It's almost like Sonic, where people stuck through the bad stuff because they were passionate about the franchise; unlike Sonic, however, RWBY often frequent highs.

@Skythan I'd be it, kinda bad and unexpected but sure. I mean, yea your MAIN CHARACTER needs growth...but seeing it just suddenly happen in volume 9 makes it feel so forced.
I think they've could've done it at a better time as well. Like damn, Ruby had to be a vibe killer (Then again Yang x Blake is basically one of many gripes people have with this series.) I feel like they're could've at least done it at the beginning of Volume 9 or something.
But I don't really like the concept of mental breakdown=character growth. It kinda sends a bad message in my eyes especially to the people who've actually gone through it. The mental breakdown just feels so forced....nothing about it invokes any type of sympathetic emotion other then just kinda giggling seeing Jaune and Ruby going back and forth. . .but other then that. . .I fail to see the point of it.
Not only did it fail as a emotional moment...but they do nothing with it. It just seems like everyone glosses over what just happened as if it was just a minor inconvenience.
This "character growth" doesn't show any "growth" at all.

Rwby fans are originally from thumblr that think only trauma can develope a character. Heck how many of this folks keep waiting for ruby to loose an eye.
RWBYs problem is that it's suffering from an identity crisis. It doesn't know if it wants to be a campy over the top action series, or a serious drama. They bring up serious real world issues like racism, abusive relationships, PTSD, war, trauma, etc., and yet they never go into real depth about them. The writers of RWBY are not qualified to talk about subjects like these, they act like they understand these issues and try to teach us about them through this show, but they clearly don't and it makes them look very ignorant.
To Sum it up, RWBY was fun when Monty Oum was at the helm, but without him it has become a pretentious mess.

I'm a RWBY fanfiction writer, and while I've known the show has been crap for a long time, I still enjoy the fan art and fanfiction. I've made thousands of readers happy over the years, and I've helped more than a few writers as well, but seeing an outsider's perspective and Charlie so eloquently describing how crap RWBY is nowadays kinda hurts. I don't necessarily think I've wasted my time, but I can't help but feel that way sometimes. Just sad all the way around.

That was the whole *point.* The mercy killing was the thing that *no one* could bring themselves to talk about. "Poor Communication Kills." Combined with various (sometimes contrived, sometimes not) circumstances that diverted the other character's attention away from Ruby's slow disintegration...and that's how you get there.

All it takes to notice how bad the show has gotten is the realization that shipping has priority over everything for example, wasp(formerly known as bumblebee) has overtaken everything to the point where more people talked about two characters kissing than any other part of volume 9. Then there’s fact that most character arcs or deaths start to seem worse as time goes on…if there’s any development for the character that is.

Salem is able to reform herself from _nothing_ and shrugs off having her torso exploded outwards and her skull caved in, all with nothing more that a disappointed scowl. Even pools of infinite destruction were unable to break the Gods' curse on her, and only served to corrupt her into a being of infinite life _and_ a desire for destruction.
2. That's _exactly_ the point. For added context (and bear with me here), Salem was a bit like Rapunzel, locked in her tower until a knight rescued her. She and the knight, Ozma, fell in love, but he ends up dying from an illness. Salem asks the God of Light to revive him, gets rejected, then goes to the God of Darkness to ask for the same. He agrees, as he's grateful that someone has _finally_ come to talk to him. The God of Light then arrives, the two brothers trying to undo each others' work by killing and reviving Ozma in front of Salem, before the God of Light reveals that Salem only went to his brother _after_ she was rejected; realising he'd been betrayed, the God of Darkness kills Ozma one last time, and the God of Light curses Salem with immortality to prevent her from reuniting with him. Salem is told that, until she learns to respect the balance between life and death, she will remain alive "for as long as this world turns."
Salem then goes around the world, telling people that she had "stolen" immortality from the Gods and convincing them to do the same. When humanity attacks them, the God of Darkness vaporises everyone on the planet, leaving Salem completely alone, and both Gods depart.
Eventually, the God of Light decides to give humanity another chance, resurrects Ozma to reincarnate whenever he dies, gives him four Relics, and tells him that the Brothers will come back to judge humanity when the Relics are reunited. If humanity is at peace, then the Gods will return and bring magic back; if humanity is still at war with each other, then the Gods will judge them irredeemable and destroy the planet.
After Salem and Ozma reunite in the living world, they start a family. When it turns out that _their_ children can use magic, whereas the rest of humanity 2.0 can't, Salem proposes that she and Ozma kill the current humans and replace them with their own. Ozma disagrees, and they fight each other in a battle that kills their daughters.
tl;dr Salem's plan is to divide humanity and reunite the Relics, which would cause the Gods to judge humanity poorly and destroy the planet; she's doing this because she wants to die.
Now, onto the main answer. Ozma, currently known as Ozpin, has spent the last several thousand years trying to unite humanity, as well as keeping the Relics from Salem. His win condition is for humanity to be united when the Relics are brought together, and that is the main conflict of RWBY. Salem _cannot_ be killed, so the only thing the heroes can do is _undermine_ her; she divides people from the shadows, so RWBY's plan is to make sure that _everyone_ knows about her plan to destroy the world and uniting humanity by giving them a common enemy.
Just build a rocket and yeet her into the sun.

