Mosh Pit and Stage Diving Etiquette

- Moshing, stage diving, the climb of life, the wall of death, and crowdsurfing are all fun, but there are unwritten rules that should be known. The important thing is to watch what's going on around you and stay in a good mood among other things. If I missed anything, please let me know in the comments!
always remember the most metal thing you can do is respect women
scarlet friend
Unless you’re at a Mentors show
While I don't think I would do something so impulsive and potentially dangerous today, this happened at an Anthrax show when I was young: I wasn't anywhere near a pit and some rando grabbed my ass.
He gave me a watcha-gonna-do-about-it creepy look and I went to deck him. But I missed, and punched a beer out of another guy's hand.
I apologized and offered to buy him another one. But he said "Not needed- worth it."
Respecting women is heavier than Slayer
Joshua
I've been kicked in the balls by a woman in the pit just for pushing my way through to get in there. Only pussies say excuse me and tap people on the shoulder. At that point was GG Allin time.
imagine respecting wom*en
Don't open up your packed lunch and start eating it in the pit.
All THESE RULES!!
but what if I share it?
Unfortunately I feel like that's happened before at some point in history 😔
aww man what's the fun in mosh pit now
Laughed so bad at it 😂 ffs who would do that
*me slowly becoming an metalhead and figuring I should know how to mosh*
“If somebody accidentally breaks your nose, they probably don’t mean anything by it”
Those words take me home.
Yess😂
You're probably like one of those chicks that carries around a skateboard and doesn't skate.
@@triggadre1930 lol
You forgot no Karate in the PIT.
Austin Dotson Con-f*ucking-formicide!
[[Insert Name]] HAVOK!!!!!!!!!!!
I think Jhoff already covered that!
Ya not at death metal more like deathcore hardcore. Please let the put evolve into trik pits like full on no touch ninja!!!!!! Just make 3 pits the middle slam dance in the middle crazy ninjas in the back and trik pits in the front ;)
Austin Dotson true
I did my first mosh pit 30 mins ago.... i have never seen that mutch respect in violence. Every one was protecting those who lost something or fell on the ground. These are my people and every one was respectfull of each other...... god dam i love metal
☯
I know this isnt a metal concert but i remember i went to see the Foo Fighters and this big almost 200 pound looking dude some how got on stage and went for the stage dive and the crowd said fuck that and parted like the red sea. dude belly flopped on to the concrete floor. he somehow only broke his nose and that was the funniest shit ive seen at a show
But 200 is not even heavy xD Though, I remember when I was at a concert with folks, we lifted my 60 kg friend for crowdsurfing, no problem, but then we (it was probably me) tried to do the same with my 90 kg homie, it wasn't any problem to get him up, but others couldn't keep him in the air xD
That sounds hilarious
Once got into an Annihilator Moshpit, two guys fell on me ( im very small) and my cell phone broke!
Another guy helped me up and pulled me out of the pit.
The other ones gave me my foldable water bottle and refreshed me with a shower of cool water, metalheads are the coolest guys ever!
Damn i'm Little too and try to stay away from the pit but this statement made me Wanna try hahahaha
@@mreddyfeelgood Hey if you want to try you can just minimize the risks by keeping in mind what he said in this video.
But also maybe store all items that could break/hurt you/ immobilized you/ could be lost or whatever before trying to get into the pit. This will lower your concern for sure.
And most importantly: Have a glance at the general atmosphere and the people involved. Does it look fun to them or are they just pushing each other around in a more brutal manner? Does it look like people are about to fight?
And of course, how brutal is the music itself?
I've been in my first pit last year (we actually started it) and it was super fun, I've seen pits that were almost cute because of how much people were caring for each other's safety and also got knocked over and started bleeding within the first 3 seconds of a wall of death (which was absolutely epic).
Have fun!
@@nickkohlmann thanks for the advices Man!!
@@mreddyfeelgood No problem!
P.S. I'm short too
Too bad my mom thinks there are no nice metal heads in the world and the pit is a death trap :l

@@Tecom38415 facts brother
Tip: Don’t wear hats or beanies in the pit, you will lose them really fast.
