Dan passed away last year and while he dealt with health issues somehow he kept that voice late in life. One of the best ever!
Both Brian Johnson (AC/DC) and Axl Rose (GNR) stated that Dan was their main influences on their voices.
Strange because I saw them in the early 90s and his voice was horrible. I felt bad for the guy.
@@timhays2086
I saw him on the early 2000’s and his voice was perfect.
To be honest, I don't know if it was Dan I saw. I went to a Nazareth concert. I am not a big follower, so I don't know if it was him or a different singer.
@timhays2086 I saw them in the early 90s too, and he sounded good when I saw them.
I’m 56 years old grew up listening to this song and I can listen to this over and over. I do have to say that hair of the dog album is one of the best albums ever from anybody
I'm 59 and I agree. Top shelf
One of the saddest most truthful songs I've ever heard, the perfect voice to sing this song, and the crying guitar still gives me chill bumps.
…..and that guitar solo….wow….it’s like a wailing person crying out in pain 💔❤️🔥💔❤️🔥💔
And that is SUPER difficult getting that feedback going and controlling it with that degree of accuracy. Just outstanding!
@@jonahhex8178 Manny Charlton was a beast at lead guitar in Nazareth 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Dan is one of the vocalists that created his own stamp in the music world. He has a distinctive voice that I love. RIP, brother.
So, you finally got to Nazareth (formed 1968)...Dan's voice was before Bon Scott by 5 years(1973) and decades before Axel Rose (1985)...yet he was the influence for that power, high, sustaining, raspy, knocks your socks off vocals. In fact, they were out the same time as Led Zeppelin, 1968. To me Dan's voice will always be right up there, if not number one, for power and emotion. When he sang you felt it. I saw Nazareth 4 times in the 70's...and let me tell you..live was incredible!
Like a blues guitarist he knew how to make you feel the music, not just hear it.
Bon Scott isn't a good comparison. Brian Johnson is. Definitely axl rose.
Bon was more sleazy than raspy. Definitely comparable to Brian johnson, though
-axl * not : " axel "-
Don’t forget Graham Bonnet and the Marbles back in 1969 releasing Only One Woman. His voice was very similar and he was around in 1968 doing his thing
This has to be one of the best love songs ever. ❤❤❤
One of the very few hard rock vocalists who kept his voice intact throughout hos 50 years in show business.
It was perfect for the pantsdripping ballads and the hard core hard rock belters.
Not that hard when you don't have much of a voice lol. He was ok. Most of their music was utter crap but they had some really great moments, like this one.
@@wendymotogirl
Copyed from the vocal planet: “Dan's voice in its prime, in the 1970s, was definitely something to behold; his signature being resonant, raspy fifth octave wailing akin to the likes of Brian Johnson, Dan's voice having a few extra benefits like being weightier, chestier, and his technique a bit more refined. Past his prime, since the 1980s, Dan started refining his cleaner vocals more, more often singing in a wistful tone and reaching into his surprisingly dark low register more often. Despite developing more areas of his voice, Dan never seemed to lose his ability to sound raspy, meanwhile accumulating quite the vocal range for himself over time. His health took a rather steep drop in the late 2000s, because of his smoking habits, and he retired from touring with Nazareth in 2013, lending his weathered but great voice for one last album "Rock 'N' Roll Telephone", leaving behind one of the most respectable legacies in the history of rock music. at 70-years-old, Dan claims he's still not done yet, though, as he occasionally still performs around the world when he can and has toyed around with the idea of another studio album.”
Nazareth ahhhhhh uhhh
Memories
This Flight Tonight
A must ☮️❤️🔥
Joni Mitchell cover but Nazareth made it theirs .
I remember buying "Hair of the Dog" when it came out. I've had it on album, 8-track, cassette, and CD. The good one's never get old. Great post.
Same!
Ditto
It was the second CD I bought in the late 80's while in high school. I still have it. It has a chunk taken out of the outer edge but still plays just fine.
🔥🤘💯 -ikr ... !-
Same here, and I have worn out several copies.