Vine died to save his team mates as they couldn't find a different way to get the bomb off the ship so its self sacrifice
Penny dies to get winter maiden power out of her into Winter so Cinder can't get steal it from her so her death was much more of a "greater good" type death

All of the above moment have issues and problems with them narratively, most of all Penny's, but to say that all 3 of them are just the same "edgy suicide" is like looking at Apples, Oranges and Bananas and just saying "well they are all fruit". I think Pyrrha dying was planned from the get go as she was already powerful and her character had nowhere else to go really. I think rwby was ruined when there was 3 seasons of bumbling around doing fuck all as we get exposition dump after dump and shaking of the character traits established in previous seasons to make each of the main 4 a block of wood as the side character cluster eats up more and more screen time.
I mean Pyrrha was actually made to die, looking at her inspiration and how she was written, hell her name, she's a walking death flag character. Of the many random things of RWBY, that's definitely not it
I loved Pyrrha and she is still my favorite character (besides Jaune). Her death should have impacted everyone way more. The JNPR manga has so many scenes that should have been in the show. It is so disappointing but I do highly recommend the manga (Shine vol. 5).
You can't watch something from a random moment in the series without context or build up of what's going on, how they got here, etc. Then expect to enjoy it and it to make sense.

@@puppetstudio4989 Aren't trailers designed to interest you with something that doesn't need explaining or explains itself? Trailers have build up and are specifically chosen, right? From my perspective, a trailer has funny bits and/or cool action shots, mini-exposition: a summary of who they are, is this a fictional Earth/world, maybe a realisation from the MCs when they're at rock bottom and how they move on from that, etc., etc. Chapter 7 has none of that, so I don't think it's a good starting point for Charlie to talk about RWBY

the story in volume 9 is much more consistent and less crappier because rooster teeth isn’t attempting to correctly write 49 different characters XD. they FINALLY get to work on the 4 main characters of the show for once

Animation has gotten better besides fights, but man the awkward pausing in convos and just poorly articulated tone in the volumes has just highlighted how good rwby could have been when we get a 40 second span of good story

This show ain't great, but its not terrible either. Ive been watching it and i still find enjoyment out of it. The music is still good. (Although season 8 felt a little lackluster. And now Jeff Williams retired and the soundtrack is now being composed by Casey Lee Williams and Martin Gonzalez, so im curious how they'll handle it). Out of context this does seem dumb, but when watching the whole thing, there is something there still good. But at this point, the fanbase and haters have made you feel like either love or hate it, no soft opinions on it. It decent, but Rooster Teeth's reputation has not helped it
Eh, the writing could certainly be classified as "terrible" but it does have a lot of fun ideas (shame about the execution tho).
I can certainly see how someone would enjoy it, although it's important to mention that enjoying a show doesn't necessarily mean the writing is good.
I have the same feeling, damn finally good to see someone whos realistic with the show but enjoys the best parts of it (few) like myself. It seems that the team cant get the entire show good enough so each volume has one aspect such as the base animation really well done but the tone or awkwardness of story just pull the show back down to mediocrity
Same here honestly. A lot of people just have strong tastes like Charlie and other internet people. The writing is terrible, and plot holes are fucking everywhere. But the ideas are honestly kind of there. I enjoy the creative side characters, the weapons they use, the plot twists, and bonding between characters that they have. Hence, there’s not a lot OF it, but when it does happen, it hits. Long story short, there are definitely times where this show is actually worth watching. It’s just inconsistent.
Vol 1-3 still weren't great, but it was forgivable, it was a small internet passion project from dudes who just wanted to make their own anime. It was endearing and the fights were glorious.
But with Vol 4+ Rooster Teeth are trying to be big boy animation studio, Crunchyroll contracts and all. Unfortunately for them, that comes with big boy criticism.

