Amazing watch. When you compare a jewel like this to a Nautilus and see that they are nearly equal in price you begin to realize the absurdity that has overtaken the high end watch market. Price has no longer anything to do with exquisite complications or watchmaking artistry. Thank you for allowing us to enjoy this fantastic piece. Please do some more of these.
The price is no longer defined by craftsmanship since watches are no longer tools but pieces of jewelry. This is also the same reason why a Rolex is a better watch than a Grand Seiko, an AP a better watch than a A.Lange. They just have more brand equity in the luxury segment, provide more status and thus are way more desirable, even if the latter are objectively better made.
0:33 You really can pass as a Kingsman, my guy. That watch and the whole ensemble is CLEAN. Great job on the cinematography ... and the review, as well.
Many thanks for this wonderful view of this high horology piece Teddy with superb photography. Not only does it look incredible but it's functional as well. The view of the movement in action is just sublime. I know I'll probably never see one let alone own this piece but that engineering and design is just something else. Thanks again.
Haute Horology at it's finest. Look at the details... the finishing on the case and movement, the hands, the sharp cuts on the markers, the way they frame the day and date, the text.... just perfection
I'm a watch guy and just recently discovered your channel and site. I'm hooked, love your videos, I'm sure I'll be purchasing something from your site soon. Best channel for watches out there, thanks for the content. Cheers from Boston
Stunning piece that sets the bar for all watchmakers. Also, thank you, Teddy, for the recent Longines video. Their lineup commands more consideration. Your work is exemplary.
Great video. What a great watch. This is what Patek is all about. I had the chance to wear a 5370P, their best movement in my opinion. If you're ever in Geneva, let me know
I love watching in depth reviews of high end horological pieces. Would live to see the Moser fly back with the Aginore movement. Data graph perpetual. Would be nice as well.
Magnificent video. Excellent commentary, beautifully shot, and absolutely the right conclusion. Well done. PS. It boggles the mind that a blunt instrument 5980/1r costs more than this 5970, but that tells you a lot about what people value today - showing off!
I salute your transition, this is made me laugh a ridiculous amount. I’m so glad you got your hands on a Patek, And that all the cement what your doing bother. Keep me guessing lol
I've had a gold 5270 on my wrist once, and it was an undescribable experience. All those little pieces that we are able to see in so much detail in these typical macro shots, are in reality much smaller than what I expected, while at the same time looking so polished. I was also impressed by the heftyness of it! Although it's a delicate watch for sure, it's still made to be wearerd, not to stay protected in a glass case. I hope whoever is the now owner of that watch (I tried at an AD) I hope that person wears it in good health!
Love this overview. In addition, this obviously isn’t an every day watch and because of the price point, no one reviewing it will be able to let it sit for a few weeks, then re-set the watch. I’m told that when buying this watch (or the new 5270) you actually have to meet with a Patek specialist and get trained on how to use the functions properly. My question is: If you let this watch sit for say a month, how long would it take to set the date, day, month, etc? Love the idea of a perpetual calendar. In addition, I know it’s a labor intensive timepiece for the watchmaker as well as the wearer…
People were paying over 1 million USD for a Rolex Rainbow and some of these grand complications were going for the same price. Mind boggling how some people think! Rolex is now just a flex whereas Patek is for a watch connoisseur with style!
It is truly a beautiful example of mechanical art. But after seeing a lange datagraph next to one, lange hit it out of the park. Same inspiration, but a much more refined layout.
Great video as always, Teddy! Would it be possible to get a collection update? Unless I’m missing something it’s been a few years since you’ve done one!
Beautiful as this watch is, I always feel that a perpetual calendar should have an automatic movement so you can wear it every day without having to wind it or put it into a watch winder.
Love the video's Teddy. Great job. @ 6:16 The minute hand is badly scratched, and the bluing on the second hand is poorly done. I'd humbly expect excellence for over 150 K... Grand Seiko produces "unblemished dials and hands" for $6000. I love Patek, but this is unacceptable quality control for "The best of the best".
@@denlogv Do you think so? Hmmm... @Teddy Baldassarre ~ "Are those scratches on the minute hand (near the center of the dial) or just light reflecting @3:23 and @6:16 ? "
Beautiful watch and beautiful shots! Production value is crazy high as always. Hard to make a patek perpetual look bad in my opinion but this brings out the very best.
You’re a very lucky man, Ash. Question: Should you ever get hold of an Explorer, is protocol to then call round all other establishments that have you down for one informing them to remove your details?
What an absolute piece of art from Patek, absolutely stunning. It be would definitely be highly interesting to see more of high-horology pieces, but personally I would love to see a review like this one about a weakness of mine: a Blancpain Villeret full calendar, those with Caliber 6654 in particular.
My ultimate grail would be a 5270G, but yes, the 5970R is indeed what I also think of when I think of Patek. Gorgeous pieces, works of art that are alive.
Loving the content on high end “aspirational” pieces, please keep it going. I’d love more reviews on Patek perpetual calendars or even minute repeaters, if you manage to get your hands on one. Thanks, Teddy!
Hey teddy! Great video I'm actually looking to buy my first automatic watch and am having a hard time deciding between the Seiko dark manta ray samurai and the spb121. I know that one is a diver watch and the other a field watch, but these are the two watches that I really liked, so I would really love your opinion on them! I'm really looking to buy a Seiko as my first automatic.
I think it comes down to your lifestyle. Both are great first watches. Generally I think a field watch offers a bit more versatility especially with the water resistance here. One thing I might just think about is the color of the watches here. They are vibrant and for your first watch I would suggest something that is going to offer optimal versatility. Both are a little more questionable there, but otherwise, you can’t go wrong.
I would go for the spb121 because it is as rugged and more versatile... but honestly, I would go for a Hamilton as they have better accuracy and better quality control... anyway, good luck picking a watch
@@TeddyBaldassarre thanks! I am looking for something that pops a little though, as this is probably the only watch that I am going to buy and wear for the next maybe 5-6 years. Again, great video, and thanks for posting regular content!!
Great watch indeed, used to own one in WG, but to be honest I prefer the current version with its more sophisticated and beautiful " In House" movement, more complicated and readable dial...
Great review, Teddy. Now, how did it feel to walk around with this one on your wrist? I have to say, THIS is what Patek does! I don't know why people spend any time talking about the Nautilus when they do stuff like this. This watch is and the style is like the Inline 6 engine is to BMW - it's what they do.
I usually prefer Lange's designs over Patek's, but when it comes to chronographs Lange is so overwhelmingly pretty it's almost too much. Patek chronographs are a perfection--handsome, masculine, elegant. I hope I get to own one before I hit 50.
Except for the fact that Jaeger LeCoultre makes almost the same watch for 1/6th of the price in gold and 1/10th the price in steel. Would love to see a comparison between the 5970r and the JLC Master Control Chronograph.

@@Schleberger u should have seen more popular rather then better .Ofc I do agree with u
@@cornmill6516 No, I actually meant better, since they do a better job at being jewelry/a status symbol.
They’re not “better” as better is subjective. Better at bringing status? Maybe, but status is also objective.
