Nazareth - One of most underrated bands of the last 50 years. So many great songs!! And one of the best lead vocalists of the rock era!!!
-underrated is so overused !-
-rest in paradise- 😔 🕯
absolutely
"This Flight Tonight" is a song originally by Joni Mitchell, from her 1971 album Blue.
Shanghaid in shanghai is one of my FAV’s!
The singer, Dan McCafferty died today, rest in peace pal, fab tune from my childhood, thank you.
Funny story re Nazareth- My grandmothers best friend Mrs Scott's son used to get her tickets to the Usher Hall in Edinburgh every Xmas as a treat for a show, box seats!!. She went to the show and on her return she told my Nana all about it. Her only criticism was there were a lot of young folk and it was very loud. I asked what did she see? she replied Nazareth, her son who was in his 50's saw Nazareth and bought her tickets , thinking it was a nativity play . I was rolling on the floor in hysterics.
Heart lifted the guitar riff from this song for their song 'Barracuda'.
Saw them in Sudbury in Northern Ontario Canada back in 1976 on their Hair of the Dog tour and this song was a highlight. 12,000 kids packed in a 6,000 seat hockey arena. Memorable night for a 16-year old.
Saw KISS @CHEAP TRICK there in 75. lotta fun.PS are you the tv James Scully

Dryden is Northern Ontario
Sudbury not so much
@@johntarnowski9086 I grew up there. It's Northern Ontario. Hwy 17 has long been considered the dividing line, but the real point is that a band like Nazareth showing up in Sudbury in the mid 70s was a big deal. Major acts at the time were very far and very few between.
I saw them on that same tour in Lethbridge, Alberta. I was 19 ... and I think I was deaf for two days afterward! You just don't mess with Nazareth!
This single actually preceded "Love Hurts", off their debut album "Razamanaz". Some of their other hits include "Broken Down Angel" and "My White Bicycle". RIP Manny Charlton, their lead guitarist, who passed only last month (July 5) at the age of 80. Guys, another band I think you'd love is Slade, who actually did the ORIGINAL version of Quiet Riot's "Cum On Feel the Noize". I think you'd get a kick out of "Take Me Back 'Ome", "Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me", "Far Far Away", and "Run Runaway" (You'd love "Run Runaway", it has horns, violin, bagpipes, and killer guitar). Anyone agree?
Slade Run Runaway is an awesome song.
My White Bicycle has always been one of my top favs.
Absolutely, I would say Gud' by t'Jane is also a must. Oh, and My oh My.
Love their version of Darling Be Home Soon.
Razamanaz was their 3rd.... not the Debut - It was their first hit, but bevore that therer was Nazareth & Exercises - This Flight Tonight is from the 4th record Loud ´n`Proud
Joni Mitchell wrote and recorded this song. Nazareth did a nice job putting their take on it.
And if you want to do another Joni Mitchell song covered by a rock act, Alice Cooper's version of 'Hello Hurray' is stadium rock epic.
@@toddymac um .... pretty sure Judy Collins wrote 'hello hurray'... CSN covers ' Woodstock" also written by Joni Mitchell
@@shawnpost6669 you are correct, I got confused. Still a great alternative take on a Judy Collins song regardless.
@@toddymac agreed ... her voice wow
Another great Joni Mitchell cover that they did was "Morning Dew"
"Bad Bad Boy" is another Nazareth hit that really rocks.
Their 1975 single "Holy Roller" is pretty good too, some folks think it's about roller skating it's actually about organized religion... 🛼
-#cheers-
Yeah! You played it. One of my favourite Nazareth songs.
You certainly made me smile today guys, here in Naz's hometown of Dunfermline. 😃 A classic from my Dad's mates I have been listening to for my whole life. Nazareth, believe it or not started out in the 60s as a damn good soul band, so I think that is what Amber is hearing in Dan's voice, the remnants of what was there BEFORE the night on the brandy 😆 The next step for Nazareth should be Razamanaz, then on through Dunfermline Rock into my friends, the incredible BIG COUNTRY, starting with Fields of Fire.
