Fix a Toilet Fill Valve That Keeps Running

- If your toilet won't stop filling or it's hissing, the fill valve may need to be flushed free of debris. This short video shows you how to clean out a Gmax fill valve (made by Korky), the Gmax is very similar to a Korky QuietFILL. The fill valve is this video was hissing and leaking. After flushing it out and cleaning a few key parts the problem was fixed. Save yourself some time and money, try flushing out the fill valve before you replace it or call a plumber.
Two tips to fix valve if it is leaking: Pry up the rubber disk on the float, flip it over and reinsert in onto the float. Buy a replacement cap, the red gasket often fails Both Korky and Toto make them. Korky R528 or Toto THU302 fill valve replacement cap. They cost about $4.

Thanks so much for speaking clearly, at a moderate pace, and not rushing. I also like how you paused and pointed to parts.
Thank you!
You are welcome!
My toilets were pulsing water when it almost reached the top of the water tank line making the pipes continuously bang. I followed the video and found debris in each of the filters. I washed all the parts and assembled it back together. Now both toilets work with no issues. This saved me some money in replacing the parts or calling a plumber. Thank you!!
You are welcome. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I always enjoy hearing from people who watch the videos.
There need to be more videos like this. Edited to be clear, concise, and to the point. Compare to the first video I found which was over half an hour and spent several minutes just on the first step covered here in maybe 15 seconds...
I try to respect your time. UA-cam wants you to spend more time watching. I suspect we are both punished. It's hard to get the videos to the top of the search list so you can find them.
First video I watch didn’t show taking off the blue lid. I was lost, mine was old, hadn’t been cleaned in god knows how long. Lots of mineral buildup.
simply awesome explanation at good slower speed speech. Very recommended for even similar systems.
THANK YOU!!! As others have mentioned, it was great to watch a video that was quick, to the point effective how-to-video with out all the long drawn out narration.
Hey David, thanks for the praise. The goal of the video is to be quick, accurate & informative so you can solve a problem and move on to doing something that is more fun than repairing a toilet :). I now have over 100 videos, so please support the channel and subscribe... it's free.
EXACTLY what I needed. I followed the instructions and noticed that the cap for the toilet fill valve was torn. I was able to find a replacement at ACE and along with cleaning out all the pieces like you recommended (and they definitely needed it), the toilet was fixed! You SAVED me! Thank you for putting this video together!
You are welcome, Leilani. Thanks for commenting, it's nice to hear from you. Way to go on the successful repair.
Great video. I like your style, you get right to the point. Lol so many videos are 35+ minutes to explain what you did in well under 5 minutes.
Agree, the other channels it seems like they have to tell you how awesome they are for 20 min. before they tell you anything that would be helpful. These are great videos !!!
This! All the information you need, explained clearly, in under 5 minutes.
Thank you. Do you know how many stupid videos I had to go through before I found this simple cleaning solution. This was exactly what I needed.
You are welcome, Brent. I do my best to never waste your time. Sadly, You Tube doesn't always put the best quality videos at the top of the search page. If the problem returns, you can try replacing the cap with the rubber seal. If ever needed, there is a video on the channel that shows how to replace the valve too.
Thank you so much for this easy and quick video. My toilet runs like new. I started watching another video by a guy that was over 35 minutes long. I could only watch that for about 20. Thank goodness I found this one. I had my toilet repaired in about 10 minutes.
Thank you for the EXPERT video. You included steps that aren't in my Toto owner's manual that made it possible for me to get the fill valve off and apart, cleaned up and functioning properly. Fortunately, the Korky replacement valve in your example is identical to my original Toto part. Removing the supply hose to get the valve out, cleaning the filter and the little ball at the bottom of the float tank aren't even mentioned in the Toto manual. I'm so glad I found your excellent video, I wouldn't have succeeded without your insights.
You are welcome, James, it's my pleasure to help. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I enjoy hearing from people who watch the videos.
Thanks! It took 15 minutes and worked exactly as you said. I had debris on the seal and now it's all good. Made me feel "like a boss". 😎
Hi Jon, it's great to hear that cleaning the valve fixed your problem, now you can go out for a paddle in your kayak.
I have to say I love this video! I watched 4-5 others before finding this one and found the confidence I needed to try fixing my toilet. It was leaking a little and hissing. I was pretty sure a good cleaning might be all it needed. I never thought I would be up for a disassembly job like this, but your slow, detailed explanation and good visuals made it look easy. I read comments and knew I needed to be careful taking the tube off. The tube was really stuck, and I was a little scared to be too hard with it. And honestly, I'm a bit of a weakling, too. My solution was to see if I could pop the cap off with the tube attached, and that worked. It was a tad tricky getting the cap back on that way, but with some patience and a few prayers, it worked. Now my toilet is working perfectly and is silent. So happy. Thank you so much!!!
