[Saxxy Awards winner, 2012. Best Drama]
Thank you for Everyone who Voted for this and helped it to succeed. I believe the bulk of the credit for this video should go to Lars for his amazing music composing. His songs are always such that I dont even need to think, the video just flows from the music. Thanks to sarcasmosaur for the awesome vested medic, and a secret thanks to Norpoify, who posted up the DMX for his short "Patient" which served as the original file basis for this video ( though extremely modified and torn apart). I'd also like to take a second to tip my hat to Soimon , with his entry "story of a sentry". I believe that a video only needs to do one thing well to succeed, and in my opinion, his amazing characterization of the sentry outshines any single element in my video. Give him some love and respect, that guy has fantastic instincts and I think he deserved to win too. you can check out his entry here.

One of the top complaints I've gotten about the piece, is the little bit of violence at the end being too cartoony, which I agree with, but the way it is now just has a special place in my heart, and I couldnt bear to change it.

Before I knew this video existed,
I had adopted a dying baby chicken, as a Medic fan, I named him Archimedes.
It was flooding outside, his mother had stepped on him and left him to drown, I saw two little feet sticking up from the mud, and I ran out and saved him.
Archimedes came to me by fate, in a time when I had no one, he didn't have anyone either. I took him in, and he became my best friend..
5 months pass, he'd never fully recovered from the event. He didn't want to socialize or leave my side.
He was surviving, but he was so depressed. He just wanted to sleep on me.
Last day,
He looked up at me, he had such big dark brown beautiful eyes, unlike any chicken I've seen, and just looked into mine, and he looked so sad.
I realized, he'd been holding onto life for me, and how damn selfish I'd been.
I held him under my chin (his favorite spot) and told him
"You don't have to stay.."
He died in his sleep five minutes later, but those last five minutes he spent peeping quietly, nuzzling under my chin.
So now on shuffle, this video pops up, and brought back the memory of how badly I wanted to keep Archimedes with me, and the pain of accepting I had to let him go.

I believe what's going on is that the Medic is grieving over his lost friend. To escape the reality of their death, Medic uses drugs to escape the truth. But the memory comes back and the Medic is spilt into two. One Medic wants to enslave the memory and grieve over their friends death forever, the other wants to let go of the friend and enjoy the times they had. This clash results in the "evil" side taking the friend, displaying that medic can't let go over the death. He then tries to attack the "evil" side of him to free the memory, which is Medic trying to move on. But then the "evil" side grabbing Medic and about to drop him down a clif, this cliff is depression and Medic is about to go into depression over the death. Then the thought of his friend and the good times comes back to prevent this. After killing the idea of enslaving the memory, Medic then enjoys the time with his friend and let's him go.

If watch carefully, after the Medic loads the syringe with the bad medicine he places the nearly full jar next to two other jars that almost empty. Based on that observation, this was not the first drug trip that the Medic took to reunite with his beloved pet. However, this drug trip quickly turns into a bad one.
My interpretation is that this drug induced encounter with Death is the last drug trip the Medic ever takes since the Medic has finally accepted his pet's passing.

The bird mask medic probably doesn't represent death it self but instead the medic himself holding on to archemedes like a bird catcher and defying his struggling to let go of Archimedes but eventually fades away as the medic was able to say goodbye to Archimedes sry if I sound nerdy :P

no, basically medic took some weird drugs and the reaper is basically his conscience/grief about Archimedes. when he kills the reaper it's his acceptance of his birds death

I discovered this when I was 12 or so. I'm 20 now and just revisited it for the first time in years. To me, it's an icon of a simpler point in my life when creators like Jerma and Star_, VenturianTale, and Stampylonghead were my go-to's for entertainment after school. It (and your other portal themed videos) was one of the first fan-made SFM movies I ever saw and introduced me to the weird and wonderful world of Gmod/SFM machinimas. I love this video so much and hope I can revisit it for many more years to come.
I've seen this SFM so many times and I've just now noticed that when Archimedes brings the Medic back the amputator, the rain in the background freezes. And once he kills the reaper, the rain returns to normal before disappearing entirely. Amazing attention to detail.

