This is based on a series of games called the Touhou Project. It’s mostly created by one guy, ZUN, and has a massive fan base. In fact, I’d say it’s the largest indie game fandom in all of Japan. Thanks to ZUN’s extremely open stance on copyright and derivative works, people are allowed to create their own fan derivative works and even make money off of them. A lot of the time in Japan, fans group together to make things as a team of creators. These groups are referred to as Doujin Circles. There are hundreds of doujin circles that make fan content all dedicated to Touhou Project, the most prominent content out there are the remixes and rearrangements of the many amazing soundtracks to the Touhou games. This is a vocal remix of the track “Maid and the Pocket Watch of Blood” done by the doujin circle LizTriangle. What is the story context? The track is one of the themes of the character Sakuya Izayoi. A powerful maid who wields knives and stops time. Many of Sakuya’s Spell Cards (special attacks) involve a motif of Jack the Ripper in name. So this animation took that idea and crafted an interesting concept where Sakuya battles a Jack the Ripper like character but it turns out to be herself in the end.
