- Heating bread in an oxygen deficient atmosphere turns it into a carbon foam. Carbon foam is an excellent insulator and in this case, a workable foundry. 🔥Safety Squint T-Shirt! teespring.com/SafetySquints_us

I'd like the tuna, on carbon foam please.
Adam, I'm a married man!
???
No crust.
It's Cajun!!!!
Adam Melancon milk steak
You've got an oven in the bun.
AvE that was gold
AvE have you had any liquid courage or green meanies tonight cuz you're on a roll
AvE At least you don't need much bread....Wait!
Raymond, that must have cost you some dough...
Alonzo Branson You know you kneed it!
'nobody panic'
was laughing my ass off at that
lol id be doing that anywhere but on my workbench myself.
YES AvE! You're my Hero 😱
Zaku186 at LEAST do it over some firebricks, or even derpier over a 1/4 sheet aluminum cake pan with a layer of sand in the bottom. Or geez, the bare pan! Or a large scrap of plywood! Anything besides a decent workbench surface!
Oh shiiiiiiit no body panic. Uh yeah bout that scorch mark it'll buff right out!
You can tell he practices that one often. We call that kind of timing "sphinctronization."
love it!
Apparently, I have to taste the foundry too. "Cody would"
Cody'sLab I have a few really really great ideas.
Hi Cody i l love your vidjeos
Cody'sLab plz do this
@@arduinoversusevil2025 Do a full proper casting with it
Finally, a use for my wife's cooking.
You better cast a Fleshlight cause you gonna need it after that comment.
bread? crucible. spaghetti? crucible. boiling water? you guessed it - crucible.
oldfrend ha ha ha fuck thats funny
Better to be handy than hungry?
oldfrend I don't know about a crucible, but I've heard spaghetti makes a good thermal lance.
I've never seen somebody cast aluminum on a wooden workbench.
What an interesting, unrelated fact.
*aluminimum, easy mistake. Sometimes I forget america isn't the only country out there.
My point was that his workbench isn't wooden.
jo jim you just did
jo jim My forge was made of wood and dirt...
This reminds me of that last video where you were worried about snagging the mat with the drill bit. No neat holes here. Just the dirty gaping maw of hellfire.
silvenshadow scrolled down to see who would beat me to this laugh. Related: where does one put a healing bench in need of healing?
"dirty gaping maw of hellfire"
Sounds like my ex...

OSHA be dammed, im forging my own weapons in my cubicle for the inter-office war!
burntjoint dear diary, I tried to get a head start. All that's left is a coffee maker, toaster, and fridge. They took the oven away six months ago when Phil tried melting down all the spare laptops for the precious metals that don't exist and Brent sent the microwave out the turd floor window last week when he didn't read the part on the package about letting lava pockets rest before eating. Gotta go. They are making rounds again. Someone just got pushed down the stairs.
NOCAREBEAR what kind of work do you do that everyone hates each other? Holy crap that's hilarious!!!! 😂
biker932012 🤣 I know right! I'm a fleet manager. You put a bunch of women in a cube farm they all start to hate each other. It's a revolving circus mixed with a touch of daytime soap operas.
that just office work laid bare.
My wife told me bread is supposed to be that color
Experimental Fun you "swallowed" that line too?
That's funny shit... Hey, at least she eliminated one of the steps out of the process for ya
bwahha
Must be Irish. Every time my mom made cookies she burnt a panful for our Irish neighbor who loved them that way.
hahahaha
That dross floating on the top is actually a good heat insulator. When making steel calcium oxide (burnt lime) is added as a flocculant, attracting impurities from the molten metal and keeping the heat in the ladle until the desired temperature is reached. To save energy costs the slag cap is only decanted immediately before the steel is poured. So could one make high carbon steel from mouldy bread?
“flocculant” is my new favorite word. I’m dying over here.
It all fun and games till you catch the cutting mat on fire
Dakota Swain fun fact: those mats are usually pvc; making them nearly inflammable.
inflammible? non-flammable? non-inflammable? anyway, the thing doesn't flam.
Nobody could have seen that coming.
I must be nobody lol
AvE who is this nobody and why isn't he making UA-cam videos?
Dogurasu turn the mat over, good as new!
When I was a wee child, the family and I would travel the miles to our local beach with pan, wicks and paraffin wax in hand to make sand candles. Using crayons for color we would melt our wax on a camp fire and pour the hot wax into small recesses in the sand that we would shape to hold the molten wax while it cooled. Adding interesting shells and drift wood for effect we would then sell these creations at the church bazaar. While waiting for the wax to cool we would swirl the crayons around for effect and add the wicks in various locations within the candle. Of course we would do this only in the wet sand area so the sand would hold it's shape long enough for the wax to cool but what creative fun we would have!