Charlie dosent realize the whole world is a fantasy crazy Alice in wonderland trap. Like the show has been going spiral downward for awhile but this season has actually focused on RWBY and developed them instead of just random shiz.

Critical should give it a watch. The fans aren't exactly being very welcoming though. I think he kinda misunderstands the Ruby edge moments because he has no context on why she's breaking down. Most people have no issues with his opinions whether he likes the show or otherwise. Some of the things they said to him on Twitter is horrid, not surprised though.
there's no context that will save it. the dialogue is simply trite. it's like a child's idea of how adults would write teenagers.
It doesn’t matter what the context is, the show is boring as fuck. Everything after volume 3 is just talking heads and that would be fine if the dialogue didn’t suck

Have you not watched the past _everything?_ Since Volume 1, Ruby has been trying to live up to the idealised version of her mum in her head; sometimes she gets things right, but as the series goes on and more things are at stake, the more frequently she fails, which pushed her to save more and more people and take bigger risks that have a greater chance of backfiring.
Ruby spends the entirety of Volume 9 having every single one of her failures thrown at her with no space in-between, all whilst her friends keep saying "don't worry about it, we'll deal with it later" whenever anyone has a concern. It all culminates in her being physically and mentally abused into taking her own life, and you're telling me that there was no build up to that? You clearly haven't been paying attention to the way Ruby became increasing unsure of herself over the last few Volumes.
Nah, he shouldn't, were running a risk that he would get stockholm syndrome like the rest of the fandom, it's simply not worth it.

I think it's funny people defend rwbys animation by saying that it's the shows style to look bad but no it was made by a handful of people back in the day which is why it looks like garbage and rooster teeth are so cheap and lazy they want to keep the show looking like crap when they really should of raised the bar with the animation considering how big RWBY has gotten.

Doesn't _everything_ when you don't have the full context? The Paper Pleasers want to Ascend, to make themselves better and more suited to their purpose. The blonde man, Jaune, has spent about 20 years alone and dealing with the trauma of having to assist a friend in their suicide, and believes that Ascension is just death. He doesn't understand that it's _not,_ that it's a needed part of the Ever After's lifecycle, so he relentlessly spends his time preventing them from Ascending, first by keeping them away from the Tree that does the Ascending, then by keeping them out of danger and stopping their "suicide" attempts.
It's _really_ not that edgy; it's just an allegory for someone who's so traumatised by loss that they can't see how stifling their protectiveness is.

I loved volume 9 chapter 7, seeing Ruby breakdown… haha… it did put a smile on my face.
Her character just became worse and worse as the show went on imo.

In early seasons, Ruby showed all the psychological markers of a child with very high levels of resilience, due to having successfully coped with trauma early in life. The last several seasons have actually emotionally undeveloped her through crappy writing and complete ignorance of the psychology of personality.
It was a reckoning long delayed, but hey, it's here.
In Ex-arm’s defense, the writing (manga) is arguably better than RWBY. RWBY failed in both aspects, Ex-arm anime has been unfortunately butchered by the wrong studio

What even is this show anymore?
I got into the series only after Vol 3 finished. Never really thought it was good, but I still liked the world it _tried_ to set up, and I've developed a weird appreciation for the series' "at least you tried" vibe.
Ironically the new polished visual style since Vol. 4 makes the show look boring. What's worse is that the barebone but kinda fun story took a nosedive in a long-running pathetic attempt to make us take the show seriously.

Here is my opinion of RWBY,
Seasons 1 - 3 came across as a fun well animated youtube series, so for what it was it was actually good for a western animated production.
Every other season with maybe the exception of season of 9 was complete utter trash, with too many issues to count.
Even the fight animations are all style over substance, the fights themselves don't flow or really tell any compelling story.
I think it's very rare when the characters actually had to use any sense of ingenuity to overcome a significantly more powerful enemy in an impossible fight.
It felt like the show decided to take a more serious theme which uninevitably made it comparable to many popular anime that does everything they are trying to do 10 times better.
RWBY can't even compete with lower tier anime like Asterisks war let alone any heavy hitter like demonslayer or jujutsu kaisen!