I lost my Cannibal Corpse hat in the pit during a Behemoth concert during the third song
It's always a good idea to hold your hat or cap or whatever in your hand, it'll stay there much longer than on your head. That's why I've never lost a cap in a mosh pit, but I've lost one in the sea...
Lost my beanie 2 minutes into a dri show lmaooo
It helps to be very tall.
Im a 5'1 girl. You can imagine how rough mosh pits are for me haha
Quirky Flowers Mosh pits are rough for me. 5’5 and 132 pounds.
Ahem 14 and 5'8" 211lbs.

Jeshwe DANG BOI YOURE THICC
Kat Everlasting Oof, and I thought I was short
1:58 This is probably one of the most criminally overlooked "rules"! Can you believe that I witnessed a fight almost break out at an Iron Maiden concert because one dude was trying to start a moshpit where people didn't wanna mosh? Everyone around helped separate the two guys, but it is only a reminder of how, at the same time that some people respect the rules and want everyone around to have a good time, some just lack some common sense.
I actually wear cargo pants when I go to shows so I don't lose my phone and wallet. I also put my beanie in there for cushioning so my phone doesn't break :D
Raiden Stark sick idea with the beanie bro
lol I put my phone in a sandwich bag and rolled it in a sock in my pocket when I went to a show once. It's either pouring cats and dogs outdoors or there's always that wasted person spilling their drinks all over me xD
Raiden Stark or just don't bring your phone and bring a GoPro or something and record the gopros video on your phone and post it
Or you can leave your phone with a non moshing friend
Same
As a girl who regularly goes to moshpits - thank you for this! :D But I gotta say, so far I got good experiences for the most part. But sure, it happens every now and then that someone touches where they shouldn't. The worst was couple years ago when a guy actually grabbed my ass and boobs and SQUEEZED and refused to let go. But then as horrible and disgusting it was, it was also kinda unbelieveable cause other guys around saw it and, like, IMMEDIATELY came to my rescue as a whole army of knights in shining ar... ahem, in black shirts, torn jeans and dirty boots. They were seconds away from kicking his ass too, but he bolted when he realized what trouble he got himself into. :D

I got stuck in the area in front of a mosh pit at Bad Religion at Riot Fest last month. I'm 5'1 and I fell and my glasses broke and a bunch of people around me pushed people out of the way to help me up and they helped me get to a calmer area in the crowd.
I love bad religion pits, people and atmosphere are great
Bad Religion pits are always fun!!!
I’m going to go see Bad Religion in August, and Descendents in September, are Punk pits dangerous for a 14 year old?
@@buzzardsinuses4780 8 months ago i was 14 years old, Leftover Crack came to Mexico and I joined the pit, it was awesome. Maybe you'll end with some bruises. But is worth it :)
No karate in the pit
You’re cringe for that. You probably listen to havok.
1) Be respectful
2) Have fun
3) If you see anyone on the ground in the pit lift them up ASAP
4) No karate in the pit
There is always just one guy who is moshing just a little bit harder and ruins fun for all...
and most of all don’t make Moshpitting a crusher. HELL NO.
The karate thing is only for metal not core stuff
I can appreciate how you used the word “etiquette” for a metal concert XD
I got the chance to mosh at my first concert, and I had a great experience. I walked out with nothing broken and I was able to get out when I wanted to. Ya I was scared to go into the Kreator pit but when people got a pit going for sabaton I got the courage and went in. Moral of the story: if you get the chance to be in the pit, be brave, have fun, and NO FUCKING KARATE IN THE PIT!
Sabaton is fucking great
hxc dancing is fine
@@smokepepsi at a hxc show it is not a cannibal corpse show tho
Very,Very good advice mate.I'm old-school when it comes to the pit,"If you leave the pit without bleeding, you're probably doing it wrong" lol
Elbows and knees no fist or feet.
My first mosh was a few months ago, I was with 2 friend from my high school in a mosh full of college seniors, got knocked down then picked up and pushed back into the pit. It’s just real nice and fun when people follow the etiquette you mentioned. One of the best local gigs I’ve attended. Even tho it was in a really sketchy venue.
I'm not social lol.. im socially awkward and shy..
Me too
nice Overkill picture I love them.
