also another anime called Magia Record, which is a side story in the same universe. There's actually a bunch of side stories, but Magia Record is the only one that got animated as it's from a mobile game that is still, to this day, expanding this universe. While Magia record does follow all new characters, the original madoka characters are also apart of it. I would recommend that you take a look at that too if you're interested.

    I love this show and analyzing it so much.
    First of all- Kyoko and Sayaka are absolutely foils of each other. Kyoko is the epitome of selfishness, to the point where she is outright willing to let people die- and Sayaka is the epitome of selflessness, to the point she is willing to take great risks to herself. But by the end of episode 9, they've shifted places! Sayaka ended up focusing on her own pain and essentially destroying herself over it, unwilling to take any help. Kyoko, meanwhile, moves away from her more selfish viewpoint and towards Sayaka's, which ultimately causes her to attempt to save Sayaka and when that fails sacrifice herself. I really like the writing there.
    If you're watching Rebellion next week- Rebellion can be controversial among the fandom, especially among people who think it makes X character a terrible person, or "isn't true to the characters", or whatever. I disagree with all that. It's a great movie with good twists and foreshadowing- there was some in this episode, actually- and I think has good characterization, assuming you, yknow, look at what they say in the movie. Plus it has a lot of well made animation and scenes... only complaint is they left off on something you very much want a continuation on, but they didn't make the next movie (or any news about it) for years and years!

There are some differences between the game's story such as a few missing arcs and many many but many magical girl stories you can check out for yourself but I still think the anime seasons of it are pretty enjoyable and still contain what made madoka great beyond what some elitists might say, I hope this clears up about the concept :]

    Walpurgisnacht (St. Walpurgis Night) is the German name for May Day or Beltane, and was a day witches were believed to come together and do witchy things (to further demonize old pagan traditions celebrating the start of summer and give the church a reason to arrest people for partying). So, the thing or being we see as Walpurgisnacht is actually made up of lots of witches. As Madoka undoes various witches throughout history, we can see them being peeled away from the whole and fading away.
    In terms of merch, my favorite thing they made, if you can find them, were soul gem charms (for phones/keys, etc) for all the characters, roughly the "correct" size. I have Homura's. There are also a few Mami things that involve taking her head off as a lid, such as a USB drive. The tickets for the first movie had her printed on them too, so that the stub being torn would take her head off.

    Magia Record is a complicated topic, but it's absolutely not necessary to watch in order to understand Madoka Magica as a whole, especially as it is a self-contained multiverse that's (supposedly) disconnected from the main series :)

    10:13, to Kyubey, "Don't get any ideas" lol...
    Magia Record is an unrelated side story with mostly different characters. It feels very different and had different writers, and on the whole is not as good, but it's still in the franchise if you want to watch it. So glad you made it through this show, I look forward to your Rebellion reaction!
    At the end of the show, in the new world, Sayaka fell into despair (for similar reasons as before), so Madoka took her away before she turned into a witch. Because witches don't exist, Mami and Kyoko are now alive again, but witches like the one that killed Mami are all gone, too. So, the beginning of Rebellion will be intentionally confusing... ask all the questions and let the movie reveal the answers! :)

    Love your reactions!
    Before watching Rebellion, keep in mind how the world works after Madoka's wish because a lot of people including me, didn't pay too much attention to It and didn't understand what the characters refer in Rebellion:
    -Magical Girls now fight against wraiths, not witches.
    -Magical girls refer to Madoka as the "law of the cycle", because She is now like a physical law of the universe.
    -when a magical girl is taken by the law of the cycle, She disappears.
    Madoka takes Magical Girls right before they become witches.

    • @yuratchkaplisetskys3063

    If I’m not mistaken, according to the Wraith manga, in this universe Homura isn’t a Magical Girl because of Kyubey, instead she made a Wish granted by Madoka “To keep her memories of Madoka” or so, so her new ability in this universe is Memory Manipulation and she now uses a bow similar to Madoka’s, and she los her Time Shield 😢

      @@reversalring3522 No. I played the gacha, before they run Global to he ground with insane pacing and closed it, because of "not enough profit" (gee, I wonder why). Story has some issues, but I enjoyed it overall and it has some great characters and moments. I was strictly talking about anime adaptation. It absolutely butchers game's story. It's too rushed, cuts and changes a lot of stuff, doesn't explain half the stuff and in general, has nowhere the same impact as the original story in game had, so I personally can't recommend watching anime adaptation of it. Reading it through uploads of in-game story bits or manga adaptation, which is a much faithful adaptation of the story is imo a better option.