I just came back to watch this after so long. I recently had to put my cat down after 8 years of having her, and I shed a tear watching. An amazing story, especially if you've owned a pet
This makes it even sadder considering that there are many people that consider the Medic a sociopath.
He takes pleasure in inflicting pain (sadism) and sees people more of test subjects (objects) than human beings.
Sociopaths also tend to push people away from themself and are almost incapable of feeling empathy or love. What often makes them complete outsiders.
Meaning that Archimedes is probably the only living creature that he actually loved, and the only being that loved him back.

Sheepling I watched it, and honestly it didn't even come near to this video, the length and music in this makes it more profound, the other had some meaning but it wasn't the same by far.
I think this one is freakin' good I mean, you see the time he put in it, it's very good but actually my personnal favorite is team experience (the first one and the remake both are good) everything is awesome in team experience he touch is hat paf the "ghost" of the demo appear this is the kind of deatails I love because it means that the one who did this animation is really passionate (don't make me say what I didn't said this one has good thing like that too)

In my opinion, this short video is an evaluation of anger itself. The medic was angry because of a failed experiment seen in the first part of the video. He takes a drug to escape, but finds that his negative emotions have followed him. He fights against his past failures and bad memories. He is overcome by grief, ready to give up, when one happy memory brings back his will to fight. In a single, swift stroke, his anger peaks as he lets go of his past. He succeeded in killing the beast, but the beast was always himself.
His bird died, and he tried to revive it with his medicine, that he knew didn't work, so he took large amounts of it to kill himself to be with his bird :(
I dont think that is correct. You can see he has already used large amounts of this medicine. Maybe it puts him in a false death state which he wakes up from again.

I've watched this over 12 times now.
Best SFM of all time. It's so realistically animated, from the way the Medic's hand shakes as he pounds the table to his expression when he first gets high, it's amazing. The music is top notch, and the story is unbeatable.

I own three dogs, all of which I love very much. I cry like a fucking child every time I watch this video, it reminds me that death is always around the corner for small, fragile creatures such as the ones I own, and that the hardest part is not losing them but letting go of it all, as displayed in this video. It makes me appreciate my beloved dogs so much.

i know it years ago when i still had my cat (he was already 16 ) i remember my mom telling me that they were going to finish him off cuz his intestines were not working anymore and i sat there hugging the cat crying all the time saying why (i was around 9 years old) and the days after that i couldn't go to school cuz i was so sad and could only cry sometmes i still have to cry

I think that the Medic felt that living without Archimedes meant nothing.
Mixing a lethal agent with a hallucinogen allowed him to fantasize a little about seeing Archimedes again. But Death quickly interrupts his little dream as his body gives in sooner than he thought. Having that little fight with Death allowed him to be with Archimedes just a little longer, until he finally rested on that tombstone one last time.
And people want that "Pop it, Don't Drop it" taunt in the game. "sigh"

Somehow this music still starts playing in my head from time to time and I know it's because of this video I saw almost 8 years ago.
I've tried destroying my emotions after so much betrayal, being left behind, my family falling apart, friends disappearing, world events that have effected my life, I had tried to become heartless.
Last year that three of my gf's pets that I'd known for three years and loved had passed in a span of four months, I had so much hate and anger in me but little did I know that I would become human again from loving them. I may not feel the emotions but I know I have them and people can see them.
This video has reminded me of my journey being human, I never knew that after nine years since I watched this video that it would remind me of my shattered humanity. God bless this video.

Your alternate ending on the first video makes for a much better quality version. Having the Solemn Vow show Do No Harm is a great emotional feel, whereas this the chopping of the plague doctor's head was so blunt and unexpected it was almost comedic.
It really fits the medic's playstyle of Do No Harm to have him heal the Plague Doctor, and it makes sense. Because the bird was caught in the cage, yet still handed him the blade?
Please, reconsider mixing your alternate storyline with your finished product's style.

i used to watch this all the time as a kid and i thought it was really sad
as an adult it is amazing honestly a lot of the 'older' sfm and gmod pieces for tf2 are so well done, the lighting and poses, all the scenes are so good
Honestly kind of yeah. Putting the medic particles on the invisible bird model so I could animate it felt like a really high end trick and I dont know that I ever saw anybody ever attempt it. I think when everything is harder to do, solutions become more creative, and this was the wild west early days of SFM
Same goes for alot of early TF2 pieces, and especially Gmod pieces that have to get even MORE creative.

First time I saw this, I was in tears of how emotional it was. This is still my favorite SFM out of all the others that have been made, simply because of the sad nostalgia it brought, and how relatable it can be in any situation, really.
