i just painted my cabinets, and i had several ppl talk me into getting satin even though i wanted semi gloss. well, i listened to them, but changed my mind and had my painter use the semi over the satin. i like semi for wood, and i realize im in the minority. thx for the great info.
Great tips, thank you! Your mention of the relationship between ceiling, wall, and trim sheen gave me a thought--have you done any videos on ceiling colors? I know white tends to be the standard, but in what situations would it be reasonable and fun to do something like matching the ceiling with the walls, or trying another non-white accent color? How likely is that to feel overwhelming in a room, or in what situations might it backfire and make the room feel claustrophobic? It's something I've been considering, but I haven't seen it done much in practice.
I had warm tan walls with sky blue ceilings in one of the homes I owned. It didn't make the room look smaller or shorter, though the walls were more than 8'. It was lovely. I also painted the interior of all closets sky blue. It was such a nice surprise when you opened the door. Now, I don't think I'd do it. I'm much less flashy color-wise, I guess.
This is really great! I currently work at a Benjamin Moore retailer and what we also recommend as a minimum sheen for bathrooms is the Regal Select - Pearl, just in case the Aura Bath & Spa is a little bit out of the budget or is just out of stock (paint shortages and all). Love the content!
The builder used sherwin williams flat finish in light grey color on our walls in the entire home. The wall gets very dirty and . I bought a gallon of same paint and touched up wherever I see the marks. Now in the light the touch up shows really bad. What is your recommendation. Do I need to paint the whole wall with another finish or what do your recommend. Would appreciate your help. Gigi
I live in a cottage with three huge windows that are old and have metal squares with trim painted white. With the windows so big I have very little wall space. My question is should I paint the trim around the windows with a semi gloss paint in the same shade as the walls which will have a matte finish?
Cannot say how much I appreciate all of your videos, but this one is SO helpful. Keep the technical info coming. Keep the color analysis coming. Oh heck, just keep doing what you do so well.
I have been watching your videos pretty much nonstop since I moved into my new home almost 4 months ago. Color for north facing rooms, color in general, etc... I love your videos. I found 3 five gallon paint containers in the garage and they are all satin (insert several crying faces here) I have always painted in flat because I don't like the wet cave look. I have seen beautiful shiney rooms in other peoples houses but not something I could live with every day. I don't wash walls I just touch up. Do you have videos about how to go from one sheen to another? I'm retired and on a budget so I need to be able to do it myself. If you use high quality paint can you paint flat over satin? is there a product I can just roll on the walls to degloss?
If I am going for a dark or medium charcoal/black and want to paint the trim and chair rail the same color, what sheen should I use for the trim. I will be using a matte for the walls
James I love your videos! I am moving into a small, west facing condo. Can I use in my windowless kitchen Sherwin Williams high reflective white for cabinets and walls? PLEASE HELP ME.
Question: Kilz 2 primer is pretty dead flat and covers well - could it substitute for a ceiling paint, or, is there a reason to use a ceiling paint vs a primer for ceilings?
Hi James, I love having a paint guru!! We have a two bedroom, 2 bath eleven sq feet condo that we want to repaint. Contenders are Urbane Bronze & Alabaster White with AW as main color & UB as accent wall in bedroom & bathrooms. Will this be to much contrast? What would you suggest. Thanks, Sharon Putman
Hi Sharon! Great choices, I don't think too much of a contrast at all. It's a modern take on a black and white look but with a lot more warmth. I think it will look great!
Hi there. Great video! We're painting shiplap walls in our bathroom in two weeks. I wanted to use Ben Moore's Matte Aura Bath & Spa but the Ben Moore color consultant and my painter suggest satin. Thoughts? I didn't think satin for walls -- seems like a shiny wood look? Would really appreciate your advice!!
Hi there Arlene, it’s purely an aesthetic decision I would say. Aura bath and spa matte is a great choice for bathrooms even on shiplap, and will give you more of a chalky finish compared to the shinier satin look. Normally the preference is to go flatter on the walls, even in bathrooms, but a satin finish on shiplap is actually pretty common because you could equate it to your trim and woodwork which would also be a shinier finish anyway. Hope that helps!
I'm wanting to paint the shiplap up my fireplace wall in sw tricorn black. I'm inbetween these sheens. Our livingroom has vaulted ceilings and large windows, which would you reccomend?
Hi Tris, yes, satin finishes are more washable so sometimes that's attractive in spaces like kitchens and bathrooms, but as I said above, the higher sheen might highlight imperfections. You could also consider an eggshell finish. And yes, the consensus of the Paint People team is that Dulux is a great paint!
In the past we've used Satin finish. When we moved into our new home, I chose one of the less expensive brands of Benjamin Moore paint for our living room & entryway w/ high ceilings. It didn't come in Satin, so I had to go with Eggshell. Hindsight is 20/20. I wish I had paid a little more for a Satin kind of finish (is it Pearl in BM paint?). The Eggshell is hard to clean! The dirt is noticeable but so are the attempts to clean it! Thankfully we're past the small children stage. My husband and I just do our best not to touch the walls. Really disappointed in this finish especially for a BM paint. I do love the color (Edgecomb Gray), and this finish isn't bad as long as you never touch or get anything on the wall, but boy, do I wish i had spent a little more and gotten a more durable finish.
I crave that deep teal living room with the vertical wood detail!