Get drunk
I'm generally reaaaally shy too, but I'm one of the first people to jump straight into the pit and persist through the entire show lol.
I'm Psychosocial
respecting wamen as always
Metal Sloth Productions just tell them woman is man.
I read it as “respecting ramen”
But disrespect karens
I fell down in a punk pit. Before I knew it some guy behind me just grabbed my jacket and was lifting me up but it. He got me back on my feet.I was really great ful. He was really Keen, very sweet.
(The spike thing is brutal at punk shows)
Should have been around in the late eighties early nineties , there were more than one person at C Corpse , napalm death ECT show that would attach those two sided razor blades to their leathers. At a skinny puppy , C Corpse show in Orlando a group of guys not one or two but a pack all pulled knives and went to slashing legs in the pit. Y'all have kung fu we at times had war zones.
@@ronaldowens5025 geez, that sounds really dumb. It kinda takes the fun out if it. Why go and intentionally hurt people?
@@honeycatacomb1191Yeah point of concert is to have fun. Not leave in a ambulance.
When i fell in the pit a guy helped me up gave a Quick hug and a high-five. He could tell that i was young and new to the pit
Dude why dont you have more subs you are awesome!
WOW you're funny
"They're equally intelligent and such" Such a lovely comment! I've been in a mosh before... Best experience ever!
The reason I don't crowd surf or stage dive is cause im kinda a big dude and I feel like people wont catch me or keep me up
same here hahaha
glenn rodriguez 6'8 290lb here I'm not stage diving
I say we get a crowd for this guy to surf on
I went to a festival last summer and met this guy who was probably 300 lbs, 6' even, and most of us worked together to lift him up. make sure it's a pretty big crowd and with considerate people, because chances are they'll be able to lift you up together.
An old friend of mine moshed at a local show, and broke a girl's nose. He didn't apologize, which is kinda fucked, but what can you do? I haven't had the balls to mosh or crowd surf yet, being 16, female, and weak. One of these days lol
what you can do is... well...
1. apologize
2. take care of that person
3. take responsibility
thanks for mentioning the stuff about touching girls in the pit, thats so important (i sound sarcastic but im not lol)
I like your DΣΑ+H shirt.
I don't know what the fuck "fan waving" is, can I get a definition over here?
I love the aggression and physicality of the mosh pit, however being a relatively short girl has it's disadvantages. Sometimes I want to see the show and unless I'm really up front I can see or breathe and armpits aren't the kind of pits I'm into. I've found that people are pretty considerate in the pit and I've been helped up after falling and hoisted up gallantly to crowd surf and apart from the occasional kick in the head I've never had a bad injury.
Wind-milling then. When someone takes their arms and flails them everywhere instead of keeping them to their sides like a good citizen. This makes it possible for people's faces to get hit even if they're careful.
Killbot&GorGorAttack!! Ah, got ya now. The Simpsons style "I'm going to spin my arms like this and if you get in the way it's your own fault" mentality. I agree, not so cool in the pit. Thanks for the response.
No karate in the pit
Can we address the elephant in the room? THE HxC KARATE DANCING NEEDS TO STOP.
Scenesters
if it bothers you then don't go to hxc shows then my dude
Who's There? HxC is pretty much scene music right?
+Salvador Martinez no my dude hxc is hatebreed nails backtrack xibalba terror not bmth bvb asking alexandria
HxC means "hardcore". It started in the early 80s with bands like Black Flag and Minor Threat. During the 90s, bands such as Converge and Earth Crisis began to combine hardcore with elements of metal, and in the early 2000s metalcore became a real thing (As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, early A7X). The "karate dancing" I'm talking about is a style of moshing common in HxC music involving aggressive dance moves (the "two-step", the "picking up change", the "spin-kick", etc.) I can't stand it, because many people who partake in this have no clear understanding of the etiquette involved in it (basic decent respect).
But then dumb emo bands like Asking Alexandria fucked up metalcore beyond belief. And now stupid scene kids are going to metal shows and acting like fucking douchebags in the pit. If they wanna do that at Warped Tour, fine whatever. But don't come to a fucking death metal show and start two stepping. And I personally like hardcore and older metalcore, and think it's a very good combination of metal's heaviness and post-hardcore's emotion. But once you get to 2008 and on, it's all just breakdowns, skinny jeans, and jailbait fangirls.