You are welcome Robin. Thank you for the thoughtful comment.
I watched several videos but yours was the most concise and to the point. I also read a lot of the comments and picked up more points. To say the least I was well-educated by the time I saw yours. The point I learned from yours was the cupping your hand over the top and turning on the water to flush debris out. Great job.
Thanks for the compliment, Jim. It's great to hear the video has been helpful.
Perfect How-to video with very easy and concise instructions! The whole process took about 15 minutes! Thank you very much for saving me $150+ in plumbers fees! 👍
Hey Jessie, you just made my day. Thanks for the compliment. I have other repair videos on my channel and will be adding more on a regular basis.
Agreed. Perfect video. Some other character here has a bumbling, 45
minute version of this that couldn't be less concise. Nice work.
Thanks!
Oddly, when I went to fix my couple-year-old Toto earlier today after watching this I turned off the water, and flushed, but needed to pee so I turned the water on again. After the tank filled the running water noise was gone. I have a feeling the water pressure was on higher than it needed to be and it was actually forcing excess water into the system because simply adjusting the flow volume seems to have ended the problem.
Wow two much 150$ i will leave saudi and working plumber and electrician in us
Thank you so much for your comprehensive step-by-step instructions without a lot of blather. I fixed my hissing/leaky toilet by myself and I couldn't be happier!
You are welcome, Terri. Way to go on fixing the noisy leaking toilet!
Lady, you just saved me a ton of money. Your instructions were clear and easy to follow. Thanks a bunch.
You are welcome, Chris. It's my pleasure to help. Have a great day.
Many thanks for this quick video, I was going to completely replace but decided instead to clean it based on your video. Works like a charm now!!
You are welcome, Karl. It's my pleasure to help.
Thank you so much! With your instructions it took me about15 minutes from start to finish, and you saved me having to purchase a new valve.
You are welcome. I always enjoy hearing from people who watch the videos.
This was so incredibly helpful! Well structured and concise, and you demistifyed this kind of valve system for me. Bravo.
It's my pleasure to help, Armin.
WAY better than the 35 minute video with 20 ads that someone else posted! Thank you!
You are welcome, Matthew!
Thank you SO much for making such a clear and concise video for this issue!! My toilet had been hissing and acting up for a long time, and then when I flushed it at 1:15 am the other night, it wouldn't stop running. It took a little while to find any videos with instructions for the same pump mechanism that I have, but then I found yours, which was - by far - the best! Your instructions were super clear and easy to follow, and your video showed each part and each step of the process. All in a nice short package. Thank you for making this repair so quick and simple! I was afraid I might need a whole new part, but this fixed the problem in a jiffy!
You are welcome, Dyan. It makes my day to hear that the video solved someone's problem. I do my best to keep the videos short, accurate and informative. Thank you for taking the time to write a kind note.
This helped me save my valve! Thanks for making it concise and obvious. Mine was running, and of course I first replaced the flapper and couldn't believe it was still running! Even though I have a different (and apparently somewhat unique) valve, most everything you showed applied to my situation. Once all the sand and crud was brushed out of the thing, it worked great.
Thanks for the compliment, Darell. Good you were able to use the concept from the video and adapt it to fix your valve.
Great video. I'm going to try this. I have to hand it to Korky for making this thing serviceable at so many different spots. I assumed I was going to have to buy a new one.
Great advice and excellent video showing the steps needed to clean the valve. My valve was stuck due to iron accumulation. All it needed was cleaned out. It is working great now. Thanks for the advice and great video to accompany it!
Thanks for the compliment Hugh. It always makes my day to hear that the video was helpful.
Thanks so much for your detailed instructions. I took the fill valve apart and noticed that the plastic part of the cap that the tube is supposed to fit over had cracked off. I ordered a new cap online from home depot, picked it up and was able to reassemble the fill valve without a hitch. No more hissing or running water sounds. The repair cost me $4.
Hi Lea, It's always great to hear the video was helpful. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm sure your experience will be helpful to someone.
Thanks very much! My Toto toilet was not always refilling after flushing. Cleaning the fill valve as per your instructions did the trick - we're back in the business of doing our business!
You are welcome.... great! You are back in business. lol!
I was stymied at even getting the cover off. Watched your video; set to work; it took less than two minutes and NO more leak. Thanks!
You are welcome, Kathy!
Thanks for the vid! While the parts weren't totally the same, I was able to resolve my leaky point with the help of this vid. Thimbs up!
That's great, you were able to solve the problem! You are welcome, Leslie and thank you for the compliment. Please consider supporting the channel and subscribe, it's free, and it will allow me to continue to add more videos.
