We love Steven Wilson, and when we gave him that TubeMeister 5 a couple of years ago never could we have imagined it'd have ended up helping define the sound of his new record! This has made our year :) Cheers for the great interview as usual guys, and see you at GuitCon!
Just saw him in Milwaukee a couple of nights ago and he pulled that very amp out for one number. No effects, just the amp and the tele, chugging away on the guitar right after he turned it on to prove that it was a tube amp; "wait for it...wait for it..." ker-chung!!!
I know Steven Wilson says that he's not a "guitar player" per se (he says he's more of a writer/producer), but to me he's one of the most inspiring guitar players out there. The tones and the atmospheres he creates with his guitar to serve his songs are just incredible.
Steven Wilson, in my opinion, is the greatest *current* pop/rock artist. He's second to none. His musicality, lyrics, creative process, performances, and most of all... artistic bravery... never shy to evolve and always true to his vision.
I'll remember this one for a long time. Steven Wilson's music is probably the best thing around right now (and has been for years), so to have him give up a few secrets is magic.
Dude! I would have happily watched a three hour version of this video. Steven's music is one of the main reasons I picked up guitar, and probably part of why I own PRS guitars. Now I find myself wanting a Tele, strangely enough!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Dan & Mick and everyone else who is involved with That Pedal Show... for getting one of my favourite artists (again) on the show! I can't say more, I'm out of words, but I know it's been a long time since I clicked on a video this fast.
I wasn't familiar with Steven Wilson until seeking his music out after a number of references here on TPS. Purchased tickets on a whim and just saw him live this past Saturday in NYC. As a fellow guitarist it was truly INSPIRATIONAL! His tone was amazing; clarity, cut, and just rocking! Big THANK YOU to TPS for all that you do, keep up the long videos that don't skim on context and thank you for the into to Stevens music!!
Such a fantastic interview, Dan. I've been listening to Steven's music for years and years and it is *still* exciting to hear him talk about his processes, sounds, and songs. Now a fellow Tele user, too. Satiated.
Thank you so much for this discovery guys ! I'm in tears after listening to "Refuge" by Steve.. You are so touching in your way of loving and sharing sound and artists and this is big ! Just thank you !!!
steven wilson is my favorite sound creator on the guitar. i love his writing and To The Bone is quickly becoming my favorite album of his. this guy is an inspiration machine. thank you @thatpedalshow for having him on.
This was so cool - thanks Dan and SW! I've been a massive SW fan since the early 2000's and have spent a lot of time following his guitar sounds (amongst many other facets of his career) the entire time.
Thank you Steven for helping me to finally "get" the appeal of a Telecaster. The chord sounds you got from that little H&K with the Tele starting at 5:37 were indeed awesome. And thank you Dan and Mick for having him as a guest.
STEVEN!! I was wondering if you guys would ever have him on the show and I'm so happy you did! By far my favorite current recording artist, and one of my favorite artists of all time.
+That Pedal Show Also I do have to say I'm glad you were able to convince him to switch to the Mini Vent, much better than his Option 5 which I personally never thought was that great compared to some of the other Leslie pedals out now.
Ashley Mann Creativity also comes with technique! Ofcourse, not everyone who's technical is creative, but it's certainly a lot easier to be creative and to find ways to express yourself when your a technical player.
I've been following Steven in a non stalker way since 2001 when he worked on Blackwater Park, fast forward to 2008 when I got to see Porcupine Tree on the FOABP tour at Metro in Melbourne that night was life changing. He just keeps getting better and better and grows and develops and opens us all up to other amazing musicians. Just so amazing!
Guthrie Govan is an absolute Animal on Guitar. Every time I see him play, he is just Flawless, Melodic, with Blazing Speed & Precision. Just purchased Steven Wilson track: Permanating = Great Track. Fantastic. Love it. Thanks for turning me on to this artist.
Thank you so much for making this happening. Steven is such an inspiring artist. Always a pleasure to listen to him talk and/or play music. Well done, mates. Cheers!
