My recommendation would be to use cardboard or newspaper instead of that plastic weed barrier. Eventually weeds grow through it and it can be a mess trying to pull weeds out. With newspaper, u can pull mulch back and add more layers of paper underneath and the worms seem to love it. Biodegradable. Otherwise, beautiful. Love the blue color of home also.
A quick word on landscape fabric: I typically don't use landscape fabric, but in this case, the homeowners requested it. I do, however, use it in very limited areas in my own garden where I don't plan on having anything naturalize (like in areas where I plant new hedges), to keep noxious weeds, like bindweed, out. It's extremely effective in that situation. When I do use it, I only use DeWitt Pro5 Landscape fabric because of its ability to effectively wick water down and because of how strong the weave is. If weeds do form in the mulch on top of the fabric, it's usually in very small quantities and they are extremely easy to pull- MUCH easier than if they were rooted into soil. In the end- to each their own. 😊 The most important thing is that everyone enjoy their gardens and feel inspired and motivated to keep planting! 💚 ~Laura
Garden Answer Highlights yeah the landscape fabric was new, but I’ve found in new areas it’s needed! I made a new flowerbed where there was previously weeds and now they’ve overrun it, landscape fabric would probably have helped in that situation
Well Stated Laura, I Agree With You ! In The Past, I've Not Placed Landscape Fabric Where I Could Have, And Of Course, Regretted It Very Much. The Lesson Learned . . . . . " Work Smarter, Not Harder " ~ Enjoy The Splendor Of Summer !
Glad you mentioned this! I dont use it either BUT I have an area where poison ivy pops up. It makes it scary to work in that area of the garden. This might help me kill it for good. 🤔
Great job. What I got out of this video was when you cut the x in the fabric and then folded it under I was like omg am I crazy how comes I never did that instead of finding rocks to hold the flaps down 🤪
Great video! Gave me some ideas. The distance from your front steps to the corner of your house is about the same as mine. So nice to see someone that has a normal house and not a mansion planting $10,000 palm trees. Thanks.
Yes my husband just told me the same thing that I need to use news paper. I'm thrilled my house is this very color n I was trying to decide wat colors to use. Thanks so much 4 the tip
Yes, this is a great video and I love how you outlined the plants. Beautiful. I would appreciate a video on the irrigation system with how to install it. Well done and thanks again for this video.
I enjoyed watching the process and learned Many years ago when I laid the black sheets , I did not know the thing to lock them which I saw on your video. I will use them when I do my garden next summer. The finished is very nice. 😇
When I first started watching this, I thought oh well, it'll be a low level homeowner's one like mine will be. Then you went full bore and did it professionally. You must be in the business. You knew exactly what to do, what to plant, and how to make it look good. How do you know which plants will look good with which, how to mix them, how many to put together without them looking like a stale repeating pattern, etc.?
You are a God sent. I happened to stumble upon your video and this is exactly what I needed. Thank you so much for the step by step guide from start to finish. Specifically bought this fabric on your recommendation for a small area where it is more decorative with river rock as a feature. Thanks for the referral.
The river rock sounds beautiful. I live on the coast of Maine and love any rocks in my gardens, but found these fabric cloths to be horrific to deal with once weeds get in and attached. You sound like you have a small space to work with, so keep up with the weeds, because once they take hold, there is no way to rip the root system from them, so the weeds (spreading through root types) are hard to remove. It was great for a few years, but I gave up, too hard to use a tool like a small rototiller or one of those fork like tools to loosen the soil each time. Happy gardening, I would love to see your river rock project.
Lovely. It would be interesting to see the progression of the beds throughout this growing season. Take a photo weekly or biweekly, then make a video .

Great video, I would have liked to see the mulch process as well. I was also wondering if you can tell me what hose your using in the irrigation system?
Putting in our first bed against our house. Does it contribute to water getting into foundation cracks in the basement? Oor not enough water to worry about?
Could you do this without weed control fabric and just have mud around or is that not a good idea I have did weed control fabric and crab grass grew right through it
Wow! Please tell me what it is like to put your shovel into the ground like a knife through butter. Makes it look so easy. Meanwhile the ground in AR can't even be augered without busting three shir bolts.

So nice you guys work together. My neighbor at our new house finds it strange I lift mulch and do a lot of the “man” work but I see you do the same. I love gardening and love your channel!
Women are strong, it's funny my girlfriend can lift bags of mulch and potting mix. Push 100L of soil in a wheel borrow. But when she comes home with the groceries! I have to go get the 3 little bags because they too heavy
I have a question because it is an issue we have. I notice that you don’t have gutters in certain areas above your garden. Will that rainfall not make a mess with that mulch? There’s a section of our home where we can’t put a gutter because we have no where to direct the water since homes around here are so close together. But I want a garden so I’m trying to figure out what I can do.
I am interested in why you put weed mat down ? I just did my sons garden and we opted not to do weed mat as it is so bad for soli health and the soil under the old weed mat was "dead". I just hope he does not get a whole heap of weeds he cannot keep on top of. We did mulch it.
I love the garden! Is it necessary to put down the weed suppression cloth? That's pretty... not great for the environment or the soil underneath. I know weedy plants can be a real pain to manage, but I just feel like the weed suppression cloth isn't ideal for more natural / organic gardening. Happy to be set straight on this!
Please, make an update on this projekt. I would like to know if the landscape fabric works so far or if they had to pull out weeds. And if the fabric affected the plants. Because my grandma has a flower bed beside the garage and it has awful weeds in it. I spent 1, 5 hours with diging it out. I don't want to do that each year again and again. And I really want to try out a landscape fabric now. I hope it works even with some weed seeds under the fabric. But there are 2 old Roses in it and I hope they will get enough water, because it's non existent to install drip irigation systems here. The water costs are too expensive to do that as a private person. And fountains/wells has usually nobody. You must always pay for water.

I wouldn't recommend newspaper
I agree Deron…I don’t recommend newspaper at all. I’ve had much greater success with the woven/plastic weed barrier.