I dont know if this will fix my problem, but if it does, a million thanks in advance, this has been driving me crazy for months!
Thanks to your succinct and clear video we just fixed our leaking toilet! Thank you! Also your accent is great!
A plumber came by and said he needs to replace the fill valve for the new toilet he just put in a month ago! He was supposed to come do that today. It didn’t make sense to me so I found your video and problem solved. Thank you for this video.
You are welcome, Juan. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I always enjoy hearing the video has been helpful.
This is the first comment I have ever left. I have replaced my toilet kit so many times but I just fixed my toilet because of your video. Thank you so much!
You are welcome, Joshua. Thank you for the compliment.
Your gift just keeps on giving. Filler valve would not shut off . Your video saved me a replacement. BTW, I fully believe the problem was from using one of those "blue tablets" in my tank which created a lot of gunk, likely clogging up the filler valve.
You are welcome. It's always great to hear from people who subscribe to the channel.
I dislike the chlorine pucks. It warps and destroys the rubber components. I stopped using those chlorine pucks and 99% of my issues went away.
I live in the country and just "shocked" (chlorine) my well and plumbing to the house. As a result of the shocking, lots of bits came off pipes, etc. One of my toilets ended up have its bowl continuously filling. So, after watching your video, in a matter of ten minutes, all was fixed. Moreover, the toilet bowl now fills more quickly, since I expect I had debris previously in the valve. Great video!
Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, Hugh. I love when people write thoughtful comments, it adds to the value of the video. Have a great day.
Good editing. Short and to the point without a bunch of unnecessary comments.
I do my best to make quality videos that don't waste your time. Thanks for the compliment.
Great video. Fixed my toilet in about 20 minutes. Less time than I spent watching other videos on the same topic.
Hey Rich, good to hear the video was helpful.
Put in a water softener this past Saturday. Then toilet stopped working mysteriously. We knew that sediment had been stirred up and went through the system and then went through the toilet when our son inadvertently flushed it with te water off.
Your video walked me through the steps PERFECTLY. I cleaned a lot of sediment out of the tube and filter. Now it works like a charm!
THANKS!!!
You are welcome, Scott. It always makes my day to hear the video was helpful.
Thank you just did this, took less than 8 minutes. No more leaky toilet! From NC Thank you.
You are welcome, David. It's my pleasure to help.... from PA.
Mine was constantly adding water, I thought it was the big gasket on the flush but this video showed me how to fix it, thank you!
You are welcome.
Worked great !!!! Thank you
You're welcome!
Thank you for making this video! I followed your instructions step by step just now, and they worked perfectly. It was like you were right over my shoulder telling me what to do. My hissing, running Toto has been tamed! I look forward to checking out your other videos. Cheers!
You are welcome. Thank you for taking the time to comment with the kind words and for watching the videos. I am always trying to improve the quality of the videos. The newer ones are a littler smoother than this one.
Thank you! Followed your lead and now my Toto Flush System is working again :)
You are welcome. Thanks for taking the time to comment and the kind words.
Chris Sanz-Agero Exactly this!
SPOT-ON....This solved the problem of continuing running water in my Toto fill valve, thanks for the great video.
You're welcome
Amazing video! Finally repaired my "broken toilet" that i did work arounds for years. Thank you!
You are welcome, Jay!
Excellent video. Easy to follow all the steps. In my case the strainer had debris which I washed out and after replacing all the items back the water filled perfectly and stopped continuously running and overflowing.
Thanks so much. I've replaced over 25 fluidmaster vales in my day but have never fixed a toto toilet before. Easy to follow video without having to go to the hardware store. Worked beautifully. Thanks
You are welcome, Daniel. Thank you for watching the video and taking the time to comment. It's always nice to hear the videos have been helpful.
Wow that was great. Totally fixed the problem...had to replace the rubber gasket $4 part at Home Depot as it was not sealing anymore. great instruction and video .
You are welcome, Bryan. Way to go on finding a solution to the problem and a successful repair.
Well done. I followed the steps and the valve now works perfectly. Note, the top cap did not twist very smoothly off or on, so I applied some silicone to the twist tabs to allow it to lock in easier. That seemed to help with that step. Thank you for the great video.
Thanks for taking the time to comment and the tip.
Thanks for the detailed video. Wish I had seen it sooner. We had another problem though, it would not fill continuously, it would stop, fill, stop, fill until it was full. Just a note for anyone reading, the off the shelf fill valves do not refill the bowl properly on low flow toilets.
You are welcome and thanks for the compliment.
Wow that’s the best instructions I have found for this. Thanks a bunch!!
You are welcome. I try to make good quality videos. The newer ones are a little more polished.
Thank you! You got straight to the point with no b.s. AND you solved my problem by suggesting I flip over that rubber disk in the float .
You are welcome, Karen. I enjoy hearing from viewers and it always makes my day know the video was helpful.