Back in 2002/3 I was studying my degree and a college friend wanted to go see Porcupine Tree. I wasn't all that aware of the material but I agreed to go along. I knew all the London Venues, which is amusing as I can't remember where it was now (Astoria maybe?) otherwise it was such a memorable evening. The quality of sound and the band were really great. I enjoyed the whole set and it's a night I'll never forget. I collect all the SW remasters of the classic Prog bands. I've been catching up with old Rig Rundown's, which is what led me to watching this.
In 2013/2014 I didn't know SW and his music. I saw the cover of "The raven..." on Amazon randomly, and ordered the CD because the picture looked interesting. What a luck, I really like his music!
One of the first things I thought upon my first full listen to Steven Wilson's new album was how much I love the guitar sounds he used. Thank you for this awesome show. I'm not even a guitarist and I love watching this.
Hey guys , yesterday i said who the heck is Steven Wilson.today im sayin ,why did i never know about STEVE AND HIS MASSIVE TALENT. Music is now exciting again, i have new old albums to discover. The documentary was awesome.ive never seen so much vintage analog gear under one roof. Thanks Dan And Mick hello, and Steven Wilson
8:11 The Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 5's power amp uses a 12BH7 tube, which is the same power tube used in the Blackstar HT-5 (which is a hybrid amp, well beyond the TubeMeister 5's use of diode clipping) and the Marshall DSL5C (the only amp of the three which is does not use solid-state distortion generation).
Love that he makes such great tones off a "cheap Mexican tele." You don't have to spend $2-3000 on a guitar to get play guitar. Even something people may consider a starter guitar can be great with practice.
Proof that even a cheap guitar and a practice amp can yield incredible sounds in the right hands. Well Done Steven! I'm looking forward to seeing you again soon!
Awe..too short. I could listen to Dan and Steven Wilson go on about his sounds for hours. In Absentia was and still is an album I listen too when looking for inspiration. Great video. On the length of videos though. I've noticed some folks complain about the long format. But I would vote that I look forward to the longer videos as it's like a tv show I tune into every week.
As long as you get the proper nutrients. Eating a balanced diet full of what the body needs is more important than where the proteins come from, I believe.
Steven Wilson? Yes! Punk rock Joe Strummer Tele? YES! Name-check for Andy Partridge? Y E S!!!!! Please, please, please persuade Mr Andy P onto the show. & Dave Gregory. & Colin Moulding. That'd just be ... XTC ... for this TPS fan.
If it's a question of getting the right cake-based incentive to entice Mr Partridge onto the show, I'd gladly provide ... though sounds like there's possibly just a bit more to it. Shame! Will happily listen to you interviewing a solo Dave Gregory - might prove a tad easier to arrange.
Nobody seems to remember that James Brown also designed the PV Classic (30 - tweed covering) series amps too - he is an amazing designer and seems to be a heck of a smart guy to boot! It is about time he gets his due for all he has added for his contribution for some of our best, even affordable gear - he doesn't seem to brag himself up all the time.
Now watched it in full. Brilliant, thanks fellas. The man is a stone cold genius and the latest album is the same as all his other work: fantastic. I'm also stoked to hear that Alex Hutchings will be playing with him. The dude's a monster. Come to OZ Steven!
Great!! This guy busts out with the Mexican Tele and a practice amp and blows minds. Luckily we can all blame it on his amazing pedalboard and continue on with our lives. :-)
Thanks so much for turning me on to Steven Wilson. Discovering new-to-me artists is another perk for subscribing to TPS. I acquired a Fender Telecaster Scorpion that has Lace Sensor pickups, which I do not like. I have plans for installing a P-Rail Seymour Duncan bridge pickup. If the guitar isn't suitably Tely enough, then down the road it goes to make room for a good Tely.
I have been listening to Steven Wilson's music since Friday night. Really good stuff - innovative and diverse. Dan, you must get a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction from listening to your work in the hands of someone so capable.
Weird- I've been raving about my Hughes and Kettner 18watt combo since the day I bought it and one of my main guitars is my stock American Tele, which I also rave about. The combination of those two is fantastic.
24:55 happened to me in Madrid. I went to the concert alone cos I had just moved to Madrid and I didn't know anyone yet who listened to good music, let's say.. And I find myself crying - a bit embarrassed cos I had just made new friends at the concert. I look around and everyone's crying!
