Couldn’t you just put a magnet on the other side and use the magnets to lift it? That way there’d be no hole at the bottom tipping people off to a false bottom.
I think he is talking about glueing a magnet on the false bottom and using the magnet to grab the bottom and you can lift it up. Strong magnets of course
@@dontworryaboutit8127 A thief is not going to experiment with magnets and metal parts.. he will grab whatever is in sight and book it.. if he doesn't notice something is off he will just open the drawer, see nothing of value and look elsewhere..
I agree, the hole was completely unnecessary and makes it cumbersome to open. He could have mounted smaller magnets in each corner (inside the risers or next to them) to keep it in place and then using just 1 strong magnet over the locking hinge to release the lock and lift up the bottom at the same time.

You could use a support piece in the center of the drawer to prevent sagging. Without it if you tap the bottom of the drawer you can easily detect a false bottom

Great job! Years ago I had a bathroom vanity that I made a very nice false bottom for. I had (18) 100oz silver bars hidden.

Nice design. Personally I would put the lock closer to the dowel hole. If anyone inspected the drawer and saw the hole, they could assume it's a false bottom. When trying to open it, with the lock in the center it's obvious that the bottom moves. Putting the lock as close to the dowel hole would make the bottom a lot more stable and the hole might be disregarded as a bad design as the floor might not move when trying to lift it. Just my 2 cents :)
This is actually genius in a way , but then again someone will expect something to be there since it a a bottom drawer and that’s where I would hide my goodies 🤔

If there are Multiple Drawers and you want them to match, you could just remove the Original bottom, replace it with the new piece. So you would use the New piece as the actual bottom and use the Original bottom as the lid. Or you could just replace all the bottoms so they all match.

You should get metal sheets, melt them to a high viscosity, weld it, and cut it to make a sword. I think this will be a great idea. You could also carve "The King of Random" into the blade or handle.

I'd really like to see one of those builds completely un-cut (within reason ofc, skip glue setting, and paint drying, but other than that, tool gathering and such...) I dunno, I just find myself curious to see how exactly how long it takes to record something like this. Gives an appreciation to the amount of work that goes into your videos.

You mean a line gun? A rail gun is borderline impossible
Impossible is a bit extreme; it's difficult and there are some challenges to overcome. I want them to face these challenges first so I know what to look out for when I try building one myself.

What happens when burglars break in, they generally don't open drawers nicely and take a peak. They rip them out and toss the contents on the floor, not sure your design would hold up to that.
You've watched too many movies. Most burglars take about twenty minutes per job, and most won't even take out everything that's in a drawer, just feel around for solid objects. This won't keep out someone who can take their time and knows all of these tricks (professional thief and police come to mind).
i was more thinking of junkies and those that didn't even make it to junior high. I think professional thieves will be looking for high value items, which most people keep in safes or the fridge/freezer, but your input is valued. take it easy.

Personally, adding a support piece somewhere towards the middle may reduce possible sag that may be shown on the sheet wood when items are on top of it.

if you were planning on doing this when you bought a new dresser, would you suggest using the thin board to replace the bottom and use the the original drawer bottom to create the fake so that the look matched?

You should make it so that it has hinges on the far side so that the false bottom doesn’t come all the way out
Then the gap would have to be bigger and you'd be more likely to see it.

Maybe you could try fixing washers to the underside of the false bottom. Magnets could then be used to lift out the false bottom.

It would be a bit harder to pull off but if you could find a way to put the base of the drawer even lower it would hide a bit of the visual wonkiness that false bottoms have. Also if you put those magnet latches at each corner it would be far more secure.

You should freeze your homemade rocket fuel with liquid nitrogen and see if it still lights.
Instead of poking a hole in the bottom, you could also use springs that are compressed when the magnetic lock is latched, but pop the panel up when unlatched.

If you put a piece of metal a bit behind where the hinge is you can just use the magnet as a key/handle to lift it off but other than that great idea and execution, thumbs up :)
Depending on what you have in the drawer, it might not hurt to put a center support in the bottom to keep it from sagging.

If you want to make the drawer bottoms match, just get some shelf liner from the hardware store and cover the drawer bottoms. Done.
Great idea, I plan to buy a flameproof document bag to keep stuff in, for added protection from fire.
