  • Heating bread in an oxygen deficient atmosphere turns it into a carbon foam. Carbon foam is an excellent insulator and in this case, a workable foundry. 🔥Safety Squint T-Shirt! teespring.com/SafetySquints_us

That dross floating on the top is actually a good heat insulator. When making steel calcium oxide (burnt lime) is added as a flocculant, attracting impurities from the molten metal and keeping the heat in the ladle until the desired temperature is reached. To save energy costs the slag cap is only decanted immediately before the steel is poured. So could one make high carbon steel from mouldy bread?

When I was a wee child, the family and I would travel the miles to our local beach with pan, wicks and paraffin wax in hand to make sand candles. Using crayons for color we would melt our wax on a camp fire and pour the hot wax into small recesses in the sand that we would shape to hold the molten wax while it cooled. Adding interesting shells and drift wood for effect we would then sell these creations at the church bazaar. While waiting for the wax to cool we would swirl the crayons around for effect and add the wicks in various locations within the candle. Of course we would do this only in the wet sand area so the sand would hold it's shape long enough for the wax to cool but what creative fun we would have!

  • @cannibalholiday

I had mixed results with the bread I had on hand, so I figured I'd try some instant rice in a cannister (the porous stuff that's been pre-cooked and dried).
Holy shit! It bonds in the shape of the container. There was some warping as it shrank but I bet that could be fixed with a bit of experimentation.
So consider this -- carbon foam that you can cast! Just lay down a base of rice, place your shaping objects or cores, fill around it with rice, and heat. It all bonds together. :D
Woohoo! This is gonna be fun.

That cutting mat was brand new not that long ago. It sure has earned it's keep for such a short life span. It should be retired and hung on the shop wall as a reminder of all the bumblefuckery that took place on that bench over the last year or two..... or, auction it off on ebay to the highest bidding AvE groupie. That green cutting mat may hold the record for appearing in the most youtube thumbnails. That fucking cutting mat MAY be more famous than AvE himself!!!

"What you do not wanna do is put water on that."
Reminded of that time me and a mate were playing with bismuth, melting it over the stove. Made some lovely crystals and all. And then someone decides to re-melt a chunk of bismuth that had come in contact with water. It was dry, or so we both thought. So he tosses it into the crucible along with the rest of the nicely melted stuff.
The resulting explosion was impressively scary. To this day, there is still silver spatter on the ceiling tiles. And on the coat I was wearing. Fortunately it gets picked out of hair fairly easily, and what with the smallish half-kilo or so amount we were melting, and with the random number gods smiling down on us both, nobody came away looking like Freddy Krueger's less pretty grandpa.
Was a sharp reminder not to fuck around with water and melted metals though.