Steven Wilson, on a TELE! This is gold! Big time fan of Steven, great to see him getting more widespread recognition these days.
Pauuuulll of course you are the type of dude to watch this epic show, considering you are epic yourself
Um... he's only one of the most influential prog guitarists/singers/songwriters in the world?
And here is the great orange tele guy watching another great show! Cool
And what a beautiful Telecaster it is.
Remembering when he used to play a red stratocaster in the 90's
We love Steven Wilson, and when we gave him that TubeMeister 5 a couple of years ago never could we have imagined it'd have ended up helping define the sound of his new record! This has made our year :) Cheers for the great interview as usual guys, and see you at GuitCon!
+Hughes & Kettner Awesomeness. We shall see you there! Looking forward to catching up. :0)
But, can't find the damn amp for sale anywhere, especially in DK. Can you help? :(
Just saw him in Milwaukee a couple of nights ago and he pulled that very amp out for one number. No effects, just the amp and the tele, chugging away on the guitar right after he turned it on to prove that it was a tube amp; "wait for it...wait for it..." ker-chung!!!
Love my Tubemeister 5 head and 110 - now I just need a MIM Tele and Steven's creative mind ... :)
I know Steven Wilson says that he's not a "guitar player" per se (he says he's more of a writer/producer), but to me he's one of the most inspiring guitar players out there. The tones and the atmospheres he creates with his guitar to serve his songs are just incredible.
+83draconian No arguments here. Much awesomeness indeed!
excellent excellent rythm playing.
he's terrific. was just rewatching the "arriving somewhere but not here" live... his solos are great.
I can't believe y'all got Steven Wilson on the show! This is why this is my favorite UA-cam channel!
+Victor Campos yep, was awesome to have him on :)
Steven Wilson, in my opinion, is the greatest *current* pop/rock artist. He's second to none. His musicality, lyrics, creative process, performances, and most of all... artistic bravery... never shy to evolve and always true to his vision.
"Shplang." A perfect description of the Telecaster sound in one word. Also, the name of my first child....
+Geoff Davis hahahahah
Hand Cannot Erase is a life changing album. Such a strong record.
I'll remember this one for a long time. Steven Wilson's music is probably the best thing around right now (and has been for years), so to have him give up a few secrets is magic.
+E.G. Systems He's great isn't he? Not remotely rock star-y but 100 per cent committed artist. We love him. :0)
Dude! I would have happily watched a three hour version of this video. Steven's music is one of the main reasons I picked up guitar, and probably part of why I own PRS guitars. Now I find myself wanting a Tele, strangely enough!
+Trizza84 Hahaha!!!! Excellent. We say this without fear: every guitar player alive should own a Telecaster. Good luck!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Dan & Mick and everyone else who is involved with That Pedal Show... for getting one of my favourite artists (again) on the show! I can't say more, I'm out of words, but I know it's been a long time since I clicked on a video this fast.
OMG! THE Steven Wilson! You guys are super awesome you got him on the show!
this is their second pass with him. check out daniel's channel...he was on a few years ago during the Raven tour.
Yeah, I know Dan featured him before on video from SW's tour but having him in the room for an interview is a different level of achievement ;)
Excellent point.
Fu**in' had the honor listening to Steven Wilson jamming different sounds at the end. Great show dear Heaven
+Gil Sela Thank you Gil. It was indeed a pleasure. :0)
21:07 "I just think some people are musical... and I guess I'm one of those people." -Steven Wilson
I like the confidence.
He's always been extremely confident. I honestly think it can be a bit off putting, but his chops and music back it up.
DomSchu I actually find him rather humble given his undeniable genius.
It's confidence without the arrogance.
If he's not musical by now, he never will be, eh? ;)
He frequently says he is the worst musician on the stage at his concerts. He is phenomenally good at writing a song, though.
No fucking way, I swear to god I've never clicked on a video so fast in my life. Let's go!
I didn't even know him before this video. Now he's my hero. Such a great musician and songwriter.
steven wilson is my favorite sound creator on the guitar. i love his writing and To The Bone is quickly becoming my favorite album of his. this guy is an inspiration machine. thank you @thatpedalshow for having him on.
