@@sircxx8621 more like you can blame Stephen Hendry. Jimmy played his best snooker against Hendry remember when he was 9-0 in the final twice in 2 years against Hendry. Hendry under pressure was a sensation though didn't have the excitement of Jimmy but what a player. Was always horrible watching Jimmy got to peices but at his best a total joy.
I loved watching Jimmy in the '80s, and early '90s. He was the most exciting player out there for many years. We all know about him losing his 6 world finals, but to get to 6 is an achievement in itself, and apart from John Parrott, who played perfect snooker in those first 8 frames, he lost 1 against Steve Davis who was at his peak at the time, and the others to the second greatest player of all time. Jimmy won both the masters and the UK, he was number 2 in the world rankings for quite a long time. In 1984, he won the Masters, got to the world finals, where he was beaten 18-14 to Steve Davis, which wasn't such a bad result, as the previous year, Davis had thrashed World number 2 Cliff Thorbourn 18-5, and I remember watching it, Jimmy was playing very attacking for a world final, if he had just played with a touch more safety he could have won. He also won the world doubles that year, with Alex Higgins. Jimmy was one of the best players in 1984. He went on to win 10 ranking titles, aswell as a masters, also, there was no where near as many tournaments back then. He was an entertainer, and so good to watch.
A good analysis, and he was a great player. It’s a shame he didn’t get at least one world championship. By “second greatest player of all time” you must mean Hendry. Presuming Ronnie is the greatest in your opinion - as he would be in the opinion of many. It’s subjective, but I think Hendry was the greatest ever for that relentless streak in the nineties. Although he didn’t have the longevity of O Sullivan. He did seem to have Whites number though.
Jimmy was also my favourite player to watch back in the day along with his good mate Alex Higgins. His talent was easily good enough to win multiple world titles, and he had beaten every player he lost world finals to on a number of occasions, but psychologically he always seemed to crumble when the pressure was really on. Either by rushing and making a daft mistake, or taking on shots that were far too risky, and eventually running out of luck. Hendry was an absolute machine back in the 90s. He had that coolness and ruthlessness under pressure that always seemed to elude White, and never took risks. Made him much less exciting to watch, but ultimately more successful.
@@googleuser2571I think Jimmy was a likeable character. I loved watching him play. He would be on the black to make a century and instead of just simply potting it he would sometimes smash it around the cushions, if it went into 1 of the pockets the crowd would go berserk. A great entertainer. It's a shame he came across Hendry in 4 world finals. I regard O'Sullivan and Hendry as the 2 greatest players ever. Jimmy lost to one of the 2 greatest players ever. It's such a shame he didn't win just 1 world title, but I still look back on his playing in the '80s and early '90s very fondly. A true entertainer.👍
I remember his first ranking title Vs Cliff Thorburn, Mercantile Credit Classic. He won 13-12 and i missed next day of school as it ended late. Good old ITV lol He slowed down a lot in the 90s

What a legend. I don't care that he didn't win the world championship. He is a people's champion, great entertainer and not too shabby a snooker player!
I vividly remember back in 1994, when Jimmy lost his 6th World Championship final (again) to Hendry. I was sat on the stairs with my head in my hands disbelieving it could happen again. What a shame he never won Snooker’s biggest prize! 😩
Jimmy White is definitely one of the most intriguing snooker players. Left handed fast fluent style honed in the London snooker halls. Pale face, dark hair and quiet 'cockney' humble & likeable demeanour. Always reminded me of Edward Scissorhands for some reason. Plus the name 'Jimmy White', perfect for a snooker player. I always find it a shame that I was too young to enjoy watching snooker while he was in his prime. It's an even bigger shame that he never won the world championship. Still. He'll always be one of the greats.
Seen these all before but never tire of them too easy to forget what a quality player he was one of a few players who have kept it a Tv sport than one against Kirk Steven’s defying all logic spin wise so good
Nobody, not even Judd Trump, could emulate some of these shots. What makes it even more remarkable is the difference in quality of both snooker balls and cloth nowadays. To do that on those tables is phenomenal.
His masse shot to get out of the snooker set by Ronnie was on a tv show last year (2021) Jimmy almost hit it perfect, it just stopped before making contact, on the first go. Ronnie made twelve attempts and couldn’t get anywhere near. So when you watch it here, do notice that he just walks up and does it, no messing around.
its because it was to make a 147 break so each shot become 20 times harder with that pressure. Unfortunately Jimmy was never really that good under pressure
I say this as a fan of Jimmy way back from the early 80s, but this video mostly shows he was a GOD of cueball control - When the frame was won. Sadly, it wasn't so much fun for him when the pressure was on.
When Jimmy's head was right he was almost untouchable. He had moments when he was on a par with the unmatched Alex Higgins for raw talent. In fact when Alex won his first World Title in 1982 he got there by beating Jimmy in the semi-final. It was as close a match as you could get and Jimmy was a frame from victory. No-one but Alex could have come back at Jimmy like that. Jimmy was able to get to many quarters, semis and finals of the World Championship. But, he was unlucky to be in an era with giants like Alex Higgins, dominating players like Steve Davis and then Stephen Hendry and the odd one-off winner who happened to be on a golden streak. If he'd gotten out of his way a bit he would have walked away with at least two titles. He had the potential to take them all. But for all that he is still one of the greatest players ever and certainly the best to never become World Champion. Legend.
The shots that amaze me are when the while hits a ball and makes its way to the cushion, except when it bounces off it goes back the way it came, the amount of spin to do that is mad.
The worst thing for White was meeting the ‘King of the Crucible’ every time in the WC final. It made him appear to later generations as an average player which he was far from.
Never understand when people talk about "Old School Players".... Jimmy White will always be top of the class in my humble opinion for decades to come... ( Sorry Head boy)
The best ever. Quite literally mind bending re-invention of physics. And skill. To hit them that hard. That accurately. Judd Trump is a 15% successor to that. Brilliant, but this video shows the master 😀
When people say that if O'Sullivan was better mentally then he would have won more world titles it's daft because you don't win 6 world titles like O'Sullivan if you're suspect mentally. White is the player who this really applies to. He had every bit as much natural talent as O'Sullivan but didn't have the mental strength when push came to shove. Easily one of the best players to ever pick up a cue and his record as a 6 times world finalist proves it.
2:18. What is the announcer talking about when he says it "Is like one of those Victorian paintings?'' Is he talking about how the form of the masse shot and the table looks similar to that of an artists rendition of what a person playing snooker would look like?
1:05 You see here this is why he's probably the player with the most cue power we've seen. The action he's got on the cue ball here without really whacking it is unbelievable. if Trump did same shot cue would have ended up hitting the lampshade.
The fact that White never won the top accolade with such an abundance of skill and flair has to be one of, if not *the* greatest WTF's in the entire sporting arena.
In terms of sheer talent and ability, White at his peak remains one of the most skilled players to ever pick up a cue, IMO. Problem is his mental strength and self belief wasn't there. He'd always crumble under pressure and start making stupid mistakes, or repeatedly give his opponents chances by missing easy shots. Seen here doubling a black the full length of the table, pulling off 10ft long pots without touching the jaws, and seeming to have the cue ball on a string as he pulls off some absolutely ridiculous positional shots, yet when it really counted, and the pressure was on, he'd miss a straight red or snooker himself. If he could have got his mental game sorted, he'd have been a multiple world champion, there is no doubt about it.
@@SnifferDogBen shame he never got to be a world champion, unfortunately he,s too old for the game now, I would like to see him against big mouth Ronnie o sullivan
