I joined them on my first playthrough because I thought the imperials would have just sent me back to an execution, as an argonian. I thought it was weird that you'd be forced to side with the racist faction after a while and after I saw the stormcloaks replace Balgruuf, I immediately regretted it and searched for a work around. After realising that I could join the imperials I've never looked back.