Brilliant~! Amazed at how this video got right to the point and fixed the problem in 15 mins. Thank you so much. To think I was about to replace the entire valve. Sheesh.

Thanks for watching the video and the compliment, Stew.
Was heading out to the hardware store when I thought I would see if there was a UA-cam video explaing how to fix the problem first. thanks for sacing me a trip and the time and expense of replacing the valve!
You are welcome, Ed! FYI - if cleaning doesn't solve the problem, you can buy a replacement cap & gasket.
Thank you so much. My husband thought it was the flapper, but I thought differently. Guess what, I did what you showed in your video and the toilet works just fine now!!!
You are welcome. Good to hear the problem is solved.
Great video! This solved my problem when everyone else told me to replace the whole valve.

Just saved me a trip to the hardware store and/or dealing with apartment complex maintenance. Had some old gasket pieces keeping the gasket from sealing and fully closing the valve. Thanks for this video.
You are welcome. Good to hear that it fixed the problem.
Thanks so much for the helpful tip! This fancy toilet was a bit intimidating and I was ready to call a plumber. However, with your video, I was able to fix the problem in less than 5 minutes! Keep up the great work!

Thank you for this concise and informative video. I'm hoping this resolves my issue instead of having to replace.
Thanks for the compliment Patricia. If flushing out the valve doesn't fix it, you can try replacing the cap or if you choose to replace the valve I have a video that shows how to change one out: ua-cam.com/video/Szq1RnxWpSs/v-deo.html
Yes. Great clear instructions with clear visuals and straight to the point. Thank you!
You are welcome!
That worked perfectly. Thanks for posting. Saved me money and a big box trip.
You are welcome, Ronald. It's always nice to hear the video has been helpful.
Thank you! This fixed both of my toilets! Easy to follow instructions. You saved me a ton of cash!
Super! You are welcome.
Thank you, my fill valve is an older, slightly different style but the video was all the help I required. The cleaning worked for now.. I ordered a replacement fill valve to be safe. I have three TOTO toilets so it's probably wise to have a spare on-hand.
You are welcome, Stephen. Thanks for taking the time to comment, it makes my day to hear the video has been helpful. There are replacement caps available too (if the valve isn't too old, I'm sure the rubber gasket at the water inlet to the tank will eventually deteriorate too). Search for "toto toilet fill valve replacement cap" to find them. Have a great day.... in our new weird world.
Excellent video. Just a few tiny flakes of rust in our valve was enough to cause the hissing and overflow. Thank you for making this an easy one to fix.

Thank you!!! This fixed it immediately - UA-cam University for the win!
You are welcome Graham, it's my pleasure to help.
Thank you very much for this helpful video. My DIY is not good, as I broke off the rubber hose on the first step from the plastic housing. I still proceeded to take apart the fill valve, and the step where you take the long 6-inch insert out from the inside of the fill valve is indeed full of debris with a piece of wood splinter in there. That no doubt is causing it not to shut off the water when the tank is full. I have super glued the part back to the housing, will see if that holds when I re-insert the rubber hose. Thanks for your video.
Sorry to hear you had a little collateral damage Calvin. If you have to replace it, I have a video that shows how to do that. I'll put the link below or you can find it by clicking on the channel name. ua-cam.com/video/Szq1RnxWpSs/v-deo.html
Thanks for this very clear video! I went through the process smoothly. Unfortunately, though it slowed the leakage, it didn't stop it. I noticed that the rubber seat on the float had deteriorated, and figured that this was a likely cause. I couldn't find anybody that sells the float as a separate part, so I bought a whole new valve at Home Depot ("Genuine Toto Fill Valve by Korky"), removed the cap and the float from the new valve and replaced them in the old valve. They fit perfectly and it now works fine. It was easier than replacing the whole valve, and these seemed like the only parts likely to wear very much.
FYI, Korky makes replacement caps. If they didn't have them at your hardware store, buying the valve works. Paying for the gas to drive around to find one of the caps might cost more. www.korky.com/products/fill-valve-replacements-accessories/replacement-cap-assembly-fill-valve
An excellent, clear, detailed, and complete video. Very well done! Thank you so much.