I had mixed results with the bread I had on hand, so I figured I'd try some instant rice in a cannister (the porous stuff that's been pre-cooked and dried).
Holy shit! It bonds in the shape of the container. There was some warping as it shrank but I bet that could be fixed with a bit of experimentation.
So consider this -- carbon foam that you can cast! Just lay down a base of rice, place your shaping objects or cores, fill around it with rice, and heat. It all bonds together. :D
Woohoo! This is gonna be fun.
Ain't no mat gonna self heal from that
RIP mat.
Eh, give it 20 years and we'll have self-healing mat absorbing nutrients from it's substrate and spreading to conquer all surface area.
My favorite part was that he didn't even think to put that tile under the bread until halfway through
Matt did heal! After a penicillin shot anyway.
@@warfreddy6968 It looks like that tile was under from the very start, camera angle hid it for most of the video though.
I love the laugh that starts this one.
Only AVE would use a loaf of bread as a crucible. Your range of knowledge is amazing.
Chrisbryant94 he used a can of tuna as the crucible.
I'm not an expert in foundry work, not even a little. Still watched, still stupid, but I was entertained!
Bumblefuckery at its finest!
Love it!
It's always funny seeing the marks from previous videos on the cutting mat. I think this one will be the most easily recognized however.
reminds me of the dead pixels on Photonicinduction's camera from all those high power laser "experiments"
"Probaly not good for my self healing mat"
Love this channel one of the best there is
I guess this catching on fire is the YEAST of his problems!
I knead to build this.
He must have got baked before he filmed this.
Ethan McKibbin Everytime there is something very hot involved, his views rise like a hot damn.
We were so busy wondering if we could, we never stopped to wonder if we should
theOriginalskillr Just because you shouldn't, doesn't mean you can't
unless you're doing unwanted damage to yourself or others, the answer to both questions is always an enthusiastic "why not?"
even if unwanted damage occurs, tis still a good question.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
What ww2?
Hands down the best casting video I've seen (apart from some on pornhub).
Well.. It aint metal casting, more "model casting".
lmgtfy.com/?q=pornhub+casting
Your innocence becomes you!
fucking looool
I did not need to imagine molten aluminum being poured into a vagina, but I did, and I'm blaming you.
As my grandmother would say "burnt toast makes your teeth white". Great project as always.
Drinker, was she?
Not on Sundays but yup she likes her brandy just a little. LOL
kind of make sense as people are using charcoal toothpast now to whiten teeth...
Scott Basham I've known several people that are 90+ years old that have said burnt toast every morning is one of the secrets to longevity.
I've seen people do less with more
Was really surprised to see the casting take so nicely. Proper engineering sand grains are jagged, while beach sand grains are round.
2:18 sand randomly forms the face of a man with a beard and mustache in the middle of the bowl!
Oh no you don't! I just got rid of the last batch of pilgrims. First Our Lady of Immaculate Kanuckistan and now her son?!
Cannot be unseen.....
This is absolutely genius! Especially for those of us on a budget. Besides, carbon foam sounds a whole lot better than sourdough.
I've always enjoyed your videos and have found them very informative in a fun way and I'm impressed with that. This video is probably the best one I've seen! Keep up the good work!
dang man i learn a ton from your videos, wish i could have had someone like you explaining this in school, probably explains alot with me though :) hope you have a happy holidays
*starts a gofundme page for a new self-healing cutting mat*
A used one would even do.
^ one without a mortal wound, anyway.
amazon says they're cheap

Return the mat to the manufacturer.. Defective!... Obviously not self-healing, is it? LOL.
Your ideas are out there and awesome.
Love and respect, keep up the fight.
I fucking LOVE sketchiness of the whole thing! Long time sub, by the way, love your channel!
What brand of Lucifer's lettuce does he grab from the ol' satanic supermarket?
Lamia's Lucious Organic Leaves®. They've sponsored the subliminal messages for the past few months. Thanks for asking! Wait for the signs.
Shitslapper mk.3000 I was curious what the hell he was making
Shitslapper mk.3000 at 1:06 he says I want a kanov .... or as the captions clarified a "cannot"
Haha toast forge, nice invention!
I live vicariously through you AVE. No need to burn my own garage down, when I can watch you. Keep up ze great Vverk.