Great video man :)
I remember going into a mosh pit at a local metal festival about a year ago (I was always that girl that was too afraid to go to the pit because of those giant 150 kg guys and stuff). I was in the pit for 30 seconds and I was pinned to the ground by guess who? A 150 kg motherfucker. Other time, it was my boyfriend who almost broke my arm at a punk gig.
I've noticed a thing that in bigger pits (in like big festivals and concerts) people are generally nicer and know more about the pit etiquette. Even if I'm the only female there, they won't do anything inappropriate. On the other hand, small gigs in small towns tend to be very agressive and the etiquette there is non-existent. Few moths back I broke some guys nose because he wanted to drag my cute non-metalhead girlfriends into the pit (I know that motherfucker and he does that everytime I'm in that club for the concert).
People, please, be at least aware of the fact, that NOT ALL females are as strong as you or as agressive.
Worded just right! Maybe you'll surprise somebody next time ;)
By punching someone who would try to humiliate my friends at a gig? In that case, sure. But else, I'm gonna enjoy the mosh pit as much as anyone else: a man, a woman, an unicorn, a goat, whoever :D
I did mosh pits as far as i can remember. Im close to 40 now and these days are behind me, still if i see people fall down or start a fight I tend to either break em or use myself to block the raging crowd to pick up the ones who fell down. New kids have to learn that we are all there for fun, not to get into anything serious. Most of people i moshed with ended in having drinks after then show and majority of them are good people. However there are exceptions, like in all things. And for the part with girls, it varies from girl to girl. Us guys are always nuts. Girls can be crazy, and less so - but they arent tough as we are. Just hope new generations will know that and play nice :)
Its always nice to see girls in the pit. You have my respect! \m/_ _\m/
"NOT ALL females are as strong as you or as agressive." Then please tell your feminist friends to quit yelling in my ear that *they are.*
I thought Czech concerts are rather peaceful... but what can I say, I've only seen one HC punk from that country, the mosh pit at the beginning had only 3 people and I was just to lazy to jump in xD
can I be a punk and metal head if I keep my hair short?
It's not about looks, it's a mindset
Michael Z I have short hair dress like a dad and rap but I still consider myself a punk and metal head. Street punk, hardcore punk, Crust punk, grindcore, doom metal, sludge, stoner metal, black metal, and death metal j still has a special place in my heart.
It’s not about the look, it’s about the attitude you either have it or you don’t
Of course man!!!!!
Being a punk and a metal head is a lifestyle 95% of it has nothing to do with looks.
One time I went to a local death metal show and someone stage dived into me and kicked me in the head😂 at the time being a 16 y.o 110 pound girl I thought I was gonna die lmao. Good times good times🤘
I'm 77 pounds at 16, I'm scared
Every single jump cut before taking a sip from that mug is adding to the suspense of whether he actually ever took a sip
This little dude was like 5 foot nothing and another bro pulled up a fist and broke his nose straight in. The guy just wiped the blood down his shirt and kept going. All my respect goes to him.
I fucking love your hair and eyes. I won't crowd surf due to being dropped so much
Ha! Why thank you, and back atcha >:D
hehe, Thank you ^.^
Killbot&GorGorAttack!! Dude you are lady catcher Five thousand 😂😂
Can i say as a female moshpit person you're the best "rules" i've heard? I had some previously i can't find now and any new one's are anti-women when it comes to them joining in. You're "women's" section made me have respect for you.

I'm 47 and havent really gone in to a mosh pit for about 10 years now (well not much anyway) but since I have lots of knee injuries I always found that I would be super-careful not to take a sideways hit so I would hunch down a bit and sort of stand my ground. As a result I always found that younger or smaller or females moshers would gravitate around me as I was sort of able to provide a bit of shelter!! I was always happy enough to provide this service!!
I was at Mayhem fest a few years ago and Body Count played on the Sumerian Records stage, their set ended and Corpse played directly after BC on the stage right next to the Sumerian stage. It was one of the coolest pit experiences of my life. To go from Body Count to Corpse was awesome. It was also cool to see Ice-T at the side of the stage singing along with Corpsegrinder... It was very brutal, but there was a mutual respect going on in those pits. I fell down a couple times and the fellow moshers picked me up asked if I was ok and we kept on...