I had just finished season 9, I’ve been keeping caught up because I need some closure, it’s a weird form of closure that I need.
This season was interesting, exploring rubys mental state on her actions up to this point, throughout the show it’s been implied that she is bottling up a lot of self loathing and a lot of mental issues (idk i just work here) and it was a decent concept, but I don’t fully understand why we had to go through Alice and wonderland. Would’ve been a lot cooler if it was done in the real world and not fantasy shit
From a writing perspective, by removing the characters from the stakes at hand you're forcing them to confront other things. So, can't fight the big bad of the show because you're trapped somewhere else and to escape this other place you conveniently need to confront your inner demons. It's also there to juxtapose the dark topics at hand, a land full of whimsy and wonder with people in it going through a lot of mental issues such as imposter syndrome, survivors guilt, depression caused by a myriad of issues.
Plus, the whole show has had references to fairy tales since the beginning, this is just more in your face about it.
@@TheJamieellis I’m not saying the idea is bad at all, I like when characters have to deal with there own issues and sometimes are forced to see there issues, infact I enjoyed jaune and his growth a lot, he always had leader issues and when Pyrrha died that totally fucked with him, not to mention Nora getting hurt also messed with him. So him getting the lesson that even as a leader things can still hurt your team or hurt the things you protect and that sometimes that pain is necessary is a great lesson for him, gave me a lot of vibes like “who lives who dies who tells your story” from Hamilton. It just felt like the idea was there but the execution wasn’t pulled through. Like it hardly explained why the void they fell in landed them in a wonderland esc place. Especially since it was told and assumed to simply be a random pocket dimension with no use outside of the wish made. I also know that rwby had roots in fairy tale inspirations I’ve religiously fed on all the dev stuff of this show when season 2 and three came out, I’ve seen this show from beginning to end on multiple occasions and just, some of the writing doesn’t stick, feels a lot of first drafty and it also feels they are very quick to change ideas mid season. Like penny getting the winter maiden powers was an awesome idea, I loved that arc and it made it feel like penny grew into a character, but literally next episode she dies and Wynter takes it, it felt like that was done just ti give the fan community who for a small time thought Wynter was winter because of a name coincidence. I wish the writing had abit more thought into it, or at the very least had more people rereading and proofing. It’s all potential but it doesn’t feel like it’s ironed out and crafted with enough care to really feel like a good narrative.

@@TheJamieellis I didn't mind the idea of Alice and Wonderland but I think it was always a risk and they executed it poorly, my main issues were 1 by design it cuts out most of the cast hyper focusing on the 4 mains which isnt bad in itself but is a slight handicap which limits the story, another bigger issue is because it happened in "the ever after" it all feels less real, idgaf about the paper ppl, I didn't need to know about the brothers origin story they were cool enough as it was, and I didnt give a f about the mouse death which they spent like a 3 min scene on.
The only tangible change is Neo is out of the story, and I gotta say the whole thing was disappointing, idk I always have thought of Rwby as a fighting show, sure they tell some pretty good stories but first and foremost should be 1v1s of powerful hunters and epic grim monster battles, this is where Rwby shined with epic fights with cool powers and weapons, but in v9 there were like 3 and a halfish fights, Chess fight, Jabawalker fight, ruby at the tea party, and rwby vs cat, not one good 1v1, the best fight being the rwby vs cat but that fight is by far the weakest end of season fight out of all of them, v1-v8 end of season fights were all better imo and the number of fights is probably double or even triple the amount we got in v9

When RWBY finally landed on the island, years after John, they distracted him from protecting them. So they managed to die.
Honestly explaining this clusterfuck of a show is difficult.

The only reason many of the fans are still holding on to the show is BECAUSE of the foundation Monty laid (nothing more). We’re trapped in this dumpster fire because we can’t bring ourselves to leave without seeing it’s ending. Believe me, 50% of its community praises the show, and 50% of it watches just to dunk on it.
It’s really more of a love/hate relationship than anything.

Okay I can understand criticism about the animation style and if you didn't like the story that's fine but it's odd to me to jump into the latest season and saying you don't understand what's going on or sounds goofy.
Well if you actually watched it to now you would know the context that they're in a fairytail world where the characters are having a hard accepting what's going on. It's odd for them because it's a fairytail and depression on Ruby finally boiled over at this point.