Nice choice in song for the begining. One of my favorites.
......when I saw the large puddle of molten aluminum on the bench I said to myself "I guarantee he doesn't panic". How did I know that? Well.....he just had a friggin campfire on a ridiculously cluttered bench and was totally calm. Some molten metal ain't gonna phase him.
The worst thing you can do in any situation ever...is panic.
I'm seriously the same way. It makes it easier to deal with the situation.
I'd never heard the word "embiggens" until I moved to AvE's youtube channel.
Why? It's a perfectly Cromulent word.
Dale Maunder it's from Simpsons.
"The smallest crucible embiggots the scabbiest pour"? I had to watch again to find it. WTF language is that? When I read your comment, I was thinking "Wow! look at embiggens on her!" but now that I have context, I'm utterly comflumbergated. See? I can make up words too!
*DISCLAIMER:* All words are made up.
AvE spoiler alerts man! I've been thinking this was a real language all this time! life is over for me now... excuse me while I go stick my head in carborized bread...
Your videos get better and better. "BREAD". Keep up the AMAZING work!
Your level of preparation for flaming molten metal is just astounding!
"Nobody panic"-This is a guy who has fucked up before in his life. professional
So THAT'S how the cutting mat melted
Damn... it worked! I are impressed good sir! I may have to try that myself... but I'll do mine outdoors on the patio.
I suggested this! Awesome to see that it worked! I have been considering making inserts for the windows in my kitchen out of giant sheets of carbon foam. I had actually considered insulating an entire shed!
Does the mat self-heal from burns?
Does praying still work?
You can try
Much as it ever did.
Aaron Broyles duct tape fixes everything
Only if you're sending thoughts and prayers via fackbook likes
Will Christmas fruit cake work as a sour dough substitute? We may have finally found a good use for them.
First time ive had internet in a while. Well worth my time to watch. Amazing vid lol.
That was pretty cool AvE!
Since you're in the market for a new cutting mat, do you have one to recommend?
Rusty Mundorf he will probaly turn it around
Welp, time to cast a new self-healing mat out of aluminum.
TPfaffle *Aluminimum
Антон Южаков *aluminuminium
Aluminiuminimaluminumminiluminum
Yayy I did a goods
You know Ave, in some of your movies, I find myself glancing around your bench looking for the "Bong" And its always Entertaining.
that is the most genius thing ever , I'm starting to pyrolize every hunk of bread I an find..the mrs. doe not want me to build a hung of gypsum foundry in the garden..but a loaf of bread...thats disguising as some random charcoal..my life has sense now thanks canookistan man. i owe you some skookum stuff
music is tchaikovsky's 1812 overture, NOT william tell
Thank God I am not the only person who noticed!
Since carbon foam an insulator you should make a carbon foam beer cozy!
+Thrakerzod Asathoth hahaha are you peeking in my window?!
Wow.....incredible.
Many thanks for making the video.
AvE, you rock, Dude!
More Uncle BF!
smelting on the bench top zero fox
Edward Allen stovepipe
Love these alternate casting method videos, super interesting.
They just keep getting better 😉😉cool vids Ave
That cutting mat was brand new not that long ago. It sure has earned it's keep for such a short life span. It should be retired and hung on the shop wall as a reminder of all the bumblefuckery that took place on that bench over the last year or two..... or, auction it off on ebay to the highest bidding AvE groupie. That green cutting mat may hold the record for appearing in the most youtube thumbnails. That fucking cutting mat MAY be more famous than AvE himself!!!
Yes, don't send the mat to the "ART" bin. It deserves a place on a wall somewhere.
I'll bid on that matt. Ahhhh, the stories it would tell.
My tuna sammich called you a liar...can't argue with a sammich.
Don't be daft, of course you can argue with a sammich, just look out for the men in white coats.
Your vids are the best, you an this ole tony are my two favorite channels
SME society of manufacturing engineers member for over 30 years, is amazed and impressed, bravo!
yes burnt toast
and that aluminum makes a hellofa grilled cheese.
yah, I don't sleep either
That cutting mat gets so much love.
I am really impressed by that. The manliest man I know.
Is this a good idea? Reminds me of a joke. How do you fit an elephant in a plastic Safeway bag? You take the "s" out of "safe" and the "f" out of "way"
one of my favorite jokes!
Ben Wilson brain hurt but funny!
BurninGems I don't get it
Notification squad reporting in from your neighbor to the west, Alaska!
How's the fire situation there?
