My favorite Moz song ever , when it came out i couldn't get enough of it, same for Viva Hate ,it still had some Smith quality way before his adventures in rockabilly ballads and being lost in a Brit Pop world
Top of the Pops was THE UK pop music show since it began in 1964. Broadcast once a week at prime time on BBC1, it attracted approx 15 million viewers in its heyday. Sadly it ended in July 2006, a victim of the internet & mulit-media age perhaps?
I had no idea that he was still on good terms with Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke in 1989. I guess it makes sense since Rourke was on some of his solo albums.
This was already after his first solo album had been released. Rourke and Joyce were on a few singles with Morrissey but never on an entire album together.
@@markofsaltburn mmmmm I’ve been in so many bands…. I highly doubt you can be a band with someone you’re not on good terms with. You could maybe hold on for a few shows or album or two. But not start a fresh project haha
This song is so beautiful and special to me. It is definately one of my old time favorites, I listen to it everyday and over and over for years now and it is still as great as the first time i heard it. LOve U MOzer!!!!!!!!!!!
Rourke and Joyce were not told about the signing of the contract (intentionally by Morrissey) as a result the contract only had Morrissey and Marrs signatures - which meant that when the money was divided people who thought they were equal members of a band suddenly realised they were only musicians.
It surely didn't go over their heads that they did not sign a contract. The contract was signed by Moz and Marr cause they were the essential members of the band.
This is a living legend ........ Morrisey is simply one of the greatests artists ever. He´s a choosen by god one. Nobody sings like he does and he has that perfect attitude to music. Nobody has contributed more to pop rock music in the last 20 years. He´s still better than lots of new bands like kaiser chiefs franz ferdinand and muse, keane etc...
Great visual performance from Morrissey as ever, but I wish the BBC had let him sing it live. I'll forgive them, though, seeing as it was performed on 9th February 1989, the day I was born :P
i remember mi sister avin this performance on vhs. first time i saw it remember thinkin how good. no goin back now, never looked back since.VIVA MOZZER! bless ya mate.
And The Smiths wouldn't have been the greatest band there's ever been without Morrissey. And actually for the most part Johnny and Morrissey got on really well.
It's true that, it's mainly Joyce that Morrissey has problems with. He and the others just don't talk much as they're all really busy with their respective work. =) I'm sure they talk occasionally...(I'd hope so. Especially Marr and Morrissey.) Joyce and Morrissey though, I'm afraid of what would happen behind a locked door with those two. =| Lots of unresolved bitterness.
I'm pretty sure Vini didn't play on this song. I think it was Craig, Mike, Andy, and Stephen as his backing band on the "Playboys" and "Interesting Drug" singles (wish it would have stayed that way).
"...I hope they put their differences aside and reunite before heaven forbid one of them should pass..." I agree with you but if you know Moz a little, you know that it is never going to happen
Morrissey still wanted Marr to come back to The Smiths as far as 1990-91. Moz only viewed this as a side project while waiting. But then the other "Smiths" didnt get paid fairly on this track and a few others and decided not to work with Moz anymore. Then Moz teamed up with Boz, and the Smiths royalty issue all but ended the reformation.
Seen him on 23rd December at the G.Mex. Hope the Mozfather is still gigging in 30 years. Pure genius and ultra sexy. Wish he'd have played this and Suedehead though! I forgive you Mozzer :-)
yknot10 I would rather eat a giraffe then work again with the people I worked with thirty years ago, and I'm sure Morrissey feels the same; he certainly doesn't need the money.
He he he!Quarry was voted by Morrissey fans on his main fans website as his best album, so you are obviously part of the clueless minority which you refer to. Viva Hate got the best critic reviews, and is regarded as being the closest to the classic Smiths sound. Lastly, there are a number of average/filler tracks on Vauxhall and (particularly)Arsenal, but I won't list them as it is subjective and I doubt you would agree.
Yes, I was referring to the morrisseysolo website. I can't say if people voted twice, I wouldn't.When Ringleader was released, there were mixed reviews by fans on that website and many said it was a let down after Quarry (a view I share). Obviously other music mags gave other ratings. I would agree with you, Vauxhall is a cracking album.
you know what's funny? Morrissey performing with Andy and Mick, but instead of Johnny they brought Craig...and I was thinking: ok, The Smiths splitted, and you brought Mick and Andy to play with you...was it so damn hard to bring Johnny aswell and reunite The Smiths?!? I don't get it :)
more lip syncing!! No... no .... no... it can't be true. Still, best song he ever kicked out. The band I played in covered it, with a much harder edge. Fans loved it!
