I'm a big fan of the Alfred Deller version (which doesn't seem to be on UA-cam). In that version, young Randall leaves his lover (not 'true love') "a rope to hang her, mother." (That comma is really, really necessary!!)

"And wha gat your leavins". What does this line mean, does anyone know?
It means:"And who you got your leftovers", "a chi hai dato i tuoi avanzi"
When I was a child we'd spend summers in a log cabin in Virginia and my mother would play this on a dulcimer and sing. I always loved the word "fain".

studiata a scuola 2 anni fa... cantata così, con la base e tutto, è addirittura bella!! la musica è piacevole e sembra proprio di essere nell'Inghilterra medievale. fatta a scuola è un pacco assurdo e l'ho anche odiata perchè non la capivo xD.. così si che si riscopre il piacere della cultura! non come viene trattata a scuola superficialmente, dovrebbero cambiare il metodo scolastico.. veramente queste cose sono belle ed interessanti, ma le prof o le banalizzano o le rendono noiosissime, perdendo l'attenzione degli studenti.. poi si lamentano perchè non studiamo -.- se ce l'avessero fatta sentire a scuola in questo modo di sicuro l'avrei apprezzata di più
la nostra prof di inglese ci ha portati in laboratorio e ce l'ha fatta ascoltare!!

Io la faccio ascoltare sempre prima di spiegarla, anche perché così i miei alunni intuiscono la struttura senza studiarla ma solo ascoltando e lasciandosi trasportare dal ritmo della ballata. Sono una prof d'inglese (uso l'account di mio marito).
come fai a non capire un testo facile come quello di Lord Randal? Sono d'accordo che sia meglio accompagnare il testo scritto alla musica, dato che la ballata era scritta per essere cantata e non letta, Ma basta dare sempre la colpa di tutto agli insegnanti . Se una lezione è noiosa , è sempre colpa loro , noi studenti ci assolviamo sempre. Lo dico perché sono stato a scuola anch'io e perché mia madre insegna inglese e sono stufo di sentire che gli insegnanti banalizzano., non sanno interessare i ragazzi. Forse la tua insegnante banalizza ma per favore non generalizzare.E poi gli studenti fanno di tutto per studiare il meno possibile, poche balle.

Una delle poche cose studiate a scuola che mi è rimasta in testa... e che mi ha fruttato un bel voto.
A me è rimasta in testa ancora ora (l ho studiata l anno scorso) e, come tutte le cose medievali, la adoro (io adoro il Medioevo). Purtroppo non ricordo bene perché, forse perché in inglese non sono bravo, ma questa ballata non mi ha fruttato un bel voto. Comunque la adoro lo stesso
in realtà è una ballata di origine italiana chiamata Il testamento dell'avvelenato ed era già cantata nel 1500 (citata in un'opera teatrale senese). Dall'italia è arrivata in tutti i paesi d'Europa e abbiamo versioni in tutte le lingue europee (per es. In Svedese Den Lillas Testamente e in francese Le garçon empoisonné)

Una ballata scozzese molto significativa. È un testamento che una nobildonna prende dal figlio mentre di rientro da una battuta di caccia le muore davanti.
Quanta pressione vissuta sulla figura maschile: l'affetto materno si può leggere nel modo in cui lo chiama, ma principalmente il testo è focalizzato su cosa lascia Lord Randal a lei e agli altri due figli.
Ed è anche un avvenimento: se quei boschi scozzesi sono territorio del Popolo Gentile, a meno di sapere quello che fai, stagli alla larga.
Fatto curioso: in Scozia l'animale simbolo è l'Unicorno. ;)

This haunting ballad is an allegory for the fate of young Sir John Randall, 1374-1405, Lord of the Manor Spennithorne, North Riding, Yorkshire, who was beheaded for participating in Percy's Rebellion against King Henry IV. Lord Randall has not been hunting in the greenwood. He has been wounded fighting the king with Percy, and the king's men are on their way to arrest him and lead him off to execution.

Intendevo che abbiamo prove che fosse già cantata nel 1500, ma è molto probabile che fosse più antica. Per quanto riguarda Geordie, la versione inglese dalla quale Fabrizio ha tratto la sua versione, è addirittura del 700 ma il testo più antico che conosciamo è del 500 scozzese.
Perchè, la canzone non ha origini scozzesi? Io so che il testo è stato pubblicato per la prima volta nel libro "The English and Scottish Popular Ballads".
