Well the piece you cut off could be made into a bowl or a clock or a wooden Frisbee (LOL) or a _____. The big pieces, well....I don't know...hmm...maybe a lamp? (After turning then holes drilled all over...) 💁♂🤷♂🙆♂
Finally a beautiful piece of wood where everything hasn't been removed! So many woodworkers start with lovely grained largr pieces and then reduce and reduce and reduce down to pittly items. What a waste! But you have retained beauty and function! Very rewarding !
As a newbie to this art, I really enjoy the way you explained everything you did so us newbies have a clue what you are doing ! YES, I was being sarcastic, think I'll now go and watch some paint drying !
A perfect look of a perfect bowl. You made a nice use of the grains of this log. With a beautiful result. Very inspiring for my own work in woodturning. Thank you.
The way the grain runs and is brought out is great. When I saw the dark 'line' I thought it was a crack, but obviously it wasn't. The dark markings are very interesting and give some textural pops. I like it. 👍👍👍 When you were scooping up the bit and putting them in the bucket I thought how interesting it would be to use a lot of those with epoxy and make something. LOL.. I can't believe that came from me. I'm not usually an epoxy proponent....But it does have it's place...once in a great while...
Really nice. Personally, I do not like turning large barky logs, because it takes ages to get them round. But this turned out amazing and it was well worth it!
Beautiful work, as always, Harry. We just had a 24" diameter pin oak felled at our home last month and I have 10 logettes (about 3 feet long) from it that I'm looking for ideas, as well. I'll likely use one for bowl blanks and another for vase blanks. I'll want to slab one for hand planes I like making on the CNC and a couple more for wedding boxes for my wife's (minister and wedding officiant) clients. Down to 5 with no plans, yet. I'll be looking through your other videos, of course.
It might have been a challenge for you but it sure come out beautiful! And you did an amazing job turning it as well!!! I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
That’s a beautiful piece of art Harry. I’m sure you don’t need my help in creating something else from this fantastic wood. But a long slender vase would be perfect. 👍🏻
Thank you very much! I have loads of other content including my brand new art and design channel you may be interested in www.youtube.com/@DesignedbyHS/videos Thanks for the support 😁👍
Interesting how you aligned the grain pattern with the finished shape. Your lathe is heavy duty compared to most of the ones I have seen. I'm a retired machinist. Can you share the information about your lathe?
While the end result is genuinely impressive, it seems as if you continue to use the spindle roughing gouge after changing the axis of turning, meaning you were then turning end grain with the tool. The spindle roughing gouge is not made for that type of situation and can break. Later you switch to a conventional bowl gouge, which is quite suitable. Can you explain why you used the roughing gouge in this way?
Hi Harry your work is always magnificent and unique, you are very talented and artistic this piece is magnificent and unique it looks lovely well done. Amanda xx
Nice end product but I worry you’re setting yourself up for an injury using the spindle gouge after changing the orientation, and wearing gloves. Stay safe
@@HarrySmithShorts Harry I probably use the same technique just without the gloves. Catch a gloved finger in an aperture and the cloth will tighten around the finger and deglove the skin.
I cannot fault your techniques, or your beautiful results. However, this is one of the most boring woodturning videos I have ever seen, if not The Most Boring! Why? You just went on, and on, without stopping to check your work, which is hugely important in the creative process. Nor did you make any verbal communication, whatsoever! I'll watch a few more of your videos, just to check if this was a one off presentation. If it continues, I'll be unsubscribing!
What should I make using the other two blocks of Oak? 👍😁
Maybe a table? 😮
Well if the wood is as good as this piece. I would do similar turnings as the first one.
Complimenti beautiful che meraviglia

from a rough piece of wood to a masterpiece. so perfect, especially the moment 17:10 🤩
I Have two rules in woodturning. 1) Start with a great piece of wood. 2) Don't screw it up. You have succeeded here in spades.
Thanks for your comments Brad 👍😃🪵
Gorgeous result Harry. Thank you for sharing your time, your skill and your adventure👍🤟🪡🎨
This was not a challenge, it took me just 17.40 minutes to watch it, dead easy. Love your work Harry, keep 'em coming. Cheers

@Steve - if you click on the more tab (next to the title) and scroll down to Axminster tools used, the last link is for the lathe.

Any advice or demo for turning egg cups please
Question please what was the moisture content at least 8 to 9 thank you
Is this one of those woodturning channel where you never talk or explain what you are making?
😳🧐👐👀
Hi Harry. Great piece of turning. It has inspired me to tackle something a little bigger! By the way, where do you get your little discs from?
Where did you get those coins you put on the bottom?
I need a lathe. Got plenty of trees.
Nice end product but I worry you’re setting yourself up for an injury using the spindle gouge after changing the orientation, and wearing gloves.
Stay safe
I really love it, but it is not in your shop... 🙂
Thank you very much! I can add it to the shop, or you can send me an email directly if you're interested 😁👍
Sharpen that chainsaw!😅
You might want to spend a few minutes with a file on your chainsaw.😊
Borrowing!!!!
Get areal chain saw
Wearing gloves whilst sanding is just a torsion injury waiting to happen.
Thanks John I tend to keep my testicles well away from the lathe. Do you operate a different technique when sanding? 😮😂
@@HarrySmithShorts Harry I probably use the same technique just without the gloves. Catch a gloved finger in an aperture and the cloth will tighten around the finger and deglove the skin.