This was so cool - thanks Dan and SW! I've been a massive SW fan since the early 2000's and have spent a lot of time following his guitar sounds (amongst many other facets of his career) the entire time.
+Kaleb Burkhart Cheers Kaleb - great to have you along!
Dan's Tele conversion of all guitarists has begun!
He must be saving Mick for last.
Steven Wilson. This has already made my day and I haven't watched it yet.
Favorite Artist + Favorite Show = Pure Orgasmic Happiness!!!
My thoughts exactly!
*happy draconian sounds
Steven Wilson : The Best music of these 20 last years !
Thank you Steven for helping me to finally "get" the appeal of a Telecaster. The chord sounds you got from that little H&K with the Tele starting at 5:37 were indeed awesome. And thank you Dan and Mick for having him as a guest.
Can't believe I missed this show. Steve is one of my favourite guys ever. I am totally in awe, Dan. Thank you.
What a lovely chap. Thank you all for sharing a delightful conversation. Keep up the good work.
"If you live long enough, strange things happen"
beautiful!
STEVEN!! I was wondering if you guys would ever have him on the show and I'm so happy you did! By far my favorite current recording artist, and one of my favorite artists of all time.
+WillieWonka928D Excellent! Hope you like the video!
+That Pedal Show Also I do have to say I'm glad you were able to convince him to switch to the Mini Vent, much better than his Option 5 which I personally never thought was that great compared to some of the other Leslie pedals out now.
New album is BEAUTIFUL, what a legend. Props to Gavin Harrison as well, monster of a drummer. Hell, Barbieri is incredible too, what a band.
I love the way a no-theory guy like Steven Wilson commands guys like Guthrie and Alex Hutchings :) Creativity always beats technique
Ashley Mann Creativity also comes with technique! Ofcourse, not everyone who's technical is creative, but it's certainly a lot easier to be creative and to find ways to express yourself when your a technical player.
Better technique = better tools, definitely. But ideas are a different thing. I think they come, like Steven said, from listening.
Ashley Mann yup! Listening is the best tool ever.
Steven Wilson is amazing, but let's be fair. No-one commands Guthrie :) he just happens to be perfect in every situation.
He doesn't command them, he hires them for their incredible abilities - creative and otherwise.
Nice king Crimson shirt Steven, that live album is my favorite.
Thank you so much for this!! One of favorite artists talking about his craft in one of my favorite shows, couldn't ask for anything better!
+Pedro Barbieri you're so welcome Pedro, honoured to have him on :)
When can we expect an update on Dave Kilminster's board now he's back with Roger?
I've been following Steven in a non stalker way since 2001 when he worked on Blackwater Park, fast forward to 2008 when I got to see Porcupine Tree on the FOABP tour at Metro in Melbourne that night was life changing. What an amazing Artist....musical genius and a chamelon of sounds. Thank u for your visions Steven !
Friday was a good day TPS interviewing Steven Wilson. Which made me go to local HMV that evening and buy To the bone on Vinyl. Cheers Mick and Dan.
One of the first things I thought upon my first full listen to Steven Wilson's new album was how much I love the guitar sounds he used. Thank you for this awesome show. I'm not even a guitarist and I love watching this.

One of the very best interviews I've seen in my life.. humbling, educational and moving...
+Adam Hauk ah, that's so nice, thanks Adam :)
This is the absolute best collab that could ever happen on youtube
Marvelous. The legend Steven Wilson meets the legends at TPS. Only 30 mins tho 😭
Thanks. Just watching over a mid day coffee and biscuits. Congratulation to Steve on the success of the new album.
Damn Alex Hutchings will be touring with Steven, can't wait to see that !
Thanks Dan for explaining what you felt with 'Routine'! Spot on!!
+MrEstpas71 yep, such an overwhelming experience

Damn, I love Steven. He's my fave musician ever.
Dan here, was listening to To The Bone yesterday, and Raven is one of my fav albums ever, yeah, he’s incredible
When I heard Steve's new album, "Pop" was EXACTLY the word I used, but it is mighty good pop. It is an excellent album.