    • @reversalring3522
      @reversalring3522 8 місяців тому

      @@Nevri. of course they changed the game's story and cut a lot of it, the pacing was absolute trash with most of the dialogue being useless to the plot and you had to do about 20 missions just to get about 10 seconds of actual story progression. I ended up giving up on the story and focused on character events and special events instead. The story's awful pacing was really sad 'cause otherwise, the gameplay was really good, and it's the only gacha i've actually used money for. Even though the game as long been gone, I'll always remember my accele and MP regen focused team

      @@reversalring3522 That's funny, cos I actually liked reading the story and found gameplay to be terrible. And yes, of course they can't adapt it word for word and will cut out some stuff, but they literally cut out some plot stuff and other stuff they completely changed, making it straight up different story. By the end of season 1, anime and game are going into 2 completely different directions.

    Magia Record was originally a mobile game spin off. It takes place in a universe unaffected by the Law of Cycles (Madoka's God form). For some very specific reasons, she couldn't interact with that one universe without breaking it, so she left it alone. There is an anime based on the game but it does change a lot of the story, inclusing its ending. I'm not a huge fan of it, but I know a lot of people like it, so maybe you should give it a try someday!

    Magia Record is a gacha fighting Madoka Magica game. Sadly we can't play it anymore. Only japan can. But there is also the Magia Record series, we can watch this too. Nothing that happened in the original series, Rebellion and in the new movie are connected to the side story series. But it doesn't mean it's bad or anything. I mean everyone has their own opinion, so I don't know how u will think about the side story series. It has three seasons and u see alot of magical girls. I mean it. ALOT. Mami, Kyoko and Sayaka appear in season 1, then they appear in season 2 with Homura and Madoka. There will be other protagonists, new plotwists, new characters, alot of new characters and I absolutly love the last scene of the final episode of Magia Record, the series. It's ur choice if u want to watch it. U don't have to if u don't want to 😊

    Ok, first things first. Thank you for this wonderful reaction series! It was a treat, to watch someone else's first time with PMMM. I was recalling my own first time as well, which is the main reason I'm watching reactions at all.
    I've come to this channel through ANAI Discord server, where I lurk occasionally for fanfiction on Madoka. There was four episodes of Madoka here if my memory doesn't betray me. After watching them and subscribing to this channel I kept waiting for more, and, wow, I wasn't mistaken in doing so! Your reaction was so honest and thoughtful, respectful even. A rare thing.
    Now, about the episode. While many people point out Madoka's similarities to Jesus, and they aren't really wrong in doing so, her actual role as goddess puts her more in line with Odin of all people. It's not just my opinon even. She's a psychopomp, and in some way a literal Death of Magical Girls. Not to mention that the condition of her coming for you is being on the brink of despair. Magical Girl, whose Gem was broken not darkened, would not be taken by Madoka because of the ramifications of her wish and, consecutively, divine domain. A Magical Girl's Valhalla indeed. You need either to fight well enough to die like that or to not fight at all.

  • @Blarce
    @Blarce 8 місяців тому

    Note that Madoka doesn't shoot her arrow at Walpurgistnacht, but up into the sky, where it spreads out across the world - she doesn't kill her, but does that thing, eating the despair that caused her in the first place. Walpurgisnacht falls apart because she's being erased from existence.
    Though that requires elaboration I guess. IRL, Walpurgisnacht is a holiday said to be a gathering of witches - therefore, Walpurgisnacht the Witch is a big ball of witches. It's said that the magical girl that caused her was lonely, and wished to have friends or somesuch thing - thus, in her witch form, she slurps up witches and magical girls and has become essentially a giant wandering concentration of despair, strong enough to cause natural disasters and stuff.
    Homura is awesome. When you watch it dubbed Sayaka's VA stands out a lot.
    I still haven't watched Magia Record actually despite writing fucken dissertations in so many of the Madoka reactions on youtube, probably most of which are just deleted now. It looks... not as tight and well-written as the series, I think, but probably good as a don't-think-too-hard kinda magical girl thing.

    Magia Record is a spin-off AU type of thing from the official canon. You don’t HAVE to look into it if you don’t want to, but if you want more of this world with different twists and turns- I’d still recommend it! A lot of what happens in this episode is subject to interpretation... The scene with Mami and Kyōko may be seen as real, or it may be happening only inside of Madoka's head (as it is before the changes in the universe that led to the big reboot) -- it may be Madoka simply coming to terms with what her 'life' will be like from now on.