Greetings fae Bonnie Scotland 🏴🤘🏴🤘🏴🤘🏴
BIG COUNTRY... Thank you... Bring it on.!!!
(maybe some Deacon Blue to go along, too).
Everyone always bangs on about the "Merseybeat" phenomena but all those bands ever did, really, was try to sound like and exploit The (admittedly brilliant) Beatles whereas Scotland, for a relatively small population has always punched well above its weight, musically, with no two artists or combos sounding alike.
Take my hat off to you laddies (and lasses) for that.
@@jibteenuc9836 Scotland as a whole has certainly produced some incredible music, but we also gave the world the Bay City Rollers, soooo, sorry about that 😆 Our wee City of Dunfermline has really punched above it's weight. Iain Anderson of Jethro Tull, Nazareth, The Skids, The Rezillos Barbara Dickson and Big Country all came out of Dunfermline and I couldn't be more proud.
Didn't realise that Barbara Dickson came from Dunfermline, I've seen her a number of times, she was very good. Surprised that Iain Anderson was also from the same city, I was even more amazed to hear on Johnnie Walker's radio show that Mr Anderson doesn't have Scandinavian blood, with a name like Anderson, how come? Dunfermline has been a real source of musical genius, loved This Flight Tonight, Nazareth did a great job of it. Not a fan of Big Country, but The Rezillos I was amazed came from Dunfermline, so to with The BCR, wasn't a fan, yet they made popular songs. Was Mij Ure one of The Skids memebers? I will educate a mate of mine from your city, as he likes music.@@paulsmith2516
"Claim to Fame, Miss Misery, Crazy, May The Sun Shine, Hair of The Dog, Beggars Day, Love Hurts, and Please Don't Judas Me" are definitely some must-listen cuts that come to mind off the cuff. And, they're doing a few tour dates this summer and fall.
Had this album and listened every day but didn't get into them until early 80s Beggars Day yes!!;
Jay & Amber, "Hair Of The Dog" was another hit song for them!
edit - Jay, Just one Track Coaches Association for the whole state? Small state population for sure. We have a County Track Coaches & Officials Association, and then a state Athletic Association.
One of the two most iconic riffs of the early hard rock/heavy metals days.
Yes please do "Hair of the Dog" next. If you want a song with attitude, that's the one for you.
Love Hurts also was a hit
Razamanaz, Love Hurts, Hair of the Dog & Broken Down Angel are all must listen to songs by Nazareth. Partied hard to this band in 1976 & 77.
Guess I’ve never heard this song before!!! It was cool how the guitar was chugging along!
As people have said, this is a Joni Mitchell song. Nazareth's cover was received so well, that Joni would jokingly intro the song as a Nazareth cover in her concerts at the time :)
Alcatraz,Miss Misery,Begars Day ,vigilant Man, Star,Telegram,whytdoctor Woman,Dear Jhon...e tantas outras 🤘🎸
Changin' Times by Nazareth is a guitar jam!!! Jay, you will love it!!
My favorite Nazareth song especially the live version. Great guitar. Also really like Sunshine though it is an entirely different sounding song.
Hair of the dog is a great song by Nazareth
YES!!
Hair of the Dog is great album from beginning to end.
_#rockn__ it_ 🔥
"Hair of the Dog" is probably their best known song, and definitely is a must-hear song, but my personal favorite is "Crazy (A Suitable Case for Treatment)", from the Heavy Metal movie soundtrack.
Saw Nazareth a couple of times back in the 70s. Loudest goddamned band I ever heard - my ears were ringing for days afterwards!
A really great one they have that was a big MTV hit player .'''Holiday'' ,it is such a cool song .
Changing Times off the Hair of the Dog album rocks. Manny Charltons work here made me want to learn to play guitar. Thank you Manny
My favorite song 🤘
Loved my sister's Nazareth album when I was very young. Got back into them in the mid eighties. Bought Hair Of The Dog cassette! Wore that thing out in car cassette player. Nazareth Rocks!
