    My situation was the opposite. Knew where the leak was looking up from the attic, but couldn't find the exact location when I was out on the roof. I drilled a hole from the inside and heated up a piece of clothes hanger and stuck it through the hole. Left the wire hanger in the hole and went out on the roof. Found the area and filled the hole and the existing leaking area with roofing cement.

    I have a leaking porch roof for approx 5-10 years. The boards are original tongue and groove, they might be redwood, but definitely not cedar.
    My whole house frame is redwood.
    I measured the plank width then counted how many are leaking and went 1 more up.
    Need a new roof, but that isn't in the budget this year.
    So I will be on the roof after work tonight to fill in the areas that I think it is getting in.
    We are still in a terrible drought out here in Northern California, as is the rest of California, too.
    One of the interesting things I have applied is a clear UV protective paint from home-depot.
    That is the only part of the roof that does not have any moss growing in between or on the edge of the asphalt shingles.
    I'm losing a lot of the shingle pebbles or whatever they are called, so that helped keep the few on the shingles that were left.

    Thanks for the vid. Am all in favor of white elastomeric roof paint directly on conventional pitched asphalt shingle roofs for patches or do the whole roof. It works well. I painted Home Depot Henry brand/Lowes Black Jack brand (several other brands exist) white roof paint with a conventional 9" paint roller on a stick, least expensive grade directly on my conventional asphalt shingle roof in 2008. Applied about 4 coats to completely seal any gaps, especially where one shingle overlaps atop its downhill neighbor shingle. Used aluminum tape to seal bigger than 1/4" gaps or wherever bolstering needed, such as a protrusion from the roof or where a nailhead appears atop the shingle layer around the perimeter of the roof every 1-2 feet or so, then painted over the aluminum tape with white roof paint. In 2017, 9 years later, it's still going strong. No more missing shingles from wind damage. No more leaks. Much cheaper than a reroof, saves on cooling bills, seals leaks and stops new leaks. Also painted the drip lip around the perimeter of the roof so precipitation touches nothing but white roof paint til it hits the ground. Don't like white? Paint over the white with the exterior grade paint of your choice of color, including the same color as your old shingles if you prefer. As a test, painted an inconspicuous piece of the roof with the date in mid 2015 in a dark color. In 2017, it looks like it was painted on yesterday, with no visible wear. On the elastomeric white roof paint can label, it may say don't apply on shingles. Ignore this if your asphalt shingles are pitched conventional or pitched rolled and aged over 30 days. The white roof paint adheres very well when painted directly on the aged shingles.

    I wish I had seen this before I started removing shingles. Because I am not sure if the leak starts high on the singles and is running underneath to a lower point. I still would have had to do it a little different. There is no attic or crawlspace where my leak is. I would have just had to do this until it started dripping from the ceiling.

    word of advice...do not spray a stream of water at your shingles like this. use the shower setting or something, just like you wouldnt take a broom to the shingles, higher pressure water stream can take away life from the shingles.

    • @xz3693
      @xz3693 3 роки тому +2

      Very true! You have to be gentle with singles. Shingles are not meant for heavy water conditions, and definitely can't stand up to strong wind. Honestly, you shouldn't even have shingles out in the sun without sunscreen and an umbrella. At night you should read your shingles a bed time story like the moron you are.

    Most people can't get a hose long enough or light enough to bring up to the roof of a regular two family house. There's a much easier way.. Wait till it rains. So obvious. When you find it, just punch a hole straight up, climb through the hole, and patch it up.

    • @jjnatteri1245
      @jjnatteri1245 2 роки тому

      Problem with this approach is that leak could be coming from shingles higher up on the roof plane. The water that you see under the roof in the attic may be coming not from that spot but from a higher area. It is no that easy to pinpoint exactly where the water intrudes on the shingle side of the roof

  • @jhonnystroobant6893

    My roof wasn't leaking until I hired the wrong company to install some sporadic missing shingles. Now I've got leaks and can't deal with court. Can't afford a new roof. It only leaks where they installed new shingles. They also failed to bend or tuck and otherwise properly install some bent fascia at the peak. The wind grabbed it and ripped it all down. I took video from inside the attic during some recent super heavy rains, thinking maybe it'll help someone who does the patch job. I'm running out of buckets. I'm not crazy about heights. Is there a way to safely harness myself if I get brave and climb up there myself?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  2 роки тому +1

      Absolutely , you can use a fall crest harness and rope but you still need to get up there and securely attach a proper roof bracket to the peak to hook the rope on, and you need to be able to get up there to hook on and unhook when finished safely.

    So if the leak through the shingle is further up the roof, finding where it's coming through the roof in the attic isn't really going to help is it? I'm hunting a roof leak in my house right now and this is my fear. I have a feeling it's leaking high in the roof, running down on the underlayment fabric and then coming out down the roof. At least it should be in a basic straight shot up the roof from where it's coming through I guess. Wife wants to replace all the shingles because of one little leak that has barely wet the ceiling on an 18" area in living room. 🤦‍♂

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  2 роки тому +2

      It can be tough to track if its running above the sheathing for a bit first then finding a way out. And sometimes impossible. Visually look at vents and pipes and such that are cut through the roof for any place they could be allowing water in, most times they are the problem.
      If in doubt seal around all that stuff well and see if you get it.

      @RPG-oh1yf 2 роки тому

      @@HouseImprovements Thanks. My house has a ridge vent and the leak is about 5 feet outside of the vent. Unfortunately, a garden hose will not generate the same water flow as a heavy downpour so in most cases you will not find the source of the leak using this method. If the roof has a steep slope l would highly recommend to call a professional roof repair contractor otherwise you risk getting seriously injured or make the situation worse.

    This is misleading advice, not a good video, dont go walking on your roof with a garden hose, you might lose your footing slipping on wet shingles. Sometimes there is no safe access to the inside of your attice to look for a leak, you might fall between the rafters, through the insulation, and sheetrock cieling, theres no telling what you might hit in the room. Its a dangerous terrible video!

      karl K, I think you got lost looking for how-to-knit videos. But then you might be concerned about stabbing yourself in the finger.
