I just bought a house that was built in 1952 and all your videos have been EXTREMELY helpful in all the DIY reno projects that I have been trial-and-erroring my way through. The information, pace, camera angles, lighting, and demonstrations that you guys do in your videos are second to none. I especially liked your video on installing a hanging ceiling, and doing kitchen wiring. Many thanks! HouseImprovements has saved me loads of time, money, effort, and frustration. I hope you guys keep making vids.

Thanks Shanon from a grateful Gringo. You Canadians are our perfect neighbors, so meticulous, so experienced, so confident in world class infrastructure ventures. I see your homes when I visit every part of your country and am filled with envy and admiration. Every part of your residential and commercial zones sticks out as so modern and classy compared to US, Europe, Australia, Japan. Non like some of our run down dilapidated, boarded up , 3rd world areas. .

We thank you for the compliment... but believe me when I say we have a long way to go. Stay in the right areas and everything looks great, but go looking for dark places and you can find them here, too.
Naturally, we have a pretty wide spectrum when it comes to economic status, but we try to reduce poverty as much as possible with social programs.
Not everyone agrees, although it's shown that reducing crippling poverty has benefits that can actually reduce the overall cost of things such as crime and mental health. Help others and you will help yourself :)

Dude I loved how you used a square and a little piece of plywood to cut on it makes nice looking work it’s how our younger guys need to do it until they get better at making straighter freehanded cuts without also cutting through the finished roof ;)

Pressing the locker we can stop the flow and I use a nail or a screw to lock the tip.

If you nail a receiver to the first shingle-cut. It will have a lip that will capture the bottom of the vent. No nails through bottom of vent once done.
I use three 4” pieces of Aluminum or copper for my receiver. I nail it to roof at marked location for a 1/4 lap ( bend over ) at bottom of vent , Mark location of vent nail receiver first hanging down past your marked location. seal with putty, install vent as you have.
Only difference is I do not nail vent at the bottom. I fold over 3 tabs on my receiver. Basically flat strip that hangs past vent and fold over to capture vent bottom
Hope that explains to a novice.
I only have one roof left to finish ( mine ) and my 40 year roofing career is done. Mainly commercial jobs.
    Enjoyed your video.

Make sure you don't cut into any rafters under the decking. You can drill 4 pilot holes at each of the corners of your needed opening from the underside of the decking and then saw from above. Sawing from the inside means having to cut holding the saw above you- not the safest or easiest position.

    • @hackiehackerson

Thank you for the video, very informative. At 9:10 you put a shingle edge (left side) over a nail in the previous layer. Since the shingle edge does not keep water from the previous layer in the joint area wouldn't this be akin to putting in a shiner and thereby allowing water to pass over and seep through that nail hole below the shingle edge?

Why did you run sealent on the bottom edge of the vent? If condensate builds up it has no where to go but pool and get back into the attic... Seems to me it would have made more sense to leave the bottom edge of the vent free to allow condensate to run out and away. Does this style of vent act differently then say a bathroom or cooking shroud vent?

Nice work. I have a leaking vent and wonder if it needs to be replaced and I would have to replace those shingles at that level and above or could just use better roof silicone adhesive or tar at the bottom lip where it is coming in by the vent hole. It is only one out of about 6 that is doing this. I would have thought it would have some better design with a dome. Just seeing it from the inside where the insulation in the attic was softned.

A good vent that is metal and not plastic and an adhesive that doesn't get brittle and crack. Three nails through the top of the vent that will be covered, a nail on each side but not in the metal just use the head of the nail to pinch down on the vent and a little bit of pro flex sealant adhesive. I didn't have a single vent come off during hurricane Irma.

Nothing, no need when rafters are 2' Centers. If they were over that you would secure in some 2x material under the sheathing to support it. One below the hole and one above , right from one rafter to the other.

I have a small shed roof over a powder room. New shingles were installed last year. The worker removed some of the ceiling inside to do electrical work and I noticed how really hot it gets up in the space above the ceiling. Is this vent too large for that small room? The roof area is about 15 feet long by about 9 feet wide. I'd like to vent it myself with some soffitt vents at the bottom

  • @Anonymous-rm6fi

I have a question. I see some people for the first bottom row of shingles overlap the bottom corner of the flashing with the shingles so the corners aren't exposed so the shingles butt all the way up to the vent with the bottom middle of flashing exposed overlapping the bottom shingles. So the water would hit the shingles first, then the flashing, but the water would still run off the flashing onto the shingles at the bottom. Would this work too?

    • @HouseImprovements

my shingles don't have the tar strip at the edge of the pattern, only at the top and I'm where you are in the video with a little going over to the other side. Is that ok or do I need to run a bead of tar or remove 1 row of shingles so I have a tar strip for the cap. Hope you understand that.

I just need to replace the cover and leave the base how do you unlock the top from the bottom so I can just pop in the new covers.

What about if I have a insulated attic with play wood ? What’s my option do I have to take that out in order to have a complete opening into the vent??

Yes, the vent needs an open space into the whole attic. You only need to remove insulation below the opening.

I didn't catch it in the video, but why do you want the bottom lip to be exposed instead of placing it under the shingles as well?
