It's interesting that a common process in the papermaking industry would be written up as a completely novel process by "Tech Science" websites. The concept works, but the process and applications need more details.

    Lemme tell ya about getting NaOH in your eye. It ain’t fun and it requires presence of mind and situational awareness to deal with it.
    As a young lad back on The Rock I used to make hydrogen balloons by mixing household lye, water and tin foil in a coke bottle and putting a balloon over the mouth of the bottle. Well, more is better and a faster reaction must be better. One day as I was amping up the production a balloon popped of a bottle and, you guessed it, the vile mix sprayed into my left eye. In a panic I thought of what to do, pour vinegar in my eye. Painful? Sure. Less than what was going on? Absolutely.
    I sprinted up from the basement to discover that we were out. Either that or, in my panic, I couldn’t find it. My next thought was French dressing which I was a huge fan of and knew where it was. Yup, I irrigated my eye with orange Kraft french dressing. 35yrs later I can still watch mind numbing crap on UA-cam with both eyes.
    True story.
    Great channel.

      You are lucky as hell, man! Lye happens to have the hellish property of being soluable and hygroscopic, so when it gets into your eyes, it will travel to the highest water concentration. That happens to be the inside of your eyes. So if you don't act lightning quick, you're going to have lye irigating your eye sockets.

    My 2 cents' worth: don't mess with the viscosity yet. Instead do multiple vacuum purges: pull a vacuum, little bubbles will then turn big and pop, and also will force their way out of the wood. Releasing the vacuum will make any remaining bubbles small again, and also suck the epoxy into the wood to replace the voids that are vacuumed out. Do this a few times, and then leave it without vacuum to cure.

    • @peepzorz
      @peepzorz 6 років тому +1

      Yeah it seems like the vacuum step pulls air out of the wood and pushes epoxy away, need to devacuum before it cures so it has a chance to flow back into the voids. However, the fact that there were so many embedded bubbles from vacuuming alone makes me think that lowering the viscosity will also help bouyancy bring those to the surface and pop easier also. I think both lower viscosity and multiple vacuum/re-pressurize cycles have a better chance of success.

      In my experience epoxy doesn’t like hard vacuum as it can start to boil. The resin is just to index match the fibres, so I would try a low viscosity polyurethane resin (sold as solid water and for making paths with all the stones stuck together. The refractive index is a bit lower than epoxy, but you can’t have it all! Nice low viscosity one, get one with a loooooong pot life and pump the life out of it... should take as hard a suck as your wee pump can muster. Then cycle the degassing, regarding, degassing etc and hope you can suck the air out that woody stuff.

    As a godforsaken chemistician, look for a separate but usually linked "Supporting Information" (or SI) PDF to get the actual experimental procedure. The journal article discusses results, the SI says what they actually did.

    • @DerDanachDenkende
      @DerDanachDenkende 6 років тому +16

      the experimental procedure is actually described within the article, but as usual, at the end of the article. I guess uncle bumblefuck didn't read all the way to the end :D.
      The SI contains photos of the samples/solutions during and after the procedure (super helpful to check, if everything works out as it should), FESEM pictures and some graphs and photos that proof the transparancy.
      My guess is that the H2O2 treatment and the washing steps weren't as thoroughly as needed, and the polymer infiltration was also a little bit more complicated.

    • @hanchymanchy5680
      @hanchymanchy5680 6 років тому +11

      Well, that's me shown . . . thanks for the correction. I still recommend checking out the SI for any future demos; it never hurts, and sometimes does contain syntheses (useful for the home chef) and characterization data (for the lab guys who have machines to tell them if they did something right).

    The vacuum draws the gases out, then bring back to atmospheric which then pushes the resin back into the pores of the wood. Your wood must be as dry as possible so dry under vacuum before starting.
    Cheers, Mark

    I don't have a clue about what I just wrote, but what the hell, try it.

    • @kmrst10000
      @kmrst10000 6 років тому +1

      What I gather is that they cycled the gas in and out of the vacuum 3-4 times to draw it all the way into the wood.

    • @Misack8
      @Misack8 6 років тому +1

      Exactly that! He just pulled a vacuum and let it cure while under vacuum, however he should have cycled it back and forth before it cures in sequential cycles as soon as it gets to a vacuum.
      BUT, how much vacuum should he pulls? As much as possible?

    • @Jewelrymaker
      @Jewelrymaker 6 років тому

      Exactly! Degas. Pull vacuum, then release will cause bubbles to collapse. Keeping the vacuum on will never release the bubbles.

    • @xeluc7837
      @xeluc7837 6 років тому +1

      Yes this is it. The wood needs to be dried under vacuum or with a desiccant, the viscosity of the resin needs to be lowered, and the vacuum needs to be cycled a few times for best absorption. The digestion seemed to work well, but the oxidation of the lignin seemed incomplete. i'd give both steps more time with fresh application of chemicals, and then try again once the material is completely dry :)

    Hey AvE bro, I'm a materials research chemist and it looked like you were doing a great job up until the epoxy phase. Just a few suggestions for you that may increase your chances of success.
    1. You are right about adding a solvent to your epoxy mixture. Under preferable conditions (you having greater access to chemicals) I would suggest changing the polymer mix to something inherently less viscous (some silicones are great if you are looking for flexibility in the end product)... but adding solvent like acetone or methyl-alcohol (methanol) is your best bet. I would try methyl-alcohol first since you are probably going to have problems with the acetone either inhibiting crosslinking of the polymer mixture, or you will have evaporation problems under vacuum (acetone leaving the polymer mixture in the vapor phase).
    2. You should definitely degas your polymer mixture PARTS separately prior to mixing. This is an extra step and you will obviously still have to vacuum the mixture with the delignified wood, however it will most likely drastically reduce the amount of foaming (bubbling) during that last vacuum step (this is also a consideration for using methyl-alcohol over acetone).
    Anyways, that's my two cents. Very interesting project. I may have to try this in my own lab sometime. Keep your dick in a vice.