I would love for Beth to sing this song ❤ It would be a great cover song for her in my opinion 🌟🥰
yur too bald 4 her yo', she likes men wif a big bush'''
Underrated band and a great cover
Been wondering when you would get around to these guys. This is the core music of my youth. A very good band to see live in the day. Thank you
I only saw them once, '81 I think. They were magnificent.
Beautiful rendition...and this comes from a boomer who grew up with the Everly Brothers. Boudleaux Bryant and his wife penned numerous EB hits from the 60's including All I have to do is dream. ❤
I always thought Dan McCafferty's voice was the ultimate iconic "hard rock" voice and Nazareth songs were one of a kind...don't think anyone else could sound like that. thanks for the reaction Beth :)
1975, they hooked me. Their "Hard'N" Heavy CD is a must-own.
Hair of the Dog is my favourite. Great sleeve art, too.
Nazareth were great live saw them 3 times sounded just the same live such a powerful voice
I saw them twice. Once in 1979 with Thin Lizzy and other in a bar in the 90's with all the original guys except Manny. R.I.P. to Dan, Manny and Darrell.
The encore , please don’t Judas me!! Loved it
@@georgeseanor or Miss Misery.
❤️🔥 this song and his vocal are both amazing
My favourite version of this classic. Part of the soundtrack of my youth.
One of the best bands and singers ever.
Nazareth is a band that you usually associate with hardrock, and then to hear this kind of ballad from them was absolutely amazing
Oh, Jr. High dances. I've loved this song since my young angsty self first heard it.
One of the best! RIP Dan
Rock In Peace Darrell Sweet, Many Charlton and Dan McCafferty. A pleasure to see you live.
One of the greatest Ballads ever!
Roy Orbison did a fantastic cover of this too, also Gram Parsons and EmmyLou Harris do a version thats just plain beautiful...
And the original was by the Everly Brothers.
Boudleaux Bryant and his wife Felice also wrote Rocky Top which is a famous bluegrass song. It is also the fight song for the University of Tennessee's athletic teams.
This album is incredible!
That's playback. In my opinion, it's one of the greatest studio vocal performances in history.
Agreed. Along with Tyler on Dream On.
If only we could have enjoyed it for more than 5 seconds in a row 😂
@@scott3744 The song in its entirety exists on other pages. This is a reaction channel. Expect reactions.
@@scott3744churlish, Scott, churlish
I love that song
Yeah, this is a classic that will never fade away, a fitting Monument to the powerful talent behind the Voice, William Daniel MacCafferty, may he Rest In Peace.
Never get enough Naz! Were gonna miss you Dan'O. You were balls to the walls and tender.
One of the truly great unique voices of rock that seems to get forgotten along with thr band.
This always reminds me of the movie dazed and confused
Also, there is a version of this done by journey on King Biscuit just after Steve Perry joined the band and features a rare duet with a female singer
"Love Hurts" is a song written and composed by the American songwriter Boudleaux Bryant. First recorded by the Everly Brothers in July 1960, and covered by Roy Orbison in 1961.
And I had thought that Gram Parsons wrote it. Learn something new every day. Thanks!
I swear, this is the absolute best expression of the sentiment that the song is about.
Love your channel! Thank you for being on youtube.
she's good at vocal knowledge but her feelings are confused actually'
That is a great album. It's all good, but my favorites from it are: Please Don't Judas Me __ Beggars Day __ Miss Misery __ Whiskey Drinking Woman ... and of course Hair of the Dog and Love Hurts. Oh, Rose in the Heather; also good. I played the heck out of that album back in what '75? I know it was out before we moved in '76.
I agree. I haven't listened to this all the way through in a long time. Time for a revisit. This is one you can just let play. No bad songs
My mother used to drive me to and from daycare every day growing up with Nazareth in the cassette player in her old Cadillac Cimarron. Wore that tape out over time. Such an amazing album
One of the best cover songs ever recorded. Memories of my youth right here.
Nazareth were a great band. Absolutely epic live.
This song was big in Canada in the 70's, got a lot of air play on FM.