I was at concert and somehow they got a 200lb dude crowdsurfing and he ended up falling on me because the stage gaurd couldn't get to him. I watched the band's instagram story that night and that whole scene was caught on it, it literally looked like I broke my back lmfao.
In the words of Havok "No Karate in the Pit".
Uh good luck. Just don’t go see terror, hatebreed, Carnifex, whitechapel, knocked loose, kublai khan, gulch, SUNAMI, varials, frozen soul, etc. lol
I can not stop watching Tony's videos. They're too epic!
An extra tip for women planning on being in a mosh pit, leave the high heels alone. I understand the need to look cute until you break your ankles.
R.I.P. Chuck Schuldiner
Ok story time.
I am female and I am a pretty large person. I was in this mosh pit once and this guy was like oh hey my names ‘name’ and he was like all friendly. Later during a slower sort of song he kept touching my hip and my butt. Also I am a minor I clearly had X’s on my hands, THIS GUY DID NOT HAVE X’S ON HIS HANDS. It was still a great time regardless but damn he was such a creep.
Finally found this channel again!!! Been looking for this channel forever
Thanks for this I am going into the pit for the first time next week and this helped explain some things about it
when I went to ozzfest I was croud surfing for municipal waste asked for help up and surfed across the croud then I hit my shins on the fencing that keeps the croud from going on the stage it hurt like hell and they bled too it was great !!
If someone was disrespecting women I would be EXTREMELY pissed off.

Dude, make as many copies as possible, and share everywhere (the channel as a whole, lol)
I was at a Kreator show and everyone one there had the best manners. A larger guy fell down and he couldn't get up by himself, 3 other guys split the mosh and got him back up. That same big guy lifted me up and crowd surfed me.
Once during a Monster Magnet concert, I started pogoing and so did everyone else! Awesome!!!
THIS GUY MAKES SENSE IN ALL CATERGORYS. My first gig was MOTÖRHEAD in 1979. EVERYONE WAS DANCING. A few days later, was RUSH. All seating venue. All you could was move in your space. Motörhead gigs and also Punk gigs, took the punter into another physical dimension. The band sweats for you onstage, so the punters on the floor, sweat for the band. The band pumps on the adrenaline and it feeds down onto the floor. SLAYER- Marquee, SUICIDAL-Clarendon Ballroom, Any Punk band at the Venue, any RAMONES gig, CRO MAGS, BAD BRAINS, GANG GREEN, D.R.I., EXPLOITED and countless other bands. They all played to make YOU MOVE. The public will view Punk and Thrash Metal gigs like this. ‘THERE IS A VIOLENT ATMOSPHERE ABOUT THESE SHOWS’. Picture this. Donington. 1988. MUD BATH. GUNS AND ROSES ARE ON STAGE. Not a Punk or Thrash Metal Band. The crowd goes nuts. People are going down and they are not seen again. People cannot move backwards, or anyway, to pick up those punters that are being trampled. YES PEOPLE. SOME DIED THAT DAY. Shocking news. People go to shows TO HAVE A GOOD TIME AND TAKE THEM BACK AS MEMORIES. So, take this guys advice, and enjoy the shows. If you get hurt, so what, take yourself to doctors later or next day and get yourself checked out. JUST DON’T BE A JERK AND GET BEATEN UP. ENJOY THE SHOW PEOPLE.
I went into my first pit 2 months ago!! It was so fun and made sure to not punch anyone and basically followed ur rules lmao
Tbh not into his harlequin mug but this vid was super helpful as someone who's usually afraid of pits
What's fan waving cause I'm assuming that he doesn't mean literal fans
Karrisa Renee The dudes that wave their hands around in the pit In a fan motion, you can see how that wouldn't sit well with people
Lord Oz Yeah my little brother got hit in the throat by a hand waver and had trouble breathing for some time after that show.
Lol I first literally thought it was crazy fanboys or fangirls waving to the band the whole show lol
I think he means doing the windmill, its a hardcore dance and kinda crowd killy. Do it at your hardcore bands shows.

