- Craig Gannon was asked to join The Smiths in early 1986 after the band had fired bassist Andy Rourke. Having already made his name as a member of Aztec Camera, he soon became the band's second guitarist after Rourke was re-instated and recorded many notable singles with them.
In this interview Gannon discusses joining the band, working on the 'Panic' and 'Ask' singles, going on tour in both the UK and the US with The Smiths and the reasons for his departure from the band. He also discusses his later work with Morrissey after the Smiths had split, including the singles 'The Last of the Famous International Playboys' and 'Interesting Drug'.
I've known Craig for about ten years. He's a really decent guy. He's doing well writing successfully for film and TV. He's very down to earth and just a really nice guy. He's studied music for years and he's very intelligent. His musical tastes are very varied. An example- I'm a big lover of 'classical music'- not the type played by classic FM; more the stuff on Radio 3.he loves what I know to be quite difficult composers such as Stravinsky and Bartok. I saw the Smiths with and without Craig. Anyone who also saw them with and without him, would say they were at their best when he was in the band. As a guitarist, he's a real guitarist's guitarist,
Was Marr threatened by Craig Gannon’s ability? That would explain why he was sacked.
"I was in a band called Aztec Camera". Yes, ve've heard of them mate.
They sounded great live with him
Craig seems like a really likeable fellow. Its a real shame the Moz/ Street/ Gannon/ Rourke / Joyce lineup collapsed. There was so much promise there.
Yes! It was working! I know rourke says it wasn't but some great tracks were coming out of that set up!
Agreed. Street wrote some cracking tunes and Rourke showed a lot of potential with the stuff he composed.
Morrissey couldn't abide such
@@sexobscura Not true
Yeah it would be a like having Billy Preston or Ronnie Wood...that extra player balancing the madness
To play like AR you'd have to be; well; AR. He's the best ever.
Was. He didn't get the recognition he deserved, and this is the saddest aspect of his death.
Gannon is my favorite Smith. Call him the 5th Smith, that's fine, maybe he is, but he's my favorite one of the lot. Too bad Moz didn't carry on with him much after he went solo or too bad when Whyte left the band that Moz didn't invite Gannon back in the band. Better than that American Tobias guy.
My favourite Smith is their original roadie. The 6th Smith as he was known.
Have you watched Morrissey first live solo show where Craig Andy and Mike backed Morrissey after Johnny quit ?? Craig's playing might have been the answer why Morrissey didn't stick with Craig, No offence to Craig but he was not in the same caliber as Johnny.
Haha well if Gannon was never a fan I can see why he was not in keptt on.
@@breathspray But they needed him for the live shows that the songs wouldn't be so quiet and he could play the overdubbed guitar from the record.
He looks like a cross between Nigel Mansell and Steven Seagall.
Is there an all in one video?
Gannon is wonderful ♥️
This is a really old interview.
they did not need another member. craig was the odd one out.
hes so fine
Você era importa te para os esmithis
No he wasn't he played on a few songs and made a suit case full of money.
Coked up.
💀
Not impressed with Aztec camera
Aztec Camera is criminally underrated. Musicially speaking, some of their stuff is as good or even better than the Smiths, in my opinion.
Probably because they sucked.
They’re good
@@cardigansarecool High Land, Hard Rain is a fantastic record.
It's okay, they can live without your support.
*You are no longer a part of the band - Morrissey*
He had more problems with Marr