This song always, always gets me. For some reason whenever I had a break up this song would appear on the radio not long after... If there was any way I could describe this tune it's raw emotion.
Wow, Beth, what a great reaction. And this is the music of my junior high years and I saw them live at some point then and loved it. But I love listening to this because the singing is incredible and also the background vocals are really nice.
And I loved all the things that you pointed out. And that diagram of the anatomy, by virtue of its simplicity, is actually I think one of the easiest to immediately understand compared to so many.
Although there is one slight graphical mistake in it, and it's where the line pointing out where the esophagus is actually passes on through the esophagus and back to the trachea. But it doesn't have an arrowhead on it and so I assume that's just a graphical oversight.
I'm a musician of many years but I always learn something new about singing whenever I watch your reactions and I just thought this one was particularly good, plus I absolutely love this song.
Nazareth had a great ability to cover a song and make it a rocking hit. This one was originally recorded by the Everly Brothers, and This Flight Tonight was written/originally recorded by Joni Mitchell.
Yes they made - This Flight Tonight -
their own. They were a great band. 😃
i love songs were the singing and the instruments . Sound like an almost perfect match for each other.
I saw these lads at Hara arena Dayton,Oh April Wine a month later. Epic shows I'll always remember.
For another Scottish singer from the 70s, check out James Dewar singing on Robin Trower- "Bridge of Sighs". Dewar's vocals are excellent and Trower's melancholy soulful guitar fits the idea of somebody crossing the bridge of sighs in Venice.
Such an under appreciated vocalist!
First band I saw live ❤
Yes, such an epic song. As a male, it makes my skin shiver. Love lost and love gained are just like ying/yang. I use it for a lost one from family and gaining a new one.
Having a Deep Purple member to help you out in early times was really helpful.
yeah, this is the studio recording. killer song and vocals and guitar solo
I've gotta tell ya Beth it was REALLY cool watchin' you hear this great song & throwing out some of the physical aspects of that great singers technique,I like to raise a little noise with my old pipes sometimes & appreciate the insight.I look forward to checking out your work when i can. Thamk you...🤘☢️🤘
One of the staple songs while roller skating in the 70s.
Dan could peel the paint the off the walls with his voice, then sing you to sleep with a lullaby.
A classic I always thought Canadian rock group til today
I got to cover this song in the last band I was in. The bass line was a joy to play.
Yaaaayyyy Beth, ye're finally gettin across the water tae the Kingdom of Rock n Roll, my home city of Dunfermline! 😃 Naz were good mates with my parents so they've been part of my life as long as I can remember. Dan had an absolutely amazing voice. Naz started as a SOUL band until one fateful night when Dan and a mate went out in The Toon to the Bellville Hotel, Johnsons if you ever clubbed over here, and Dan smashed his way through A BOTTLE AND A HALF OF BRANDY! THE NIGHT BEFORE A GIG!!!!! Well, when he woke up, very ill, his voice was screwed, he'd burnt out his vocal chords with the bad brandy! And THAT is how a Rock Star voice was born! Probably not advice you would give out in your lessons but that is what brought us Nazareth. Please check out MY rock star friends from the Toon now too Big Country, we've got more where they came from too!
This is so beautiful and sad. Love your reaction! ♥
Your reaction brings tears Beth. His voice is just incredible with its grainy nature, which in my mind, is what makes the song go from good to great!
Again Beth very informative
I've heard Dan was given the track to do the vocals but they were 2 octaves above anything he had sang before. It was an error but he pushed himself and found a new range of his voice. This song is magical.
🐰HOPPY EASTER Beth
Oh, I love this, had the album and listened all the time!! Great memories!
Loved them he was a brilliant singer another Scottish band I loved was slik which was first band midge ure fronted then he moved on to Ultravox which where equally amazing.
Definitely in my top 3 Power Ballads of all time! The lyrics are so crushing & heartbreaking. I tell you one thing, you feel that better with Dan McCafferty singing with his rasp than the Everly Brothers singing it. RIP Dan McCafferty….favorite lines: “love is like a flame…it burns you when it’s hot” 🔥 (he ain’t lyin) & “some fools think of happiness….blissfulness….togetherness, some fools fool themselves I guess, they’re not fooling me, I know it isn’t true, I know it isn’t true…love is just a lie, made to make you blue….LOVE HURTS” 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
My first concert back in 1985
All I can say is thank you for keeping this music alive !
