Why I Hate Holidays

- Holidays are meant to be peaceful and joyful. However, to some others and myself, holidays tend to be more of a chore than an enjoyment. I feel that most of them exist to boost the economy and to rekindle the supposed "broken morals" of people. This video will explain why I feel like many holidays are pointless and explain why some people choose not to celebrate them.
Keep in mind I'm in the United States, so some of the holidays mentioned may not apply to other countries as much.
If you celebrate holidays, I respect you, but know that people who don't celebrate have their reasons.

Tom Millard dude I love Halloween too because that's the year I could scare all the little kids and scarr them for life after trick or treating in my house trust me if you hate that those little twats are asking for candy even though their parents could buy them fucking candy everywhere for less than a buck then dress up as a scarecrow go outside the front door and buy a bucket full of candy put a sign that says take one when a brat puts there hand inside jump up and scare them trust me it is going to be funny and by then no one will want to trick or treat at your house.i do it every year

there’s a lot of festivals and holidays here in Cambodia, it stresses me out sometimes but at least there’s no classes.
I like how the one holiday that didn't get shat on (rightfully so, might i add) was Halloween. Free candy, Horror flicks on every channel, dressing up in costume, scaring and or pranking people, it's a metalheads dream, what's not to love! I wish every day was Halloween

Finally someone said it! Personally I hate holidays too and I really don't want to celebrate Christmas or Easter but I'm forced to because my parents are conservative Christians (and I'm still 17 which is considered underage). So they basically force me to go to church and participate in various Christian family traditions and events during the holidays, because if I don't they say that I'm not a part of the family and they get extremely mad and upset :[

***** I've already done that so many times that they have literally said that they will kick me out of their house if I keep sharing my thoughts and believes in front of my younger already brainwashed by my parents siblings. (They on the other hand are constantly shoving their beliefs down to my siblings throats just like they did to me). So I'm afraid it's not just emotional blackmailing...
***** Oh I didn't know that. I'm sure they wouldn't go as far as to throw me out though anyway as they're generally good people. They just aren't very open minded and accepting.
Well they certainly aren't perfect but they are doing a pretty decent job at raising their children. They could be better and more open minded but they could be a lot worse.

I hate people who get angry at "merry Christmas" or "happy hanukkah" and say "happy holidays". I don't give a shit what holiday you celebrate but you can at least respect the fact that other people celebrate different things. Im a christian but if someone says happy Hanukkah to me ill say it back, because that shows respect to he other person beliefs.

In Serbia we have a holyday when parents tie their kids up as soon as they wake up and refuse to let em go until the kids give them gifts(there is also one when kids tie up their mother and father)

Though yesterday was my birthday. As much as I don't really care as much as I did when I was younger , I never really saw the harm in asking off for work. Just coincidentally, there was a meetup event and Goatwhore was in town.

Between you and me, you may have just changed my perception of holidays, even my own birthday. I have to say, if I hadn't been given this much insight about how holidays really aren't all that special, I would probably just be another one of those slaves to the economy, and always having a happy face during all those other holidays. Right after we celebrate being grateful for what we have on thanksgiving, the next day people go out and trample each other to get something for cheaper

Dude I didn't know the historical reasons for instituting Thanksgiving as a holiday until I saw this video. I always knew the actual history between the pilgrims and the indians, of course. But holy shit wouldn't the holiday serve a better purpose if we were closing stores and enjoying peace and quiet with our families if the purpose was to meditate upon the ending of America's bloodiest (and in a way the most tragic) war or to have a closed-store/no-work day as a big moment of silence to remember that we nearly brought an entire race to extinction.

i agree that holidays have become very soulless and mechanical, especially Christmas. it's supposed to be the happiest time of the year but all i feel is stressed and depressed.
I hate April fools day as well, and only hate Valentine's Day when im stabbed in the back, which usually happens around that time to be honest. But I get what you're saying man good video

honestly my least favourite things about holidays is having to act surprised/excited when i get a gift, like i can be extremely excited but i feel like i need to play up some crazy reaction or else ill be seen as disrespectful, then theres also the issue of having to buy gifts for people when you're broke. holidays would be so much better if gifts werent so "necessary"

I 100% agree with everything you said :) Just get rid of all holidays and have businesses offer paid time off in points throughout the year. That way businesses can remain open all year round if they wanted to. If you want to celebrate your holiday, do it on your time, don’t force everyone else to have to be affected by it.
Another great post. Let me start with a disclaimer by saying I'm a 50 yr old geezer guy, so been through plenty.
Holidays are great for appreciating Family. If someone seriously has had a bad upbringing and their Parents are spawns of Satan, then, by all means, avoid that toxicity. However, if your Family is just the typical, sometimes annoying type People, Family does matter and Holidays at least give us an excuse to be together, even if mildly forced at times. With many if not most Family members, you will find that they are the only ones that won't bail on you, especially during the toughest of times and you get older. Both my Parents passed within the last 5 years, and I miss spending time with them over the holidays, and living away and out of state from home the last 25 yrs, wish I had made more of an effort to spend time with them.
One of my Siblings is the complete a total opposite of me, but even he has stepped up and had my back during some really tough times, even though when it comes to religion, politics, and other bullshit, we agree on nothing, and never will.
As far as the rest yeah, mostly marketing scam. And as far as combining Holidays, I *especially* agree with a combo of Mother and Fathers day because Dads get totally screwed. As a Father of 2 myself, during my Kids young years, schools would make a point to take the time to make some super sweet and touching cards/handmade gifts/hold luncheons/singing programs etc. for Moms because of Mothers Day taking place during the school year.
Dads, on the other hand, get none of the great stuff. Not even ashtrays like we used to make in Art class during the 70s for our Parents before it was taboo, and that's some bullshit. Probably contributes to the fact that Fathers day just becomes 'another day' for Dads much quicker than for Moms, even if the Dad was the best or only Parent of the two.
As far as me personally, I now just take Holidays as a time for introspection. Not all holidays mind you, but certainly ones like Thanksgiving. Not because religious fanatic Dudes in funky hats, but because I'm not dead yet so there's something to be thankful for there, and when I take a bit of time, I can always come up with a few more reasons. And I get one day off of work to think about it.

8:10 is true to me. I have homophobic and racist grandparents and being bisexual I find it uncomfortable sitting in the same room eating Christmas turkey and I've walked out of the room multiple times because of their non-tolerant behaviour.

My birthday is on April 12th. Since it is early April some people associate it with April fools day and I get pranked on my birthday. I don’t want to be pranked, just let me go through my day peacefully and THEN prank me in a few days. I think birthdays should just be days where you respect the person who’s birthday it is. Family and relatives are different things. Family are the people that mean the most to you, the ones you love and the ones who love you back. Relatives are just the people your related to.

I can agree about hating holidays. There is so much tradition. Learning about them or not learning from them is up to the people involved.
When i was a little kid, i really loved christmas. Now, i’m not as excited. The main reason i actually like christmas and new year is that i get to see extended family. Other than that, i just like a 2 week break from school.

i have 2 other people who share the same birthday as me, one being a year older, one being the same age, and it was really hectic one year because the girl whos the same age as me had invited me to her birthday party on our birthday. it made me feel kinda underpowered because we were celebrating HER and not ME and HER.
I agree with all that was said in this video but I also think if holidays were celebrated freely like you said where if you don't feel obligated to be apart of them then you don't have to be and aren't shunned because of it and also to celebrate the holiday the way it was actually meant to be celebrated but that mostly just applies to religious holidays and more or less basically Christmas and Easter, I mean I barely see anything about Jesus during those times anywhere and I live in Texas lol but that's just my opinion love your vids man
