It's absolutely amazing that there were teenagers in the early 90s who were brave enough and evolved enough to go against the current dominance of grunge and alt rock at the time, and instead voted for Moz's musical journey.
Usually, Morrissey would conduct an interview like the interviewer and the fans are too obtuse to get him. But in this case, he was talking to endear himself to the fans. I think he was taken aback at that time of his sudden American success in the early 90s.
haha when the girl asked how he feels with the crazy fans running on stage to hug or touch him and she says she's one of them lol.. i've never been able to see morrissey perform that close up, but i will one day and i'll run up there and hug him and just die in shock haha
That question about poets Sylvia Plath and Ann Sexton blew me away. Today you'd get questions like, what did you have for breakfast or something completely brainless.
Definitely, and I was surprised to see him not speak admirably of Sylvia Plath. Her works run so parallel to Morrissey's own views and personality (loneliness, depression etc) but perhaps that would be the reason he doesn't find it interesting as it is a life he knows too well.
i was 12 i very vividly remember seeing the video for ' Tomorrow' and I was honestly truly i swear- taken away. Very few other people made a difference as much as Morrissey and very few people really struck me! I was a very enamored 12 year old gal and I am still enamored. ♥ tks for this
The Pianist Perhaps you have never had the experience of being part of a studio audience..where you are given cues to applaud.. :) There is even cues to laugh..and for other reactions. It is just part of Hollywood. Lots of love to you...from America.
Coming from people who thought Benny Hill was funny? There are 80 comments about us Americans clapping at this guy? How about being flattered that he is popular?
A lot of comments about how it's weird that the audience is clapping, and it that's because it is. BUT, and TV tapings in America, there's usually a, "Rally guy" who kind of directs the audience to clap or even have an over-exaggerated laugh anytime the guest says something. This is so the viewers at home has the impression that the studio wants transmitted.
I would NOT have been able to maintain my composure let alone eye contact with this beautiful man staring right at me whilst licking his lips and grabbing his jaw that way.
1:33 awwww cute. She puts her hand on her best friends shoulder because she is nervous infront of her idol 🥰. Where are they today? Are they still friends?
One day I shall go see this Man at one of his concerts and run on stage and give him a hug and kiss. I’ll run over security in a formative manner and respectful apologize after.
The music he made while in the Smiths was better and they go down as one of the most influential bands in British history, he's not really in a band with these people and nobody really knows who they are, they're more like a backing for him than a band
Understanding and being ok with the fact he's the way he is, is an act of respect. But the ones who have any problem with his behavior might be second guessing him.
Totally uncomfortable situation for Morrissey for sure! This is when stupid MTV made singers and bands go along with this ridiculous round of questions in order to please the kids in the audience and to make the singers or bands look "nice". If I love Morrissey and The Smiths back then, aside for his awesome music, it's because of the man's brutal honesty. I'm sure that If Morrissey had had the chance to speak his mind out right there in the middle of the show, he would've said, "I enjoy making music with the band and I'm happy to perform it love but, honestly, I can't stand the way the music industry and television networks expose artists in America... It's annoying, irritating and quiet stupid".
"if 'this' had existed at the same time as the Smiths, I would have preferred 'this'". bollocks Moz, you can't bullshit a bullshitter. 'this' isn't even a real name!!
Basty Elwood Cobain I'm 100% sure that was the reason. He talks shit when no one is around, but not in front of them. That's the thing about Morrissey xD
Whoa!!!! If anyone could write about that feeling Morrissey created growing up it would be Sylvia Plath. Her poetry was a perfect expression of art, as you don't have to take it in the context with which it was written, in her world, you could read it flatly and in a more artistic way, and this is not true of all poets, only the best. And if anyone was Smiths like I would imagine Oscar Wilde and Miss Plath. Plath for her versatile writing dynamic that is often underestimated and Oscar Wilde because of Morrissey holding a bunch of lupins in his back pocket being the devilish romantic plucked from suburbia up on stage - someone said he was the greatest lounge singer there ever was - and it's true!
I adore morrissey with all my heart but he is absolutely kidding himself to say he prefers this band to Johnny Marr, he adored Marr and probably didn't want to admit he always will adore Marr. No one can replicate what Marr and Morrissey did together, anyone could be in his solo band
All the fans cheering when he says he prefers the new band to being in The Smiths seems odd considering they're all probably Smiths fans. Then again, he could burp and they would whoop and cheer.
I think in some ways he must have preferred new band because the smiths were always working under extreme pressure from British music press which must have made for stressful working conditions. With boorer etc the pressure was off a little.
the bit about him preferring this band over the smiths is a load of bs. the rest of the smiths put Morrissey on the map and without them, he might still be renting a room in Whalley Range... seems a bit disrespectful to throw that chapter of his career out the window. But then again his band was sitting right there so there wasn't really anything else he could say.
The 'rest' of The Smiths? Sir, Joyce and Rourke did fuck all. I think you mean Marr. And where would Marr be without Morrissey? Teaching guitar lessons at a local studio I suspect.
Murakami R He's always very honest. My favourite album's of his career are since Your Arsenal when Boz took over the band& onwards, but his first two are great too. What a load of bull dude, to hear Morrissey slap The Smiths like that really is tragic. I read his Autobiography and realize the amount of shit he went through with Mike Joyce and all but still, just because of all the drama doesn't mean The Smiths were this band that he couldn't give two shits about.
I absolutely adore watching Morrissey interact with other human beings. He's just fascinating.
Because he is very charming and shy at the same time 🙂
Thats called LIFE WITHOUT THE INTERNET.
i love that he smiles at himself and poses when they start clapping and cheering.
It’s hilarious
now i can’t unsee it LMAO
That's cute bc he is clearly happy

3:17 such a great question in my opinion, she seems like such a clever girl.
There were some great questions there overall.
Her name is Jodi , my darling friend... she is what you said , and more. It was a wonderful day for us , my dear suedehead sister❤
Morrissey always gives the best answers. It is incredible.
Morrissey said something... hesitation... CLAP CLAP CLAP

Morrisey-never beats around the bush, gives straight answers and loves his fans
This band here was extremely important for him in terms of being able to carry on as a solo act.