Saw these guys..Blackfoot opened for them..Evansville, IN in '80 or '81..fantastic shiw by both bands...we wore out Hair of the Dog Album in high school!
They were my first "favorite band"... Highly recommend the song "Games". "Dream On" and "Love Leads to Madness" are great too
also I saw Nazarth live in Portland 1974
I don't think I've listened to this song since the late 80's. EPIC!
🤔dass wat day call''' a "Poser" yo'''
Absolutely phenomenal singer my favourite was always Whiskey Drinking Woman. Damn so many great Scottish singers....cheers
This songs meks me cry Beth 😭😭
Never got to hear/see Nazarath live. Amazing.. If it wasn't for the clapping I would have thought it was the studio version.
This was a classic slow dance song of my era.. usually the next(or before) song that would play was 'Take My Breath Away' by Berlin(1984).
Dan had an amazing voice.. sad to hear he passed away only a few yrs ago.
This song was also in Dazed and Confused which is awesome as well
They were one of the best live bands I had the pleasure of seeing.
Felice Bryant was a co/writer on this hit. It took a while but she finally got her due!!!!!
Great break down of a classic song.
Total classic
My throat hurts.. after I sing this at karaoke! 😂 great review!!
You really need to hear the Gram Parsons (with Emmylou Harris) version. Stunning duet. I didn't know the original or Roy Orbison version, but I can hear moments on here where he's channeling that version.
Takes me back in time to slow dances as a teen…. Way back when… great song and memories
Thanks for a great video. I did not know that The Everly Brothers did it first. My favorite song of theirs was Joni Mitchell's( Canadian like me ) This Flight Tonite , Have a wonderful day and a Happy Easter
My favorite version of this song is by Gram Parsons featuring Emmylou Harris, but this is a very close second. Both wring every ounce of emotion out of the lyrics.
beautiful
Love hurts, love this song ****** ;)
Back in the day, bought the album for Hair of the Dog, stayed for Love Hurts, was presently surprised by some of the other tracks.
With all due respect, I love you!!!
Loved seeing Nazareth a lot back in the 70's. They were, along with Blue Oyster Cult, Ted Nugent, Boston and Foghat, seemingly playing every big outdoor concert every Summer.
The only band that you listed that I didn't see in concert was Boston. A great list.
@@thancrow Still seeing all the others is very good. Actually I can only remember a little of the Boston concert. I'm not sure which summer concert it was. 😊
This was a huge number 1 hit in South Africa. Loved it in the 1970's, love it in 2024!
It is life!!!!
'Vila i frid' Dan
Still epic🇸🇪
Wish I could dance with you to that song. You are great .
/ A Swede
Okay, I love this channel. You not only earned a new subscriber, but you're going to be homework for one of my guitar students who wants to sing. Bravo.
I would love to hear what your analysis of Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde. I recommend Heal It Up, Help Me, or Run, Run, Run. Wouldn't mind hearing you analyze Dave Vanian from The Damned. Maybe something off Phantasmagoria or Anything. I always wanted to sing like Dave and play guitar like Billy Duffy. Ironically, once I learned to sing it was from imitating a cross between Ian Astbury and Ethel Merman, and once I learned to play, I sound more like Captain Sensible.
I grew up listening to this song in AOR radio. Then I heard the Gram Parsons / Emmylou Harris version as an adult and _then_ became a fan of the song.
As far as I could find out, they played live in this show of the Austrian tv.... Once again, thanks for your fine videos....
Saw them on home turf, literally, at East End Park in Dunfermline.
Back in the 70s this song was played over and over, wore out the vinyl and my voice after breaking up with my first love, now at 62 years old I still wear out my voice singing it on karaoke night , it’s usually one of the last one of the night . This song and “Mandy”by Barry Manalow go together