It's all personal style! I'm all for having fun and doing what you like!
I love matte walls
Great video! Answered so many questions in one video.
Glad it was helpful!
So should I pick Matte or eggshell for my walls?
Great tips, thank you!

I been painting for a long time now and when you do that it just makes the room or area feel smaller or shorter just my opinion when I did it

Is this a commercial?

I’m wanting eggshell. But what if somt come in a eggshell. Like emerald. Go to matte or satin ?

And you keep doing what you do Jill! Being great!
I’m a great fan of your videos. Thank you for the amazing suggestions. I have utilized your knowledge of paint, paint colors and applications.
Hey thanks Maurya! So glad you've found them helpful.
Nice Benjamin Moore ad.
Can you tall who sponsored this video?? Or many you are just a big Benjamin Moore fan!
I think you should make a video on Fragrance or Paint which shall I choose? 😁 I miss you Fragrance reviews.
Dang it. Hard to get BM paint around here, I can get Sherwin Williams. Possibly Duration Matte for the bathroom walls?
Thanks for the vid , will flat acrylic paints peel off when dried on top of painters tape like gloss paints do?

Hi Verna! Not to worry, should be fine to paint flat over satin, although a paint that is 100% acrylic would be best. Hope that helps!
Oh you’re awesome! Thank you so much for answering my question 🙋🏻♀️ 🥰

I have satin on my walls. Cam I paint over with a matte with no issues ?

Considering something similar. Im a ways away. Let me know how it goes!!! Good luck!
Hi - I have seen a few ads on PPG Ultralast.
Do you have an opinion on the product?
Heeeey! What's the bathroom paint color!? 👀

I think it's BM Chelsea Gray.

Hi Tina, I think the Matte in that color would look cool!
Do interior designers use satin finishes on walls? Is dulux a good paint brand?

It seems that Bm matte finishes are much flatter than just a year ago.😟
Will you speak to magnolia home paints.
I'm in Canada so it's not as readily available here unfortunately.
What is the base color for Marilyn's dress, and would it clash with sweatshirt gray? Love this channel.
Hi Pat! They both lean blue, and I think they'd pair nicely together.
Bro, you didn’t even talk about scuff x?
Did not even mention eggshell
Yes he did at 6 min
Usually love your vids. I wish you had put this was a Ben Moore sponsored vid up front.
I feel so dumb. All this time I thought _eggshell_ was a color and not a finish lol
I wish you were in my town you could help me paint my man cave I have to do the laundry room and a small bathroom in the basement as well
Just choose what you like and feels good to you.

Ive heard nothing but bad things about aura bath. 😮
I would rather err on the conservative side and put semi gloss in a bathroom. I’m a landlord and I don’t care if it doesn’t look like an Art gallery!
Great to have the point of view of a Landlord! Thanks Amy!
Never had a durable Matt. When will people tell the truth, as this lie is expensive
Benjamin Moore’s matte sheen…💋🤌🏾
Can I use Ben Moore flat finish on garage ceilings? Will eggshell be okay with garage walls? I'm not planing on working on cars or having a workshope?
I wouldn't go for flat on the walls, but for the ceilings it's probably okay. Eggshell is good for the walls, it's a little more durable.

Sorry to hear that lrb. Congrats on being past the small children stage lol
@@thepaintpeople 😁There are days I miss those little handprints!...and days I don't:)
Flat and matte just look so cheap and commercial in homes. It screams crappy rental.