Thank you!! This was very quick and easy after attempts from other UA-cam videos. My toilet is fixed!!
You are welcome, Carole. Way to go on the successful repair!
Thank you! Worked like a charm and easy. No more hissing and overflowing.
You are welcome, Frank. It makes my day to hear the video has been helpful. Please consider supporting the channel and subscribe.
I loved your video. . . concise.
I mistakenly thought that the "tab across from the float-bowl" was a latch.
So, I didn't want to force it.
It was just a keyway, and the part lifted as easily as you performed it in the video.
You should be a technical writer. I am.
Thanks for the compliment, Stew. It's a honor to get it from a technical writer. I do my best to keep the videos concise, accurate and helpful.
Short and sweet, and it was very well done. Thanks. Hopefully it did the trick.
THANK YOU!!! NEW HOME, never seen this valve and these steps were easy to follow. Still getting a bit of a hiss from the gasket but will keep trying to clean it.
You are welcome, Sam. If it is still hissing after cleaning, you can buy a replacement cap with a new gasket for $4-6. Look in the box below the video for more information. Also if replacing the gasket does not solve the problem, if you have a pressure reducing valve, perhaps it has failed. I have videos about pressure reducing valves and how to check your water pressure. Click on the channel name to find them, they are organized in playlists. If you subscribe, you will easily be able to find the videos again.
Thank you so much, this worked for my 10 year old Toto toilet that was leaking water and making annoying whining noises in my primary suite at night!
You are welcome, Ingrid.
thank you for being precise and to the point, I got my water to stop the continuous running after cleaning out the calcium build up.
You are welcome, it's my pleasure to help.
Thank you for the quick fix. Your video has the perfect angles and was straight to the fix.
Thanks for the compliment, it's always nice to hear the video has been helpful.
Thank you! Very informative. Love the Korky fill valve and other of their parts, but was wishing it was easier to clean of water deposits. Had no idea top diaphragm twisted off! Perfectly allows access to clean all internal parts. Mine was super tight, wouldn't have tried twisting without confirmation like this. (No mention in Korky's original instructions?!) Anyway, thanks again. Incredibly helpful.
I recommend soaking in a water deposit cleaner, desolver (like CLR) if you have very hard water, and scrub with toothbrush. Have to regularly clean things like faucet aerators around here. Probably should install water softener...
You are welcome, Thomas. Thank you for the kind words and for taking the time to share your method for removing hard water deposits.
This worked on toto model as well. Thank you for all your help!
You're welcome, Matthew.
To the point and very helpful. Solved my hissing/small leak.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, David. It's always good to hear the video has been helpful.
Great job and Thanks so much. My valve was fixable! I'd just say that removing the hose was harder than I thought it would be (probably should have warmed it up a bit) , my unit had no "tab across from the float", and finally the replacement of all parts could have been better documented. The 1/8 clockwise turn took a LOT more force than it took to get it off with the counterclockwise turn for some reason!
My difficulties were probably due to the unit being dry for many months before I worked on it. Thanks again!! Great , helpful video.
You are welcome. Thank you for taking the time to comment about your experience with your fill valve. I think there are some slight variations on this type of Korky valve, though they are all similar.
Great video. Very easy to follow and done at the perfect pace.
Jack, thanks for the compliment.
I had a different valve Model (WDI), but same concepts applied (mostly). I found other videos where I tried to adjust my water height but it kept running. This video stopped the running leak. I'm guessing it's the part where you flush out the tube with your hand over the pipe, since my parts were pretty clean when I took everything apart. GREAT HELP!
You are welcome, Scott. Yep, you got the concept, small pieces of dirt/debris can cause the valve to not fully/properly close.
Once again you are right on time.. and always on point.. and always on the money! I have had this problem but just didn't know what to do.. was going to call the plumber.. no need to now.. I can do this!!!! 😄

This worked for me! Thank you for posting this video. It was concise and easy to follow.
You are welcome, Michael. It always makes my day to hear that the video was helpful.
Excellent video, thanks so much! Really glad you showed re-assembly as well.
You are welcome, Janet!
Had a similar problem. Watched your tape and took it all apart. There was something stuck in the green plastic "thingy" that slides inside the tube. It looked like light green plastic residue. Anyway, thanks for the video. Cleaned it and it is running perfect.
You are welcome, Richard. Thanks for taking time write a nice note.
You saved us a visit from our plumber and our girl’s Halloween party this coming weekend! Thank you!
You are welcome!
4 and half minutes to watch video 3 to do the work and my problem is fixed.
Thank you
Mine is Toto branded system but other than that it was same process.
You are welcome, Edward. It's good to hear the video solved the problem. Korky makes the valves for Toto.