It's story is ass, but Charlie is missing context. It's Alice in Wonderland and Jaune is currently filling 2 roles. The worst part is, this has been the best season since Monty has passed.
I think people make RWBY out to be bigger than it really is, especially the creators. Rooster Teeth is all but shut down and if RWBY was really that popular, I think it would have carried the company. Besides the company was terrible. They hilariously dropped Vic Mignogna over accusations only for it to be revealed a year later that the founders were actually doing all the things Vic was accused of. Such hypocritical garbage. That's the funny thing though, quite often the real terrible ones are the ones trying to hide their skeletons by virtue signaling.

Being a fan of RWBY that actually just likes the show for no other reason than, I just like it is really hard. Also this scene is excellent after a long build-up to Ruby and Jaune's argument. Jaune has been there for a looooong time. He wants to feel like a hero and has come a long way from volume 1. Ruby has been the one to pick everyone up after every loss (and there's been a lot of loss) and now she's lost it. I wish people would just let us fans enjoy it and move on from shitting on it despite not watching. Volumes 6-9 (nice) are genuine improvements and have consistently gotten better, and now with volume 9, I really think it's gotten great

Which is not to argue against you enjoying the show. A show doesn't need to be good in order for someone to enjoy it. But just because a show is enjoyable to some doesn't mean the writing is good.

I found a channel of someone making hours upon hours of videos criticising RWBY, but at the same time, praising shows like Rings of Power and the Kenobi show, which is fair enough, but you can also find others who despise those shows and who make hours upon hours criticising those shows the RWBY critic liked. It's quite subjective.
You know, one thing I never got about Jaune’s attitude to the paper people in Vol. 9 is why is he so focused on keeping people who want to reincarnate alive.
Like… wouldn’t it make more sense if he’d just become very protective of Team RWBY, his actual teammates, or the other friends they found? Technically speaking, I didn’t watch the series-just read it up on Wikipedia, but even in this clip it doesn’t make a lot of sense he’d be so dedicated to people he’s known for a shorter time than his so-called friends.
And why didn’t this happen immediately after Vol. 3? Pyrrha’s death, and the fall of Beacon, could have made him incredibly paranoid of losing anyone else, but he’s just occasionally more glum.
Honestly, it feels like even when the writers do something that has been done multiple times in other stories, they still don’t commit to going all the way and/or just don’t get what makes those events work in other stories (or at least, why people *choose* to add them in, for better or worse).
It's mostly because of his trauma over having the kill Penny, and he wanted to save something for once so he took up the job of being their protector.

Honestly, it feels like not only do the writers have no idea what they want to do with Jaune, but it feels like when the writers kill off a character, they have next-to-no idea of what that means for the larger story. It's like it's not even done for shock value--just done to fill out a "check-list" the writers have on hand.

He used the Paper Pleasers to both keep himself sane and to deal with the trauma he had gathered, ignoring their wishes to reincarnate. It was intended to be messed up to show how deteriorated Jaune's mind had become.
He does still think of Pyrrha, like when he hesitated against her illusion The Curious Cat made. Penny was one of the many failiures he stewed over while alone in the Ever-After.

I've enjoyed Vol 9 for the most part, but volumes 5-8 were difficult to watch. Did not like how they handled Ironwood among other issues.
5 was alright. It wasn't until 6-8 that things really started to get shoddy.

Charlie only watching clips of Volume 9 doesn't make sense to me. I enjoy RWBY Volume 9 and the plot is pretty simple (Volume's almost done) but you have to actually watch the volume to understand what's happening because they're currently in a different world with its own rules.

Charlie's takes are all over the place. Sometimes he has some good ones and then sometimes he's just sat there going "I don't get it". Yes Charlie, it's because you're watching a 3 minute clip from partway through episode 7 of the 9th season of the show. Why exactly do you expect you'll just get it with no additional context for what's been going on? And honestly RWBY has had its ups, and a lot of downs as well. But volume 9 has been largely solid so far. A lot more focused and better paced than a lot of previous seasons. It's really struggled before with spreading itself too thin, trying to work with too many characters and too many plot points in a single season. And they're short episodes too, so a lot of things were inevitably rushed. Narrowing the focus of this season to team RWBY + Jaune and a more straightforward and linear goal has really helped tighten the writing up.
Sadly its become a trend to only watch out of context clips and then proceed to take a dump all over something. And yes, its fucking stupid.

@@Standard489 I think what drives people to watch it was the plot and world building. But for me, it's always underwhelming when I watch it. When you expected something cool to happen, but then they screwed up with the execution and the scenes fell flat. They often build up to something only for them to not deliver.
As for me, it's always the cool choreography and how the characters interact with each other. At least that was the way it used to be. I don't feel like that towards the show anymore.