AvE nothing like BC! Where I am it's been raining for approximately forever. Hear the situation over there is scary as frig. My better half fights forest fires and they were put on notice to maybe head that way. Keep safe!
williams lake is bad my brother can see smoke from manitoba
Ah coastal eh. Meh, I'm sure a plague of tourists are imminent.
Notification squad reporting from South Dakota, where our only accomplishment is being better than North Dakota.
I've been wondering where that burn came from forever, and I finally figured it out.
That was awesome man!
Never mind that. Did you just make a fidget spinner? Shame!
How to burn down the rest of Bc
+Aaron Blake That's why inside!
Ave,YOU ARE GENILIOUS!!!! Edible insulation.
Do more of these, AvE!
Did you carve the bread out before or after you carbonized it?
before. Less mess.
AvE do you recommend a Forstner bit, or sneaking up on it with a boring bar in the mill? Do feed rates vary on sourdough vs 9 grain loaves?
Just give 'er all she'll suffer.
He strapped his dick in vice, was gunna use a tungsten carglide bit it in the clapped out Bridgeport, seeing as how that right there is the pinnacle of all metals being harder than a coffin nail and all, it ain't no simmtered metal gahhbage, he instead decided to fire up the new drill press mill because auntie Bob decided the chooch factor was at the proper level to hog out some caburized bread, tis nothing she can't handle efter all! Eingaged the safety squints, had the pucker factor cranked to 11 and just gave er hell!!! The new rig had a hot supper on that one!!!
You misspelled "cunsten tunglide". 5/7
I have an old Makita grinder that won't work, what are some things that can be wrong with it?
You ate it?
AvE good one dad
Switch, bad cord, poor contact between brushes & commutator,
Is it 66% glass fibre reinforced? If not, try to raise or lower the amount of glass fibre in the mouldings.
A Hungry Kid In Africa It could be broken.
I'm amazed at just how calm you were when you spilt it on your mat.
That was great! Thanks.
Why doesn't the tin can melt?
The Dark Vortex was wondering the same thing cause I used to use my forge and throw a cast iron skillet on top to melt things then one day I pick the skillet up and the bottom fell out lol
worldtraveler okay, that makes sense. I kinda thought it was but jus wanted to be reassured
It's steel. Only jet fuel can melt steel.
Jay H the constant heating and cooling cycles affect the iron over time. Atleast that's my theory
because it's steel
57 seconds in and 307 views!?
youtub counts 3 seconds of watch time as a view
My compliments, cheap, creative and it works, damn good my man.....
Finally been waitin for dis video forever, came out right after my attempt at carbon foam foundry failed
"What you do not wanna do is put water on that."
Reminded of that time me and a mate were playing with bismuth, melting it over the stove. Made some lovely crystals and all. And then someone decides to re-melt a chunk of bismuth that had come in contact with water. It was dry, or so we both thought. So he tosses it into the crucible along with the rest of the nicely melted stuff.
The resulting explosion was impressively scary. To this day, there is still silver spatter on the ceiling tiles. And on the coat I was wearing. Fortunately it gets picked out of hair fairly easily, and what with the smallish half-kilo or so amount we were melting, and with the random number gods smiling down on us both, nobody came away looking like Freddy Krueger's less pretty grandpa.
Was a sharp reminder not to fuck around with water and melted metals though.
Too cool. Gotta make one of these.
Rest in piece that cutting mat. It was a truly iconic fixture of the channel.
You sir, are a legend! This is by far your best video ever and a load of bread - who would have thought?T I learned something, I laughed all with your playful language :D
I need to get some briquettes... some bread ... for my weber
THANK YOU :D
Wow, that was awesome!
Lets see the rest of youtube now try this. AVE always breaking records!!!
I'm amazed the self healing matt, and the workbench, didn't go up in smoke when you were melting the aluminum..... carbon foam is really neat stuff, thanks for sharing.
Hole E! Watching this in my backyard at whatever time of the morning. Passed out at some point last night, the bonfire is still choochin’
New favorite AvE.
AvE has the absolute best Spannerisms ....
He is also a cheeky bugger who doesn't afraid of nothings mang.
Now, dear internets, please provide AvE with the stuffs he needs for a "Will it Woodchip" series.....
cheers AvE, nothing like the smell of
warm bread at 6:30 in the morning.
Right on top of the cutting mat... amazing.
now that's Canadian ingenuity at its finest. AvE never ceases to amaze me
So Getto! AVE you are one of Kind....
Damn, wish I knew this trick a few years ago. Thanks AvE. I will be using this.
This UA-cam channel is the best.