Nazareth used to be one of my favorite bands. Back then I especially liked "Welcome to Alcatraz" and "Vigilante Man" ;-)). Hard rock started with something like that. Best wishes @all from hamburg (germany)
His Voice and the Bass Guitar are the Hook in this song..As a Guitar player it's a Basic chug on Guitar and simple barre chords and harmonics..VERY UNIQUE VOICE,,IN MY TOP 5 UNDERRATED BANDS IN THAT ERA FOR SURE...GREAT PICK AND AWESOME VIDEO THANK'S FOR THE TRIP BACK IN TIME I LOVE YOUR BACKGROUND ..LOT'S OF LEGEND'S HANGING ON THE WALL'S😎😎😎
Oh yes 😁 my favorite Nazareth song!
Finally some more Nazareth. Please check out "Miss Misery" and "Whiskey Drinking Women".
Yes!
A great Nazareth song is Holiday ! A real banger
fun fact: this song was written by none other than Joni Mitchell herself !!!! The song appears on Joni's Blue album and sounds quite different from this one.
I used to think that Love Hurts was a Nazareth original. I’d never heard it before.
I’m sure she refers to it as “That Nazareth song”😂
Really wish I could get into Joni. I love her writing but her performances have always left me cold. Sad (for me, I guess).
@@jibteenuc9836 Don't be sad. I've got the Blue Album (on cassette), but I've got the same problem. I must have had some reason for buying it, but maybe it was just something everybody was expected to have. In theory I like it. I just don't listen to it.
@@folginator fact
My favorite Nazareth song!! Thank you!😍
Good call with the Deep Purple comparision, this was produced by their bass player, Roger Glover.
A Joni Mitchell song, surely one of the best covers ever, that voice wow !
Love Hurts is another classic by Nazareth
The original Love Hurts was performed by The Everly Brothers and written by Boudleaux and Felice Bryant.
I’ve always thought that Nazareth is the band that Guns N Roses got their sound from, especially Axl Rose’s voice. They even covered their song “Hair of the Dog.”
GNR wanted Manny Charlton to produce their first album but their schedules didn't align. Charlton even flew to LA and made a couple demo tapes with them.
Not to me. Jackyl and Krokus sound more like Nazereth than GNR ever could ...
Axl Rose admits that Dan McCafferty is his favourite vocalist
Axl was a huge fan of Naz they were a massive influence on GnR.
Oh my you have doubly made my day with this. My number 3 band. My top 3 vocalist. Love this song too. Grateful to have seen them live on The Elixir Tour83 or 84. Only 800 tickets sold out at the high school auditorium. Thank you so much enjoy this he. Next should be Kentucky Fried Blues, Darrell sneaks in those Scottish tribal drumbeats, banger song.
unforgettable voice
Nazareth forever 🤘🎸
They were so great. This band had so many diverse hits. Amazing that this was a Joni Mitchell song.
Such a great band their sound is unique
A great couple of ballads are Moonlight Eyes and Sunshine.
Great song by a great band. Lead singer is amazing!
You should definitely check out the original by Joni Mitchell!
WHITE LION
check out this band. They’re an 80s hair band and underrated.
Their 2 most popular songs are ‘Wait’, which is heavier, and ‘When the Children Cry’ which is softer.
Would love if y’all reacted to these!!
Deep track 70's rock cut! One of the best concert bands of their era.
Good Song. More good ones are 'Sold My Soul', 'Miss Misery', 'Changin' Times', 'Please Don't Judas Me', 'Telegram', 'Lift the Lid' & 'You're the Violin.'
Getting older forgot this one from my past thank you for bringing It back to me 😁
Loud and Proud that whole album rocks !!! "The Ballad of Hollis Brown" the last track of the album, was written by Bob Dylan, and is very Macabre and sad.
Hair of the dog & Love Hurts are probably their most iconic.
My first car accident was listening to "hair of the dog". Listening to the 8 track player in my brothers 73 grand Torino jammed loud.
Oh the memories 😂
"Woke Up this Morning" .. Nazareth's version is top notch!!
“Barracuda” anyone?
Yep, Heart "borrowed" that riff! And guess who Nazareth borrowed it from? The Beatles - Get Back.
You're welcome!
@@MissAstorDancer No! "Heart" did NOT borrow that riff from Nazareth. The galloping guitar sound goes back decades before this song or The Beatles.