And for the love of god, don't be overly aggressive in mosh.
Just because you aren't overtly shoving your elbows into peoples faces doesn't mean you aren't overdoing it.
You wan't to push people around, smash into people and create chaos? Go for it. That's part of the fun. But if you are doing those things with so much force that people constantly getting thrown to the floor or smashing together hard enough to cause concussions, you need to tone it the fuck down.

For me I enjoy punk pits more than metal ones.
Let people leave the pit. I thought I was gonna have a heart attack I was so warn out and people kept pushing me back into the madness
Hate when that happens.
My son had to explain to me the majority of your video. Where was I when they were doing this back in the 80's? I'd definitely be in there crowd surfing 🤙🏽
This is an absolute king
For real, if someone loses their glasses or phone (or even keys, wallet, hat...really anything with value) in the pit and you see it: pick it up. Hold it over your head to advertise that you found it. Chances are the person knows they lost it and are panicking and you will see relief/respect when they see you have it. I went to a show about six months ago and this kid (around 17 years old) fell forward in the pit and his glasses flew off in front of me. I reached forward, picked them up and gave them right back to him. For a split second he was freaking out but the second he saw me he gave me a huge "THANKS!" and a few people in the pit thanked me too.
People actually are paying attention in the pit and if you are the guy that's following the rules and helping others it kind of goes around the pit. It's hard to describe.
You are such a cool guy :)
About to go to my first metal concert tomorrow night to see Anthrax and Exodus, thanks for the tips!

I have learned a LOT from this video, its very educational thank you! I want to mosh so bad but I probably can't cus I'm a girl and I wear glasses and I'm a pretty small person:( Do you know if there is an age range to go in a mosh pit?
Not a specific age range, but more of an ability range. Ability to know when to leave, what to do/not do, and have the right height and build to withstand falling and slamming into things. I'd also recommend the appropriate maturity level to walk away from a fight if one occurs.
Ok, I don't think I'll be able to do it for a while, in a very small girl and I'm a teen. I'm very muture when I know when I'm not safe but I think I'll just end up getting trampled on to mutch...lol but thank you anyway.
Skylar McCall I warmed myself up going to a Killswitch engage show before I went in anything too brutal
Oh ok, I'll start of with something less hardcore. Thanks
Skylar McCall pop punk mosh pits are a great way to start, most of them are not that rough and they aren’t full of angry people ;) just great fun most of the time!
Rip bracelet.
I hate crowd surfing in general, it sucks for everyone, but the one or two times I was the surfer, I spent the entire time tapping shoulders, alerting people, focusing real hard on not hurting anyone.
My brothers Doc Martens got fucking torn when i took them to a pit, lol. Don't wear delicate, expensive shoes like those to the pit. Oh, if you wear boots = wear steel-toed ones.
EDIT: one tip that i forgot. Sew or glue your pins and buttons on your battle vest/jacket. They will fall off in the pit if not looked after.
IsoOtso thanks for the advice im planning on going to my first moshpit whether it be punk psychobilly or ska I don't wanna mess up my docs
Salvador Martinez Just get a cheaper pair of surplus-boots from somewhere.
IsoOtso thanks again I'll wait a bit though until after a growth spurt because im only 13 and growth spurts might mess up how some of my shoes might fit
Salvador Martinez Good to hear, remember to have fun!
IsoOtso I always wear Doc Martens in the pit and I've never had them get damaged. I guess it just depends on what style of Docs you wear.

I'm going to aftershock, and it's my first metal concert. I am also generally fit, but also still in high school. do you guys think it's a good idea to go into the pit, because I really want to. or should I work out a bit before the concert.
Kickass shirt man
Yeah if you wear glasses, be careful as hell. I lost mine at a show years ago. If you can do without them, then do. If not, you're going to have to stick them in your pocket or something if you enter the pit. But it is possible for a pair to survive a whole show, if you're wary of that pit.
If I ever go to a metal show(WHICH I PROBABLY WON’T BECAUSE I DON’T WANNA END UP IN THE HOSPITAL!!!!), i’ll use these tips:)
Best mosh pit I’ve over been in was the war dance at an anthrax concert