I gotta tell ya, honestly, that I don't see lip-synching as a bad thing either and for the very same reason. This extends of course to the music as well as the lyrics.
I've just covered this song for the 30 Day Song Challenge. Moz is one of my lifetime heroes! Note: Morrissey and Rick Astley were both performing on this same episode of Top Of The Pops, and they met each other in the backblocks afterwards. They got on well, and someone took a photo of both of them smiling for the camera and in 2014, Morrissey used the photo for the re-issue of this song because a photo of him with David Bowie got rejected by Bowie. I shit you not. If you want to hear my version of this song, check it out here at: ua-cam.com/video/qwuuWqRD1tU/v-deo.html
why did rourke and joyce leave morrissey. i know moz has an issue with mike maybe even with johnny, but whats andy rourke done, andy must have been called to give evidence but does moz have an issue with rourke. sum1 enlighten me
Tykes TV Because Johnny wrote all the music. And nobody can play those guitar parts like Johnny. And essentially he was the one who formed The Smiths. He went to Stevens house, and he brought Mike and Andy. Not The Smiths without Johnny, even more so than Morrissey.
+Tykes TV Craig Gannon is a great guitarist. But Craig Gannon does NOT write music like Marr. It wouldn't sound like the Smiths without Marr writing the music.
marko galetin Andy wrote ALL the bass parts which are a big reason the songs are as great as they are. Mike created amazing drum lines on his own, too. Mike auditioned to be in the band later. Johnny didn't bring him in with Andy. Stephen Street played a massive role in crafting their overall sound as well and went on to write, play on, and produce Viva Hate which was as good in parts as anything Johnny did in the Smiths. In fact, even more accessible musically. Johhny was great but he was only one part of it all.
@@christyjia8449 Well it kinda soundd like The Smiths with Stephen Street writing the music... and Yes I Am Blind was written by Moz and Rourke, and it's great as well. Could have worked.
moz, i does love ya and enjoyed the biog...but why a good few solo career singles in was there this smiths pt 2 look: the vitriol for CG, MJ and AR.....justfied probably....but had forgotten how long all 3 were still part of the solo career....esp in light of that vitriol in the book
Now I would have to say. The Smiths you were fucking mental and thank you. But if Craig Gannon who can play the guitar very well, came into my group and said the smiths were shit, I would have to say, Craig, NO. The Smiths have been here for a while before your guitar playing skills, we were here before and will be here after. Your efforts are noted but I have to say no again.
I went & bought a very unsimilar shirt as this the day after this was on tv. Sill think this is about his best totp performance. Of course he's miming. It's 1989! Isn't Andy's shirt & Joyce's suit ridiculous? Anyway.
Welp. Those are some of his classic and timeless Morrissey dance moves that he'll occasionally pull off nowadays. Instead of his famous shaking of the ass during The Smith's era.
I'd never seen S.M. do an interview before 2 days ago and all I can say is, while his music and lyrics are top drawer his personality isn't. What the hell happened to him over the last couple of decades?
Dear Stephen; When are you GOING to give me that sodding green checkered flannel shirt back? I mean, Blimey, it's not like a bloke is able to just go out and buy one of those rarities anywhere, you know. I left about a thousand quid in the pocket and it bloody well better still be there!

Everywhere I go all I hear is Cray, Cray, Cray!
Yes he did this song is from his second album bona drag .
Was Craig Gannon playing guitar there?
Were ALL TOTP performances lip-sync? Sounds exactly like the studio version
The bands had to record a version of the song they were performing in the BBC studio , usually the day before recording the programme.
Last of the famous That was the original Musicians Union requirement, but the changes were frequently so negligble as to be unnoticeable.
That is possibly the funniest sentence I have ever read, real art!
If Moz never gets over Joyce and Marr, he should at least get back together with Andy Rourke the past is behind them both.
yknot10 I would rather eat a giraffe then work again with the people I worked with thirty years ago, and I'm sure Morrissey feels the same; he certainly doesn't need the money.