Roger Fisher was the one who came up with the variation of the galloping guitar sound for his band's song Barracuda. Nancy Wilson had absolutely NOTHING to do with the distinctive guitar riffs. The Wilson sisters have been spending the last few decades pretending that Heart was their band and that they were the only talent. Too bad that so many people take what they say as being true and don't know their motivations.
@@BobSoltis1 WOW! Bitter much?
I never said that either sister had anything to do with Roger's riff.
And your opinion notwithstanding, the band "Heart" WOULD NOT have become the band they became, without Ann and Nancy. Period.
@@MissAstorDancer Wow! Ignorant much???
Nancy Wilson is on record lying about how "they" came up with the riff. She was not anywhere near Roger and Mike when Roger came up with that riff. You are just repeating the lie Nancy made.
The band that Ann and Nancy joined (neither one was a founding member as they often claim) would not have been great without ANY of the original members from the first recordings that contributed to their great creativity, chemistry, and sound.
@@BobSoltis1 I venture that we might be on fairly equal ground as to our knowledge about Heart's history. But ***some*** artists refer to themselves as "we", while others take all credit for themselves. I have seen every interview with A&N, and have never heard either of them claim to have been a founding member. They have always told about joining the band when Ann responded to an ad in a newspaper or something. And Roger Fisher famously said that when Ann came into the group, there was an instant magic and spark that entered the band that had not been there before. But I'm not gonna argue with you any more, because this is off-topic.
You definitely need to check out Razamanaz , that’s always been one of my favorite Nazareth songs ( needs to be the studio version)
Great heavy metal great great live band
You really have to check them out singing this on their on stage video ( Nazareth - This Flight Tonight (Austrian TV 1975) It's Awesome!! I'm positive you'll love it way more than just listening to the one you just did, you get to see the whole band and really hear them and see the Singer!
Yes, that was a great performance.
Fabulous Joni Mitchell song done expertly here. I love this song by anybody!
I've seen Nazareth years back , loved their concert Expect No Mercy . I remember they were smoking a joint on stage and got arrested after concert in their Hotel . 😎
I only heard Nazareth on radio, and never bought their music, but I really like this, as well as what I heard on the 'airwaves' :) It's Great!
Little known fact about the band they owned two bars in Jacksonville FL that I worked at while I was in the Navy
"Hair of the Dog" is probably my favorite Nazareth song.
This is one of those bands that kind of flew under the radar as they say. Underrated and underappreciated.
Love this band. I saw them in 1978 at a stadium and again in 1999 in a cabaret type venue. They sounded exactly the same. So many good tunes its hard to pick a favorite but I like Holy Roller!
my favorite song by this band!!
I'm glad that you picked up on the Deep Purple connection. Deep Purple's bassist Roger Glover was the producer for three of Nazareth's albums in the early 1970s.
Great vid, guys. ♥ I saw Nazareth play in Glasgow's Solid Rock Cafe, early-ish 90s. They rocked a packed house.
Damnmed right the opening of the tune IS the lyrics and the singing...Fuck does ir set a mood. Listen to it again What an intro!
Hair Of The Dog is the ultimate ROCK SONG. A great follow up would be Miss Misery among many others. I'd be here all night long listing them. So I'll just leave you FINALLY with probably the greatest ballad of all time Love Hurts🙃
LOUD N PROUD
These guys were the poster kids of Party Like a Rock Star. They got sober by 1984 but it didn't change the crazy. Instead of drunken pranks, the guys started putting thought into their gags.
Then things got wild.
" Miss Misery" " Please Don't Judas Me" ! Again some of their Best!
Lucky enough to have seen them live!
Joni Mitchell once introduced this onstage as 'a song by Nazareth.'
A Joni Mitchell song covered by Nazareth. Love it!
Absolutely one of my favorite bands. No mean city was a lp that I really loved.play more of these guys pls.
I have that one on vinyl still. My favorite album is Expect No Mercy. Have their discography. Also have Dan's latest solo album, which is really good.