    One piece of advice from a Gray Beard (white actually). When you pour a liquid from an “F” Style can (a rectangular can or bottle with an offset spout in the top) hold the can with the spout at the top nearer your holding hand. When the product pours it will not dribble all over the top of the can. and it will not glug.

    Rather than diluting the resin you’ve got with solvent, try the slow cure variant of Entropy Resin’s Super Sap CCR. It’s crystal clear. Viscosity is 195cps when mixed- much lower than even your diluted stuff. Or try Cactus Juice. It’s a heat activated wood stabilizing resin used for penetrating punky wood for turning. Viscosity is 6 (not a typo; as in less than 10) cps however it has a faint amber tint.
    When you degas, you have to let the air back in otherwise the bubbles never collapse and just harden as bubbles in the vacuum. It’s best to do this a couple times.
    You could also try pressure casting although that might squish the wood fibers.

    For the degassing try this:
    1: Mix your epoxy with the acetone, then degas it by itself to get a majority of the air bubbles out of it. Don't go too deep in the vacuum because you will lose your acetone.
    2: Then stick your wood in it and pull a mild vacuum.
    3: Then replace the vacuum with high pressure air.
    Repeat steps 2 and 3 a few times to force as much epoxy in the wood as you can. You wont have to worry about viscosity as much after you do the first degas cycle.
    When you are finished with the degassing, instead of allowing it to cure in a vacuum put it in a pressure tank at about 100PSI or so. I don't know how your wood will turn out, but your epoxy will look like glass.
    Source: I have years of manufacturing experience with casting epoxies.

      This dude seems to know a thing or two about epoxy, listen to him.
      Allowing it to cure under vacuum seems to be where things went wrong, bubbles guaranteed all over the place, epoxy foams up and doesn't go clear unless you collapse the low pressure foam with pressure. If you can put more than atmospheric for curing more power to you, volume of any bubbles is inversely proportional to pressure.

    A couple potential downfalls. First, the paint sticks you are using have the fibers running along the stick and not across. In the papers, they show the fibers running the short direction across the wood. The "straws" may pass light like fiber optic cable along the straw and not necessarily across them. Secondly, it looks like you mixed to g/L instead of Molar. Molar includes the volume of the dissolved solids in the liter.

    I think too much epoxy was the problem, the heat it generates speeds up the hardening process.
    Acetone (as you said) is your best bet for a thinner and it also slows down the hardening process. I use epoxy building fishing rods. After I mix it, I pour it onto a flat aluminum surface to dissipate the heat and also spread the epoxy out which slows down the heating somewhat too. Interesting project 👍

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby 6 років тому +3

      From what I understand it does lose some strength when thinned with acetone. As far as using heat to release the bubbles, yes that does work but it also speeds up the curing process. You can also use vacuum pressure to release the air bubbles but it also speeds up the cure time. I would think in this case you may want to dip the wood into epoxy and then remove the excess epoxy and put it under vacuum to pull it into the pores...but that is just a guess.

    Acetone will start to boil out of the mixture if you any pull more than a tiny vacuum on it. The hotplate stirrer has a magnet on a shaft in it, so it can create a rotating magnetic field, but it only works well if your stirbar is not too far away from the center of the hotplate, also, sometimes you need to soft-start it, otherwise the magnets have a hard time locking into sync at a high-RPM, kinda like a stalled 3-phase induction motor.

    Hey, great attempt! Couple of ideas. First, I think your vacuum chamber could work, just give it multiple suck-and-release cycles. But to do that you're gonna need a really slow-curing, low-viscosity epoxy. Rather than mucking about with acetone, you might want to just go out and buy some on the internet.
    Also, there's a way to test if it's gonna work before you do it! There's a bunch of liquids like corn syrup, and mineral oil that have the same index of refraction as cellulose: if you soak and vacuum the treated wood in one of those, you should see the "clear wood" effect so long as the wood stays wet. Then you can test your chemistry without having to mess around with the resin. I think mineral oil's probably the best choice due to its low viscosity.

    8:27 Nitrile gloves should NEVER be used with concentrated nitric acid! The combination spontaneously combusts: not what you want to deal with while you're removing those gloves as fast as possible. Latex also ignites in presence of 70% nitric acid. For nitric acid, use butyl rubber, neoprene, or no gloves at all (keratin is surprisingly resilient to strong acids)

    • @mauricevandoeselaar
      @mauricevandoeselaar 6 років тому +2

      Well in acids i think it is best to use no gloves. As soon as there is acid on your skin you can wash them off ( except hf) else you are getting acid from your gloves on all your parts table gloves etc. with hydroxide i use gloves.

      The problem with HF isn't that it's physically damaging; it's that the acid is absorbed through your skin and the F- ions can be toxic. And HF burns aren't always painful, so sometimes you won't even know you've been poisoned until it's too late.

Then repeat "about" 3 times. Leaving it under vacuum won't help the wood absorb the polymer as well.

    Recomend degassing before mixing the two components together, this should get the water out before you start.
    Also, when you apply the mix to the wood, if you pull a good vacuum for a minute or so, then release it and repeat a few times, it will help distribute your liquid inside the wood and also get rid of the bubbles better.