USA here... never heard of this guy... One of the reasons I love these vids..
+Vibro Steve ah, cheers Steve :)
Proof that even a cheap guitar and a practice amp can yield incredible sounds in the right hands. Well Done Steven! I'm looking forward to seeing you again soon!
+Chip Dunn yep, I love his guitar playing, he's a beast :)

Looking damn good for a man about to turn 50
Ollie King Lives off his passion, doesn't have kids. Doesn't look like the type of guy who abuses drugs either. (I have kids. It takes its toll)
holy shit he looks like he is in the late 30's
As long as you get the proper nutrients. Eating a balanced diet full of what the body needs is more important than where the proteins come from, I believe.
oh yes, just look at steve howe for a proof of that LOL

The HK speaker sim stuff was developed by Tomas Blug (Bluguitar) -
I use the BluBox cab sim live - best sound I've ever had.
Because of watching this video when it first came out I have just come home from seeing Steve Wilson live in Auckland, New Zealand. Great show!
What a nice way to come down from my week. Thanks Dan. Thanks Mick. Thanks Steven.
+cotepj tore very welcome :)
15:33 Pog and tight rock , WOW ,what a sound !
Awesome! Steven's music is amazing. Thanks for asking about the band for me - can't wait to see the tour next year!
Gran sonido y que sorpresa ver a Steven Wilson con una Telecaster!!
Great video, very insightful! cheers for using my question!
+Connor Baxter Cool - thanks for asking it Connor!
Steven Wilson is the man! the new album is amazing work from a genius mind.
You got the guy with the face for the tour!! Alex is a great guitarist and a really lovely guy!!
Simply awesome. Just looked him up on Spotify after viewing this video.
O man if you guys could get Guthrie Govan or Dave Kilminster in. I would watch that every day till the end of time.
Dang, he is almost 50? Looks like 30
That is because he's not married...
@@sergioelgueda7298 Hey Steven got married this year and problably he colors his hair..... just saying
They stay out of the sun in England!
@@brittoncarpentry we don't have a choice 😂
Thank you ,TPS, for turning me on to Steven. Wow!

It is about time he gets his due for all he has added for his contribution for some of our best, even affordable gear - he doesn't seem to brag himself up all the time.
Steven is my hero, this is amazing. I literally gasped when I saw this!
This is officially my favourite video on UA-cam.
Fantastic video, my favourite guest on the show by far.
It's Christmas in September!! The Pedal Show episode I would have requested if I thought it was even possible. So psyched you would cover this!!
Now watched it in full. Brilliant, thanks fellas. The man is a stone cold genius and the latest album is the same as all his other work: fantastic. I'm also stoked to hear that Alex Hutchings will be playing with him. The dude's a monster. Come to OZ Steven!

+Snydermans Music It's all in the patch cables...
Just heard Steve Wilson, Dan, Thank you!
Love the show guys! I have never heard Steve Wilson and listened to the new album. Superb guitar tones! Love the music.
"Over the last 30 or so years."
I just realized how damn gracefully steven has aged, man's 50 and he barely looks in his 20s.
So, what I got from the whole studio-sound vs. live-sound, it's that: less is more.
... But how can less be more? More is more!
+Niels Beier YES! A little bit of Yngwie always cheers us up!
Awesome awesome episode. Totally genuine. The real deal.
+stevieboy444 Exactly how we feel. Thanks for watching!
OOoOOOOHHHHHH!!!! MY GOD!!!! this is true???? Absolutely EPIC!! Thanks Dan!!!
Seeing Steven Wilson in a King Crimson shirt makes me want to weep with joy

What a great tone. When you mix the Badcat with the little H&K it sounds fantastic. Makes me want a tele. 10:04
Two of my favorite things putted together!!! I never clicked so fast
Splendid, splendid, splendid! As a SW fan and a BadCat user this was perfect. Thanks v much.
This made my day and I've yet to watch it, going to see Steven in Amsterdam in March, can't wait!

The emotional reaction to music is a special thing, some never experience it. Marillion's Neverland live does it to me too.