@@spikebeans9563 whiskey drinking woman, white bycle and please don't Judas me definitely shows the range of styles that these guy's were masters of.
@@frankbennett2278 true. My White Bicycle has always been one of my favs. Don't forget, Bad Bad Boy, Vigilante Man, Star, Where Are You Now, and Expect No Mercy is straight up In your face. Kentucky Fried Blues shows some vocal capabilities as well.
@@spikebeans9563 have you heard their new single _ strange days..
These men still going strong and keeping it real.when I hear 'sunshine it sure brings back a lot of memories of my high school crush.
@@frankbennett2278 maybe. I've listened to one song and it was really good. Don't remember the name of it.
Love this song…my favorite album by them. Excellent heavy boogie rock throughout.
One of their earlier tunes from 1973, where they have not totally expanded their sound yet, but a good breakthrough hit in Canada.. providing more exposure for the band here in the States, laying the groundwork for their major Hit album , Hair Of the Dog in 1975..
This is the type of song you need to listen to straight thru a few times without stopping it, you stopped it twice at the worst times, right at the best part when they sang " Your drinking sweet Champlain got your headphones up High!" and then again right when it was ending! Sometimes maybe just try to listen to the full song without stopping it and do the comments when it's done, to get the full affect of the song.
Great, great band. Please Don't Judas Me is a masterpiece 👌 RIP Manny
This band back in the day if you look at the cover will give you a clue... trippin music. Great colors and sounds that really open your mind. Vancouver Shakedown is a great time. The album Razamanz has lighting bolts on the cover..tells it all..🥳
LoL I've always giggled at how they put a 50's riff in this song, and it sounds Good'''''''''😁
10000% !! Love to see others recognizing this highly underrated band (Now-a-days anyways) for what they were, Hard hitting proto metal Rock N Roll! But... with a soft side, showing their diversity
Holy cow guys
Аж мурашки по коже!
Nazareth are definitely rockers but you have heard NOTHING yet from them. if you want to hear them at their best, here's my picks:
Top 5 Nazareth's songs to listen to next:
1. Hair of the Dog (Bad-ass hard rock song with iconic lyrics. Probably their biggest hit. Banger!)
2. Razamanaz (Aggressive, rocking, and rollicking hard rock song!)
3. Miss Misery (To hear Dan McCafferty's massive vocals on this one, he will blow you away!)
4. Vancouver Shakedown (One of their biggest hits)
5. Shanghaid in Shanghai (Maybe their best mainstream rock hit. Full of swag and very fun)
Nazareth warming up for Deep Purple at Radio city Music Hall. 1/23/76
There are so many more (and perhaps more accessible) Nazareth greats. Maybe try Hair of the Dog, Miss Misery or Beggars Day next.
Love them. This song was written by Joni Mitchell. They really did a great version. Check out hair of the dog
Amazing song! The drums hold back for a long time, but an amazing Joni Mitchell song cover, by a great Scottish band.
You need more Nazareth!! Check out "Kentucky Fried Blues", "Changing Times", "Shanghai'd In Shanghai", "Silver Dollar Forger" "I Want To Do Everything For You", "Razamanaz" or "Bad, Bad Boy".
Love it.
Great Joni Mitchell cover. Would love to see more hard rock acts take on her material. Number 1 songwriter of the 20th century.
They did this Joni classic just Right love it love you guys
I get people want RSR to react to this and that , but as newbies “ hair of the dog” is the song that attracts new people to this decade of rock and roll and get them excited to hear more. Also check out whiskey drinking woman
Love Nazareth ❤
Got to listen to Busted and Expect No Mercy!
This song was written by Joni Mitchell and is a track from her Blue album. You should check out her version to appreciate just how much Nazareth altered the sound of an acoustic folk song to get this heavy rock version.
Please listen to “revenge is sweet” by them as well. you really hear that heavy and raspiness in dan’s voice. One of the most underrated rock bands of all time !
My favorite Nazareth tune...
My favorite Nazareth song!
That is funny that Jay mentioned Deep Purple, because Roger Glover (bass player for Deep Purple) produced & promoted this band. They were good friends. You need more Nazareth & Deep Purple!!
