    Ave, I Love you man! You have taught me so much over the last year that I couldn't even begin to tell you! I KNOW you DIDN'T break that unit, I've seen you take apart countless units from drills to pnuematics and they always seem to chooch just as well as before! You're a man after my own heart... I loved taking things apart and researching the design techniques used in industry in my earlier years. I'm an Embedded Systems Engineer and I've designed electronic medical devices for a major electronics manufacturer (Blue chip, Fortune 500, etc) in my past life and I just love the critical-yet-fair approach you have to the items lucky enough to cross your desk. Please keep up the good work!
    I've realised I also used some of your catch phrases ( "chooch", "skookum", "shmoo", etc) in everyday life and it's all your fault! Bastard! Thanks :)
    Seriously, much Love for your work and long may it continue!

    Thanks AVE. Entertaining video as usual. I would like to warn you that not all (actually most) one part silicones are not safe to use on electronics because they release acetic acid when they cure and actually corrode the electronics faster than just water would. Those silicones often have "Acetoxy Cure" or similar on the label or TDS. You want to look for the "Neutral Cure" silicones, that use either an Alkoxy (leaves Alcohol), or Oxime (leaves methyl ethyl ketoxime) cure systems. These silicones will often say non-corrosive or sensor safe or some such on their label or TDS. Only one of the three silicones you presented is actually safe to use on electronics. The Dow Corning 732 and Loctite 596 are acetoxy cure systems, whereas the Permatex Ultra Blue (the one you thankfully used) is an oxime cure system.

    Hey AvE, nice vijeo. One small tip, actually putting a capacitance as a load to the motor PWM is not such a good idea. When the transistor turns off the capacitor does mitigate some noise and oscillates with the inductor, or gets charged at a certain value. When turning the transistor on again, you've essentially created a short circuit that requires a very big current spike, that is to charge the capacitor to nominal input voltage. So you're asking a lot from the battery/decoupling caps, the transistor, and the capacitor you put. Just using a schotty diode is better and it has a typical capacitance of 100pF, give or take. Cheers, keep it up!

    • @Hagledesperado
      @Hagledesperado 7 років тому +5

      Yeah, shoulda put a Shitkey diaper in there instead of that puny crapacitor. Would have concievably increased the efficiency by a tenth of a fraction of a percent as well, freewheeling.

    • @AwesomeMcTasty
      @AwesomeMcTasty 7 років тому +7

      Despite lithium batteries being quite skookum, chances are that with its combined internal resistance, all the traces on the board, the resistance of the transistors themselves, the peak current being applied won't be anywhere near enough to stress the transistors any more than switching on the motor, especially considering that they are explicitly designed to handle the current in that direction, while the built-in diode is just a side-effect. Plus, I think he said the capacitor was like 22pF, even less capacitance than the diode.
      All that being said, I'd love to eat my words and have someone do a proper test, if it means we all learn from it.

  • @Acoustic_Theory
    @Acoustic_Theory 7 років тому

    Worth mentioning: The electrical noise in motor commutation is created by the inductance of each individual winding, and mutual inductance between windings. High power motors will actually create visible high-voltage arcing as the commutator (a rotary switch) contacts make-and-break the connections with the windings. The inductance of the coil wants to keep the current flowing, and so when the contact is broken, the coil voltage goes thru the roof, and the air gap between contacts is small, so a visible arc is created, and this activity also mutually couples between the windings that are not connected and the windings that are connected, creating inductive voltage spikes in the active coils. So that capacitor shunts that very brief voltage spike across the motor terminals to provide a low-impedance path that does not pass through the switching MOSFETs.

    Really helpful for the back of the class.
    Anything that has a confuser inside can sort itself out given the right conditions.
    The old "turn it of and turn it on again| works most of the time but sometime a capacitor deep inside fucks ya by keeping it on.
    Un plug the fucka completely, make a cup of tea or coffee and try again.
    Thanks AvE, I learned shit loads which will all be forgotten when I really need it but hey, it was fun while it lasted.
